This story ranks among the most glorious of 21st century literary works. This is a piece of fiction on par with Kafka and Vonnegut.

The usage of Koopa's as scientists taps into the modern, and very real fear of being observed and treated like lesser beings in the pursuit of anthropology. The choice of using Koopas is not an unconscious one: Their turtle-like appearance representing the unchanging viewpoints of the ruling patriarchy that consumes modern academia in the Western world. Yoshi's wish to leave his home shows his frustration at how his culture is being fetishized as ‘exotic’ and ‘foreign.’ By leaving, he wishes to integrate himself into Western society, believing it to be a paradise.

His descent into the drug addled Dream World is not only a clever homage to SMB2, but Jungian and very reminiscent of Lewis Carroll in its execution. Its portrayal of graphic interspecies reptilian intercourse is shockingly post-modern and as surreal as the world that it is consumed in. The use of what the author lovingly describes as ‘cloacalingus’ with the egg shows a cycle of unbirth and undeath. The egg represents the social and physical isolation that many people go through on a daily basis. . Birdo represents his subconscious, wanting to consume and share his life essence, in this case the egg. The fact that Birdo is tagged by the scientists shows how they pervade every aspect of Yoshi’s life. The number being the ubiquitous 4, which in many cultures represents death, leave little to the imagination on where this control is taking him.

His return is Yoshi coming to accept his culture, with the magic carpet being his own ‘twist,’ what Yoshi himself brings to his cultural landscape. However, this is a bittersweet ending, with the Koopa’s eyeing the carpet and pondering its existence. An obvious threat to their power.

    10/10 – Would read again.

I don't know if that is the effect you were going for, but I found this pretty amusing!
