No one. I feel so lonely! PM me up if you're also an obsessive AkuRoku lover and have a flair for nair! I mean editing! Yeah...
~~Warnings~~
AU. Yaoi!! but you should already know that. Abuse, language, cutting, emo teens, dark clothing, smoking and drug use (which I in no way encourage), wild house parties without parental consent, playing hooky, and loads of other good (translation = bad) stuff.
~~Summary~~
Axel's life has been upside-down since day one. Growing up without parental figures was bad enough. Being raised by an older brother who's favorite past-time was playing jokes on the law was more than he wanted to handle. His junior year had ended horribly, and mere days into the new year his grades began crumbling considerably. Only one option lay open for freedom and even then the finish line seemed unmeasurable. College applications were due and Axel had accomplished in handing in none even though moving miles away with his friends was his biggest goal right now.
There was only one last chance. If he failed in obtaining passing grades this marking period he'd have to repeat his final year over, which meant living with Reno for another 365 days. No way could he let that happen. Eighteen years of abysmal hell in that household was enough. His mind was clear and his resolve true. Old habits die hard but for mental peace and lifelong serenity he will try his damnest.

Chapter 1
Afternoon Chases
*
"Kindly move outta my way cupcake before I run you over."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Fucking finally.'
The final bell of the day rang, and the clamor amongst the students began. One extremely tired red-head remained in his seat for an extra handful of seconds, stretching his long, aching body which seemed a feat in itself inside such a cramped school desk.
Axel, as he let anyone know who regarded him, let loose a loud yawn he had been holding in for nearly 45 minutes. The gesture earned him an irritated glare from the professor who had resorted to raising his voice to gather the attention of the class, but his announcement over "vitally important homework" went unheard as one-by-one the students exited the classroom. Sighing, the professor gathered his own belongings and headed out as well.
Peace and quiet at last.
Staying awake in class was a lot harder than Axel had originally planned. Paying attention to each of his seven teachers throughout the day and not just nodding his head in mock understanding was a skill he had yet to master. He was getting there, even going so far as bringing in simple tools that will save his life tomorrow once fifth period rolled around: pen and paper.
A pair of blue-inked pens and college ruled paper neatly stacked inside a plain black binder. And a folder in case lessons got that intense. How could he had skipped over such valuable and needed materials all this time was beyond him.
Alas, school was over and rest beckoned. Axel would have to run through the winding halls, sprint across the parking, hop onto his bike, and hold his breath as he blatantly ignored all traffic laws if he wanted alone time for some shut-eye before his brother returned from work. All was possible if he weren't such a lazy bastard.
Belting out a final sigh, Axel lay his head back and closed his eyes, assuring himself he wouldn't fall asleep like last time. If that did happen, he's sure the custodian wouldn't mind giving him another wake-up call.
Axel's eyes shot open when he felt a paper ball smack against his forehead. A grinning fool with obsidian hair and dyed white streaks through it leaned over him. His one eye, as the other hid behind an eye patch, inspected Axel's face, perhaps in search of hinting pain.
"Xig, get your face away from mine before I take your other eye out," Axel warned, a growl low in his throat.
Xig, or Xigbar as the school roster had him registered, chuckled in his friend's face before pulling back and broadcasted to what seemed to be other students who had lagged behind, "He's alive everyone. No need to be alarmed."
A snort came from beside Axel and his eyes rolled right, the image of a woman with shoulder-length blond hair came into his view. She could have been such a beauty if it weren't for her beady-looking blue eyes and a pair of antenna-like strips of hair that slicked back in the air.
"When have I ever showed any sympathy for that lug nut," she said with a roll of her eyes, her mouth one degree away from a perfect sneer. She was currently wrestling with the tangled straps of her purse, cursing silently when her finger snagged between the metal belts.
"As if," came a voice from Axel's left. "We all know you had it bad for Axel all of last year, Larxene."
"Shut up, Demyx! Why don't you take your stupid sitar and shove it up your ass because we all know you haven't gotten and won't be getting any for a while."
"Ow. For such a cute bitch you're real mean."
"Bite me asshole."
"And risk getting cooties? Zex already has me in the doghouse. One tragedy is enough."
The red-head had not bothered to move, waiting instead for the banter to play itself out. Maybe now the usual headaches which submerged in the past as a result of his ill-timed input will fail to appear. Oh how naive he had been.
A pair of desks crashed together, followed by the shriek of a man as he took a hard tumble to the floor. Axel groaned, already feeling the stinging pain travel through his head.
'Demyx, you, are officially the spaz of Twilight High.'
The original silence Axel was after had been shattered by his friends and the peace he so desperately desired after a work-filled day was shot dead and buried. Grumbling nonsense, he hunched lazily over his desk. He grabbed his bag which had somehow shifted from behind his chair to the dirty class floor and began cramming his possessions into it.
"Can you watch where you swing that thing?! You nearly sent me flying out the door."
The pen in Axel's hand nearly snapped in half by the pressure he held it with.
Demyx pouted and for a moment it's almost possible to imagine he had not whacked the girl on purpose. "We're both headed out. I was only trying to help," he replied innocently. Almost.
"Hey Axel! Call me later alright?" Demyx didn't wait for a response. He has disappeared through the door behind Larxene before Axel could form an answer in his mind.
"I swear if they weren't related, one would have defenestrated the other long ago," Xigbar said thoughtfully, depositing himself rather ungracefully into the empty seat opposite Axel.
Axel paused in his packing to regard the teen with a very confused look. "Defene-- are you just making things up as you go along?"
Xigbar grinned as he searched for something in his pockets. "And here I thought Axel was keeping up with his studies. It was our vocab homework two days ago. The one you copied off of me?"
"Doesn't ring a bell."
"Of course not." Xigbar fumbled with something box-shaped, fighting to pull it out his pocket. A few tugs and the item broke free. He offered them to Axel, who shook his head in refusal.
"Nah, man. I'm trying to quit."
"In theory. Here in reality, your own stash isn't enough to keep you going."
Axel glared at Xigbar though he knew the man was right. Times were tough with all the catching up he had to do, and midterm season would soon be right around the corner. He had been trying to curb his mild addiction to cigarettes but now was the time he needed those quick pick-me-ups in order to get through the day. How the mighty have fallen further.
"I flushed mine last night." Indeed he had. Reno had to forcibly extract Axel from the bathroom, more so because he himself had to take a leak.
"Dude! Do you know how much that cost me? And not just the price but the risk?"
Axel waved a hand to calm his friend down. "You're getting your money. Once my bi-weekly check kicks in, I'll withdraw what I owe you."
"Everyone knows you have a nice stash hidden away. Why do you always wait an extra week to pay your debts?"
Axel exhaled an exasperated sigh. Tugging his bag over one shoulder, he grabbed his helmet from beneath his chair and trudged toward the exit with Xigbar close behind. "I like making sure my balance never falls below a certain amount. End of discussion. I'm heading home. Maybe I'm lucky and Reno suffered a terrible accident on the way, mental or otherwise."
"Ha, good luck with that one." Xigbar turned and regarded a retreating Axel. "Hey remember. Ultra important must-save-your-ass-from-failing-again study session at Zexion's this Friday."
Axel groaned, pressing a hand to his face in annoyance. "Xig, it's Wednesday. Reminding me every day of the week of this dreaded get-togther won't make me any chipper about it. The whole event has lost it's shine. I'm not going!"
"Uh, uh. Unacceptable." Xigbar reached out and latched onto Axel's right ear, pinching the lobe hard. "Your scrawny ass will be there," he began, the glower of his single eye matching the threatening edge in his voice, "No way will I be the only one present in a room with two love birds picking up where they left off." One final painful pinch and he set the appendage free. "Got that memorized?"
Axel took two steps back once released to prevent further abuse against his sensitive body parts. "Who can forget with Demyx parading around the school because he's finally allowed back in the guy's house." He rubbed his aching ear, glaring angrily at his friend. "That hurt like a bitch. Have you been practicing?"
Xigbar only laughed, confirming Axel's suspicions. "Don't fall asleep at the wheel," he said, patting Axel's back in goodbye.
"Can't promise you that."
Axel swung left, his next destination the parking lot. He quickly glanced at his watch, attempting to ignore the weird insignia that vaguely resembled an inverted penis (an April Fool's gift from Demyx) long enough to read the time. 3:15 pm. He had another good fifteen minutes before his brother arrived and converted the house into a frat party.
'Alright legs, show me why I was meant to grow so freakishly tall.'
The long hallways that ordinarily took minutes to navigate during school hours had been crammed into finally reached the end of the winding hall, smacking open the double remaining rays of the retreating sun washed over him, the heat a huge welcome over the slowly chilling weather. Although the lot was huge, Axel never could find a close enough parking space in the morning. Or maybe that had to do with his getting to school late...
Two stifled yawns and one eye rub later, he was exactly four spaces away from where he had parked.
"Come on nerd. Just give me a peek."
"Hey! You always do what Seifer tells ya to, ya know?"
This was not happening.
Four students were hanging around, just a few feet away from Axel. One of them, the shortest in appearance, had his back turned to Axel, but it was simple to decipher that he was the target of the other teens verbal attack. Unfortunately, Axel had the pleasure of meeting them before, having clashed with them back in his sophomore year when the runts had been mere freshmen. (And as a general rule, no fresh meat should be found stomping school ground like they owned the place.)
The ringleader of this dismal group was not the tall, dark, and burly teen as it would appear. The aforementioned "Seifer" held that privilege. He always wore a sleeveless white overcoat atop his usually preferred uniform of a simple t-shirt and jeans. A white-haired girl stood beside him with her arms crossed, the last of his posse. Quiet and reserved, she never uttered more than a word at a time. The trio exuded fear in the younger students and laughter from the upper upperclassmen. Right now, they were hauling a nauseating pain from deep within Axel's being.
Of all places in this expansive lot to pick a meaningless fight, they had to do it directly in front of his ride?
"One last time blondie. Show me the paper and I'll let you run on home."
"SHOW."
Axel ground his teeth roughly, his hold on his bag's handle slackening. He was so infuriated at the turn of events he was yet to say a word. The group didn't help in quenching that anger, carrying on as if he were not there at all. The midgets had absolutely no manners.
"Hey!" Axel finally shouted, glad when the three main heads turned in his direction. "Do you losers mind moving this party elsewhere?" He noticed the blond boy being taunted had turned around an inch, only catching a flash of sad blue eyes watching back before disappearing as he straightened forward, head downcast.
"Whatcha say? We were here first, ya know!"
Seifer put up a hand to silence his lackey. "Stand back, Rai." He straightened his navy blue beanie, then pointed a finger at Axel. "Sorry, but you'll have to wait 'til we finish up our business here."
Axel made a bemused face at his over-assertive authority. "Maybe you didn't hear me-"
Seifer chuckle interrupted him. "We heard you. You might like calling us 'losers,' but we take care not to fail our own language amongst other subjects."
Axel clenched his hands, his fists barely trembling. "Don't know what's giving you the courage to lip off like that, but you better move. Now." If Twilight Town traffic laws didn't state helmets as requirements for riding motorcycles, Axel would have happily chucked the one at his side against Seifer's face.
"Or else what, pyro? Gonna create another 'accident' and let an innocent bystander take the blame?"
One blemish in his past, one fucking mishap he had walked in on at the wrong moment, and it always came crashing down on him. The issue had been resolved with it's forthcoming consequences, and once completed everyone involved were ordered to keep quiet. How Seifer knew was a mystery. What could not be concealed presently was the fury behind Axel's narrowed green eyes.
"Fuck you, Almasy," Axel spat out bitterly, "Everyone knows you're Hayner's little bitch, so why don't you act like it and move along."
"Tch. Let's go guys. This newb ain't worth our time anyway."
Watching Seifer and his gang retreat in their sorrowful state didn't give Axel the same satisfaction as in precedent times which blowed big time. Standing up to wannabe bullies was a hobby of sorts, but now, he wished he had never seen Seifer's face today. Normally, Axel expected this sort of commotion at his place. Having this happen out of schedule and location did not help fix his somber mood. Not one bit.
The kid got on his knees as soon as his assailants left, shaky hands grabbing his previously stolen material that had been tossed onto the gravel. A pen clattered several times before he successfully shoved it into his pocket.
'Mission accomplished here. Now I can go home and have a fucking nap.'
Axel huffed in mild aggravation as he walked towards his bike, longing to be passed out on his bed already.
"Thanks."
Axel halted in mid-step at what he deemed an unnecessary formality. He whirled around, his gaze lowering to meet with the owner of the soft voice.
Bright blue eyes stared up into his own, unabashed even after what had transpired. The teen was short, his head barely reaching Axel's shoulder. He had pale skin which he pulled off well without looking sickly, and Axel thought for a moment he saw a light pink flush run across the boy's cheeks. Golden honey tresses framed the young boy's face, the rest spiking out in disarray. He was cute, the fact was undeniable, but if he was being bullied by Seifer of all people, he must be a freshman. And Axel had more important things on his schedule than have erotic dreams with jailbait.
Axel scoffed, fishing out his keys. "I didn't do a thing. Don't waste your gratitude on me."
The boy shook his head, as if intent on proving Axel wrong. "But you chased them off. They've been following me since I left the principal's office."
Great. He was new, he was young, he was clearly out of reach.
"Well now they're not," Axel restated, turning to mount his bike. "You should go home or something. No use hanging out here."
After a moment of contemplation, the blond boy held out a trembling hand. "I'm Roxas."
Cue the obligatory eyeball roll. "And I'm a nobody," Axel responded coldly, his tone taking on an icier edge than he meant. He was extremely exhausted, his brain fried due to overly demanding teachers asking more of him than he was comfortable giving and beanie-wearing punks talking more than they should. This boy will just have to wait for a better time to hand out introductions.
He tugged on his helmet, watching as the offered hand slowly retreated back to it's owner's side. "Kindly move outta my way cupcake before I run you over. It would be real sad considering I just saved you from a pathetic ass whooping."
Those big blue eyes were on him again, but the boy--Roxas-- complied, moving several steps back to allow Axel's bike ample room to exit, his expression apathetic and not at all showing concern at being called such a name from a stranger. A single, prickling sensation stung at Axel as he pressed the "start" button and slowly engaged the clutch. He needed to ignore it.
That boy had a delectable charm, but now was not the time for the head between his legs to do the thinking. He pressed the clutch harder and sped off, swerved right, and stopped at the lot exit, waiting for the light to change.
Not knowing exactly why, Axel looked over his shoulder, zeroing in on the spot he had just been. Surprisingly, the boy was still there, sorting through his paperwork, slipping them carefully into his bag. Axel looked away once the boy was done and off in what was probably the direction of his home. That, and the constant honking of the cars behind him were a quick reminder to get his ass, and bike, in gear and drive already.
Perhaps it was his bleary state of mind or maybe this "Roxas" had left that much of an irritable impression, but Axel could swear he's come across those cornflower blue eyes before.

To Be Continued
Author's Notes: O.M.G. I'm actually done with a chapter. It took me forever to finish and find the courage to post this up. English is not my first language so I was (and still am) a bit scared, but my love for AkuRoku runs deep and will jump off cliffs if told to (not me, my love.) This is an idea I got while at work, waiting for my phone to ring. I was a bit pissy because I had forgot my lunch and my debit card to order takeout. My mind went emo and I wondered how Axel would treat Roxas if he were in the same mind set. BOOM! This fic idea was born!
I was listening to everything Gackt as I wrote up the chapter in order to keep my soul feeling dark and sad and whatnot :D especially since Hyori's album is out and it's SODARNGOOD!
Hope you enjoyed my first token into the well that is AkuRoku.
Theme Song: Just So You Know by Jesse McCartney ...... because it just fits. Give it a listen and you'll soon see why it's the main theme for the whole fic :)
