Author's note: Had an odd story idea the other day, while watching British military historical drama, of all things. Among other things, this story takes place in a world where Gary Gygax had a different outlook, thus a different influence on the gaming industry.
But having played D&D in the early 80's, when it was held by many to be on par with pedophilia and public masturbation, it may not have been all that different in public perception.
------------
Earl groaned as the car rounded the corner of the development. His roommate was home.
"Feeling bad?" his LPO asked, misunderstanding the noise. "Did you drink enough water at the trainer?"
"Before and after every fire and during the debriefs," Earl replied. "I kept hydrated, I feel fine. I'm just glad to get home." He pointed vaguely at a strip of townhouses. "Anywhere along here's fine."
"'Kay," Anderson said, pulling over to the curb. By luck, he pulled right behind Nigel's car. "Hey, look at that bumper sticker. 'I play V&V and I'm proud.' You know what that shit is, don't you?"
"Vixens and Vore," Earl said. "Yeah, I've heard of it."
Anderson shook his head. "I don't mind hot chicks, or eating them outbut with ketchup? Sickos."
"Yeah, well, takes all kinds," Earl said as he got out of the car. He stood and waved as the senior petty officer turned around and departed. Only when the car was out of sight did he turn to his front door.
"Home," he shouted at the bottom of the stairs. He jogged up to change out of his dungarees.
"Didn't hear you drive up," Nigel observed from his room. Earl glimpsed him at his desk, organizing folders.
"Loaned my car to a guy in the division. His broke down and his wife is about eleven months pregnant so-" He stripped and got ready for a shower. He couldn't smell himself any more, but he knew he smelled like the firefighting trainer.
"That's cool," Nigel replied. "You need me to drive you anywhere?"
"No, no plans. Just catching up on sleep."
Nigel was just coming out of his room when Earl came out of the shower. "Hey, I'm playing my campaign at Mongo's this weekend," he said. "But if you need a ride, just gimmee a call."
"Sure, thanks," Earl nodded, forcibly ignoring the subject of his friend's gaming. He went into his room to pick out some clothes.
Nigel stepped into the doorway. "You wanna... come play?"
"No thanks," Earl said, smiling to keep it friendly.
"I have a new campaign. I think you'll like it." He fished through his briefcase and pulled out a glossy photo. "I have it set on a reality show. The gamers are contestants and all the women on the show, judges and contestants and crew, all the women in the building shrink."
Earl shook his head, then noted the picture. "Hey, I know her. She's on that... cooking show." He frowned. "You shrink her and other women on that Chef competition? Isn't that a little... easy?"
"What do you mean?"
"Shrunken women on a giant kitchen set, in a game about vore?"
"Vore AND vixens," Nigel corrected him. "It's all are part of the fun."
"Yeah, but what's the challenge, catch 'em with a frying pan?" Earl finished dressing and turned on his laptop.
"There are more structured challenges," Nigel insisted. "Besides, part of the whole philosophy for V&V is that anything could happen."
"Anything," Earl said, deadpan. "A beautiful woman is subject to some incredible, magical change. And your hope is that she changes to bite size."
"Or at least will fit inside a pan," Nigel shrugged.
"Well, I can think of a lot of changes more fun than that," Earl said. "Like naked, or horny, or empathic abilities to give the perfect blowjob..."
They looked at each other for a moment. Then Nigel tossed something over to his friend. "Roll for it."
"What?" Earl asked, catching the object. It was one of those silly dice, it had to have a hundred sides to it. Nigel practically danced on the couch the day he bought it.
"Like I said, anything can happen. Roll for it."
Earl made a sour face and dropped the die on his desk. "I'm not playing your..." His voice trailed off. Nigel was staring at the desk.
The die had rolled to a stop. The thing was white, with black lettering on each tiny facet that was a 'side.' The numbers ranged from 1 to 100.
The side that had the number 100 was colored differently, significantly. The face was black with blood-red text for the number.
"Is that... a good roll?" Earl asked.
"I've never seen that die roll a hundred before," Nigel whispered. "That's... that's major."
"It's literally one in a hundred," Earl said, rolling his eyes. He tossed the thing to his friend. "Go play your game."
"Maybe I should hang out here," Nigel said. "To see... Maybe you'll need help."
"YOU need help," Earl said. "OUT!"
