Chapter One: An Angel From Above
------------------------------------------------------------
The sun was battering down hard from the cloudless sky, rendering the wastes an even more inhospitable land. A road could be seen in the distance, joining the Tower of Monos and Futile, a small town, the only one in the barren land, through which a river flowed. Thanks to the wide water supply, the inhabitants can trade and irrigate the land, thus they can cultivate some food in this godforsaken place. Nobody could be seen on that thirty-mile long road, ever.
Yet a group, perhaps of merchants or adventurers, was heading toward the tower. There were three of them: a grass green-cloaked and -robed elf bearing a staff, a broad-shouldered, heavily-armored man with a giant axe on his shoulders, and a sand yellow-robed human male carrying two swords on his back at waist height. They were halfway to the tower, seemingly fatigued. The elf, who hadn’t as much resistance as the other two, fell exhausted to the ground. The broad-shouldered man gave a hand to the party member: “If you can’t take it, as it’s natural, considering your race traits, then I will carry you on my back, okay?”
The staff-wielding person eyed his comrade and replied in a feminine voice, which all elves have, “Okay.” In resigned tone, he continued, “It seems I’m not much use. It would have been better if I had stayed in Futile…”
“Don’t even think about it, Ai,” the Ranger interrupted strongly, “we both know that you are inestimable when it comes to your powers; we can’t do anything without you.”
“Dim is right, we wouldn’t even be able to come here if it wasn’t for you. And you’ll be an even greater help deflecting the Wizard’s spells, so you must go along,” said the Warrior in a rather delicate voice. The words also reflected his thoughts like a mirror, as Ai knew the feeling Graim had, and so decided to go forward.
They were only three miles from the tower, when the sky was almost black, only few rays of sunlight were still lighting the horizon. There they decided to camp for the night. Ai conjured a tent and they settled in.
The dark night seemed as if it would never end. Strange sounds, caused maybe by the wind, could be heard from outside. They ignored it until the sound came closer and became moans. Suddenly the tent lit, forcing the party to run outside, unequipped.
“We are in trouble,” said Dim, holding a knife in each hand, with which he always slept. Estimating the enemy’s strength, his words were proved correct.
//Yes, Graim could still use his mighty fists, but he will certainly try to defend Ai, not even thinking about attacking, as this will endanger his lover. But Ai can’t even cast without the damn spellbook and considering my knives won’t last long, the best idea is to attack the Necromancer…//
They were surrounded by dozens of Zombies and Skeletons, with Monus at the lead. The dark-robed wizard pointed a finger toward Ai and began to chant. Graim covered the body of his companion, trying to protect the elven wizard from the spell, but…
A black ray shot from the Necromancer’s pointing finger and struck the broad-shouldered fighter, piercing him along with the elf. They both fell to the ground, holding hands. Graim, still conscious, looked at the body of the elven girl and caressed her hair.
“For Eternity!” he shouted and stood up, with eyes full of hate and anger. Right when he was about to charge, a cold feeling pervaded his heart. The great warrior looked at his chest and saw a hand that cut through him. He couldn’t believe he would die by the hand of his loved one, but still…
//That’s just destiny,// he thought, and let himself die, for he will see his darling in the afterlife, //and we will be together forever and ever…//
Dim couldn’t stand so much, so he just let his anger lead him.
The ranger cut through the unliving corpses, aiming only toward the main enemy. From heavy rains of blood to violent thrusts, he did not stop until he had to. He was standing still, motionless and helpless. There just wasn’t a way he could negate the evil opponent’s spell.
˝And a light came from above, and there were feathers, scattered in the air, slowly falling to the ground. It was then that the desperate soul regained hope, as he then knew that an Angel had come to rescue him.˝
Dim remembered an old lyric in the Tome of Eternity, reckoning an Angel.
A being with immense beauty and strength came. He had long silver hair, bird wings on his back, and he wielded two bastard swords. The background brought back the image of a picture in which The Angel of Destruction punished the infidels, although he punished the undead instead of the nonbelievers. At last, only ash remained of what was once an army of undead, and the corpse of the necromancer was chained on a giant cross, pierced with swords forming a cross on his chest.
Then the beautiful being eyed the ranger. “Sorry for being late. I couldn’t save them,” he said, looking at the bodies of Dim’s fellows. He then buried the two lovers and hallowed the tower. It took him three days, but in the end, the building became a temple to Eternity, the god of light and love.
After those days, Dim hesitantly asked him a question. “Um, sir, could I ask you a question? Hmm, would you be so kind as to tell me your name?” He was too nervous; he felt as if he had something in his mouth, preventing him from speaking. He didn’t know what was going on with him. Usually he didn’t have problems with small talk and conversations, but then, something seemed to change. He began to feel some kind of attraction to him. //But he is a man, I couldn’t be, he couldn’t…//
“I’m named Settum. And don’t worry, I love you too…” replied the angel and looked toward him. And with a smile he glanced to move on…
