This was all Mike’s fault, Jordan decided as he tripped over what felt like the hundredth tree root. His ankles and toes were killing him. All he wanted to do was turn around and go home.
Oh but he couldn’t do that….
“Come on, Jordan. Prove you’re a man.,” Mike had said, grinning as the group around them chuckled. Truth or Dare was for mi sch school dorks, but somehow Jordan had gotten suckered in to a game. The truths had been amateur, along the lines of who do you like, and who do you most want to sleep with. The dares hadn’t been any better.
Until Mike had come up with a whopper.
“I dare you to sneak in to Greenleaf.” There had been gasped, nervous giggles, no one quite believing that Mike had just suggested what he did. No one from town went to Greenleaf Retreat. It was supposed to be some fancy smancy retreat for the super rich.
No locals allowed. Jordan doubted that even his dad had seen the place, and he was the freaking Sheriff of Westbrook.
“Mike…” he had started, ready to laugh it all off. There was no way. He had been told since the time he could walk that that place was off limits. Okay, more like since the time he could ride his bike without training wheels. The point was, that was a huge no no when it came to places to go. Everyone knew that.
“Come on, Jordan. Don’t be a wuss.” That had stung coming from his best friend. After all, wasn’t he the one who always pulled the stunts Mike was too afraid to? Hadn’t he been the one to pull the pranks that everyone else balked at? Had he not been the one to pull of the senior prank never to be forgotten?
“I’m already in deep shit, and you know it,” Jordan had argued. “My dad catches me pulling something stupid, and they won’t find my body.”
“Oh come on,” Brad had shouted. Someone else made a rude noise, while others began with the chicken noises.
“Daddy doesn’t have to know.” Was Mike really that much of an idiot? His dad knew everything he did. He just chose to look the other way when it came to most of the stuff. “Boys being boys,” or some such shit. He wouldn’t look the other way for this.
“You just sneak in, grab some rich girl’s panties, and get out. No problem.”
“Right.” No problem. So why did he get such a sinking feeling in his gut…
“What the Hell was I thinking?” Jordan muttered to himself. He was leaning against a tree, trying to talk himself in to going further. It wasn’t going very well. For the past few minutes he had been hearing noises. Bad noises. Very creepy noises that brought to mind horror movies and gory video games. He couldn’t quite convince himself that moaning sound he heard was the wind blowing through the trees.
A branch snapped somewhere off to the left. Jordan stood up straight. He looked around, but it was just too dark to see more than vague outlines of trees. Another moan and it was way too close for comfort.
“Screw this.” He took off running, back in the direction of the car. He didn’t care what they said. He was not stepping foot in to these woods ever again.
* * * * *
“Looks like someone could use some roadside assistance,” Jyou muttered. Takara jerked awake, focusing out the window of the Ford Explorer. Yes, up ahead was a car park alongside the road, hazard lights on.
“We can’t stop, we’ll be late,” Yoshi said.
“We’re already late.” Jyou and Yoshi exchanged looks. Takara didn’t bother to acknowledge Ryo’s words. Yes, they were late. Yes, they were going to get caught. She had known this from the beginning, and still gone along with their plan…
“It’s tradition,” had been Jyou’s argument for sneaking out of the compound. It was tradition for the older kids to sneak out. To test their skills by going in to town and having a good time. At least, that was what they had always been told.
Takara had listened to Yoshi try and talk Jyou out of it. She really didn’t understand why Yoshi was still at the school. He didn’t have the right mentally for it. Too nervous, too insecure, even after all the training he had. He should have just stuck with his computers.
“We’re going,” was all Ryo had said, and everyone had agreed. Well not everyone, but Takara hadn’t disagreed...
“We have to stop and help them. Otherwise they might wander in to the woods,” Takara announced. She adjusted the slenderfe ife in its holder on her forearm. She hated not having more, but it wasn’t like she could walk around Westbrooke fully armed.
“Takara…” Ryo started. Jyou had already pulled the vehicle over. Takara got out, not waiting to see what he said.
“Hello?” she called. There were some rustling noises, a quiet moan, but no answer. She walked closer to the vehicle, not seeing anyone inside.
“Do you need some help?” Still no one answered. She approached vehivehicle slowly. She wasn’t afraid of this being a trick. She was trained to handle dangerous situations.
“Hello?” She rounded the corner, stopping dead. She hadn’t been trained to handle situations like this.
