This is part of a series, though stands alone in its own right as a collection of tales. This entry will contain the stories of Harla, hobbit from the shire, and Guardian ofthe free peoples. This intial entry contains some brief backstory for Harla.
I sustain myself upon your comments, please do not starve the writer.

Edit Note: Harla's tale now has several chapters up, and thus this place-holder is no longer required. Feel free to skip ahead to chapter one if you wish. Any detail listed here will also be covered propperly in the course of the story, so you won't miss anything.
I will leave this piece here, however; this overview, particularly concerning the circumstances under which Harla left the shire, are as she might tell to another... they are not, strictly speaking, the truth or the whole of it. The actual circumstances of her departure will be recounted in later chapters, however.

A Guardian's Chronicle: Heart of Fire
Placeholder: The History of Harla
Harla was born some thirty years ago to the unfortunate meeting of her mother and a roving Orcish creature. Not of good solid Shire folk, her mother had been a rarity among hobbit kind; one who explored and travelled, but after surviving this experience she sought the shire once more, desperate for the comforts of things she knew.
Barely clinging to her life, she passed out on the borders of Buckland, and was brought in and cared for. She remained unconscious and on the verge of death for four months, and when the physician tending her discovered that she had fallen pregnant, he cared for her as such.
Eventually, Harla's mother recovered and discovered her plight. At first she wanted rid of the child, but knew it was too late for such. Thankfully, an elven scholar of some learning was in the shire to study the small folk and heard of her situation. With her arts, she was able to alter her pregnancy so that the mother's countenance would be dominant, and that the child, while still of mixed blood, would appear a normal hobbit, and if raised well would be every inch of her a hobbit true.
Her mother was satisfied with this and trusted the elf's words, claiming she did not hold it against the child, and that she would give it as much care and attention as if she had chosen to have it herself. Unfortunately, even with the scholar’s aid and influence attempting to ease the pregnancy, it was a great strain on her mother, and she passed only a short while after Harla was born. The girl child then became very much a ward of the Shire, and as fate would have it, she grew and appeared to be as much a full-blooded hobbit as the next, though perhaps with slightly unusual features and darker skin tone than most. As fast as information spreads in the Shire, those who knew of her heritage tried not to make issue of it, and she was treated with, if not warmth, then at least friendly, albiet wary, regard by those the adults of the areas she spent most of her time in.
The children, unfortunately, were another matter, and there was a fair amount of teasing and fun-making on account of her darker complexion and unusual features. Harla herself wasn't one to take this lightly, partly due to the fact that she did, indeed, still have orcish blood in her veins and was quite volatile by nature, and as a result she spent a lot of her youth and early teenage years in scraps and fights with the other children; always ready, if not eager, to give back as good as she got from any of them.
One side effect of an upbringing like this, though, was that she found she didn't much stand to see others being treated as she often was, and was just as quick to pick a fight on someone else's account as her own. It happened that by the time she was in her late teens, most disputes or disagreements would abruptly break off and resolve if she showed up, and she found that she rather enjoyed this fact, even if she didn't fight as much as she used to. Though her hot temper never truly cooled, it did become less of an issue the older she grew.
As she aged, the features that might have led one to question her blood seemed to lessen and her mothers appearance grew through more strongly, until, at almost her full maturity one would never guess she was anything but a normal hobbit. However, her orcish blood had other effects, giving her a lot more fight than most, and the ability to outlast and the beatings of those she did fight with, as well as strengthening her own blows considerably. By the time the other adults of the Shire started to question what she was going to do with her life, Harla decided that, for now, she'd join up with the bounders, and they were glad to have her.
She ended up working the area bordering the Brandywine, and crossing into Buckland often as well, and as it happened, another aspect of her mother, the love of exploration and adventure, won through in time. About a year after taking up her post, she abandoned it, intent upon leaving the shire to see more of the world. It was while she was setting her affairs in order to leave that she was caught up in the terror that descended upon the Shire one night in the form of the black riders, which saw her carrying an urgent message toward Archet. This was the beginnings of her life as a guardian of not just the Shire, but of the free peoples everywhere, and it is forward of here that most of her stories will be recounted.
