I do not own Breath of
Fire 2 or any of its characters. They belong solely to their creators. This is
my first fan fic, so hopefully it won’t be too bad. The story takes place 4
months after the defeat of Death Evan. My apologies if Ryu is not how one would
expect, or if the story stinks. Please try to enjoy.
Chapter 1
He was
tired. Tired of the fame. Tired of the uneasy peace. Of not knowing if or when
the end would come, and if he would be able to avert said end. Useless
wondering, Bow would say, but then Bow was the type to always think about the
happy things. Maybe that’s why we’re such
good friends thought Ryu. I worry
about everyone’s life; he keeps the gloom of worry away. But Bow hadn’t been
there when Barubary had attacked in Infinity. He hadn’t been watching,
powerless, while Death Evan had killed his friends. Ryu envied him that
ignorance.
But they had won the battle. Ryu
had brought his friends back to life, and the world finally saw true peace
after more than 10 years of turmoil. So why was Ryu filled with unease? For
some strange reason, he had been feeling worried. About what, he didn’t know.
But this feeling was starting to cost him. Every night, for almost 4 months
now, he had woken up in the middle of the night, screaming in terror, his body
and sheets drenched in a cold sweat.
It was the same thing tonight. Ryu
sat on his bed, hands covering his face, his whole body shaking. He didn’t
remember what the dream was about, only that it had frightened him beyond
words, and that it had left him feeling lonely. And that was a feeling that he
didn’t like. It reminded him too much of the past, back when Yua and his father
were missing.
Ryu sighed, climbed out of the bed,
walked over to the window, and opened it. Taking a deep breath of the fresh
night air, he started to calm down. Outside, he could see that the lights of
the bar were still on. He could hear voices as well, which meant that the party
was still going on. Ever since news of the victory over the demons had become
public knowledge, Township had no end of tourists showing up, hoping to meet
the heroes that had saved them all. Obviously, Ryu ignored them as often as
possible.
But there was no escaping his
dreams. No sword, no amount of running, could protect him from the things that
resided in his own heart and mind. There was only one time he had been this
scared, and that was when he had been facing that false god. As he thought
about it, he could feel his body start to tighten up, and his breath started to
come in short, halting gasps. Then images started to flow through his mind.
Pictures of the demons, of the perils he and his companions had faced in the
fell creatures domain…
The
walls pulsing, seeming to be breathing, the way the monsters had leered at them
from the darkness, unending and deep, the air which had felt like it was made
from the screams of the lair’s previous victims. The floor, squelching
underneath his boots, his feet and arms heavy with exhaustion from fighting so
many battles. And Death Evan, his eyes glowing with an unnatural fire, and a
smell like a thousand corpses exuding from his body…
Ryu stumbled away from the window,
grasping his head and trying to stop the thoughts, but the memories rushed in,
unbidden and unwelcome.
The
greeting that Evan had given them, his words cold and unfeeling. Ryu suddenly
finding himself encased in crystal, and
then breaking free, only to fid that his friends were still trapped in their
crystal prison. Evan disappearing, then reappearing right behind him. Evan then
starting to smash the crystals, and his friends inside, to pieces.
Bleu was the first to die. Ryu, too
stunned to move, had watched as the crystal shattered, her scream reverberating
in the air. Ryu had snapped out of his shocked state, and charged at Evan, only
to be hit backwards, the wind knocked out of him. He could only watch as Evan
worked his evil.
Spar was the next to go. He seemed
to realize that Ryu could do nothing, and that he was doomed. He simply closed
his eyes and awaited his fate. Ryu desperately tried to get back on his feet,
to keep his last friend from sharing the others fate. Tried, and failed.
Nina, the one that he had come to
trust and care for so dearly, started to struggle against the prison that held
her. As Death Evan neared her, her ryes turned and met Ryu’s. And he could see
the look in hers, could see her fear, could tell that they were begging, pleading, for his help. And then, she
too had…
“NO!!”
Ryu opened his eyes, standing in
the middle of the room. That was it. He couldn’t take it any longer. Ryu went
to his bed, reached under it, and grabbed his travel bag. Stepping quickly to
the dresser, he threw open the drawers and grabbed an assortment of clothes. He
wouldn’t bother grabbing any food; he could hunt for that himself. Finishing
his packing, Ryu moved to the door and picked up his sword and water pack. He
walked out of the room and turned towards the stairs, going to the first floor.
Once there, he walked out the front entrance. Before the door had even shut
behind him, Ryu had broken into a full out sprint. To spare himself from these
nightmares, he would get as far away from Township as fast as he could. He ran,
melting into the night, swearing never to return.
