For centuries mankind has been seeking the means to destroy itself. In many ways they had been successful, however unsuccessful in their ultimate goal of destroying the planet. However, after the bombs fell and the entire world was turned into a single mass wasteland separated by a sea of unlivable ocean, humanity showed its true drive to survive. These groups of people gathered together in an effort to survive or even thrive and make the best of things. In the Capitol Wasteland in and around Washington DC, amidst the terror filled citizens, the savage wildlife, and the murderous gangs that filled the vast majority of the space in which small groups of humanity merely survived, there is a smaller group of people who enjoy each other’s company and fill one another with love and affection. @ Andrew Ross had just returned to Megaton after being thrown out of the vault as soon as he had solved the problems for his long time friend and lover, Amata Almodovar. The skirmishes had settled and Andrew had convinced the overseer to step down, but in a true act of self-righteous cunning, newly appointed vault 101 overseer Amata Almodovar turned Andrew away. Jenny Stahl, although hiding a secret longing for Andrew’s love, understood Andrew’s exact emotions. Although she had planned to reveal her feelings to the vault dweller, she buried them deep once again upon seeing Andrew’s pain. Gem and Gob had been dating for many months, and as their love grows stronger, Gob hatches a plan to convince Gem to marry him, when the right time approaches. Gem, although sure of her feelings for Gob, does harbor some emotional barriers and is not sure of her relationship status at the moment. Even in the smallest communities, friendships are forged, problems are solved and formed, and all of these are done under God’s ever lingering gaze. However, in any and all relationships and friendships, partnerships and existenses, mankind must strive for compassion and understanding for one another or risk once again tearing each other apart. Because war…war never changes. --------- CHAPTER ONE: THE DAY AFTER Andrew Ross awoke to the slots of light filtering through the gaps in the metal of his Megaton house touching down warm and gentle on his eyes…again. Andrew moaned and made a mental note to fix those gaps in the metal…again. Andrew Ross tried to swallow, finding it to be more difficult than previously imagined due to his constricted, dry throat due to the full bottle of vodka that he had drank the night before. Andrew rose from the bed and immediately winced. Falling back down onto the creaking, not so comfortable box spring mattress and covering his bleary eyes with one forearm, Andrew cursed under his breath. Hangovers were entirely new to him and he felt that it was an event that he instantly hated. Andrew felt a hand on his broad, muscular shoulder. The hand was soft and warm. Andrew smiled and turned toward the person lying next to him. “Its about time you woke up, sleepy head.” Gem crooned with a smile. Andrew was taken aback. The last he heard Gem was with Gob. “Did we do it?” Andrew asked groggily, covering his face once again with an arm. Gem giggled. “Of course not, silly boy. Im with Gob. You mostly wanted me here for comfort.” Gem said. Suddenly it came back to Andrew in the dreary haze of his hangover. He had asked Jenny Stahl, his friend and confidante, to come up with him to spend the night at his place, but halfway up the crater he decided he did not want to take advantage of her in his emotional state. So he declined. Upon reaching his door, he had found Gem up and about for a late night stroll. He asked if she wanted to come in. she did and the two sat and talked for an hour before gem decided to call it a night and lay down on Andrew’s heart shaped bed. Another two hours and full bottle of vodka later, Andrew himself stumbled into the bed as well, and there the two friends lay for the rest of the night. “Im just glad that I wasn’t the cause of any downfall between you and Gob.” Andrew muttered. “Nah, Gob is understanding. And besides, I don’t like you like that anymore, DAD.” she annunciated the last part clearly while punching Andrew lightly in the arm. It was true, with all the changes between the two and the more and more she looked up to him, Andrew had come to be a willing and well suited replacement for her own father, now long dead. Andrew couldn’t help himself but to grin. He had long thought himself too young for kids, but here he had one who was 16 already. Oh, merciful irony. Andrew kissed Gem’s cheek and crawled out of bed, stretching his stiff muscles with a pop. “That‘s the last time I fall asleep in leather armor. Im sore in places I didn’t know I had.” Andrew said. Gem was already up and about and had been for an hour. She handed him a metal plate with an iguana on a stick and a sliced Mutfruit. She also set down an ice cold nuka cola for him to drink. She herself had already eaten so she just sat at the other side of the table, watching him eat. “You‘re a damn good cook girl. Thank you.” Andrew said around a bite of iguana. The lizard was an acquired taste for Andrew, but he found himself growing quite used to it. “Yeah thanks,” Gem said bashfully, “Just one of the many talents Lucky Harith provided for me.” “You never did tell me how you ended up working for that bastard.” Andrew said after swallowing his bite and before picking up a juicy slice of the mutfruit on his plate. “Well it is kind of a long story.” Gem said, a splash of crimson coming to her cheeks. “I‘ve got time if youre willing.” Andrew said, chasing his mutfruit with a swig of nuka cola. Gem smiled, she wasn’t used to anyone other than Gob giving a damn about what she went through. “Well my father was a caravaneer. you’ve never heard of him. He died when I was pretty young. I was 7 when he died. His name was Sebastian Crowne. I used to travel with him as he made our living because mom died when I was 2 or 3 from tetanus.” Gem said. Andrew found himself to be listening intently to the previously untold life of this blonde beauty who seemed so happy even through trial. “Well my dad and I ran trade routes with a trader named Crow. Maybe you’ve met him, he sells armor.” Gem said. Andrew nodded and she continued. “well one day Crow was injured and couldn’t make one of his runs. He had an appointment at Paradise Falls.” “Ive only heard about Paradise Falls. isn’t that the main compound of the…” Andrew started. “slavers. Yes, it is. So my father volunteered to take the job for Crow. It was dangerous, but you don’t want to cross the slavers. they’ll do worse than kill. they’ll kidnap you and force you into slavery.” “is that what happened to you?” Andrew asked, seriously. Gem nodded. “when we got there we were greeted by this big guy named…Grouse, I think. All the while my father was talking to him, he kept looking dirty at me. I was only 7 at the time. I didn’t know what it meant, but it wasn’t good. “after a few minutes out walks this really sharp dressed black man by the name of Eulogy. Hes the leader over there. So my father is negotiating with the man when he looks over at me and smiles. He turned to my dad and offered him 2000 caps for ME. “My father was irate. He said I am not for sale, to make him a better offer on the suits of armor. But Eulogy didn’t like being told no. Eulogy shot and killed my father right in front of me and forced me into the slave position of prostitution.” “How did you escape?” Andrew asked, following the story closely. “Like so many others, I was bought. Lucky Harith bought me. I was 14 at the time. I had been in that God forsaken pen for 7 years. The first thing he did was fuck me. It hurt so bad. He didn’t even try to be gentle. He called it breaking me in. “After that he made me his caravan guard and prostitute. Even my name was a so called gift from him. Gem, means im worth the customers hard earned money” Gem had a sour look on her face as she explained her name. “If you were made Harith‘s caravan guard, then why not kill him in his sleep?” Andrew asked, taking another drink of nuka cola. “I thought of doing that, but the bastard was smart. He would take my weapons and lock them in his safe before bed. I would have killed him then and there. The one thing I kept from the man was my name. it was never derogatory to me. I didn’t take his explanation of it. Gem to me means im a cut above the rest.” Andrew laughed along with Gem about the description of her name. after the laugh subsided, the conversation continued. “So if youre real name is not Gem, then what is it?” Andrew asked. Gem smirked and raised an eyebrow. “If I tell you my name, you gotta promise me that you wont tell anyone. Everyone around here knows me as Gem. These are my new friends, this is my new life. Alright?” Gem challenged. Andrew shook her hand. “Alright then” she continued, “my name is Martha Crowne. Pleased to meet you.” she said, squeezing Andrew’s hand. Andrew grinned. “That‘s a really pretty name.” Andrew said. “yeah my daddy had taste.” ----------------------- Megaton was just as busy this day as it was any other time of day. Everywhere people either scurried or stayed, either way there were bodies everywhere. Some working, others standing around, some talking, some quiet. The Brass Lantern restaurant and bar was usually quiet however. So the sudden rush within its walls and outside at the bar was rather unusual, with Jenny Stahl red faced and sweating as she raced to complete orders and make sure her customers were satisfied. When Andrew and Gem walked by and saw how busy the Brass Lantern was, they stopped and stared. “Dude, shes really busy!” Gem whispered to Andrew. “You said it. Wow, I guess this will have to wait a while.” Andrew said. With that he gave a sharp whistle. Jenny looked up and placed her free hand on a shapely hip. “Andrew Ross, I am not a dog.” she said with a tight lipped smile. “just wanted to let you know, when you get off were gonna be at Gob‘s.” Andrew shouted above the din. “alright. But ill be in the mood to drink. You buyin?” Jenny asked. “yea ill buy for all of us. See ya there.” Andrew said with a goodbye wave. Gem and Andrew walked up the crater toward Gob’s Tavern. Despite the unusual cacophony outside, the inside of Gob’s Tavern was relatively quiet. All the usuals were there: Jericho, Billy Creel, Lucy West, Nova, et cetera. There were a few new arrivals sitting around the bar. Suddenly Gem shrieked loudly and ran over to the corner of the bar nearest the wall. She hugged the tall man in leather clothing and a baseball cap sitting in the bar stool happily, nearly squeezing the life out of him in her joyful embrace. “Oh my God, I have got to introduce you! Andrew, this is Crow! The guy I told you about. My old Caravan buddy!” cried Gem as she bounced up and down on her heels. Of course! Andrew knew he looked familiar but couldn’t place it. “I thought I recognized you, Crow. How are you feeling?” Andrew asked, pumping the armor salesman’s hand. “Aw, if it isn‘t the wounded traveler from the underground. I trust your travels have led you to fortune and blessing.” the mysterious Crow said with a grin. “Im still alive, so far.” Andrew said, returning the grin before calling Gob over. “Ill have a nuka cola today.” Andrew said, greeting his friend. “Wow, friend. that’s a first. Whats up?” Gob asked, fetching a cold cola. Andrew had to laugh. His head still ached, although he felt much less nauseous than earlier. “hangover” Andrew said simply. “Oh I see. Hello Gem.” Gob said, greeting his girlfriend with a hug. “Hi Gob. This is my old friend Crow.” Gem said. Gob shook his hand. Gem ordered her usual whiskey. Crow called for a beer. “Im buying guys.” Andrew said, laying 50 caps on the bar. The party was continuing into the early evening with Andrew, Crow, Gob and Gem all laughing merrily as they shared their respective tales of the wasteland with each other. “Hey guys whatre we celebrating?” Jenny Stahl asked as she approached her friends. Andrew welcomed her to anything she liked to drink. “Thanks Andy, Ill have a scotch on the rocks please, Gob.” Jenny said, smiling a greeting to Gob. She thanked him as he brought her the drink. Andrew lay 5 caps on the counter to pay for Jenny’s first drink. “Jenny, this is my old friend Crow. We used to travel caravans together.” Gem said happily. Crow stood and shook Jenny’s hand. “Hello Crow. Nice weather huh?” Jenny said with a short hug. “it seems the heavens have opened and dropped beauty itself upon me this day. This weather is indeed fine, but the night has become even better with the addition of yet another beautiful woman to our group.” Crow said. Jenny blushed and giggled before taking a chair from the corner and joined the circle of friends. “Wow, you have a way with words, huh?” Jenny said, tilting her head. “The wise man masters his language.” Crow said with a grin. “speaking of which, Crow, why is it that you talk this way?” Andrew asked, curious as he downed his third bottle of beer that night. “Crow used to be a tribal.” Gem explained with a smile, brushing Crow’s shoulder. He grinned and looked at the floor with a splash of red in his weathered cheeks. “Really. Please tell us.” Andrew said, ordering a third beer from Gob. “I was blessed with a close tribe of men and women. We basked in the glory of the land of Green, where leaves reigned in peace and brush caressed our hands in an embrace of tranquility as me and mine worshipped our Lord for the mysterious miracle of the land of trees.” Crow said before taking a drink of his beer. “I understood almost all of that.” Andrew said with a laugh and a quick drink, “but what is the land of Green?” “He means Oasis. To the North. His tribe lived around that area. In Oasis trees and green brush still grow.” Gem explained. “some of our brethren remain in the land of Green. However my tribe left as we looked upon their worship of the living tree as heresy toward the One True.” said Crow. “that makes sense, brother. So why did you become a caravaneer?” Andrew asked. Crow grinned and looked at Gem. “I met this beautiful girl and her father many years ago. I was being attacked by local wildlife and the murderous anarchists who deal in death. This girl‘s father interrupted their slaughter rescuing me from death‘s door. I rode with them for as long as I could. A shame when the great man‘s death approached him, seizing and tearing his soul away with its icy hand. A very sad day indeed.” “We were very close, the three of us.” Gem said. We were family. ------------------- The celebration had lasted well into the night, with many more stories being shared amongst the friends. Gem had gone with Crow to his caravan to say goodbye one last time. Gob was closing up shop. Andrew and Jenny were doing what they so regularly loved to do: they walked and talked. “That was some party. Gem and Crow were very close.” Jenny commented as she walked with Andrew arm in arm. “I know. Shes a great girl. I only wish her all the happiness in the world.” Andrew said. “She will tell you anything on her mind. that’s a rare gift from someone so young in the wasteland.” Jenny said, looking into the night sky. They walked silently for a few minutes before Andrew stopped and held Jenny’s hands in his own. “And what is it that YOU want to tell me?” Andrew asked. Jenny blushed, when the hell did she get so easy to read? “Wow, am I dumb or am I just that transparent?” Jenny said, shaking her head in awe. “Transparent.” Andrew answered with a tight lipped grin. “damn. I need a fuckin shady hat.” Jenny laughed. “Im waiting.” Andrew said, feigning impatience. “I would want to say to you that I find you to be an amazing person. every time you are around me you make me feel better about myself. You make me smile, worry, wonder, and laugh all in one day. You are interesting. You are masculine, muscular, sexy and smart. You have charisma that just jumps out without you even trying. I find myself drawn closer to you every time you are near. Ive had these feelings for the longest time, but I buried them myself because of the turmoil you were going through with Amata. I can say with all confidence that I am in love with you.” Jenny had begun talking animatedly, forcing herself to take a breath. Andrew didn’t respond for some time. “I really don’t know what to say,” Andrew said finally, “I didn’t know your feelings for me ran this deep. But Jenny, you would‘nt want me.” Andrew said, swinging her hands along with his. “Why is that?” Jenny asked, curious. “It isn’t a question of will. You are a great woman and God knows we are compatible. But I am addicted to sex. I love a woman‘s body. I respect every inch of skin. They are beautiful, sensual, and every part of them is special. Which is why I cant possibly comprehend why somebody would want to be gay with so many beautiful, sexy women in the world. It seriously baffles me.” Andrew said. “Youre not really making a very strong argument against yourself,” Jenny pointed out, “I love sex too. I love men, I find every inch of them appealing. And I also share your view on gayness. Why would a woman want a vag when there are so many lovely cocks in the world?” Andrew had to laugh in spite of himself. Her legendary sense of humor was coming strong once again. After he had calmed down he breathed and continued. “I don’t think you understand. I am addicted to sex, I need it.” Andrew insisted. “That’s NOT a bad thing Andrew. Im just as horny as you.” Jenny repeated. “No I mean, you wouldn’t want me. Ive slept with a lot of women since being kicked out of the vault.” Andrew explained. Jenny’s eyes widened, but she smiled. “Oh my God you horndog!” she teased, “whod you sleep with?” “well, you for one…” “greatest sex I ever had.” “Well thanks for that. Umm the first person I had sex with after being kicked out was actually Nova.” “well duh, everybody has fucked her at least once. Even I did.” “and after what you said about gayness.” “well duh. I was drunk as hell and horny and there she was. That was the one and only time I have ever or ever will sleep with a woman.” “was it good?” “nah not really. Not my thing. You can only do so much with a tongue and a finger…and a dildo.” Andrew laughed loud at that. Jenny joined him but lightly slapped his shoulder. “who else?” Jenny inquired, interested. “umm….Moira…” “again not too surprising. Shes pretty cute, if you can get past her voice and raging insanity.” “umm, Lucy West…” “Oh so that’s the reward you got for her courier mission huh? You dog. I mean shes a cute young thing…but you dog.” Jenny laughed. “Umm… lets see, who else? Gem of course and another caravan guard… Maggie…” “really? You mean 10 year old Maggie?” Jenny asked, her grin widening. “Yea. Shes gotta be the youngest willing prostitute ive ever seen.” “how did you do that? must’ve been…lets say, constricting.” “well lets just say, shes done it before.” “wow, anybody else? Amata doesn’t count.” “not off the top of my head.” Andrew said, scratching his chin. “damn, you do get around. Lucky girls. Well check it out. If you ever want to settle down, give me a call.” Jenny said. She kissed Andrew slowly on the lips before walking back to the Brass Lantern with a slow wave. He heard her laugh out loud for a moment before saying something about “Crazy boy. I love him though.” --------------------------- Andrew Ross was back in his house, sitting at his table downing his third glass of whiskey. He wasn’t trying to get drunk this time, however. Just drinking for comfort. Andrew couldn’t get over the surreal interest that Jenny had taken in Andrew’s sexual adventures. Part of him thought it was hot, but another part of him felt weird about it all. He shrugged. The talk could have gone worse, he figured. If none of the other stories didn’t chase her away, he was certain the one about Maggie would have, but that didn’t happen. She still loved him. Andrew knew she was a keeper, but truth be told he wasn’t ready to settle down just yet. Although his anger and feelings of betrayal over Amata had faded over the last three days, he found himself struggling now with a feeling of sadness. At first Andrew did not know what to make of the sudden feeling of loneliness, but the more he searched his mind, the more he knew the source of the malady. He knew only one course of action to take: the only one he had been ignoring for 4 months. He had taken jobs and quests from others, had done his own thing, had forged relationships out of what seemed thin air, been betrayed by his best friend, consoled by his real friend, been given father figure status from a beautiful 16 year old girl, and had a beautiful woman confess her love for him. Out of all these crazy mixed up plans and courses of action, the one thing he had shoved to the very deepest recesses of his mind was finding his father. James Ross. Scientist and doctor. Father and hero to what seemed a lost cause. “Son, I know you have heard your mother‘s favorite Bible passage many times through the years. But do you know what it means to her?” James Ross asked his son while the duo ate dinner at the vault diner. A cheeseburger and fries for 16 year old Andrew and a prime rib and onion rings for James. “Well the metaphorical meaning would be God telling his followers that whenever they need him to bring them new life, that he would deliver that promise.” Andrew said between bites of his burger. “That would be the biblical meaning of the verse, true. But to your mother it means something slightly different.” James said. “The waters of life, son.” he continued, “outside the door of the vault is what I assume to be a violent and hostile world with no end of trouble and dangers. But there are scattered remains of human existence outside. Your mother and I both read the reports.” “people outside? The overseer says that’s impossible. There are only monsters and mutants.” Andrew said. “there are people out there. Since our explorer teams have been out recently. They noticed human settlements. But son, as you can imagine, they are in great need.” James explained. “Clean water, right dad?” Andrew tried. James grinned. “exactly. These people were not born with purified water the way you and I were. They live off of irradiated liquid that most cannot even stomach. Imagine a gigantic water purifier that would bring clean water to the entire wasteland. That was your mothers dream.” Andrew suddenly understood what it all meant. “the waters of life.” Andrew whispered in awe. “yes. A purity project for the entire wasteland. The waters of life.” Andrew felt his eyes getting moist in remembrance of the conversation he and his father had had about project purity. He took the last swig from his glass and placed it in the sink. Andrew knew there was only one way to end his pain. Only one person would understand what he was going through, but beyond all that, there was one man he should have been looking for from the start. A man important to him, no matter how angry Andrew was at him for abandoning his son in the chaos and murderous rampage of a twisted overseer. This was still Andrew’s father. He loved him, wanted to see him safe again. He could be anywhere, dead or dying or trapped. One thing was for sure, Andrew knew. He would find his father one way or another. He would stop at nothing. Even if it killed him. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
