Oscar reined in his horse about five strides from where Kieran lay, struggling to rise. “Are you alright?” he asked.
Kieran groaned, and squeezed his eyes shut, as though he were in pain; Oscar wondered whether the most serious injury he had suffered had been to his pride. “Save your sympathy,” he grumbled. “It’s nothing… certainly not anything that can hold back the Crimean Royal Knight--”
“--Fifth Platoon Captain Kieran. Yes, I know.” Oscar vaulted off his horse and extended a hand to Kieran. “Will you let me help you up anyway?”
“I’ll be fine.“ Kieran dragged himself up to a sitting position, attempted to stand, and slumped backward instead, supporting himself on his hands. “Actually, I think I’ll just sit here a while… it’s such a beautiful day.”
Oscar glanced up at the sky, which was beginning to cloud over, then back at Kieran. “Yes, it is a lovely day.” His armour clanked as he sat down on the ground beside Kieran, and leaned back on his own palms. “Perhaps I’ll join you.”
Kieran frowned. “That’s not necessary. I’ve told you I’m fine.”
“Oh, yes, and I believe you.” Oscar turned his usual unreadable smile on Kieran. “I did promise Rhys that I would take care of you today, though, and if that wound on your arm is still bleeding when he sees you, I don’t think I’ll ever hear the end of it.”
“What wound?” Kieran looked down at his right arm, and noticed for the first time that his shirt was heavily bloodstained just above the elbow. “Oh. That wound.”
“You must have cut yourself with your axe while you were trying to keep from falling off your horse,” Oscar supplied helpfully. “And I suspect you don’t have any medicine, right?”
“Well, a wound like this hardly warrants the waste of supplies.” To prove his point, Kieran slapped his arm; his sudden paling did considerably more to damage his cause than it did to support it. “I’ll bandage it when I get back to my tent,” he amended quietly.
Oscar leaned over and examined the wound more closely. “You might have some difficulty bandaging it tightly enough by yourself… with one free arm, and all.”
“What would you suggest, then?” Annoyance, a close cousin to the fury that constituted a major part of Kieran’s temperament, flared in his eyes. “Shall I go walking through the camp until I find someone who knows which end of the healing staff they should wave over my arm?”
“I suggested nothing of the sort.” Oscar chuckled to himself, presumably because he found the mental image conjured by Kieran’s words entertaining. “I do, however, have some fresh bandages in my tent, along with a vulnerary or two… if you’d be willing to accept the aid of your archrival, I’d be happy to help.”
Kieran snorted, and turned away from Oscar. “Absolutely not.”
“Suit yourself.” Oscar shrugged, rose from the ground, and dusted his armour off. “You may want to start heading for your tent soon, though. It looks as though our beautiful day has been cut short.” As though a sage with a Thunder tome had been waiting in the wings for their cue, lightning crackled over their heads, and a gentle rain began to fall.
For the second time, Kieran tried to rise to his feet; this time, he managed it, although his first steps were rather shaky. “Are you sure you’re all right?” Oscar called from beside his mount; his foot was already in the stirrup. “I think I may have seen you hit your head when you fell, and you weren’t wearing your helmet.”
“Oh, no, I’m fine. Really.” Kieran drew himself up to his full height and took a large step forward, which in turn nearly caused him to trip over his own feet. “It’ll pass.”
Oscar grimaced. The rain was starting to come down harder, and even Kieran’s remarkable constitution would likely prove unable to fend off illness if he remained in it for much longer. “You may wish to reconsider my offer,” he said.
“Why?” Even Kieran’s glares were starting to become less intense, and Oscar took that as a very worrisome sign.
“Because if you don’t, I’m going to come over there, hit you over the head with the blunt end of my lance, and throw your unconscious body over my horse.” Oscar smiled. “Just imagine how long it would take to live that one down. Why, I’m sure even General Tanith would feel forced to comment on it.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” The edge in Kieran’s voice was shaky.
Oscar continued to smile. “Try me.”
They stared at each other in silence for a few moments, like gladiators sizing each other up. The standoff was broken when Oscar began to draw his lance from its place on his horse’s saddle, and Kieran raised his hands in something not entirely unlike surrender. “Alright, alright…” he grumbled. “I’ll humour you, and submit to your silly attempt at playing doctor.”
Oscar’s smile still did not fade. “That’s the spirit,” he said.
---
By the time they arrived at the camp, the rest of the army had retreated to their quarters; Oscar imagined that that was just fine with Kieran, who kept glancing around as though he expected a dragon to lunge out at them from between the rows of tents. “Don’t worry,” Oscar said as he helped Kieran down from his horse. “No one’s going to catch you accepting charity.”
“Charity?” Kieran’s offended huff could almost have passed for sincere. “The only reason I consented to this was because you insisted. I would have been perfectly fine on my own.”
“No doubt.” Oscar let the tent flap fall closed behind them, and began to remove his gauntlets. “Can you get your armour off on your own?”
Kieran managed his gauntlets easily enough, but his injured arm prevented him from undoing the fixings of his breastplate. “It would seem to be stuck,” he said as he struggled in obvious discomfort. “Of all the times…”
“Here, let me.” Oscar stepped around him, reached up to his shoulder, and unfastened the offending clasp easily. “There you are. Now, watch your arm; I’m going to take it off.” He lifted the armour off, and set it aside. “Alright. Now for the shirt.” Kieran began to raise his arms with gritted teeth, and Oscar tapped his shoulder gently. “No, no. Not like that.”
Kieran turned around in time to see Oscar draw a short, thin knife from his belt, and some of the colour drained from his face. “You can’t mean to--”
“What’s the matter? Do you think your archrival isn’t dextrous enough to accomplish this task… or is it just that you’re scared to be at my mercy?” Oscar tested the edge of the blade against his index finger.
“I’m certainly not afraid!”
“Good. Then hold still.” Oscar raised the point of the knife to Kieran’s shoulder, lifted the fabric from his skin, and cut through it almost exactly along the line of the seam. As he repositioned the blade to cut through the sleeve over Kieran’s uninjured arm, he noted the tension in Kieran’s shoulders and upper back, and couldn’t help but squeeze his partially-bared shoulder in what he hoped was a comforting manner. “Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you.”
“Just get it over with.” It was hard to tell in the dim light of the tent, which was lit by only a single lantern, but Oscar was reasonably certain that Kieran was blushing.
Oscar did as Kieran asked; the blood around Kieran’s wound had dried by this time, making it very difficult to pull away the section of his shirt that covered that portion of his arm, but to Kieran’s credit, he endured the discomfort with barely a grunt. “Alright, all done,” Oscar said as he cast the pieces of Kieran’s shirt to the side, along with his knife and Kieran’s armour, both of which would need to be cleaned later. “Sit down, by the way. Make yourself comfortable.”
With unusual compliance, Kieran sat down, and as he dug through his packs for clean linen, water, and a vulnerary, Oscar was glad of it. As enjoyable as his verbal sparring with Kieran could be, his present task would be infinitely simpler if he didn’t need to deal with it just then.
Once he had gathered the necessary materials, Oscar knelt down beside Kieran, and spread out the items between them on his sleeping bag. “Alright,” he said as he moistened a cloth with some water from his spare canteen, “I’m going to clean the wound, since you almost certainly got some dirt in it when you fell. It may sting.”
“I’m fine.” There was no mistaking the uncharacteristically-subdued tone in Kieran’s voice, and Oscar wondered briefly what was responsible for this sudden change before he decided not to look the proverbial gift horse over too closely.
Fortunately, the wound didn’t require much cleaning, and once Oscar had cleared away most of the caked-on blood, it looked far less serious than he had imagined. “It doesn’t seem too deep,” he said as he uncorked the vulnerary, applied some of its contents directly to the wound, and set it aside. “It should be gone within a few days, if you give it time to heal.” He began to wind the bandage around Kieran’s arm, being careful to strike a balance between restricting his movement and tying it too loosely.
“I told you it was nothing serious.” Kieran moved his arm experimentally once Oscar had released it, and though Oscar knew he would never admit that he felt better, the relief in his eyes was impossible to mistake. “You and Rhys make such a big deal of everything. What knight worth his axe can’t tolerate a bit of pain?”
Oscar rose to his feet and began tidying away the unused cloth, along with the remains of the vulnerary. “A more appropriate question might be, what knight worth his armour goes looking for pain when he isn’t called upon to do so?”
Kieran frowned, and chose to abandon that line of discussion. “It was very… charitable of you to assist me,” he said laboriously as Oscar retrieved his discarded breastplate and gauntlets. “I… That is…”
“You’re welcome.” Oscar smiled, and placed a hand on Kieran’s shoulder. He intended the gesture as a friendly one, and so was surprised to feel Kieran recoil. “What is it?”
“N-nothing.” Kieran’s hesitation was just barely noticeable. “Your hands are just cold.”
“You’ve been acting strangely since we got here.” Oscar sat down across from Kieran, and met his eyes, which he was surprised to find were verging on panic. “What’s the matter?”
“I’ve just told you, nothing.” There was no mistaking Kieran’s blush this time, and an idea, still hazy but growing clearer by the moment, began to take shape in Oscar’s mind.
“Are you going to make me guess?” Kieran looked away and folded his arms, but gave no other response, and so Oscar continued speaking. “Because, you know, if I had to… I’d say that you were finding yourself attracted to me.”
Kieran’s gaze snapped back to meet Oscar’s, and the terror that defined it proved Oscar right, however unlikely it would have seemed even a few moments ago. “Ridiculous,” Kieran sputtered. “Absolutely ridiculous.”
“Is it?” Oscar tilted his head to one side contemplatively. “It would explain a lot, though… why you flinch every time I touch you, why you’re so desperate for me to come back to the Knights… why you can remember every detail of every competition we’ve ever engaged in.” He smiled, a bit more broadly than usual.
“I tell you, it’s ridiculous!” Kieran collected his armour and stood up. “The very idea--”
“I don’t mind, you know.”
Kieran froze. “You don’t mind… what?”
Oscar stood up, and moved within arm’s reach of Kieran. “That you’re attracted to me.” He ran a hand down Kieran’s uninjured arm. “I’m very flattered, actually… and very pleased.”
A shiver passed through Kieran, and he took a half-step back. “What…” He licked his lips, and Oscar decided that a flustered, half-naked Kieran was a very nice sight indeed. “I… You must be joking.”
“Must I?” Oscar took a full step forward, and caressed Kieran’s cheek with the back of his hand. “Must I, really?” Though the husky tone of his voice was all the answer his rhetorical question needed, he pressed his lips to Kieran’s briefly, making sure to run his tongue across Kieran’s lips as they separated.
Kieran’s jaw went slack, and dropped one of his gauntlets. “Oscar, I…”
“Stay?” Oscar breathed as he leaned in for another kiss.
This time, Kieran was infinitely more responsive, and the sound of the rest of his armour striking the ground nearly escaped Oscar’s hearing completely. His arms circled around Kieran’s back, and when Kieran boldly slipped his tongue into his mouth, he pressed his own against it encouragingly.
Eventually, they parted again, and Oscar moved to kiss Kieran’s cheek. “How far are you willing to go?” he murmured against Kieran’s ear, and enjoyed the quiver that went through the body in his arms as he did.
“I don’t know.”
Oscar grinned as he licked Kieran’s earlobe teasingly. “Would you object to, at the very least, removing our clothing?”
Kieran inhaled sharply, and Oscar felt him going to work immediately on the fastenings of his breastplate. “Not in the slightest,” he said, and his tone had become tinged with a desperation that nearly bordered on hunger.
Despite his rapidly-growing desire, Oscar forced himself to be patient while Kieran removed his breastplate and shirt. Kieran was rather clumsy, but Oscar didn’t mind; on the contrary, he liked what it pointed to, that Kieran hadn’t had very much experience disrobing other men. “Will I be your first?” he asked once Kieran had finally divested him of his shirt.
For the third time, Kieran blushed, very slightly. “In the barracks, there were a few other soldiers… we used to help each other out from time to time, but it never went past touching.” He paused, then added, “Have you done anything like this before?”
Oscar nodded, and took Kieran in his arms again; their chests brushed together, and both men shivered at the contact. “Yes… not a lot of it, but it did go quite a ways beyond touching.” His hands slid down Kieran’s lower back, massaging it.
“Another area where you‘ve got the advantage, it seems,” Kieran grumbled, but the usual intense fury with which he admitted such things had been replaced by an equally intense lust.
“That’s alright. You seem to be a quick study, and I’m only too willing to teach.” Oscar kissed him again, then whispered, “Lie down.” Once Kieran had complied, Oscar knelt down in front of him, and quickly removed his boots and his leg armour. He took far longer with the belt, pausing at least twice to fondle the sizable hardness just beneath it. Only once Kieran began muttering impatiently did Oscar get on with setting the belt aside, opening Kieran’s pants, and sliding them down his legs, leaving him completely naked.
“You’re beautiful,” Oscar said, after a few moments of staring.
Kieran’s legs curled up slightly, as though he meant to cover himself. “I’m not anything special.”
Oscar stroked Kieran’s legs gently, paying particular attention to his inner thighs; then, he leaned forward, so that his mouth was poised directly over Kieran’s arousal. “I beg to differ,” he said, and ran his tongue very delicately across the tip of Kieran’s penis.
Kieran’s hips thrust upward in a motion so quick that it could only have been instinctive; Oscar allowed it to push more of Kieran’s shaft into his mouth, pulling back only once the head was about to trigger his gag reflex. Above him, Kieran moaned, and when Oscar began to swirl his tongue around the flesh in his mouth, he gasped. “Oscar…”
Oscar pulled back in order to reply, despite the groan of displeasure with which Kieran met the loss of contact. “Yes?”
“You could have given me some warning.” Kieran almost seemed embarrassed. “I could have…” He paused. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
“Not at all. I was rather enjoying myself.” Oscar wrapped his right hand around the base of Kieran’s shaft, and began to stroke him slowly. “If you think we’re moving too fast, I’ll gladly slow down… it’s up to you, remember.” His left hand slid lazily up and down Kieran’s side. “I’ll be more than glad to finish you off just like this, if that’s what you want.”
He watched Kieran’s eyes slide closed, and felt him thrusting up into his hand; then, Kieran’s hips stilled, and he lifted Oscar’s hand away from his hardness. “I don’t want it to end yet,” he said, hesitantly, “but maybe we can slow down, just a bit?”
“Of course.” Oscar drew back so that he was still kneeling in front of Kieran, but no longer touching him. “Did you have anything in mind?”
Kieran’s eyes seemed to darken. “Take your clothes off,” he said, almost as a command.
Oscar stood, and managed a salute before breaking into a grin. “Yes, Captain.” As he had done with Kieran, he stripped away the outer layers of his clothing quickly, and lingered over his pants, revelling in the hungry gaze which Kieran had fixed on the extremely evident bulge in his crotch. “Do you see anything you like?” he asked teasingly as the pants fell to the ground, and his own arousal sprang free.
“Come here,” Kieran ordered, and Oscar came to stand beside him, clasping his hands behind his back as Kieran explored his naked body with his eyes, then with his hands. “You look… amazing.”
“Thank you. So do you.” Oscar reached down to touch Kieran’s face. “I’m at your disposal, Captain.”
Kieran smiled, and began to pump Oscar’s shaft with his left hand. Oscar lay down beside him, and began to return the favour, matching his pace to Kieran’s. His free hand cupped the back of Kieran’s head, and he kissed him as their legs intertwined, and Kieran’s stroking became more firm, more desperate. Oscar felt his orgasm building, and judged from the way that Kieran’s cock throbbed in his hand that his partner was close as well.
Then, Kieran’s hand fell away, and Oscar forced himself to stop his ministrations as well. “What is it?” he asked.
“I want to… try something.” Kieran’s eyes scanned Oscar’s face, and Oscar wondered what he expected to find.
“Anything.”
Kieran swallowed. “I want to… I’ve thought about trying…” He cleared his throat. “Penetration.”
Oscar smiled, and ran his fingers over Kieran’s chest. “Fair enough.” He rolled over so that he was straddling Kieran’s thighs. “If you don’t have any preference, I’d like you to take me. Is that alright?”
Kieran stared up at him. “You mean… you’d prefer to be on the receiving end?”
“Oh, yes.” Oscar nodded. “You seem surprised.”
“Well, I just thought that it was… difficult.”
Oscar shrugged. “It is, especially the first few times… but it’s also very rewarding.” He leaned down over Kieran, kissed him, and pressed his leg against Kieran’s hardness. “Just go easy on me in the beginning, alright?”
“Of course,” Kieran said quickly, and Oscar wondered if there was anything he wouldn’t have agreed to in that moment. “Um… so, how does this… work, exactly?”
“Well, first we need to find some lubricant. I should have some ointment around here…” Despite his body’s protestations, Oscar abandoned his place atop Kieran and returned to rummaging through his packs until he came up with a half-empty jar. “Here we are,” he said as he turned back to Kieran.
Kieran leaned on his uninjured elbow with one leg curled up, and though Oscar was certain he hadn’t calculated his position with any attention to lasciviousness, it sent a fresh spike of lust rushing through him. “What do you use it for, usually?”
“It’s a muscle relaxant that Rhys started mixing up for us while we were all in training. I don’t use it much anymore, but I guess we all just got used to keeping some around.” Oscar set the jar down beside the sleeping bag, and lay down beside Kieran again. “Did you miss me?” he asked with a smile.
In response, Kieran grasped his chin firmly and dragged him down for a fierce kiss. “I want you,” he said, nearly in a growl.
“I’m all yours.” Oscar reached for the jar and unscrewed the lid. “Do you want to do the honours, or shall I?”
“Let me.” Kieran took the jar from Oscar and collected some of the ointment on his index and middle fingers. “I don’t suppose it’s very complicated, but… tell me if I’m doing something wrong.”
“Of course.” Oscar lifted one leg over Kieran’s as they lay on their sides, facing each other, and guided Kieran’s hand to his entrance. “At your leisure, Captain.”
Kieran smirked, and draped his other arm around Oscar’s shoulders. “I like it when you say that… ‘Captain’.” He pressed his index finger into Oscar up to the second joint, and withdrew it experimentally. “Is this alright?”
“Oh, yes… keep going.” Oscar closed his eyes, and spread his legs a bit wider.
Encouraged, Kieran added a second finger, and slid both back and forth until the ointment was spent; then, he withdrew them completely, and coated them anew. “You’ll tell me when it’s enough?”
Oscar nodded. “Once more should do it.” He reached up to scoop some of the ointment on his own fingers, and ran them along Kieran’s length. “Don’t be afraid to stretch me, as well. You aren’t a small man.” He closed his fist around Kieran’s arousal, and squeezed gently.
Kieran’s eyes fluttered closed, and he spread his fingers within Oscar, who moaned softly. “I can’t wait,” Kieran said as he added a third finger, and his hips began to move against Oscar’s hand.
“Neither can I.” Oscar rolled away from him, and lay on his back, legs spread. “Take me, Captain.”
Kieran grinned, and moved so that he was lying on top of Oscar; his cock rubbed against Oscar’s thigh as he positioned himself between his legs, and Oscar wrapped his legs around his waist loosely. “With pleasure,” he said, and began to push in.
The initial discomfort was worse than Oscar remembered, but luckily, Kieran was too wrapped up in his own pleasure to notice the grimace that crossed his face. His hands moved over Oscar’s chest and stomach as he sank in steadily, and every time they passed over Oscar’s nipples, it felt as though they sent electricity through him. This stage of their lovemaking, the all-important first thrust, seemed to last forever to Oscar, but finally, to his relief, Kieran’s hips were resting against his, and his partner was staring down at him with wild eyes.
“This is… Oh, Oscar, you feel fantastic.” He caressed Oscar’s face shakily, and seemed surprised to find that Oscar was sweating. “Is everything alright? Does it hurt?”
“A bit,” Oscar admitted, and met Kieran’s worried look with a smile. “It’s alright. I’m not a virgin, and I won’t break. Use me as you will, Captain.”
Kieran smiled back, and as he pulled out most of the way, he leaned down to kiss Oscar. “Kieran,” he murmured as he slid back in, a bit more quickly this time, and far less painfully.
Oscar blinked up at him. “I’m sorry?”
“Call me Kieran.” Kieran’s lips brushed his neck and shoulder as he pulled out and thrust back in, still more quickly. “Not ‘Captain’.”
Oscar grinned, and placed his hands on Kieran’s back, just below his shoulder blades. “As you wish, Kieran,” he said. “Now that I’m ready, then… why don’t you show me what you’ve got?”
“Are you sure?” Kieran’s eyes sparkled with not only lust, but the particular brand of excitement with which Oscar has known him to meet every challenge.
In response, Oscar clenched down around him, and chuckled when Kieran’s eyes grew nearly impossibly wide. “Oh, yes, quite sure. Don’t you dare hold back.”
Kieran pulled out, and smirked. “Don’t worry,” he said, and thrust back in so quickly that Oscar was jolted an inch or two backward.
As Kieran settled into a quick, but not quite punishing rhythm, Oscar angled himself so that the majority of Kieran’s at-times-erratic thrusts struck his prostate. Before long, both of them were panting, Kieran’s hand was pumping Oscar’s cock, and it seemed clear to both of them that they weren’t going to last very much longer.
“Oscar…” Kieran gasped. “I can’t… oh… I won‘t last.”
“It’s alright.” Oscar sat up, and draped his arms over Kieran’s shoulders. “Neither will I.” He kissed Kieran, and the duet of their heavy breathing was more beautiful to his lust-hazed mind than any music. “Come for me, Kieran.”
Kieran threw his head back and cried out loudly; Oscar felt him release, and followed within moments, covering both their chests and Kieran’s hand with his seed. Kieran continued to thrust into Oscar until his orgasm was completely spent, and then collapsed on top of him; Oscar stroked his back, and waited for their breathing to return to normal.
Once it had, Oscar lifted Kieran’s clean hand to his lips, and kissed his fingertips playfully. “Well?” he asked. “What’s the verdict?”
“Amazing.” Kieran’s voice was weak, as though he were entranced. “Exhausting.”
“Worth repeating?” Some of Oscar’s playfulness had been replaced with a cautious hopefulness.
He felt Kieran smile against his shoulder. “I think so… once I’ve had a chance to recover, that is.” Almost immediately, Kieran’s breathing became just the slightest bit more regular, and Oscar knew that he had fallen asleep.
“I can live with that,” he said, and allowed himself to drift off as well.
