ONI ALPHA SITE,
SECTOR 10, NEW MOMBASA, KENYA, EARTH, SOL SYSTEM, MARCH 14 2542 (MILITARY
CALENDER)
The sleek silver sedan
coasted to a halt outside the cube shaped ONI Alpha Site.
“Here you are Sir, I was ordered to inform you to report straight to your
briefing, Sir.” The Private at the wheel said over his shoulder.
“Thank you Private.” The voice from the back of the car responded as the door
opened.
Rear Admiral Nathan Wallace stepped out the squat vehicle into the baking heat
of New Mombasa, his view was dominated by the Large, Black, Square building
buried in the terrain before him.
“Sir!” A young Private snapped a salute, “I’m here to
escort you to your Briefing.”
“Very well,” Wallace surveyed the Private’s uniform, “Private Rayne, Lead on.”
The Private snapped another salute and then walked towards the Entrance.
ONI, Wallace thought to himself, Spooks, Spies... what do they want with me,
whatever it is it can’t be good.
Wallace approached the entrance of the Alpha Site, he had to show his Identity
Card, Scan his Thumb print and then walk though a scanner to prove he wasn’t
armed before being allowed access to the Building.
Several Identity checks later, He and Private Rayne came
to halt in a corridor exactly like the seventeen others they had passed through
on their trip.
“Private?” Wallace asked.
“My Orders are to leave you here and return to my post Sir.” The Private
responded.
“Very well, carry on.” Wallace said, returning the Salute the Private gave
before walking off.
Wallace watched as the Private rounded a corner and heard
the hiss of the door mechanism as he entered the lift.
Wallace turned to look down the deserted hallway, what was going on? But before
he could finish his thought the Wall to his right
opened, a seam that had previously been invisible widened to reveal a group of
shadowed figures sitting around a Large, Black, Round table.
“Admiral please, you’re letting a draft in.” Came a
voice from one of the concealed figures.
Wallace stepped into the large room and the wall behind him slid closed.
It was an odd, uncomfortable sensation. Wallace felt his
very soul shrink as he moved closer to the table, further into the room. He
nervously adjusted his collar, suddenly finding it very tight as he sat down on
the one empty chair, He’d have preferred to be in a battle zone than here.
“Rear Admiral Nathan Wallace, What we are about to discuss cannot be spoken of
to anyone outside of this room, is that clear?” One of voices sounded, it was a
harsh gravelly voice.
“Yessir.” Wallace replied.
As if in complete unison all the concealed faces around the table leant forward
into the beams light highlighting the table. Wallace had no idea how big this
room actually was, it felt cavernous, but with the confines of the building it
couldn’t be, this merely added to his discomfort.
“What’s this about, Sirs?” Wallace said as he saw that every person around the
table but one outranked him.
“As you are probably aware 3 months ago the colony world
of Montressor was glassed by a fleet of covenant warships.” A tired sounding
voice replied, its owner was a silver haired woman wearing 4 stars on her
uniform, signifying he rank as an admiral.
“Well, Yes Ma’am.” Wallace responded, So far the Covenant had glassed every
world they’d come in contact with.
“The last report we received from Montressor, read that the Cole Protocol
had been enacted, and that after the Covenant had taken anything they deemed
worthy and destroyed all means of escape for any remaining survivors, planetary
bombardment had begun. As, unfortunate, the loss of Montressor was, it was a
‘text book’ loss, things had happened exactly the same way they have happened
for every lost world after the establishment of the Cole Protocol.” The woman
spoke again.
‘Unfortunate’ Wallace thought to himself, ‘UNFORTUNATE!’ Wallace had served
with people whose homes were on Montressor, Unfortunate wouldn’t be the word
he’d use to describe it.
“However,” A deep voice sounded from the other side of the table, its owner a
rather well-fed gentleman, “At precisely 01:30 this morning a deep space
monitoring station received a signal from Montressor.”
The Gentleman depressed a concealed button on the table causing a series of
beeps to fill the room.
“It’s Morse Code. More disturbing than the origin of the signal is its creator
and the message sent.” With that he depressed another button, causing a screen
that Wallace hadn’t even noticed there to flicker to life.
The Screen had been constructed into the table. The Blue screen then displayed
the message.

Cole Protocol failure, Navigation Data and AI “Rupert” Still intact and
operational.
</ Risk to
Inner Colonies and Earth if captured by Covenant Forces.
</
PRIORITY: Send forces to Secure/Destroy Navigation data and AI “Rupert.”
<//>
MONTRESSOR.ACULA.SI.AI.RPRT.
Wallace read and reread the message three times, a lump
had clawed its way from his subconscious and was now nestled quite
uncomfortably in his throat.
“Forgive my questioning but... tell me this is a joke.” Wallace said.
“Unfortunately not, The City of Accula’s Superintendent AI “Rupert” was
not purged in accordance with the Cole Protocol, “Rupert”, although a
dumb AI, Still contains Navigational Data that could
lead to the Inner colonies or Earth.” The Silver haired woman replied.
“You are going to lead a Battle group to Montressor and secure or, if
necessary, destroy the superintendent and all related data. Thankfully the AI
had the foresight to send the Morse code so the Covenant won’t be able to
decipher it, however, if they have heard the message, understand it or not,
they’ll send a force to recover the origin of the message.” The Gravel voiced
man continued.
“I understand, we can’t let the Covenant get their
hands on that data.” Wallace said.
“Correct, on the chance you recover the AI intact, it is to be immediately
handed over to the ONI agent who will be accompanying the mission,” Wallace
looked over at the only person on the table he out ranked, a Slim attractive
looking woman wearing ONI attire, “Although in tactical scenarios your rank
will be respected, Lieutenant Alitton has complete jurisdiction over all
matters relating to the AI.”
The woman leant forward, revealing her full beauty
to Wallace, she was slender and her hair came down to just above her shoulders
and was shaped around her face. If Wallace didn’t know she was a Spook he might
have even used the word ‘cute’ to describe her.
The Lieutenant looked over to Wallace and nodded.
“This mission is of the utmost importance, it cannot
fail, Earth and every other colony is at risk,
Lieutenant, you are to follow Rear Admiral Wallace back to his ship. Once
there, Rear Admiral you are to take your ship here,” The Gravel voiced man said
tapping a button sending coordinates to Wallace’s PDA, “A Battle group had
already been assembled. You will be leading it... Again I stress, do not
mention the parameters of this mission to anyone else, Wallace... your Ships AI
will have had this entire briefing uploaded to her by the time you arrive.”
UNSC CRUISER WHO’S
YOUR DADDY, EARTH ORBIT, SOL SYSTEM, MARCH 14 2542 (MILITARTY CALENDER)
The UNSC Who’s Your Daddy
was a Marathon class Cruiser, 1190 meters of 191cm Titanium A Battle plate
encased warship armed with 2 heavy Magnetic Accelerator Cannons and numerous
oversized Archer missile pods, she was a force to be respected.
The bulkhead doors to the Bridge slid open as Wallace and
Alitton walked in. Wallace had relayed the coordinates to the bridge the moment
his pelican had touched down and the ship was nearing its adoptive battle
group.
“Sir!” Lieutenant Atherton
sounded as she snapped to Attention causing the entire command crew to do the
same.
“At ease,” Wallace began, “I’d like to introduce Lieutenant Alitton,” Wallace
continued but upon seeing two of his male bridge crew, a Lieutenant Nash and
Lieutenant Jefferson, exchange a quick glance and a smirk he added, “Of Naval
Intelligence.” He smiled inwardly as the expressions on the aforementioned
crewmen’s faces drop, “She’ll be joining us for the duration of this Op.”
“May I?” Lieutenant Alitton interrupted.
“By all means.” Wallace replied.
“Regardless of what you may think of us Spooks, I’m not a heartless
manipulative bitch... well at least, not all the time. I’m here simply as an
observer and if parameters necessitate I will take a more active role, but
until that time, I’ll try and be as bearable as I can... Admiral.”
Alitton said passing attention back to Wallace.
“As you are all aware I detest not being able to give my crew a thorough
briefing before a mission but unfortunately my orders stipulate the utmost
secrecy and for that I apologize but it cannot be helped, to your stations
prepare for immediate departure.” Wallace concluded.
“Sir!” the response sounded.
Wallace turned to the Bridges holotank, “Morrigan.” He said.
The holotank hummed to life a translucent figure appeared on it, The Who’s
Your Daddy’s AI had appeared.
Morrigan had opted for her avatar to resemble the
Pagan goddess she was named and so appeared as a tall slender woman with waist
long black hair, dressed in a black and crimson gown.
“Admiral.” She responded.
“I assume you have received and reviewed the mission briefing?” Wallace asked.
“Indeed, most disturbing.”She responded her voice soft and unwavering.
“Good, please assist Mr Jefferson with calculating a slipspace jump to
Montressor.” Wallace ordered.
“Very well, Admiral.” And with that the projection vanished.
“Montressor?” Lieutenant
Jefferson asked spinning in his chair.
“Montressor.” Wallace confirmed, very conscious of the
fact that Jefferson was from what used to be Montressor.
Admiral Wallace had retreated to his ‘ready room’, a
small room of the side of the Who’s Your Daddy’s main bridge to review
the battle group he’d been assigned. Three other Marathon
class, The Say My Name, the Dam-buster and the Armageddon’s
Wrath. Along with two Destroyers, the Irrefutable
and the Bloody tale. And three Frigates, the Buckshot, the
Claymore and the I’ll Be Back.
This IS a priority mission, Wallace thought to himself,
Marathon’s are hard to come by these days, and they’re sure throwing a fair few
ships at this.
UNSC CRUISER WHO’S
YOUR DADDY, OUTER MONTRESSOR, ELIPTIC SYSTEM, APRIL 27 2542 (MILTARY
CALENDER)
A whole in Space and Time was ripped open and the Who’s
Your Daddy ploughed back into normal space, followed by the other elements
of its Battle group, the ships soon organized themselves
into an offensive formation.
The Bridge onboard the Who’s Your Daddy was bathed
in red light as the ship was brought up to combat alert.
“Three Covenant CCS Class cruisers in orbit of the planet, they’re moving to
intercept!” Lieutenant Nash said hastily.
“Morrigan get a rough firing solution and fire ASAP we
can’t wait for it to be perfect, the more those ships turn the smaller targets
we have, send solutions to other ships and fire when ready.” Wallace
ordered.
The bow of the Who’s your Daddy, The Armageddon’s Wrath and the I’ll
Be Back flashed white hot as their MAC cannons fired, the other ship were
still building up a charge. Out of the 5 round fired 2 struck true causing the
lead Covenant Cruiser, the Dark Obsession’s shields to flare an electric
blue.
The sides of the Covenant cruisers began to glow furiously as they charged
their lateral lines.
“They’re prepping plasma, incoming!” Lieutenant Nash hollered continuing to
read his displays.
“Morrigan, Atherton perfect those solution and fire as soon as we have charge,
prepare the Archer pods.” Wallace shouted to his tactical officer.
“Sir.” Came the reply.
During the time it took for the vessels that did not join in with the initial
attack to charge their MAC’s they had had time to perfect the hurried solution
sent them by Morrigan and they were ready to give the Covenant a true
taste.
The prows of the Dam-Buster, Say My Name, Irrefutable,
Bloody Tale, Buckshot and Claymore erupted with brilliant
light as their cannons spoke, send slugs of metal
weighing 600 tons flying at speeds of about 30,000 meters per second hurtling
towards the Covenant lead ship.
The first round to strike collapsed the already strained
shields of the Dark Obsession and the remaining 8 rounds easily shredded
the mighty warship causing the plasma it had charged to explode flaring the
shields of its neighbouring ships.
The two remaining Covenant ships loosed their charged
plasma at the oncoming human ships.
The furious orbs of plasma tore through the distance between the two battle
lines.
An entire volley, sent from the Concealed Lance, Struck the Frigate Claymore
her armour and hull was stripped in seconds her remaining superstructure glowed
red, until the plasma breached the reactor causing the Claymore to
irrupt in a short lived fireball.
The second volley from the Thunder’s Vengeance
impacted on the Dam-Buster and the Irrefutable, boiling away
armour and stripping hulls revealing internal decks.
“We’ve lost the Claymore!” Lieutenant Nash reported.
“Firing solution attained MAC hot.” Atherton reported.
“Time to pay them back in kind,” Wallace began, “FIRE!”
The Who’s Your Daddy fired, both her MAC rounds hitting the nose of the Thunder’s
Vengeance. The accompanying rounds from the Armageddon’s Wrath
and the I’ll Be Back either missed or glanced
the ships shields.
“Release missiles.” Wallace ordered.
The round covers of the Who’s Your Daddy’s archer missile pods hissed
and opened revealing 60 Archer missiles in each pod, with a series of bright
flashes all 60 were launched from each pod.
A web of vapour trails laced from the Who’s Your Daddy to the Thunder’s
Vengeance. 50% of the missiles detonated prior to impact as the point
defence laser batteries of the Thunder’s Vengeance shot them down. The
Missiles that got through impacted the shields, causing them to flare and fail.
Archer missiles were usually reserved for unshielded
targets, but after the two successful MAC hits, they were powerful enough to
collapse the ships strained shields.
The Prows of the Concealed Lance and Thunder’s Vengeance began glowing a brilliant white.
“Energy projectors, all ships evade!” Wallace shouted down the Comm.
Two lances if pure radiation leapt forth from the remaining Covenant Vessels
crossing the distance between them in a blink of an eye.
The beam from the Concealed Lance struck the Armageddon’s Wrath
amidships gutting the great ship from stem to stern,
her reactor went critical causing the vessel to erupt in flash of light that
faded as swiftly as it had appeared.
The Lance from the Thunder’s Vengeance was aimed at the Who’s Your
Daddy but as soon as Wallace had noticed the projector being charged and
given the order to evade, a series of emergency thrusters fired causing the Who’s
Your Daddy to lurch violently sideways. Instead of the beam gutting the
entire ship it struck her bow on the starboard side causing a deep gash,
stripping her of all her armour along a 5 meter wide trench stretching from the
bow of the Who’s Your Daddy all the way to stern.
“Damage teams, Seal spaced decks.” Wallace ordered, telling the damage crew to
seal all bulkheads that lead onto decks that were exposed to space.
The MAC’s of the Dam-Buster and Say My Name
fired destroying the Thunder’s Vengeance.
“Take that ship out, NOW!” Wallace barked.
The MAC’s belonging to the Who’s Your Daddy,
Irrefutable, Bloody Tale, Buckshot and I’ll be Back all fired within
seconds of one another, With the combined fire power of over half the Battle
cluster the Concealed Lance never stood a chance her already weakened
shields gave way to the brunt of the attack and the entire ship soon followed,
concluding in a brilliant flash of light that was intensely painful to look at.
The bridge crews of all the remaining ships burst into a
chorus of cheers at the sight, but it was short lived, they’d lost two ships,
although that was technically a good percentage for a UNSC Covenant fleet
engagement it was still thousands dead, thousands of families that would grieve
and thousands that they wouldn’t have at the next fight.
