On the whole, well-written story. Although, in my opinion, it lacks a bit Miranda's POV. Still, thanks for the good story!

I feel the need to point out that the Shadow Broker's ship is NOT space capable, as mentioned by Liara in ME3, and the war asset description when you scan it. Therefore, it would be impossible for the Broker to leave Hagalaz, and avoid the Normandy when it gets back.

I have to admit I had expectations when I started reading this fic, but after finishing I was very surprised. Your depth of explanation of the slow mental break of of Shepard was done flawlessly. The proper development of Stockholm syndrome was brilliant. I'll admit, when i started reading it was along the lines of " He he erotic Mass Effect fic, should be fun." But what I read was a well developed story that left me reading it all in one sitting. The Two choices for an ending was awesome. I can't tell which I enjoyed more. You have impressive skill in this art.

    Spoilers follow.

This story should have more reviews, not merely because of the obvious effort the author put into it, but because it is very good on several levels. I have seen this prompt a few times on the ME kink meme and it is good to see it done right, versus "Shepard and Liara are captured by the Shadow Broker, who forces them to make out, which they always wanted to do anyway, then they steal a gun and escape, huzzah!" I went into this story looking for something very dark, and was not disappointed. I was also glad it followed through to an unhappy ending. Unlike the endings of ME3, an unhappy ending works here because it fits the story that leads up to it.

Have always been curious about how Shepard would hold up under torture or other ugly conditions, a subject the games do not confront for anyone except offscreen. It is also hard to believe she can walk into the center of both the Shadow Broker's and Illusive Man's spiderwebs and not encounter so much as a trap door, let alone knockout gas or other traps. Here, when the Broker explains to her the situation she is in, I can actually see her believing him and consequently doing what he tells her to.

A good horror story like this is not just about cardboard victims, but shows us how real people respond, in good ways and bad, to the unthinkably awful. Each character's willingness to sacrifice herself for others is how the Broker controls her, but it also raises her above a mere victim. The conflicts between the characters are believable and add to the story. Miranda's breakdown when she learns Liara has been off reading poetry, and her accusation that Liara got them all into this mess, and Liara's fear that Shepard's acting is becoming something more than acting. Better still that her fear finally turns out to be correct.

The sex in this story does not rely on physical force but a scenario that constantly forces the characters to make choices between "awful" and "worse". The characters do not suddenly find themselves enjoying it after five minutes and having loud mutual orgasms with their assailants, as happens all too often in noncon stories. Instead, they try to push back in every way they can, such as Liara inviting one of their guards to assault her just to get him in trouble, though every such attempt exacts a terrible price - like the varren.

Also liked that even the good guy (Solvitis) turns out to be a bad guy. I often found myself wanting to believe him too - his subplot keeps the reader in mind of the bleak future awaiting the characters if he does not come through. The multiple layers of the various deceptions helped me to feel as if I were really there in the story, sharing the horror and hopelessness of it. The story also has many painfully memorable moments, such as Liara kissing Shepard after she returns from the Broker's bedroom, discovering that she's clean outside but still defiled inside, and having Shepard innocently force her to continue the kiss. The tension is heightened by the sense that every good intention ends cruelly, without it all seeming over the top.

    Miscellaneous things I liked:

The mention of the finding of the Martian archives, implying that the universe (or at least the Broker) will go on even without Shepard there to save it.
Miranda. Could not have picked a better character to round out the trio.
The story does not flinch in showing any of the various fetishes, but does not get too hung up on the details of any of them either - which was fine because some are more to my taste than others, and I was glad you stayed clear of things like scat or mutilation. Since you mentioned it, having Shepard suffer the final humiliation of being impregnated would have been hot, though maybe that is its own story.

A few things I would have changed:

More setup. I was looking forward to the meat of the story (so to speak) like everyone else, but I thought the Normandy was sent away too easily to be convincing.

While the story is about Liara, I would have gone more into the thoughts of the other characters to see how they were dealing with all of this inside. Maybe that is just my bias, as I like Shepard and Miranda more.

I would have left out the sex drug. As I mentioned earlier, one of this story's many strengths is that the characters are mentally manipulated rather than physically forced. I would have had them slowly succumb to Stockholm syndrome (as partly happens between Liara and Delaana), or simply the realization, as months and years passed, that they could never escape. Their captors could have sped that process up by mixing the occasional kindness in with the cruelty, or rewarding them with better treatment in exchange for favors, maybe turning them against each other in the process. Of course, with characters as strong and as strongly bonded as these, that would be a tough sell.

In summary, a fantastic job Mr. Owl.

Come on now, if you're gonna end the Pet ending like that, at least have Daleen get shot in the mouth.

Man I just want these girls to be rescued. They've been through a lot of shit. I might invoke the right of Batman and send him in to get them out.

God dam man... Never knew I needed this story in my life until I just finished this. If the hunch I've got is right, the SB is building that facility so he he can out last the Reapers and have Liara, Shepard and Miranda as sex pets... hope I'm guessing right. Oh the anticipation of what is to come is killing me.
