Chapter 1
"The mage has missed the meet." The words dropped like a stone in the quiet darkness of the desert evening. Most people would cower at hearing that tone from a very sizable troll who was well armed, but the two women didn't even flinch. They were an odd bunch to be sure, a troll with two women standing next to him, one human and one elvin, and another elf with bright red hair that made him noticeable for miles. The troll himself was frightening enough, standing over seven feet tall and easily weighing in at five hundred pounds; it was the elf standing next to him that attracted the most attention. On reason was that she was pale even for an elf and standing in the moonlight of a desert night, she almost glowed. The other reason was that she was a well known media figure in Seattle 's underground social scene. Know for her unique and often dramatic old fashioned radio shows, Lily or Elle as she was more commonly known, had acquired quite the following. The woman and only human in the group, was much shorter then her companions and tended to fade into the background, with a fairly average appearance. This suited her quite nicely and she used that tendency to her advantage when it came time to whip out the firepower. Despite his red hair, the other elf in the group sat by quietly while the others argued. "This isn't the first time - she's done it before. Remember Nigeria ? I say we leave her if she doesn't make it in time." Sarge groused. "In Aztlan? That seems a little harsh." Lily eyed her two shadowrun partners and part-time bodyguards. At least being her bodyguards was the cover they used most of the time. "So's missing the run. Whatever happens she damn well better not expect a cut of the payoff on this one." Ramius grumbled. The large troll was very unhappy. "Everything did go off pretty well..." Lily started, trying to calm him down. "No thanks to her! We got dreckin' lucky! We pulled of a high profile run in _Aztlan_ with minimal magical cover." "I'm worried because she didn't make the run. It's not like her to flake out and wander off sightseeing the feathered serpents before getting a look at a foreign museum. And as you yourself pointed out, this is Aztlan. I have visions of her being picked up by the Azzie magic police." Lily chewed her lip absent mindedly. She really was worried about Katherine. Normal ly the blonde mage could take care of herself, but for some reason Lily had a knot in the pit of her stomach. She just knew something bad had happened, something Katherine couldn't handle. "You may have a point there, Lily. I know I expected to have problems getting her out of the museum, not getting her to show at all!” Sarge added, picking up on Lily's worry. "But if she'd been picked up by the Azzies wouldn't we have heard? I mean, Lone Star's magical division doesn't seem to bother her any." The troll pointed out, completely failing to be concerned in the least. "Either we stay or we go. If we stay, I don't know how we'll get out of Aztlan with the target and all our gear. If we go, we can set some people looking soon as we get back to Seattle ." Sarge stated, efficiently summing up the problem. As the land-cruiser crested the hill and wound its way down towards the narrow reservoir, the argument continued. It was still going on around the parked vehicle when, with the whine of high-pitched turbines and a massive cloud of spray, the mis- matched hulk of a panzer cruised to a stop on narrow shoreline. A concealed speaker system rattled as the engine noise faded. "Five minutes and I'm outta here. Get your asses in gear if you're coming." "Well?" An exasperated Lily faced her companions, pale moonlight glinting in her silver hair. "Look, babe, I like Tits and all, but if we don't get this package back ASAP, don't none of us get paid. If you're staying, drop me a line if I can do anything, and we'll work on setting up an extraction." Ramius said with a note of finality. "I'm with him." Sarge chimed in. Lily looked at them both. “Ok you two get the package back to Seattle and collect the payoff. I'm going to stay here and try to find Katherine. I can't just leave her behind.” Sarge and Ramius exchanged glances, then looked at Lily. Sarge nodded and sighed. "No need for us in Seattle . We'll stick around. Some more physical persuasion might come in handy." Both of them took their role as bodyguard a bit more seriously then Lily anticipated. She was grateful for that. "Same goes for me, unless by physical you mean more of that lesbo stuff." He grinned. "Then I'll just sit back and enjoy the view." Lily sighed and shook her head, remembering the disastrous plan hijacking that had done wonders for her ratings, but left her having to live down making out in the airplane bathroom with Sarge and getting shot in the head. Quithas opened his mouth for the first time in the argument. “I'll take the package back to Seattle and get our payoff. That way you can find Katherine.” here's the paperwork you're going to need.” Lily handed him a small “Thank you Quithas. Remember to be careful crossing the border and manila envelope. “I'll be fine, you have bigger things to worry about, now go find out missing mage.” Lily gave him a quick hug before he left. As the parti-colored panzer lifted skirts, the ancient land rover watched it zoom off down the reservoir, and then turned back towards the neon-lit pyramids of Tentochitlan. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
