Disclaimer: I don't own Diablo 3 or 2, it is Blizzard's. The characters are mine. I make no money from this. |
Notes: The ratings are for later chapters. This is my first attempt at actually publishing one of these.
Some might wonder so here it is.
Davin is dav-in
Valina is va-LIE-na not va-lee-na
Jessa is Jess-ah
Olcsealgaire is either olk-shal-gair (my bastardized pronunciation that seems to have stuck.) or awlk-shal-guy-reh (the sort of correct way to pronounce the two words I blended to make his name.)

The barbarian and the monk were sitting at the table in the dimly lit inn. The barbarian's armor was silver under the current coating of blood. The monk's cloth was bright yellow. They were avidly discussing the things they had fought as they ate their evening meal. The demon hunter was sitting there with them but he was not saying anything. He had his hood pulled back and his gauntlets rested on the table. Except for the red trim on his helm and gauntlets, he was this black and gold form. His gaunt face looked so very tired but also as if he just was bored. His plate in front of him was three-fourths full but he seemed very disinterested in it. The hunter would look over occasionally but really, he was not interested.
"At least he never misses." This comment made the monk laugh hard and demon hunter smirk. The barbarian's steel grey hair reflected the candlelight as his dark brown eyes studied the monk's pale face. Her pale platinum hair was a mess as if she had not worn a helm while in battle. The barbarian's bulk made her look short and small. The hunter was gaunt looking in the face with his pale skin framed by his messy black wavy hair. His black eyes dancing constantly even though he seemed disinterested in what they were discussing.
"I know because ouch." Her voice was in the lower female register close to an alto. "I see what his arrows do to the demons."
The door opened letting the rain into the inn a moment and what was obviously a wizard by the cloth armor she wore. She had spent time on it since it was all this aquamarine blue. She eyeballed the three at the table carefully. Her gaze fell on the hunter and stayed there. She sauntered over to the table and dropped herself in the chair next to the hunter.
The barbarian laughed when she sat down.
"What are you laughing at?" Her voice was almost shrill and was definitely loud.
"He bites." The monk chimed in laughing.
Olcsealgaire just glared at the two of them, scooted his chair away, rose, and walked away. He headed towards the stairs walking quietly which was amusing considering how tall and big boned he was.
"Am I interrupting or would you mind having a caster to join you…three?"
The barbarian's face lit up at her question. "You wouldn't mind doing that?" The monk's face was eager as well.
"No as long are your…"friend" does not object."
"Don't mind him; he's very good at what he does."
"He looks so exhausted, poor thing you keep him that busy?" Her voice showed concern.
"I do not think he sleeps. I have no idea why and it’s not my place to ask." The mage eyed the unfinished plate.
"Seems he does not eat either." She sighed. "Excuse me a moment." She sauntered over to the bartender, had a brief conversation and walked back to the table. She sat quietly peeling her gauntlets off.
"I have tried; he avoids it for some reason." The monk was frowning as she said this. Her cyan blue eyes were frowning as well.
"Will he be back to join us again?" She asked calmly as the innkeeper brought her plate of food.
"I doubt it. The silliest things seem to piss him off the most." He said this as a truth.
The monk stuck out her hand, "I am Valina, and this is Davin.” The mage took her offered hand and shook with the barbarian as well.
"I am Jessa, wizard extraordinaire." She smiled brightly her pale features glowing with the arcane power she bore. Her pale sea green eyes danced around as she started in on her food. "I am sorry I am famished."
Davin chuckled his midrange voice filling the room. "It's alright. Take your time. Did you see many of the risen on your way in?"
She wiped her face. "Too many, are you sure it is not going to be a problem with him with me being here?"
"Like I said he bites but for the most part he's harmless unless you are on the receiving end of those arrows of his, then I would want to run. As long as you can hold your own, that is what matters. I just think there is too much going on in that head of his. It will be nice having four."
"Did you have four before?" She was eating at a decent pace.
"No, for a bit it was just us but then he was sitting here one night and she got the nerve to ask him to join us. He did not object."
"That is good. So you three have your coordination down then?"
"Usually, however he is just damn good at using his skills and surviving. Since, from what little I know, wizards work at range you will probably be near him or at the opposite side supporting Davin or me."
Jessa nodded. She had a faraway look in her eyes like she was thinking about something. "So does he have a name?"
Valina laughed hard. "He does but it’s too long so we don't ever use it." Jessa frowned hard.
"That's not very nice."
"He is used to it." Davin noted quietly as he yawned.
"Still it’s not nice." She sighed finishing her plate and looking at the hunter's plate and frowning. He had barely touched what was there. "So what is the usual approach?"
"We usually rise two to three hours after sunrise. He will be awake sooner probably as he usually is ready to start before we have even gotten out of bed. So mid-morning we will be heading to the cathedral.
Davin rose and headed upstairs. "Goodnight you two. If you have more questions she cannot answer just ask me in the morning."
"Goodnight Davin." Valina said.
"Goodnight." Jessa said quietly.
"So what is his name?" Jessa insisted on knowing.
"I really do not remember because no one calls him that. Why does it matter?"
"Because I would find it downright rude if people did not address me by my name or by how I choose to be addressed. Is he always that touchy?"
"Yes but it gets worse when he has not slept at all or has been injured or if something during the day annoys him." She did not see why it was so important.
"Does this place have a bath?"
"Yeah but I am sure he's in it right now." She laughed.
"I will not complain except I want use of it soon. Why is it funny?"
"I think it is because he is the first male I have met that is as picky as he is about having a bath."
"I will certainly not complain. I am that way too."
"Yes but you are a woman. I will wait for you to get done."
"Do you guys share a room or what?"
Valina could only laugh hard. "You really think he would share? Although when we cannot make it back we do share but like this no we each have our own."
"I do not know. I have never been near a demon hunter before. For some reason I have never fought the evils with one. Davin said he is good at what he does, is this true?" Her voice drifted off as she thought about the black clad man whom she had barely seen for two minutes.
"Yes it is very true, he is very smart about his surroundings, our abilities and what he is capable of at times makes me wish I was that good." She smiled as she said this.
Jessa smiled at this thought. "I am right you and Davin are fully trained?"
"Yes we are."
"So if you are fighting and need his help what do you do to get his attention?"
"Most times we do not have to because he tends to pay attention that well even if there is more than one group going. It is like he has eyes in the back of his head sometimes. If we require his attention, it is usually just "hunter" that we refer to him as. Your name is simple and easy so you do not have to worry about my messing it up except maybe tomorrow. Davin will forget so do not be surprised."
"I am going to find out what his name is, that is so mean." She sighed pushing her empty plate away.
"So...how much have you done together?"
"Davin and I just cleared the road, he was in here that night, so he joined us and we made it to the cathedral but have not found the old man yet."
"That is good at least you know how each other works. I just hope I can add to this." To Valina's surprise, Olcsealgaire came down the stairs. He had obviously been in the bath as his hair was a dripping mess on his back. He was also not dressed in any of his armor just a plain black shirt and pants that did not seem worn at all. Since they fit him, it was easy to see how thin he truly was. He had not bothered to shave the 4 days of growth from his face however. The white scar that dominated his right cheek seemed more visible now. He walked over Valina.
"You usually want to know when I am done so…" His bass-baritone voice was very quiet as he spoke. He did not even look at the wizard.
Valina did not say anything just nodded her head at him. He turned and headed back up the stairs. Jessa had to keep looking down so she was not staring while he was standing there.
"Dang he is tall." Jessa almost whispered as he ascended the stairs soundlessly. Valina laughed hard.
"I know I feel like a midget with him and Davin around."
"I am used to being able to look a man in the eyes but damn with him I will not be able to." She smiled thinking about something; she had a smirk on her face as she sat there.
"You first or me?" Valina asked her.
"You first, I think I am going to have seconds." Valina laughed hard.
"Next time you won't have to pay for seconds." She pointed at the unfinished plate, "that is pretty normal so there will be plenty around."
"I could not do that; I would have no energy at all to cast anything."
"I know what you mean, I do not know how he does it because he moves so much when he is fighting. He does not stand still most of the time." She sighed and pushed her chair back from the table.
"I know I am the one that just stands around. Which rooms are you guys in?"
"Davin's and mine are on the right side as you go up the stairs on the right side of the hallway. His is on the left side of the hallway, so pick something there if you want to be close. I am going to go bathe and I will come get you so you can too." She started towards the stairs.
"Thank you. I am going to eat some more and just relax a bit." She watched the monk walk away and got up getting more food before she sat down again thinking about the one without a name. He was so different and seemed so far away.
Valina came back down about twenty minutes later.
"Your turn." She mused looking away not wanting to stare.
"That is good." She yawned. "Excuse me." Valina chuckled softly.
"It is late. That is understandable. “She smiled at the wizard admiring her curvy well proportioned body. Jessa rose and followed the monk upstairs after grabbing her gauntlets off the table. "In here." She opened the door to the bathing room.
"Thank you. Goodnight."
"Goodnight." She walked out and closed the door quietly heading to her own room for the night.
Jessa spent some time in the washroom having not had a bath in a couple days. Her long red-blonde hair needed tending to. She wished she had asked the monk to help her with it but dang she was so tired. She was standing there putting her red silk sleeping gown on when there was a quiet tap at the door.
"Give me a minute." She was trying to be quiet but her high soprano voice did not know how to be.
Olcsealgaire waited patiently even though he was annoyed at having to wait he had forgotten about the wizard and figured that was who owned that voice. Jessa quickly threw her gown on and put a towel on her shoulder for her hair to rest on.
She cracked the door open and was surprised that he had not bothered to do anything with his hair. He still looked the mess he was when he had been downstairs earlier.
"I am sorry I was in here so long." She looked up at him, taking in his haggard face. She hated how worn down he looked.
"It is fine." His voice was almost a whisper as he stood there. "Just let me know when you are done." He did not seem to react to her appearance, his face a mask of brooding fatigue. He turned and headed towards his room. She waited to close the door until she saw which one was his.
"Jessa stop it." She whispered to herself, but how could she ignore the way he looked, so broken, so tired. Her instinct was trying to take over while her mind told her to leave him be. She toweled her hair a bit but knowing he wanted in the room she gathered up her things, tossed them in her bag, and left the room how she had found it. She padded to his door and tapped quietly. She did not hear any movement at all when she did. She tapped a tiny bit louder and still got no response. She tried and was able to open the door. He was sitting in the chair in the room. His long legs stretched out in front of him. He was asleep his head resting on his right shoulder, his bows were on the floor within reach. He did not move when she entered and closed the door quietly. She shook her head at his sleeping form. His armor was on the other chair a bloody mess still from the day’s adventures. She stood there a moment trying to decide if she should wake him or not. The bed looked like he had not even sat on it. She tiptoed around him and pulled the coverlet back on the side he was sitting on. She stood on one side of him and gently touched his unscarred cheek. "Hey." She spoke quietly not wanting to startle him.
Olcsealgaire's eyes popped open when she touched him. He looked at her raising his head. "You did not have to wake me, but thank you." He stood up slowly; he was obviously stiff from sitting there.
"I just figured since you had wanted the washroom, besides sleeping like you were is not good for you." She smiled at him as she studied his face. Close up it was easy to see the scar that marred his right cheek but more so the grey pallor he had to his skin.
"I am fine." He snapped as he snatched his very beat up bag from the bedtable and walked out of the room. He did not bother closing the door; she heard the door to the washroom open and close. She walked over to where his armor lay on the chair, trying to discern if the blood was his or some creature's that no longer marred their world. She moved back and sat in the chair.
He came back about ten minutes later. He looked the same so she had no idea why he needed the washroom.
"Did you need something?" He sounded annoyed, like she should not have been there when he came back.
Jessa frowned inside but outside her face held no emotion. "I do not think you would like my answer to that." She was looking up at him when she spoke.
"Why? I am sure I have heard whatever it might be before." He sighed hard. "Can you move please?" He seemed very annoyed but it was hard to tell with what.
"Need is a subjective thing you know…" She grinned at him. "Why do you want me to move when you should be in bed?"
The glare he gave her was just evil. "I do not use the bed, you want it? I did not think all the rooms were full." He did not really look at her. He set the bag back on the bedtable. Jessa was trying so hard in her mind to figure out what was going on behind those black orbs of his.
"The rooms are not full, I was not thinking of invading your space, and may I ask why you do not lay down?" She looked at him the worry on her face.
"It’s too uncomfortable and I do not sleep as well if I do." He said this as fact and nothing more.
She stood up moving closer to him. She felt so damn short which never happened to her. "Maybe you should try just for one night?" She was looking up at him worry on her pale face; her full mouth was pursed in worry as she awaited his reply.
He sighed hard. "Why?" He moved so he was sitting in the chair, he sat down hard, shifted around a little and did not look at her.
"Because you rested is what I need." She was smiling even though he was not looking at her.
"Why does that matter to you?" He turned to look at her. It was hard to read his eyes since he only had them half open and the long curled lashes hid them quite well in the moonlight.
"Well I do not like having a partner who is half asleep while I am trying to kill the evil that lurks in our world. Besides you just look like you could use a real sleep." Inside she sighed. Outside she was studying him from under her eyelids. He was so well built in her mind even if he was too thin.
"I will not be half asleep when we go out tomorrow." He shifted again; his hair was still wet on his head as he sat there half asleep already. Jessa moved so she was behind him. That close up she could see how much he had neglected his hair. She just shook her head not understanding since it was so long and not straight the way hers was. She set her bag on the bed and dug in it a moment.
"May I ask you something?" He did not jump when she spoke.
"What?" He was getting more annoyed and it showed in his tone. She reached for his hair with her fingers even though she had her comb in the other hand.
"Two things really, what am I supposed to call you? And would you get mad if I did something with this?" She touched his head very gently not wanting to startle him or worse upset him more than what he seemed to be.
"Whatever you want." He sighed. "I will not get mad; I just do not see why you should bother." He rested his head on his right hand. He was so tired. His hair was such a mess she knew it would take her awhile.
She bent so she was whispering in his ear. "You should lay down and whatever I want is not an answer since I do not really know you." She stood back up and was trying to undo the mess that his hair was.
He sighed hard. "Why are you so insistive that I lay down?" He was clearly annoyed now. "Olcsealgaire." He said it very quietly like it did not matter.
"Because you need to sleep properly and it is obvious you have not." Her tone showed her own annoyance. "That is hard? I think not. People must be just that lazy. I am Jessa." She made no move to offer her hand as she was trying to deal with his hair. He moved without warning standing over her.
"Jessa just…" He finally looked at her and took in her paleness; her hair was a mess of its own on her shoulder. The red silk just accented her pink cheeks and unpainted pink lips. He sat on the bed realizing that there was going to be no winning this argument. He twisted himself so he was laying on his stomach and using his right arm as the pillow. She realized at that point, why he did not bother with the bed since he did not fit in it. She sat down next to him. She dug in her bag quickly and tied his hair at his nape. She wanted him to sleep his hair could wait.
"Just what?" She asked him softly wishing he was asleep already and would not answer.
Olcsealgaire did not turn to look at her. "Nothing." He sighed but did not seem to relax. She put her bag in the chair quietly. She tied her own hair up quickly. She moved so she was in a better position but still sitting on the bed next to him. She reached and moved his hair so she could touch his neck. Her hands were very soft against his smooth skin. The muscles under that skin however were a knotted mess; he seemed very taut as well. She frowned but knew because of how she was sitting he would not see her face. "Why?" He was so out of it and sounded it.
"Because you need it." She had both hands on him now. She had to make sure he did not see her now, as she moved her hands down his back it was easy to feel how thin he was. It took her about twenty minutes before he finally relaxed under her hands. "Damn you are going to sleep all day if I have my way." She moved since there was more room on the other side of the bed. She covered him up as best she could before she laid next to him on top of the coverlet; she was not going to wake him just for that, besides her hands hurt now. "Goodnight Olcsealgaire." She whispered to his almost still form liking the way his name sounded on her lips. It did not take her long before she was out too.
