Kyosuke’s Angel
There was no rest for the weary.
Kyosuke stared up at the ceiling. Cheerful sunlight filled his room and he used to rely on it to wake him up naturally. But he hadn’t been sleeping lately. At night he found himself staring into the darkness as if answers would materialize for his many, many questions.Three weeks ago, his brother perished and the Justice Library went down in flames. The only body dicovered belonged to a nearly-dead Kurow Kirishima and for a brief moment, hope sparked inside of him. Days passed and Kyosuke’s clinical mentality forced him to accept his older brother’s demise.Going to school became too painful to bear. Between students distancing themselves from him and the grief welling up inside, it was too much of a chore. He couldn’t pretend he was strong anymore. The loneliness never bothered him before but he had Hyo then. Who did he really have now?Kyosuke retreated to the mansion. Eating and sleeping became bothersome chores he neglected frequently. Only the constant attention of his fellow classmates forced him to keep alive. Batsu and Hinata frequently visited him, occasionally bringing their friends from Gorin along. Learning what they worried about, he knew how to pretend things were fine so they’d leave him alone. The sickness of grief took a hold of his soul and he didn’t want to leave it. This was his punishment for his failure…his weakness. It had been a miserable three weeks. I’m done with being miserable. Kyosuke sat up in bed and flung the covers off his body. Forcing himself to his feet, he walked over to the full length mirror hanging from his closet door. He pulled his shirt off and looked at his pale form. His chest had thinned out and he could see ribs. Dark bags hung underneath his bloodshot eyes and his red hair was a tousled, frayed mess. He winced at the pathetic sight. There was never a time he looked this disgusting, even when he woke. I need to change. Kyosuke cleaned up and got dressed, putting on a black sweater with khakis. Rushing down the stairs, he paused in the living room. Someone had cleaned up the place and he could hear some movement nearby. “Kyosuke,” Shizuku called from the kitchen. “You’re up early. Did I make to much noise?”Shizuku managed to protect Kyosuke’s privacy by shooing the students away and checking in on him herself. Batsu’s mother proved to be rather authoritative and caring. Somehow she kept the balance and showed equal sides of her personality—something Kyosuke admired. “Aunt Shizuku, I think I should go back to school.” Kyosuke slipped into a chair at the kitchen table. The woman wiped down a counter but stopped and turned around. “A-are you sure?” Her voice brimmed with maternal concern and tugged on something deep inside. “Of course. I’m fine.” He assured her. Just then, a cold tear escaped his left eye and ran down his cheek. He pulled off his glasses and wiped it away, confused. He didn’t feel like crying…did he? A sob escaped and he lurched over, bursting into tears. Shizuku shook her head with a sigh. Kyosuke grew disconnected from his own emotions since then. She’d seen it in Hyo when he’d abducted her and now his brother followed the same tragic path. “Kyosuke, you’ve been taking this too hard…you can’t go on like this.”The redhead slowly regained his composure. “I know,” he agreed. He stared down at his right hand. “H-he died in my arms; I just can’t get it out of my mind.”“I understand but you can’t let grief destroy you.” She wrapped her arms around him. “I know he’s is in a better place free from Mugen’s influence.” Kyosuke pulled away from her embrace. “Maybe I’ll go for a walk, some fresh air might do me some good.”“It’s a start,” she said. “I’ll be at work for the rest of the day but don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything, Kyosuke.”“Yes ma'am,” He said with a smile. “I’ll see you later.”Shizuku nodded and headed to the door, kicking off her slippers. She stepped into her flats and left.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Bells began chiming and snapped Kyosuke out of his trance. Once he started walking, he’d tuned out and marched along. The young man slowed to a halt and looked up at his surroundings. He’d wandered into a city park. It was a rather nice area but sparsely populated. He assumed people were at work or school today. The pleasant gurgle of water reached his ears and his eyes rested on a large, ornate fountain. Glancing down at his watch, he noticed it was a quarter past noon. He marched over to a bench and flopped down. Leaning his head back, he faced the bright blue sky. A smile played on his lips. It was a nice day today. Bubbly laughter invaded his thoughts and he searched for the origin of the sound. Two boys played catch, throwing a red ball to one another. The taller of the two flung the ball at him a little too hard and hit the smaller boy in the face. The child dropped to his knees and burst into tears, while the seemingly older one flocked to his side. He asked him if he were alright and suddenly the kid brightened up. He punched his friend in the arm, scooped up the ball and ran off. The other kid chased after him and they continued to roughhouse. Kyosuke winced. He and his brother used to play like that when they were little. His stomach churned and he got up to leave. Coming outside was a mistake and if he stayed any longer…Gentle music floated through the air played by a violin. For some strange reason, the music soothed him and he no longer felt queasy. At first he didn’t know where it came from but as he ventured around the fountain, he could hear the beautiful tune much louder than before. The melody led his attention to his creator: a young woman in an ornate blue dress. Her pale hair was coiled in tight large curls and his eyes widened when he recognized her. He didn’t know the fate of Kurow’s sister and barely knew her name. He remembered her melancholy presence at the young man’s side, contrasting the hyperactive glee from his other consort who was a young tennis prodigy from Gorin. Her eyes were closed in deep concentration and she swayed with each graceful stroke against her violin.A flash of anger boiled over him. Kurow caused the ordeal in the first place but at least he had a chance to live. He clenched his jaw and considered confronting her but calmed down a moment later. She continued playing and a small crowd collected around her. Kyosuke shuddered. She wasn’t her brother and she seemed to be as much of a victim as everyone else. Seeing himself in her, he felt she could be a kindred spirit among those who tried to rebuild their lives in the aftermath. A strong urge to learn more about her rose up and he told himself, someone who made such soothing music couldn’t be all that bad.Her music is breathtaking…and she is so… The music stopped and the applause shattered his train of thought. The young woman quietly thanked her growing audience and started handing out flyers. Kyosuke slipped out of sight and after lurking for a little while, asked someone passing him to look at the flyer.“You can have it.” He added dismissively and continued on. His eyes scanned over the paper. In flowing letters, the flyer announced:Interdistrict Spring Recital! 7:00pm.
Perfect. He’d have plenty of time to get ready and then he’d go and listen to her play. He mused over what else he’d do today when his stomach gurgled. He blinked and put a hand over his abdomen. Feeling hungry seemed abnormal to him but now he desperately craved food.He chuckled. “Guess that’s something to do.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
