Thump, thump, thump. Leaf litter upended under the rhythmic pound of hooves, displaced as the palomino mare picked her way through one of the vast forests of Hyrule. Sunlight streamed through canopy, ribbons of liquid gold that speckled the flurry of flora winding up from the floor, reaching for what light there was. Fabric fluttered around the saddle’s pommel, the warm breeze tugging at the verdant tunic that encased the man who was barely paying attention to their direction.
Instead he listened to the forest, the sweet melodies of nature capturing his attention. Birds soared overhead, scolding an overzealous hawk that had disturbed their nesting site. Shrill calls were at odds with the serenity that otherwise resided. Life was everywhere, bursting from every tree and orifice as though to mock any attempt to subjugate the land itself. A distance away the soothing sound of water tumbling over smooth pebbles mingled in to the orchestra so often forgotten in the bustle of busy towns. Long strands of grass skimmed against his calves, fluffy seed rich heads causing the occasional twitch of the war horse’s flanks. A spray of white dandelion seeds spiralled upwards, dancing in the currents of air as they dispersed to seek out their future homes. Well-oiled leather was gathered, tranquillity tumbling away as youth’s impetuousness demanded excitement, ears flicking back to await her master’s command. “Epona, let’s fly!” Eagerly Link’s lithe body leant forwards over strong withers, digits digging into the pommel to anchor himself more securely onto the powerful back. Flaxen tail strands swished before sinew coiled and sprung, earth flying in clods in the wake of thunderous hooves. Air caressed flushing cheeks, eyes sparkling with pleasure as the world whipped by, the feeling of flight never so near as when Epona galloped. It was something he would never tire of, the blur of emerald and amber interspersed with the ivory of delicate snowdrops. Rich scents tumbled by, the most prevalent that of the earth itself thrown up in their wake. Wild laughter bubbled within his chest as if from nowhere, clinging on even as shoulders shook with mirth. Luminance broke through the thinning foliage, heat pouring over flesh as they breached the edges of the Hyrule Field. Strong limbs gathered below as they raced towards a fallen tree trunk, the earth suddenly disappearing below them as the mare soared over the last barrier that stood in their way. Sweat gathered along chords of muscles arched down the elegant curve of Epona’s neck, finally persuading the young Hyrulian to ease back into the saddle and loosen his grasp on the reins. Gaits transitioned smoothly back to a walk, albeit spirited from the excitement of the race. Hooves lifted sharply, prancing through the blades which no longer tickled her haunches. Bemused he reached forwards to rub index finger and thumb over the finely crafted ear, still turned back to listen for further commands. A soft wicker was offered in response, relaxation shuddering through her whole frame as she shook the tension from her body. It was only then he realised how warm it was, almost stifling in comparison to the beckoning shade of the forest. Soothingly fingertips scraped over the perspiration slick fur of the mare, the slightest pressure on the right rein turning her towards the sound of water winding its way through the meadow. Crystal fluid rolled and spilled through the shallow channel, a soft touch encouraging the young horse to step into the water which reached up to her knees. Nervous at first any apprehension was soon overcome by the soothing chill of the flowing water against hot flesh. Gratefully her head lowered, soft muzzle dipping into the river to lip up a little water as Link pulled the saddle from her back; perching himself by river bank to enjoy the antics of the creature he considered more friend than horse. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
