Disclaimer: I do not own Phantasy Star, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: Well, here goes. Normally I don’t post my fanfics, but after consideration, I decided to do so with
this one. It just seemed like a pity to leave it kicking around my hard drive,
collecting dust, so… here it is. If you don’t like reading about sexual
relations between men, begone at once! If you DO
happen to like this fic, leave me a nice comment or
two. ^_^ I’ll love you forever.
May contain spoilers.
It is recommended that you’ve completed PSU story mode first.
Also, it will get
pretty graphic at some points, so… consider yourselves
warned.
Pairing: Tylor x Ethan. (Well, they make it so
obvious! And it’s better than anything involving Karen, arghhh.
>_<)
Not so Different
-Toxic Star
If Ethan Waber thought he’d be glad the SEED invasion
was over, he was wrong.
There was still plenty
work for a Guardian to do, but it lacked that certain thrill the past several
months had given him.
The youth sighed
heavily as he watched the news in his room. Nothing was particularly
interesting to him, the annoying reporter ‘Hal’ least of all. Come to think of
it, girls in general were becoming less interesting lately, even Karen. He had
no clue why, and didn’t like the implications in his sudden lack of enthusiasm
towards the opposite sex- he suspected he simply didn’t want to end up like Hyuga, that was all. It wasn’t like he was interested in
the same sex, HELL no… except, it was becoming increasingly difficult to convince himself
of that, especially when he thought of…
No, NO, he was not
allowing himself to go there again. That train of thought had been banned from
Ethan’s brain. It was ridiculous, unrealistic and generally didn’t bode well.
It was just such a shame that it was putting up such a fight.
The copper-haired
teenager flopped backwards on his bed, staring with unfocused sapphire eyes at
the ceiling. Why couldn’t he think of Karen, instead? But lately he’d begun to
wonder why he found her so great to start with- she had no sense of humour to
speak of, she had a habit of talking down to him, and she didn’t have anything
in common with him apart from being a fellow Guardian.
But that would be too
simple, wouldn’t it? Nothing was ever simple for Ethan. Trust him to start
pining for someone who was wrong for him in every way.
“Ethan, you will end
up with a permanent crease between your eyebrows if you keep frowning like
that…” Pete chirped out of the blue, floating over the reclining Guardian and
peering down at his face.
Ethan made a face at
the robot. “I’m too young for wrinkles.”
“You’ve been looking
particularly stressed lately, but I am unable to detect why.”
Ethan rolled onto his
side, sighing again. “Yeah, never mind.”
“Wouldn’t it be better
to talk to someone about whatever it is?”
“Like who? There’s no
one who would see this from my point of view,” Ethan grumbled in reply.
“What about Master Ryght? He is your best friend, is he not?”
“He is the LAST person
I would tell!” Ethan laughed outright. “Trust me, this
is something I’m keeping to myself.”
Pete said nothing,
hovering near Ethan with that perpetually cheerful face.
Ethan glared back at
the robot before getting up and stretching luxuriously. “I’m gonna go for a walk, clear my head a bit,” he said
offhandedly, and left the room.
*****
After walking around Clyez city with no particular destination in mind, Ethan
bumped into none other than Tonnio Rhima- quite literally.
“Hey, watch it, Ethan!
Ya big oaf!” the small beast scowled up at the taller
male.
Ethan couldn’t help
but grin. “It’s not my fault I didn’t
see you, you don’t even make it past my knees.”
Tonnio growled and jabbed Ethan’s side. “Ah, shut
your trap. Anyway, what were you doing? Just walking about like a weirdo?” The
bratty Guardian dusted himself off, his azure eyes glittering with mischief.
Ethan shrugged.
“Something like that.”
“Well, I was gonna go see Liina on Moatoob. You wanna come along?
I’m sure she’d be happy to see you. Tylor, too.”
The colour immediately
drained from Ethan’s face, before promptly flooding it again in a blush.
Tonnio stared at him. “What the hell’s up with your
face? What did I say?”
“N-nothing…” Ethan
stuttered, covering his face self-consciously with a gloved hand.
Tonnio just shook his head, obviously not convinced.
“Well, whatever. You coming or not?”
*****
Ethan doubted he had
ever felt such a strange mixture of dread and excitement before. His entire
body felt too warm, and he knew it wasn’t because of the hot climate on Moatoob.
Alfort Tylor. For some
reason, Ethan had not been able to get his mind off that man. Thinking of him
never failed to send a rush of nerves straight to the pit of his stomach, and
he constantly found himself wishing they would accidentally cross paths, like
they used to do during the SEED invasion. Luck hadn’t been with him thus far,
however, and he hadn’t seen the rogue leader since then.
He wished he knew
where this sudden infatuation had come from- it was as if he had just realised
one morning how attractive the older man was. Not only that, but how much they
seemed to understand about each other. Even when they’d still been enemies,
there had always been that understanding. Somehow, Ethan just knew they had the
potential to be very close friends.
Appealing as that was,
however, the young Guardian found himself imagining what it would be like to be
even closer. And what worried him most was how often he did it… and how warm it
made him feel.
But the odds were
completely against him. Not only was Tylor a rogue,
but he was a beast, and Ethan had never seen a beast take interest in a human
that way. The fact that they were both male wasn’t such a big deal anymore, not
since people let their minds broaden with the advancing of time. That didn’t,
however, mean that Tylor had any tendency to have
sexual relations with other men. The thought that he probably didn’t was like a
kick in the gut to Ethan.
“Hello-o? Ethan, you are so out of it today!” Tonnio whined, tugging the hem of Ethan’s jacket. “What’s
up, already??”
“Nothing,
ok?” Ethan said, his tone a bit desperate. “I’m fine, really. Where are
you meeting Liina?” he asked, trying to calm himself inwardly. It was difficult, though. He knew he was
going to panic when he saw Tylor again.
“Gawik’s pub. Gawik and Tylor’s
crew go way back, so it’s always been a pretty safe place for them to hang out.
C’mon, we’re already late,” Tonnio said impatiently,
dragging Ethan along through Dagora city.
When they walked
downstairs into the blessedly cool bar, Ethan was already feeling butterflies
in his stomach. He stared at the wall as Tonnio asked
Gawik where his fellow beasts were.
“Let’s go, Ethan,” Tonnio said, looking pleased- no doubt in anticipation of
seeing his crush. He walked over to a booth, still pulling a somewhat reluctant
Ethan along with him.
“Liina, hi! Sorry we’re late, this idiot is totally spaced today,” the small beast
greeted a fresh-faced female, gesturing at Ethan.
Liina looked up and beamed. “Hi, Tonnio! And Ethan! I haven’t seen you in a while!
How are you?” the deceptively young-looking beast hopped down from her seat and
hugged Ethan around the waist. “Come sit with us!”
“Good to see you, Liina… you look well,” Ethan said politely. He looked
towards the booth, seeing no one else. “Uh… who is ‘us’, exactly?”
Liina giggled, arms akimbo.
“Who do you think, silly?”
Ethan shifted his
weight from one foot to the other. He was about to reply when he felt a hand on
his shoulder, and stiffened abruptly.
“Ethan, you decided to
join us…good to see you!” came a familiarly deep voice from behind him. The
Guardian turned around to come face-to-face with Tylor.
“Oh, h-hi… It’s good
to see you too,” Ethan admitted, looking anywhere but at Tylor’s
face.
The beast tilted his
head slightly, regarding the smaller male through narrowed red eyes. “Is something
wrong? Come on, sit down,” the rogue instructed, moving into the booth at the
opposite side of the table from the two small beasts.
Ethan swallowed,
squeezing in beside him. He was slightly alarmed to see that Liina and Tonnio were already
engaged in private chatter, which left him in silence with Tylor,
the man he’d been day-dreaming about for at least a month.
“So, what have you
been up to? Missions obviously, but… aside from that?” the handsome beast said
conversationally, turning in his seat to face Ethan, who was going slightly red
from the close proximity.
“Ah, yeah… yeah,
missions. Just missions. Nothing exciting at all, it’s
actually been pretty dull,” Ethan said with as much ease as he could muster.
“That so,” Tylor said, nodding. “So why do you look so stressed? It’s
not like you at all.”
Ethan braved a look at
the man next to him, and instantly regretted it. His heart all but leapt into
his mouth upon making direct eye-contact. “Uh… well. I’m not,
really… do I really look stressed?” ‘Act
natural, act NATURAL, you idiot!’ he cursed himself.
Tylor leaned his chin into his hand, peering at
Ethan soundlessly from behind platinum blonde hair.
Ethan quickly looked
away. He felt like Tylor knew all about him, just
from that calculating gaze which he only now realised he liked a lot.
“…Maybe a drink would
soothe you a little. You seem pretty tense,” Tylor
said in a gentle voice. He lifted a metal bottle from the centre of the table
and poured the dark red liquid into a glass, which he nudged towards Ethan.
Before the Guardian could protest, he added, “I know, you’re not old enough to
drink,” his feline mouth quirked up, “but it won’t do you any harm.”
Ethan looked down at
the glass. At this point, some alcohol did seem like a boon. “Thank you,” he
smiled slightly, and took a drink from the glass. He blinked and looked at Tylor. “It’s not as strong as I expected.”
Tylor smiled . “Well, it’s
pretty early in the day, after all.”
There was brief
silence, before Ethan worked up a little more courage. “So, what about you, Tylor...? Have you been busy?”
The beast looked
thoughtful, running one of his sharp nails along the edge of his own glass.
“Very. There’s never a dull day in the life of a rogue,” he said with humour in
his voice. He looked at Ethan. “But seeing you after such a while is certainly
a nice change from the usual.”
Ethan felt his cheeks
warming up again and quickly took another drink. “Oh, yeah?
It’s not been that long, really, but I agree that it feels like it…” he wished Tylor would speak more instead of watching him in silence-
he felt like he could listen to his voice all day.
After a moment of more
quiet observation, Tylor spoke in a lower voice.
“Ethan… you may still have reservations about me, what with our ‘occupations’
conflicting like they do, and that’s fine… but if you need to talk to someone
about anything, I’d be happy to hear you out.” He paused to take a drink. “I
just thought I’d say, because your obvious discomfort is bothering me.”
So that’s how it was. Tylor thought Ethan was being guarded because he was in the
company of a rogue. The Guardian shook his head vehemently.
“No, no, you’ve got it
wrong,” Ethan pointed out, also turning in his seat to face Tylor.
“I don’t have any problem with you. I mean it.”
Tylor seemed to brighten ever so slightly. “I see.
Well, that’s something… so, what’s wrong then?”
“Nothing.”
At that, Tylor grinned, exposing his teeth. “You’re a pretty bad
liar. You wear your heart on your sleeve, you know.”
Ethan fidgeted. “…I
suppose I do.”
“Perhaps this isn’t
the best place. So, why don’t you come aboard the Landeel
later? You can talk to me there.”
It didn’t sound like
he was getting a choice in the matter, so Ethan nodded automatically.
Seemingly satisfied, Tylor turned back towards Liina,
nodding to his second-in-command.
Tonnio looked at Ethan with a curious gaze, but said
nothing.
*****
When Ethan followed Tylor aboard the Landeel, he
noticed how quickly Liina and Tonnio
vanished, leaving the two men alone. He wondered suspiciously how much they had
surmised between themselves.
Tylor didn’t seem to notice or mind. “Through here,”
he tilted his head towards a door, and walked through with Ethan behind him.
The Guardian smirked
when he spotted the Vol brothers lurking in the
corridor. ‘Dorks.’
Hiru Vol noticed Ethan at
the same time. “Eh! It’s Ethan! What’s he doing here?”
Do Vol
made some kind of clueless noise, shrugging his huge shoulders.
“Since when do you
three question my bringing a friend onboard?” Tylor
asked, typing a code into the panel next to a nearby door.
“Uhhh,
we don’t, boss!” No Vol said hastily, picking up a
mop and pretending to clean the floor.
Ethan just stared at
the three idiots, while Tylor shook his head. They
left the ‘cleaners’ to it, entering the room.
“Wow!” Ethan blurted,
looking around the large and opulent cabin. “I guess it pays to be the leader
of an infamous bunch of rogues, huh?”
“Yup,” Tylor smiled unashamedly. He made his way over to a long,
comfortable-looking sofa and sat down. He looked at Ethan expectantly.
Catching himself, the
Guardian walked over and sat next to the rogue. As if on cue, the butterflies
started fluttering in his stomach again. Tylor just
waited patiently, not looking at Ethan.
Ethan did the same,
until curiosity got the better of him and he turned his head to glance at his
friend. Tylor had his eyes closed, and was perfectly
still apart from the slight rise and fall of his chest. Ethan took the
opportunity to have a long, unrestricted look at the older man’s profile.
He really was
handsome, ruggedly so, with smooth skin the colour of caramel. His body was
muscular but slender, his arms looking especially strong. The one closest to
Ethan was adorned with the intricate markings that beasts bore when they had
the ability to nanoblast. He traced the design with
his eyes before looking back towards Tylor’s face. He
found himself smiling as he admired his features. He had always found those of
beasts to be unusual but charming. He itched to touch Tylor’s
velvety-looking ears, and was on the verge of doing so when the rogue chose
that moment to open his eyes and look right at Ethan.
The Guardian audibly
gulped.
“Ready to share with
me, yet?” Tylor asked softly, crossing his arms
loosely over his chest.
Ethan shook his head,
looking away.
“Why
not? Something really terrible
must have happened, to make you act like this. Where’s the outspoken, dauntless
young man I met on the cargo train?”
Ethan clenched and
unclenched one fist. “…You’re right. I normally just jump in head-first, don’t
I?”
Tylor nodded with a smirk. “It’s what makes you so
likeable.”
Ethan quickly turned
and grabbed Tylor’s shoulders, pressing his mouth to
the other man’s without another word.
