~*~*~*~*~
The salt-water breeze picks up the silver strands and blows them into the silver eyes of their owner. A pale hand reaches up and removes the hair obstructing the view of the nearly empty beach.
“He's here? I never would have expected that.”
The dainty voice, like bells and chimes and a mountain breeze all rolled into one, sounds out in the near silence. A sigh is heard when the captain announces that they've reached the small island called Destiny.
Pale skin wrapped in silver cloth. A pale foot surrounded by silver leather steps off the ferry. A slight turn and nod. “Thank you for the ride.” A silver bag flying through the air to land with a soft clink on the boat. Silence as the silver-clad body retreats from the shore.
~*~*~*On the Other Side of the Island*~*~*~
Sora sat in sand on the beach. Behind him, he could hear Riku and Kairi yelling. Well, that's not true. Kairi was yelling. Riku was just kinda standing there.
Kairi was yelling because Riku wanted to build a raft. Kairi had wanted to build the raft, too, but Riku actually wanted to use the raft. Sora didn't understand the problem. What was the point in building the raft if they weren't going to use it to escape.
Kairi could never understand why the boys wanted to escape. Her family was perfect. Her mother loved her, and so did her father. Sora could relate. His parents loved him, too. Riku, however, had it bad. He was adopted. His adopted father was evil. He hated Riku with a fiery passion that no one could understand.
Riku and Sora could understand now. He hated Riku because he couldn't touch him. You see, the previous Summer, the bastard had tried to molest Riku. Riku had hit him and left. Since then, he'd stayed over at Sora's house as often as possible. He hated having to do that, hated seeming weak, but Sora was always there to listen.
Kairi sprints forward to get Sora's opinion on the subject. He knew his answer. If Riku wanted to leave, Sora would go with him. Sora doesn't want Riku out in the world by himself. Sora would leave his home to be with his best friend.
“Sora! Tell Riku he's being silly wanting to leave Destiny Island!”
Sora looks up at the girl that everyone thinks he likes. He doesn't understand their reasoning. They act more like siblings than anything, but the populous can think what they want. “I don't understand Kairi... What's the point in building the raft if we're not going to use it?”
Kairi throws her arms in the air. “I never said we wouldn't use it! I'm just saying that leaving Destiny Island is stupid!”
Sora grabs her shoulder before she can continue. They're both the same height so, when he turns her to look at him, they look each other directly in the eyes. “There are things that you don't know about. We have our reasons for wanting to go.”
Kairi glares at Sora. “Sora...” Her voice is low and threatening. “What secrets are you keeping from me?”
Sora sighs. “They are not just my secrets. You wouldn't understand...”
That sets Kairi off. “What do you mean I won't understand? How can I understand if you won't tell me?” Her yells increase in volume and pitch until she's screeching.
Sora cups a hand over her mouth. “Believe me, Kairi.”
Kairi glares at him and emits a low growl from her throat. Sora tentatively removes his hand. Kairi glares at him and turns on her heel. Within mere moments, she's gone. Sora turns to Riku.
“Thanks for not telling her, Sora.”
Sora shakes his head. “There's no need to thank me Riku. I know she wouldn't understand.”
Riku nods and looks out at the water. Their raft sits unfinished above the waves. Behind it, the sun droops lower in the sky, painting the sky gold and purple and red. “Let's go. We can finish this tomorrow.”
Sora nods and turns to leave. Riku remains staring out at the ocean. Sora doesn't know what he's thinking about, he can never fathom what his friend concentrates on so hard. Suddenly, Riku gasps.
Sora turns around to see a ferry leaving. It's a small boat, barely big enough to hold five people. It slowly sails away. The two boys stand there, looking at the retreating boat, both thinking the same thing: What did it bring with it?
Sora turns back to his friend, his cerulean eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Let's go inside. Mom might know what it brought.”
Riku nods at his long-time friend. He doesn't know what was brought, but he feels a bit of the darkness he's always felt recede a little.
~*~*~*Sora's House*~*~*~
“Mom! We're home!”
Sora's mom pokes her brunette head out of the kitchen. Her brown eyes sparkle happily. “Hello, Sora, Riku. Have a seat. Dinner's almost ready.”
Riku nods to the woman that his friend inherited so much from. His facial structure, hair, personality, and build all came from his mother. Well, it would have to. Sora is only 5'2”, but his father's 6'3”. Riku feels bad for his friend as he sits down.
“Hey mom! Did you see the ferry? Do you know what it brought?”
Sora yells at his mom like an excited child. Riku understands his friend's enthusiasm, but can't seem to muster it in himself.
~*~*After Lunch, Still at Sora's House*~*~
“Riku, honey, when are you gonna go home?”
Riku shivers as he thinks of his home. Sora's house has always seemed like more of a home than the house in which he used to reside ever did. Riku sighs. “I don't know.”
“I know you and your father...”
“That man is not my father!”
“Okay... I know that you two have always had differences, but don't you think he'll be worried?”
Riku scoffs at this thought. That man never worried about Riku's well-being. The only times Riku ever went to the doctor's as a child was when he dragged himself there, or Sora and his parents took him. Riku shakes his head in answer to her question.
“Riku...” Sora's father, in all his blonde, blue-eyed glory, puts a hand on his shoulder. “...You know that we're willing to put you up for as long as you want, but you need to go home.” He's silent for a second, waiting for Riku to voice his opinion. Riku remains silent. “He's your guardian... He may not act like it, but he does love you.”
Even Sora flinches at that last statement. Riku keeps his calm. He nods as he stands up. He's prepared to go home, if only for one night.
