I'll have to be in the same boat as Maiafay.

Although you've given a lot of thought about your presentation of Harry's decision in the fic, I would have to say that, in canon time, during his consideration of strangling baby!Cheryl, I'd consider it more of a debate in his thoughts. There's a difference between what a person considers doing -- and what a person really does.

I might accept that Harry would have darker thoughts if there was only Alessa and not a baby here -- but I don't think I can quite accept that he would take to action.

I would have to put it this way: there's a difference between Harry Mason and James Sunderland. They both have dark thoughts no doubt, but one follows through with his action and the other chooses not to.

By all means, your story is well written and I understand your decision in the story, but all I can say is that I just don't agree with it, is all. (And I'm bad about keeping my mouth shut, so I figured I'd flick up my two cents here.)

It is a shame no one else is reviewing this fantastic story. You really know how to write, a little on the wordy side but you are a still a fantastic writer. It is all a matter of taste with the rest of us reviewers I suppose, on how we choose our stories and pairings.

    Thanks for the review, Maiafay!

I think with this fic, it's just that it's a one-shot and there's no actual smut in it. I wasn't even sure about posting it here, but it was the first SH story I completed and I thought the subject matter was appropriately dark.

I can understand why Harry's actions may seem out of character. In retrospect, I think the story is incomplete without the companion piece I planned to write from his point of view. Harry isn't completely evil. But he's not completely good either. He's human and like all human beings, some are more vulnerable to their dark sides than others. In Harry's case, it completely overwhelmed him.

This story partly stemmed from the entry in Harry's journal in SH3 where he mentions how he considered strangling baby Heather to death. I also sensed an indifference from him towards Alessa. He loved Cheryl, but not so much her true self. And so I came up with this scenario. I feel the reason Harry didn't murder Heather in the canon is because she was just a little girl. A baby no less, and no matter how much he resented her at first, he couldn't do it. He couldn't murder an innocent child. So he stuck by her and decided to raise her. First he may have tolerated her, then tried to make her into a replacement for Cheryl, until he finally grew to love her. Not as much as he had Cheryl, but enough to consider her his daughter.

But in this case, Harry wasn't faced with a little girl. Instead he was confronted by the very person he held responsible for losing Cheryl. He didn't see an innocent girl who'd been abused and tormented beyond belief, he saw the "demon" he'd spent so much time chasing around Silent Hill. And since Dahlia was just an old woman who was now dead, he chose to shift the blame for Cheryl's 'loss' onto the person whom he saw as largely responsible for this mess: Alessa.

It didn't matter that Alessa had no power anymore. It didn't matter that she desperately needed someone to love her and he was the only person around who could do that. And it didn't matter how hard she tried to show that she could be as good as Cheryl; that she WAS Cheryl. All he saw was Cheryl's murderer. Because Alessa was still Alessa and not a 'defenseless child', the sympathy or compassion he developed for baby Heather in the canon never emerged. Instead he became consumed by bitterness and rage, and unfortunately for Alessa, she became the sole focus of that terrible anger. Why lower himself to raping her? Because he saw it as fitting punishment. It was the most degrading thing he could do to her, and from his point of view, she "owed" him for taking her in after "murdering" Cheryl.

This wasn't a sudden decision on Harry's part. It was a long drawn-out process that began the day after he returned from Silent Hill with Alessa in tow. But...in the end, he would see the consequences of his actions. It would be covered in the companion piece when he arrived to find Alessa dying in her room, and realized finally what a horrible mistake he had done. It was then that he would finally realize that Cheryl and Alessa WERE in fact the same, and that by doing this, he had done nothing less than torment and rape his little girl, and driven her to suicide.

I still plan to write that companion piece to this story. But it'll have to wait until later. I'm too busy right now with Dark Descent and my other stories. Still, I assure you I haven't forgotten about it.

Once again, thanks for the review! :)

I figured I would re-review and sound a little less harsh. While I still don't think Harry would have done those things--I recognize this is AU however, so my personal preferences should not detract from the story itself. It was a raw, heartfelt letter...nicely written (no pun intended)and seemed very real. I'm not sure why no one is reviewing...this deserves more. Over all I was left with a sad feeling when I finished...kinda bittersweet. It provoked a thoughtful reaction in me, and that is always a sign of a good fic. Nice job.
