Dante and Nero went on a mission. Hilarity and Dante's mean, perverted streak ensues. Light bromance.
“Urrgh…”
“You okay, kid?” He decided to peek.
“It’s friggin’ hot down here,” came another aggravated voice.
“I can see that. You’re sweating like a pig.” His companion shot him a dirty glare. Dante felt a smirk touched his lips. “Well, if you let me ram in, we’d be done by now.” An annoyed growl came as a respond.
“Sorry to tell you this breaking news, Dante, but you’re fat.”
Dante chuckled. “Aw, the kid can’t handle a bigger partner.” He grinned widely, “Don’t worry, I’ll fatten you up later.”
Nero rolled his eyes. “Shut up and get lower.”
Dante sighed with exaggerated weariness as he complied, “Hurry up, kid. Despite having incredible stamina, I prefer not doing this all day.”
“Urgh…almost…there! Got it!” Nero let out a triumphant cry as he clutched Blue Rose. “Let’s go.”
“Finally!” Dante planted his heels into the cracked concrete and rolled his shoulders until he heard a satisfying crack from the joints. He adjusted his grip on Nero's wrist and effortlessly pulled the kid out of the tight hole. It was supposed to be an easy job; hunting a group of lower demon that infested an old cereal factory across town. Dante had imagined if the demons were any brighter, he would stumble across ‘Hell Coco Flakes’ in a nearby mall. Who knew? Maybe he could get some for Trish back at the office. Then Nero managed to have his gun knocked into a fissure on the floor, which in turn, led to the old basement. Dante swore he needed to talk to the kid about having his eyes opened at all times during battles. Luckily the gun didn't fall too deep, stuck between the old pipes and wiring on the ceiling. Nero refused to jump into the hole or let him jump into the hole to retrieve the two-barrel gun, afraid it would get knocked even deeper into the dark, underground crevice. So they opted to spend hours trying to retrieve it with the red-clad devil hunter acted as a holding ground while the Nero held on him as he retrieved his beloved Blue Rose with his glowing limb - which provided Dante a little amusement about how useful it was for situations like that.
“Ughh…I smell like shit.” He glanced at the said kid when he heard the comment. Nero pushed his damp hair off his clammy forehead before groaning in disgust when he caught strings of sticky, green slime on his fingers.
“Yeah, you look like shit too.” Dante did nothing good to help but annoy the younger hunter. “C’mon, let’s get cleaned up back at the hotel.” Nero nodded his agreement and followed the older hunter out of the factory.
The sky had a tinge of orange in it; they had been hunting the whole day and the nearest hotel they could check in was in a neighbouring town thirty miles from the abandoned industrial district. Normally, Dante was fine with working alone but since there had been too many hunts going around and the ladies were busy handling other cases, he was stuck with Nero. The kid arrived at the office sometime earlier and decided that he was bored enough to tag along Dante on his mission. Dante wasn't all too happy about it at first; though he decided to vouch against his first decision when Nero displayed his skills of being a source of amusement during their travel. Since Dante was used to handle jobs alone, they had to travel by Dante's beloved bike. Trish had generously offered Nero to use hers but Dante wisely warned the kid not to trust the blonde's sly smirk. He had his ass worked out of him after he did as much as dented her machine.
After making sure Rebellion was clean enough, Dante swung his leg over his beloved bike. Amber light bounced on the polished rims; proof of his doting care.
"I thought you said I could drive it."
"When you've earned it, kid. Now hop on daddy's machine, biker chick." Dante flashed him a dashing grin, enjoying the annoyed look on the younger hunter's face at his cocky attitude.
"Next time remind me to borrow someone else's bike if I follow you on a mission." Nero climbed on the bike behind the older man carefully, mindful of Rebellion's sharp edges. He glared contemplatively at the skull etched on the dark blade, frozen in its silent scream. It had gotten friendly with his forehead way too many times thanks to Dante’s reckless driving. He had a feeling Dante was doing it on purpose.
“Whose? Trish’s?” Dante looked over his shoulder in amusement, “Only if you want your balls in a twist, kid. And don’t even think about asking Lady; she’ll ask for compensation long before you even get to look at her gears.” He kicked off the stand and started the bike; finding the rough hum of the engine to be quite soothing. “Don’t worry, you’ll get your own soon if you do good in this business.”
Nero huffed, sliding his arms around Dante’s torso as he prepared for the usual sudden lunge every time the older man started moving. “How much did you get paid for this anyway?”
“Enough zeros to get my business another branch.” Dante shrugged, listening to the engine’s loud purr when he twisted the handles, “If Lady doesn’t claim half of it for whatever debt I owe her. And I still have bills to pay.” The bike gave a violent jolt before it sped down the road. He heard Nero groaned against his back and an arm left his waist. “Bumped your head against Reb again? It’ll leave a print.”
“Nice to know you care!” Nero shouted sarcastically on top of the howling wind. The streets were empty thanks to the infestation that drove every soul out of the town. Now it looked like a ghost town with damaged vehicles and abandoned properties littering the streets. For a while Nero was reminded of how Fortuna looked like after the Saviour incident not too long ago. It hadn’t been two years yet but the castle town had recuperated to almost its original state. Most of it was because of Kyrie; she was like an idol to everyone there and under her caring guidance combined with his newfound strength, they managed to restore their lives back even if it was a slow process. Kyrie was patient with everyone and Nero remembered how she calmed him when he came back home disgruntled about the number of demons that kept popping out into the outskirts. He managed to destroy Agnus’s secret lab but a few of the scientist’s creation leaked out and caused quite a stir for a while. He had a feeling some of them managed to sneak out of the city into another region. That was why he decided to contact Dante about it. He left Fortuna after he managed to establish a group of warriors specialized in demon hunting to look after things in the city while he wasn’t around.
He had worked with Dante for a while now. Nero was grateful that the veteran devil hunter was more than happy to share his demon-slaying knowledge with him. But that didn’t mean that he enjoyed being Dante’s personal source of amusement during their missions.
Not one bit.
The journey to their temporary residence was fortunately short even though the neighbouring town was more than forty miles away. Something Nero wanted to thank Dante’s rowdy way of riding his ‘Road Killer’. Honestly, can’t the guy think of anything more stylish than a name for a bike that resembled ‘road kill’? It was like an omen.
By the time they swerved into the front of the cheap motel, Nero found that he had to peel himself off Dante’s back because the slime had dried up and hardened between them like glue.
“Didn’t know you love me this much, kid.” Dante laughed as he carefully wove himself out of Nero’s grip. He had turned the engine off so he could clearly hear the wet rips when he pried himself off the younger hunter. “Aw, look at what you did to my coat. And bike.”
Nero scoffed, trying his best to rub the hardened slime off his clothes and arms, “Don’t act coy, I bet you enjoyed it. Besides, it’s not like your bike hadn’t has juices coating its seat before.” He smirked triumphantly when Dante stared at him in shock before bursting into a merry laughter.
“Getting better, kid.” The older hunter rubbed the prick of tears from his eyes once his amusement subdued. He dug into his pant pocket and threw a set of keys towards Nero, which the younger hunter deftly caught. “Go on ahead. I’m gonna clean up the ride first.” Dante watched Nero disappeared behind the creaky double doors of the motel lobby before turning to tend to his machine.
Nothing felt better than having clean water washing down what’s worth of a hard day’s work. Nero rubbed his face under the warm shower before lifting his head to face the pouring droplets, sighing in content as he relaxed his limb. He was grateful that even when the motel was a bit run-down, the bathroom was well-maintained. He turned the shower off and dried himself before slipping into a cleaner blue jeans and a dusty grey long-sleeved shirt. Stepping out of the bathroom while still drying his hair, Nero found Dante was already sprawled over the room’s only couch; his trench coat was thrown carelessly on the floor, leaving him in only his shirt and pants.
Nero let out a tired sigh before he picked the red leather coat – not without cringing at the stain covering it - and threw it over the couch’s back. He remembered he almost fell when his legs caught up in the leather coat left lying around the floor. Complete with a few sets of belts too, at times. He had – as much as Nero didn’t want to use that term – nagged Dante about his tendency of making a mess but the older hunter just waved him off. Nero didn’t think that he was a neat freak; but he at least had the mind to keep his belongings where they wouldn’t hamper with his movements. Thankfully Dante had the thought to put his weapons away decently, the younger hunter mused. That guy had priority issues.
“Hey Dante, aren’t you gonna wash up?” He sat on his single bed, pulling the towel off his head and running his claw through his now damp hair. “I’m thinking about heading out for food in a while, you coming?” When the older man didn’t respond, Nero stood up and carefully peered over the sprawled form.
Dante had his head tilted to one side; eyes obscured by his white bangs. One hand draped over his stomach, another dangled over the edge of the couch. His booted legs were crossed over the couch’s armrest; it was a pretty small couch after all.
Nero stared at the older hunter in disbelief; how could he fall asleep while stinking of the day’s filth?
After he regained control of his jaw, Nero waved a hand over Dante’s face as if to test him. “Dante?” Nope, he’s dead for the world. He didn’t even as much as twitch in his sleep. If Nero didn’t see the subtle rise and fall of his chest, he’d officially declare the older devil hunter as dead. Dante didn’t snore in his sleep, thankfully, but he’d sleep like a log and sometimes didn’t move at all the whole night. To make matters worse, since the red-clad devil hunter could sleep through a nuclear war, it was hell to wake him up in the mornings. Nero usually opted to let him wake up by himself after learning about Dante’s impossibly obstinate routine and habit. Knowing that, Nero frowned slightly. Was he going to let Dante sleep on the couch the whole night? It wouldn’t be good for his back and mood tomorrow morning. He’d sooner face goofy Dante any day than cranky Dante; the last time they spent the day bickering and throttling each other for the simplest argument had left him sore for months.
“Hey, wake up. You need to take a shower.” Nero poked the older hunter’s cheek tentatively with his demonic claw. When no response was given, he tried to hover the glowing limb over the closed eyes, hoping the light would stir him awake. Nope, not happening with Dante. It did cast a blue glow over his face and reminded Nero of those cheap lightings in ghost films though.
He could try punching him, but that was a sure way to have a cranky Dante to deal with.
Before Nero was prepared to give Dante a shake that would match a 7 ritcher scale earthquake, a distinctive rock music blared into the stillness and made Nero jump in alarm, head tossed around to find the source of it. Snapping his head towards the coffee table, he spotted a blinking device sliding on the smooth surface as it vibrated alongside the noise. Nero snatched the mobile and contemplated about taking the call before he saw the caller’s ID.
The office.
An evil plan popped into his head. Nero glanced at the dead log in front of him. Allowing a sly smirk to creep on his face, Nero cleared his throat and answered the call with his best imitation of Dante’s voice. “Hey, babe. Miss me already? Too bad you’re not here, I’d introduce you to Alice and Jane here; they’re feisty.” He added a breathy chuckle to make it more effective; he tried to imagine the look on Trish’s face and what she would do to Dante when they return to the office.
“…Nero?”
Nero almost dropped the phone when he heard the meek voice. “K-Kyrie?” He choked; face paling when he realized what it could have implied.
“Kyrie, wait! I can explain!” He strained his ear to listen into the phone, hoping the girl wouldn’t hang up on him. He felt like an ass. Nero looked around wildly to think of how to explain the situation when he noticed Dante was now curled facing the back of the couch, his shoulders shook. His jaw dropped; so Dante was faking his sleep! “YOU ASSHOLE!!” Momentarily forgetting about the call, he pounced on the older devil hunter with a war cry, dead set on giving Dante a few good punches that would numb his brain for centuries to come.
“Oof! Hey, watch it!”
Despite Nero was straddling his waist with murder in his eyes and Devil Bringer poised to kill, Dante kept on laughing his ass off and made no move to push the kid off him. “Thought you could lay a stink on the real master, eh?” Honestly, he was asleep until he heard his mobile rang. He was a light sleeper truthfully, only he always took his time to get up and often pretended to be asleep to prolong his time in bed. He had kept his eyes closed and felt Nero’s eyes on him before answering the call. He couldn’t stop himself from grinning at Nero’s (rather admirable) imitation of his voice and when the kid was busted, he had quickly rolled to his side in hopes to keep quiet.
“You sly bastard! You ass!” Dante held his hands up to protect his face from the younger man’s assault as his humour ebbed. Nero’s face was flushed red – either from embarrassment or anger, he wasn’t really sure, but it was an interesting view. “You were planning it all along, weren’t you!?”
“What? I didn’t ask your girlfriend to call my cell,” finally Dante reasoned out to defend himself. “Besides, you have your own phone, why didn’t she call you if she wants to talk to you?” He grinned victoriously when Nero stopped his attacks as if agreeing to his reason. “Now gimme back my phone, if you don’t mind.” Before Nero could react, Dante snatched the mobile from his hand and held it to his ear. “Daddy’s here.”
“You two were at it again, I hear.” It was Trish on the line this time. He wondered if Kyrie had told her about what she heard.
Dante grinned, glancing at the kid over him before he sighed dramatically, “Well, you know how active kids are.” He avoided a grudging swing from the glowing claw before he added in a slightly more serious tone, “Is the little princess okay?”
“She was surprised, but when she heard Nero screaming and you were laughing like a lunatic, she pretty much figured it out.” Dante heard a soft sigh on the line. “How was the mission, by the way?”
Dante shifted to lie more comfortably on the couch with an arm tucked under his head, “You know me; the mission was a piece of cake. Today we nabbed the last spot so probably we’ll be heading back tomorrow.” He saw Nero’s concerned face in front of him. “Oh yeah, why did the kid’s chick call my phone?” He mocked a surprised gasp, “Could it be that she’s starting an affair with the big daddy? Is the kid not enough for her girly needs?” Dante chuckled when Nero shot him a dirty glare and jabbed him roughly on his chest. It was so easy to tease the kid.
Trish snorted in amusement, “Your head will burst one day if you keep inflating it with your ridiculous ego. No, Kyrie tried to call Nero at first, but the kid was out of reach so she came to the office to call you, since she doesn’t have your number.”
“Ah,” Dante nodded absentmindedly before he looked at Nero. “I’ll tell the kid to recharge his phone so my line won’t get abused should Juliet wants to talk to her Romeo.” He smirked at Nero’s apparent scowl before he went back to Trish, “So where’s the little princess? Lover boy here is dying to talk to her.”
“Right here. Make sure you make things clear to her first, Dante.”
Despite it wasn’t entirely his fault to begin with, he shrugged it off, “Yeah, yeah.” He heard the receiver changed hands and a muffled conversation between the two women before a timid voice spoke at the end of the line.
“Um…hello?”
“Well, hello there, princess! Haven’t heard from you for a while; your boyfriend sure knows how to protect his goods.” He could picture the girl’s blushing face at the claim. Upon realizing Kyrie was on the line, Nero tried to tear the phone from him. Dante ducked and avoided the kid’s hands as best as he could with the younger hunter pinning him down on the small couch. He wagged a warning finger at Nero as if to say ‘Play nice, I’m helping to clean up your mess here’ before speaking into the phone. “Well, Kyrie, about just now, Nero’s just kidding. You know he doesn’t really have the balls to play grownup’s games-ow!” He frowned at Nero and rubbed his head but the younger hunter merely leered at him. “So you don’t have to worry about Nero turning to some ugly chick.”
A nervous yet sincere laugh. “It’s alright. I…um…heard what happened but thank you, Dante.” There was a slight shuffle in the line as if the girl was fiddling with the phone cord…or something. “Where is Nero?”
“Nero?” Dante glanced at the said kid before he grinned, “Oh, he’s on top of me.” He revelled the moment as the statement caused Nero to gape at him in disbelief. “He kept trying to pin me down. Sorry doll, but I think maybe he’s into guys-”
“DANTE!!”
He laughed and didn’t fight as Nero snatched the phone and jumped off him in abject horror. Did he mention the kid was so easy to tease? He pushed himself up and stretched; noting the kid hopped out of the room with the phone practically glued to his ear. Dante rolled his eyes; as if he wanted to eavesdrop on them. Ugh, couples. He undid his shirt and threw it carelessly over the couch before snatching a clean towel from the towel rack. A nice cold shower sounded like a heavenly idea.

Those from my website are aware how old this story is. In fact I was planning a sequel for this with the same light bro-feel between the two. I just can't find the mood to finish the few paragraphs....yet.
