Faceless bodies ran past him in what almost seemed like slow motion as green slime and gasses poured from their withering forms, his own mother screamed at him to stay away her twisted form cowering in a corner, to the left they were burying the dead in red and green, to the right they all shivered and hid in fear in red and green, and behind him, he dare not look knowing what was already there in red and green. He ran as fast as he could for behind him was the twisted claws of the dead and living all red and green, red from the blood that they themselves had spilled, green from the plague that destroyed his home town and turned them into ruined monsters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hadrian Kione, a self-taught necromancer, woke with a start surrounded by green and after catching his breath from the awful nightmare, he soon remembered that it was just the tall soft grass that was swaying in the breeze. Hadrian had fallen asleep under a sakura tree somewhere in the Shing Jea Monastery, high up atop a hill and far from the eyes of anyone. Sitting up and taking deep breaths trying to calm his racing mind, he thought about where he should go, after all he spent most his life living and training in the more secluded areas of the monastery and felt it was time to move on, even more so with the increase of dirty looks the townsfolk were giving him. ****** The cemetery was quiet, not a soul willing to break it’s lonely silence, it was empty save for one man, his head was bowed his body completely still as he prayed for the family he’d lost, two years later he still felt their loss as keenly as he had the day he’d returned to his home to find them dead the building burned and their body’s defiled to fuel a mad necromancers magic. A cold wind blew through the cemetery rustling the tall grass and pulling the pink petals from the sakura trees, it carried the scent of smoke and death and pulled him from his quiet prayers, raising his head Keba Tempest, it was not the name he had been born with but he no longer used his old name it, like his old life had died with his family, walking from the cemetery he headed west, he had received a summons from the order there was a necromancer who had been seen in Shing Jea monastery that matched the description of the necromancer who had been terrorizing the local country side, a description that matched his family’s killer all too well, the assassins order wanted the necromancer dead and it was a task Keba was all too happy to carry out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shing Jea was always busy the bustle as people came and went made the area hectic and difficult to get around and even harder to find his mark, fortunately Keba had experience tracking his prey trough the monastery and a few well-placed questions and bribes lead him to a collection of steps near the main court yard. Hadrian was starting to get this uncomfortable feeling of being watched but just brushed it off as just the untrusting glances from the people wandering around here and there. He was sitting on the cold stone steps thinking about where he would go when he finally left the Monastery. He was going to have to restock on supplies soon and just the thought of having to talk to anyone was making him nervous, he really didn’t want to see the heated glares and looks of disgust from the merchants and other travelers, his hands started to shake just slightly as the thought reminded him of his nightmare, and on top of it all he was getting a headache. Brushing clawed finger tips through pure white hair and down the side of his face, feeling the silvery scars here and there Hadrian finally pushed his nerves down as he stood up and started off to buy what he could with what little money he had. After what was probably the longest and most painful shopping trip Hadrian had ever been on, hours of listing to merchants rant on how necromancers are the reason for the plague or telling him he was “bad for their business” , and having to just about pled for supplies, after all this Hadrian still wanted to go up to the old bridge and take a last look at what was , kind of, his home for the past 20 years, even though the people there were less than fond of him, he still loved the landscape and its beauty, but as soon and he paused to take a few last fleeting glances he felt that feeling again like a slow burning down his spine, he just couldn’t shake it off, so he decided it was time to leave and made his way to the gate and far away from here. As his mark paused and glanced behind him Keba ducked behind the red post at the end of the bridge, tailing his mark had taught him several things about the silver haired man, the trouble the merchants had given him when he attempted to buy supplies almost made Keba feel sorry for him, almost. He was fairly aware of his surroundings forcing Keba to duck out of sight more than once. When the necromancer shook his head and continued toward the monastery gates Keba left his hiding spot, it seemed his mark was leaving the monastery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Outside the Monastery a field of tall grass and bamboo stretched out to the foot hills of the mountain in the distance, drawing his daggers Keba prepared to carry out his mission. The faint swish of bamboo was the only warning Hadrian received before a man in deep green assassins gear and a mask leapt from the bamboo thicket, bringing up his staff Hadrian blocked the wickedly sharp daggers that were aimed for his throat, spinning away the assassin struck again and Hadrian stumbled back trying to gain enough distance to use his necromancy magic. Gritting his teeth Keba slashed out at the necromancer again irritated when his blow was blocked, the thin man was more skilled then Keba had anticipated, dodging back as the necromancer struck out with his staff Keba tensed his skin prickling as light gathered around the necromancers staff, pulling one of the thin knives from the holster on his thigh Keba threw it, the blade pierced the necromancers armor sinking into his side. Keba’s breath was knocked out of him as the magic gathered in the necromancer’s staff hit him in the chest as a ball of condensed energy, knocking him to the ground and making his world turn grey at the edges, damn it he’d worked so hard to avenge his family only to fail now, fighting the dizziness Keba groaned as his world went black. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Panting, hand clutching the wound in his side Hadrian stumbled up the hill headed toward the small cave he could just see around a clump of rocks, the musky smell of snakes and old blood didn’t dissuade him from his goal, leaning back against the cave wall Hadrian did his best to bandage his wound, the scrape of scales on stone brought his head up to find a naga slithering toward him the bizarre half human half snake creatures were horribly territorial and violent This particular naga had a long serpents tail covered in orange, red and gold scales, the tail merged up in to a human like torso, short brown hair framed an angular human face and sharp fangs peeked from his thin lips, with loud hiss the naga lunged, rolling out of the way Hadrian used his dark magic to siphoned energy from the vicious creature his wound slowly closing as the naga became weaker and weaker until with a last twitch it fell to the ground dead, focusing his energy Hadrian used the naga's body to create two bone fiends, though not as strong as his usual fiends the small headless two tailed bone creatures would serve as suitable sentries while he gained back his strength. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Blinking his eyes open Keba frowned his body ached that meant he was alive right? pushing to his feet he looked around the necromancer was gone meaning he hadn’t killed him with his dagger so why was he alive, wouldn’t the necromancer have realized if he lived he would try to kill him again after all assassins didn’t give up until they were ether told to stop by their employer or they died. Studying the ground Keba spotted the faint trail of blood leading toward the mountains. The necromancers trail lead to a cave in the mountains that ricked of nagas, peeking inside Keba caught sight of movement a little farther in, two bone creatures paced around; bird like legs attached to a dog like rib cage their twin skeletal tails swishing. Readying his daggers Keba merged with the caves darker shadows and studied the strange creatures not really sure how to kill something with no head, waiting for the bone fiends to draw close enough Keba lunged forward driving his daggers into the strangely fleshy area between the ribs and slashed up until he severed the spine, with a strange gurgle the bones collapsed, edging farther into the cave Keba spotted his mark resting against the cave wall his eyes closed moving closer Keba raised his daggers… Hadrian felt more, than heard, his beloved bone horror’s death and suddenly became more alert to his surroundings but still not daring to move for fear that he would make himself known to whoever was there, but just in case his hand gripped the handle of his staff just a little bit tighter. As Keba was just about on top of the mark his eyes caught movement seconds before the necromancer struck out with his staff, dodging Keba knocked the staff from his hands and surged forward, his lower body setting on the necromancers legs while his left hand pressed against the pale man’s thin chest his right hand held a dagger to the necromancer throat. “Don’t move” Keba hissed Pure white eyes looked up at him empty and…sad, with a weak smile Hadrian spoke softly “…oh good your alive… I would have felt bad if I had killed you” Keba was confused but wouldn’t let it show, he couldn’t let his guard down not even a second, “what?” The necromancer half way closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the cave wall exposing his neck more, “just kill me and get it over with” The assassin thought just for a moment “it can’t be this easy” looking at the thin pale throat Keba could almost see the bluish vanes beneath the skin, he pressed his dagger harder and watched as a tiny drop of blood rolled down the side of his marks neck. And yet he hesitated “…why didn’t you kill me?” The necromancer didn’t answer only stayed very still waiting for the end. Keba growled “you’ve killed countless innocent villagers why spare me!” now he was showing his emotions, showing how mad he really was, to lose his cool like that. Pale eyes widened in confusion “what are you talking about I haven’t killed any villagers” then in a whispering tone “well there was the one guy…” Hadrian confessed “but he attacked me first” he all of the sudden wasn’t sure why he was telling his to be executioner all this. Keba eased back a little though still on his guard “you didn’t attack Tsumi village?” The necromancer frowned while sitting up a bit more to look the assassin in the eyes “I haven’t been to Tsumi village in twenty years” Keba moved back confused he wasn’t sure why but he believed him but he did. Then a question popped in his head that he couldn’t help but voice, “…why?” “Why what?” Hadrian asked still confused. “Why did you want to die so easily? Even though you were or say you were innocent of these crimes you…” he stopped and looked right in the necro’s eyes “…you still want to die?” Keba finished in a bit of a sad tone. Hadrian sat up more as Keba moved off of him to give him more room, he pulled his knees up and rested his elbows on them. Closing his eyes he spoke softly “My name is Hadrian Kione, it means ‘cursed unlucky one’, and …well it doesn’t matter, I’m just better off dead” at that Hadrian reached out gently to touch Keba’s hand that still held the deadly dagger, looking up to meet the assassin’s deep brown eyes and said “if you still want to kill me that’s fine” Hadrian’s hand was cool and thin, it gave Keba the strange urge to warm the smaller man up, Keba jerked his hand back and sheathed his daggers, running a hand through his hair and he groaned “what the hell, you’re not supposed to want to die especially if you’re really innocent” Hadrian shrugged, Keba pushed to his feet, how did this happen he was supposed to be hunting a murderer instead he found a necromancer everyone seemed to think was evil but really didn’t seem interested in killing anyone, “look I don’t think you’re the necromancer that’s responsible for the mess in Tsumi but everyone seems to think you are so just stay away from Tsumi and the area around the village until I can report that they have the wrong man” Keba crossed his arms as Hadrian rose to his feet and walked to the mouth of the cave, he raised an eyebrow as Hadrian headed in the direction he’d just told him to avoid.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
