Prologue: Why I Want to Love Again
Notes: -Only- this chapter takes place in the Hunter x Hunter world, since I found it most fitting(You do not need to know HxH). I think the rest you should be able to figure on your own. And, yes, the chapter title sounds stupid. I suck at titles...
All characters are at least 18 years old and have been aged as needed.
Love. It was a word that rolled constantly around in her head and she could never get it out. It wasn't her intention to dwell on it, but what could she do?
Lea sighed as she looked out the window from the high-rise apartment. He was late as usual; she looked back to the two plates of uneaten food. Maybe she would just throw away his portion, then he'd learn to be on time.
So she did just that. She frowned as the potatoes and chicken fell into the trash can and was startled at the sudden annoyance of the doorbell ringing. It was about time. Opening the door a scruffy man stood there with the goofiest of grins and the most pathetic daisy in one hand.
"Uhm... Sorry... it-there was a holdup as we were setting up; the flowers had arrived late and then some papers were lost and..." Gunther stammered out.
Lea couldn't help but smile at him, though secretly feeling regret at tossing his food. He was late, but he worked hard. The auction was quite a big event, everyone knew that, and its success was critical for York Shin City. Not to mention their own income. They were still young, Lea only 18 and Gunther, 22.
He entered the room and noticed it right away. He chuckled, "Lighting up the room all with candles... You really like them, huh?" It was one of her common habits to do so, along with spelling her name out, claiming too many people spelt it L-i-a by accident.
She closed the door and followed close behind. "I don't care much for the scents, but the small flames always make me feel so comfortable. They dance silently; it's peaceful here."
Gunther smiled at his girlfriend, but knew that York Shin City was anything but peaceful. There was always a lot of crimes and underground happenings going on. That was why security was so tight at the auction even as it was only being setup. He looked over at the one meal set on the table, "Were you eating dinner?"
"Yeah, and... Sorry, I threw yours away..." She cast her eyes down to the patterned carpet, "I was... impatient. But you can have mine; I'll make something else."
Gunther approached her and stroked one of her bright red locks from her eyes. She had the most scarlet hair he had ever seen. It definitely did not fit her persona of being a rather quiet, gentle girl, but it was one feature of hers he loved. He fit the daisy he held into her hair and thought she looked perfect. "I ate a bit earlier since I was late, so don't worry about me."
Lea just looked into his eyes and smiled. She watched as Gunther stretched and took off his jacket, getting comfortable into a chair and book.
Lea was content. Everything was so well in their little apartment.
That night, the two lay in bed together side-by-side. The business of the streets could be heard; cars driving by and beeping at each other. An ambulance sounded in the distance as Gunther spoke up, "Lea, what do you want out of life?"
Lea snuggled into her pillow a bit. Gunther didn't normally get too serious in conversations, but right now felt different. She briefly wondered why, but was silent for a moment as she contemplated the question. "To be with you." She stretched out a hand to clasp it around one of his. "To love," she said with a small giggle, "That probably sounds childish, but... I think it's best to love moreso than to hate."
Gunther snuggled close into Lea then. "You're always so warm. You have the warmest, most loving heart out of anyone I've ever met." He meant every word more than what could be described in words. "Ever since I met you, at the auction four years ago, I knew you were different from other girls."
Lea's eyes shone a bit, "That's right. Our anniversary is soon..."
Gunther gave a small noise of agreement. "For myself, I've always wanted to see the world, but it's obviously too expensive to travel. That's why I'm so in love with the auction. There are so many items you see that you would never to have believed existed. And even more, it's fun to think of the greater world out there. And if it's so diverse here, what are other worlds like?"
The question floated in their minds, though Lea didn't dwell very long on it. She didn't think too much about the greater picture, but simply of what was right in front of her. Maybe it was for that reason she was able to care so much for those around her. "Now let me ask you something."
Gunther turned to her, looking intently, as she continued, "If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?"
"Hrmm... Good question," he started and had to think for a while before answering, "Being born into a poor family. I'd rather be rich."
"Heh. Such a typical answer," Lea teased. Gunther grabbed a throw pillow to playfully hit her with. They both laughed, afterwards an odd silence manifested itself.
"Then, what about you?"
Lea's smile turned into a serious face. She was facing away from Gunther and an air of honesty could be felt between the two. It was a feeling that made Gunther comfortable around Lea and he settled in as he awaited her response. "I wish I could be a man."
Gunther didn't hesitate, "Penis-envy?"
Lea turned to glare at him. "No." Gunther was such a man sometimes. "Just because... sometimes I feel weak; controlled by my emotions, because women are generally more emotional than men. Sometimes I wish I didn't have emotions, but I know I'd hate that. And other times, I wish I were a man, so I wouldn't cry so easily."
Gunther looked a bit surprised at her answer, "That's ridiculous. Men are emotional too. We can break easily, and cry, and be hurt, it's just shown differently."
Lea thought about his answer before he continued, "Men can be just as weak."
She felt it was true, but couldn't help but not believe it. Perhaps it was because of the natural social standing that she felt it, but she didn't ignore it at least. She'd think more about it later. For now, however, she let the heaviness of sleep overtake her as she fell asleep in Gunther's arms.
Before Organization XIII had thirteen members, they were merely known as the Organization and at this time were still only just forming. The Nobodies resided in the World That Never Was, resting unstably between light and dark. The Castle That Never Was and the surrounding buildings seemed to have always been there; as if nonexistence had been anticipated or maybe always not-there.
Xemnas, the Superior, had recently decided on a number system to designate the members. This would be most convenient in the case of quarrels. The lower your number, the higher your authority. This rule was extremely important as the Nobodies generally didn't get along with each other.
It was no question as to why they had so many fights. Difficulties agreeing and rather unique personalities did not bode well, plus it was generally known (though never spoken) that the only reason anyone put up with anyone else, was for their common goal.
Kingdom Hearts.
Xemnas stared at the fixture in the sky. The only thing he longed for was its completion, but right now its state was like that of a larvae. Still so young and devoid of any hearts. A keyblade bearer had yet to appear since the plan had been formed. Xemnas and the others could only wait and they were not very patient.
He sat in the meeting room with the six other members already shown up. It was typical for meetings to begin with strange silences as Xemnas gathered his thoughts together. Finally, he spoke:
"It is important for us to grow. For when the keyblade bearer appears, he or she will not be a mere pushover. We need those strong of heart; more powerful Nobodies. II has already been given this mission." Xigbar nodded. Xemnas motioned towards two others, "III and VII, you will also search separately. Use heartless if need be." Xaldin and Saix gave their confirmations of accepting the mission.
The others were interested in the use of heartless in this mission. If they intentionally created Nobodies, wasn't that counterproductive? But then again, it was Xemnas. This mission was particularly important as they need growth, so the three chosen had set out no sooner after the meeting had officially ended. No questions need be asked.
Lea awoke with a yawn and a realization of cold air to see Gunther not next to her. It was typical for him to get up before her, anyway. She heard the shower running and figured she'd get up to make breakfast for the two of them. She threw on a robe and strangely felt... different than usual. Like something important was going to happen. It was almost an ill-omen and Lea decided to make up for it by preparing two eggs and bacon into that kind of smiley face that were always on TV shows.
She set the plates down as Gunther walked in, smelling fantastic and the two ate having a light conversation. It was what they usually did; talking about what the day would bring, but she still couldn't shake that feeling. Lea noticed Gunther looking a bit different too. She didn't bring it up, though, and watched as he left for work.
Maybe that was destiny.
Lea got ready for her job and realized Gunther had forgotten his lunch. She sighed and made a mental note to bring him something from the restaurant during her break.
She grasped the small bag lightly as she wound her way through the crowded streets, trying to ignore people. She still felt the same anxiety within her and it had only worsened throughout the day. Even moreso, she felt the eyes of many people falling upon her. It was uncommon for anyone to stare at her, bright red hair or not, and it unnerved her even more. Steps became faster as she hurried more to her destination, only another block away. Breathing became ragged, but she heard someone call out to her and lightly grab her arm.
Thankfully, she hadn't been in too much of a rush and stopped in her tracks. The person she faced was a little, old woman. Many braids in her hair and traditional garbs of whatever culture she may have been from; she looked serious. Lea studied her, confused as to why she had suddenly been stopped, "Excuse me?"
"Your nen."
Lea only looked at her more. Nen? What is nen?
"You don't have one."
The woman let go and Lea stared only a few seconds before slowly continuing on her way. Whatever this nen was, it wasn't important right now. She would give Gunther his sandwich and ask about it afterwards.
If only afterwards wouldn't have been too late. She entered into the auction hall, felt eyes on her again, but quickly located Gunther chatting with some suits.
The eyes watching from a distance were from none other than Saix. He knew he'd be successful in this particular world and felt the strong radiance of the girl's heart. She would definitely make a splendid Nobody. However, this world held no heartless. Something Saix would easily take care of.
The wave of otherworldly creatures appeared from seemingly nowhere and everything happened as if in slow motion. Lea had seen something appear behind Gunther, and it did not look of good intentions. She scanned the room, finding a long lamp. Throwing the bag she held to the ground, she grabbed the lamp and swung it at the creatures that mysteriously multiplied and were covering Gunther. Screams were shouted, but none had reached Lea"s ears. She knew only to save the man she loved and as she knocked them aside, she couldn't see him anymore. What... happened?
The black creatures turned towards her then and lunged forth. The lamp fell from her grasp as she tried to pry them off, but the feeling - ohgod, that feeling - encompassed her body.
It was darkness. Or emptiness. Both at once. Almost a tearing apart as she felt herself fall. There was so much darkness.
And then there was nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
She felt herself step out of something and opened eyes to look at her surroundings. Pretty damn bland. Then she became aware of herself. Oh, she was a man now. He took a step forward and noticed another man appear. Or he assumed it was a man, judging by the figure made by the long coat with hood that covered his face.
"Do you remember your true name?" he asked.
"Lea. L-e-a," the habit was still intact.
The other paused a moment, seemingly thinking. "You have lost something most dear - your heart. Will you join us to find it?"
Is that why everything was so empty? "Yes." What else could he do? Looked pretty boring staying in this dreary place.
"Then you shall be known as Axel. Number VIII."
It was all Axel needed to be told. Without any suspicions, he followed the other man and joined the Organization.
Everyday he relived those final moments in his mind. Slowly, however, Gunther became a blur. Conversations became a blur. In the back of his mind, Axel still remembered. The feeling of emptiness was what his Somebody had feared most and what he had wanted the most was to love.
Perhaps that was what he was truly searching for.
