Author’s Note:
My fanfiction will differ slightly from the actual game. The primary difference will concern the Elves. As J.R.R. Tolkien was the first modern writer who included Elves in his many works, I will follow his version of Elves. Elves in this fanfiction are taller than humans and are quite beautiful and slender. It always bothers me when Elves are shown as small, short creatures because this is not how they were until Elves became associated with fairies, pixies, sprites, or Santa Claus, who has “little elves in his workshop.” Therefore, Elves will be tall. However, I will follow Dragon Age’s version that some, if not all, Elves have lost their immortality. For reference, the height of races is as follows: Humans (Males): 5’7” – 6’2”. There are a few exceptions to this range, but men taller than 6’2” is a rarity. Humans (Females): 5’4” – 5’8”. Normally, human women are shorter than their male counterparts, but it is not impossible to have tall women. Elves: 6’4” – 6’6”. Both men and women reach this height, and there has never been an Elf shorter than a human (save for childhood). Dwarves: 4’9” – 5’0”. Both men and women reach this height. Other than that main difference, my fanfiction will try to capture characters’ qualities and make them seem as they are in the game – speech patterns and physical attributes will be described to bring the characters to life. Conversations may not have the exact wording from the game, but I will try to make them as accurate as possible. Please, enjoy! Beginning Our Forever (Part I of a III-part story, for now) Chapter 1 – Change of Plans We finally made it inside Castle Redcliffe. I was still sweating and breathing heavily from our last skirmish. The outside had been swarmed with darkspawn, but I feared that was just an outlying, perhaps lost group. Scouts? I did not know. Riordan, fully armored, spoke first. “It’s a relief to see you unharmed,” he addressed me, his thick Orlesian accent unmistakable. “And you as well, Alistair… or should I say your Majesty?” Alistair’s feet shifted and he looked down. “Err… no. No, I wouldn’t say that. Not yet, anyway.” Riordan simply continued, pacing the room as he spoke: “The darkspawn that attacked Redcliffe were relatively few in number, I’m afraid. It was assumed the horde was marching in this direction… but that is not true.” Arl Eamon was also in his armor, which I had never seen before. “Riordan tells us that the bulk of the horde is, in fact, heading towards Denerim. I gulped. All those people… “They are perhaps two days away from the capital,” Arl Eamon said. “What?” Alistair asked in shock. “Are we sure about that? I mean… if that’s true…” “I ventured close enough to ‘listen in,’ as it were,” Riordan interrupted. “I am quite certain.” My heart was pounding. “Has word been sent to Denerim?” I asked in desperation. “Word has been sent,” Arl Eamon replied, “but they need more than warning. They need our armies.” “There is, I’m afraid, one other piece of news that is of even greater concern,” Riordan said. He turned his back to Alistair and me and faced the large fire. “The archdemon has shown itself. The dragon is at the head of the horde.” My jaw dropped slightly, and Alistair sucked in a deep breath and didn’t let it out. “Maker preserve us!” Bann Teagan exclaimed. Apparently, this was news to him, too. “But we can’t reach Denerim within two days, can we?” Alistair said. “It’s too far.” “We must begin a forced march to the capital immediately,” Arl Eamon replied. “Denerim must be defended at all costs.” “The archdemon is what’s important,” I reasoned. “And only the Grey Wardens can defeat the archdemon,” Riordan stated. “That is why we must go.” I scrunched my eyebrows together. “Then we march,” Alistair said, “and hope the army we’ve collected here gives us the chance we need. Arl Eamon, how long before the army can set out?” “By daybreak…” “Then let’s get them ready,” Alistair interrupted. “I won’t let all those people die without giving them a chance.” What Riordan said earlier was troubling me. “And just how are we supposed to defeat this archdemon?” “I was wondering that, myself,” Alistair said. He didn’t know, either. “Then… you don’t know?” Riordan’s face looked troubled. He sighed. “Of course not. You are both new recruits, Duncan wouldn’t have expected…” his voice trailed off. “I will give the orders at once, and will notify you the moment we are ready to march,” Arl Eamon said to Alistair. “That would be appreciated.” “Perhaps you and Alistair should meet me before you retire for the evening. There are… things we need to speak of.” Riordan was definitely distressed. “I will have someone show you to your rooms,” Arl Eamon said. “I suggest you all get some rest, while you can. We will need it.” Riordan and Alistair took off immediately and headed upstairs and left me alone in the main hall. The big, cozy fire was deceitful of the true mood of the evening. I sighed. Nothing is going as planned, I thought. As I gazed into the fire, I thought about the march tomorrow. I shrugged off the worry and turned right to the adjoining room. All my companions were there, talking amongst themselves. All except Alistair and… Morrigan? Where is she? I asked myself. I said a few words to each of my comrades and purchased some bandages and lyrium potions from Bodahn. I headed upstairs and down the hall to Riordan’s room. Alistair was outside waiting for me. “There you are, Alayna” he said. “Let’s go see what Riordan has to say.” I nodded and we walked in together. Riordan wasted no time. “You are both here. Good. You are new to the Grey Wardens, and you may not have been told how an archdemon is slain. I need to know if that is so.” “You mean there’s more to it than just, say, chopping off its head?” Alistair asked. Riordan sighed. “So it is true. Duncan had not yet told you. I had simply assumed… Tell me, have you ever wondered why the Grey Wardens are needed to defeat the darkspawn?” “I have wondered that, yes,” I answered. “The archdemon may be slain as any other darkspawn, but should any other than a Grey Warden do the slaying, it will not be enough.” Riordan paced the room. “The essence of the beat will pass through the taint to the nearest darkspawn and will be reborn anew in that body. The dragon is thus all but immortal.” Alistair and I continued to listen. “But if the archdemon is slain by a Grey Warden… its essence travels into the Grey Warden, instead.” “And… what happens to the Grey Warden?” I asked. “A darkspawn is an empty, soulless vessel, but a Grey Warden is not. The essence of the archdemon is destroyed… and so is the Grey Warden.” Alistair walked slowly towards Riordan. “Meaning… the Grey Warden who kills the archdemon… dies?” “Yes,” Riordan replied simply. “Without the archdemon, the Blight ends. It is the only way.” “Then I will take the final blow,” I said bravely. “It warms my heart to see such courage. But do not hurry to sacrifice your life so. In Blights past, when the time came the eldest of the Grey Wardens would decide which amongst them would take that final blow. If possible, the final blow should be mine to take. I am the eldest, and the taint will not spare me much longer. But if I fail, the deed falls on you. The Blight must be stopped now or it will destroy all of Fereldan before the rest of the Grey Wardens can assemble. Remember that. “But enough. There will be much do to tomorrow and little time to rest before it. I will let you return to your rooms.” “I will see you once the army is ready to march, then. I guess this all ends soon, one way or another.” Alistair’s voice nearly broke and he looked at me. “That it does, my friend, that it does.” Riordan showed us out. We looked at each other in the hall for some time. “You know that if it comes down to the two of us, I’m not letting you die, right?” Alistair’s normally joking tone was gone. I didn’t speak for a while. He continued to stare into my eyes. “Alistair,” I finally said, “you are Fereldan’s king. I am a noble without a home. I am nothing anymore. No one will miss me if I die.” “Well, no one except Wynne, Leliana, Sten, me… and you are so much more than nothing. You are my fiancé…” I beamed at the word. He smiled. “Yes, you rather like that, don’t you? But seriously, if it comes down to the two of us, I will kill the archdemon. I couldn’t live with you dead. I’d be a useless king.” I didn’t speak. After some time, he leaned down and kissed my forehead. “Good night, my love.” “Good night, Alistair.” He walked down the hall to his room while I went to mine. When I opened the door, there was a most curious sight. I found Morrigan. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
