Author's note: My first submission to AFF! Panornia would be proud. The protagonists in this story are created characters in the World of Warcraft MMORPG; if you play, feel free to jump on Uldum-US and say, "hi" (the secret word is "Titanic"). I am working (slowly) on transcribing the in-game roleplay for these toons, so WIP is the operative phrase, here. I encourage critiques; if you have the inclination to make suggestions, please leave them in the reviews or message me with more detailed analyses. I hope you enjoy reading the interactions between these two as much as I enjoyed playing them out.
"Zul's Blood," muttered the troll. "Just make ya move, ya pretty boy. Don' let her ignore ya."
Tak had been lounging upon a pile of luxurious cushions on the ground floor of the Fairbreeze Inn for the past half hour, smoking some sweet and awful elven concoction from a waterpipe and watching the goods vendor just outside the doorway make calf-eyes and sigh at the haughty lady standing not ten feet from him. Every elf that had come and went had either ignored her or acted as if she were a particularly disgusting stain on the cushions. Tak thought, with bitter amusement, that to them she might as well be a stray Scourge that had wandered in and that nobody had noticed until the rot had begun to smell.
"Might you be Mi'thak?" came a soft voice behind her.
"Aye, I be. Who be askin'?" she replied off-handedly.
"Oh, good," the voice sighed in relief. "Your hair and complexion are the same as your brother's, and I've never seen any other trollkind with brown skin. I am Arauka! Your brother sent me to quest with you. He said it would be good for my life experience."
Tak cracked a smile and turned her head to acknowledge the voice's owner, and her eyes met the green ones of a sin'dorei, the only place on him other than his fingers not wrapped in dark leather. An elf was speaking to her like an equal addresses another, contrary to the attitude of the rest of his people. Tak raised her eyebrows and looked him once-over. The dark shapely armor managed to, rather than cover up his physique, enhance its musculature, and this elf was very well-formed for his kind. Arauka was examining Tak with the same level of interest. She preened, smoothing her short, spiky wefts of vermillion hair, and rose to fully face him.
"We be a rare kind, me an' meh bruddah," she agreed. "I be simply 'Tak'." Her eyes lingered on his sturdy legs and corded middle. "Ya be fit, elf. Not willowy an' lookin' like I could knock ya down by breathin' in ya direction." Arauka's eyes smiled at her compliment.
"Thanks!" He stuck a pose, flattered by her attention. He was happy to be looked at as a man and not called "pretty pretty princess" or some female's name that shared his name's beginning vowel sound; Erika had been Jez'ran's favorite, much to Arauka's dismay - it had been just similar enough to the correct pronunciation for Jez'ran to excuse it as impediment by his accent. "I hope we have a good time traveling together." Tak grinned, showing a mouthful of teeth framed two barely-protruding, dark grey tusks that were small even for a female troll.
"Oh, we will. I'll be takin' good care a ya. Bettah dan meh bruddah, I'm thinkin'." She fluttered her lashes coquettishly.
"I'm excited to face enemies other than those dreadful quillboar," he said, grinning at her behind his mask.
"Oh, dere be an undead problem fa sure," Tak replied.
"Great! I've been waiting to see such creatures." Arauka glanced off into the distance as if he might see some running up on them any moment.
"De last elf I been questin' with, he wouldn't 'a known fun if it tied him up ta a chair in front a one a dem fancy couches and asked him to draw her 'like one a his elf girls'," Tak spat, thinking back with disgust to earlier in the day at her failed attempt in doing exactly such; Kaimelar had panicked and bled from his nose all over his robes before knocking his chair to the floor and trying to slither away. She grumbled something incoherent in the Sandfury tongue. Arauka looked thoughtful.
"Well, if fun does tie me up," he said simply, "I hope it likes abstract. I'm a terrible artist." Tak giggled in response. "So, ready to go have some life experiences?"
"Well, dat depends on what kind a experiences ya wanna have." Tak gestured along the road leading from Fairbreeze. "Dere by dat way, south to the Ghostlands - experiences killin' de Scourge. And then there's..." she trailed off, tilting her head back and raising her gaze to the upper floor of the inn. She glanced at him sidelong, running her tongue over her tusks.
"If you don't mind terribly," he replied obliviously, "can we go to the Ghostlands kill some things? I'm excited to finally see this place for the first time."
Tak sighed inwardly and adjusted the shoulder straps of her pack.
"Let's go, den, elf."
--
The pair of them sat on a rock where the Elrondil River poured in a short waterfall to the ocean at the coast, taking a break from dealing with overlarge bats and gigantic poisonous spiders, and eyeing the scourged Murlocs that trawled the sands.
"Have you ever caught one of those?" Arauka asked, pointing to indicate the tiny spirit crabs that scuttled almost unseen against the indigo silt. "They make excellent pets, I hear."
"I never be seein' one afore now," Tak replied, shaking her head. Her cyan eyes followed one of the skittering phantoms.
Arauka stood and stretched. Tak looked over and ran her gaze upward from his booted feet up his legs to his chest. She smiled appreciatively.
"It be nice ta look up at ya, elf," she said. Ara smiled down at her.
"Thanks!" Arauka said brightly. "I don't get to be taller very often."
Tak got to her feet, but stood further down the slope to be just below Arauka's eye level.
"Hey, I don't have to crane my neck at all!" He beamed at her.
"Very nice ta look up at ya," she repeated, softly. "But it's not all dat hot bein' so tall."
"I think I'd try it, just in case," he remarked.
Tak leaned close and peered at Arauka's eyes.
"Ya got pretty eyes, elf," she murmured. "Not sickly green like most a ya kind. Softah, deepah." She hadn't seen a stone that matched the color; they were not the intense fel green of the sin'dorei, nor the pure arcane blue of the quel'dorei they had once been, but a pure, deep shade of green that identified with serenity.
"Thank you," he replied, surprised at the compliment. "I don't think anyone's said such a thing to me before." Tak grinned and tilted her head forward to look at him from beneath her lashes. "I think I'd like to try my hand at Drunken Fist," he said suddenly, opening his bag and searching for a bottle of liquor. He stopped and looked crestfallen as he realized he had none. "Oh," he sighed in disappointment.
"I think I be havin' some from dat snob party down de hill from Fairbreeze," Tak ventured, opening her own bag. "Me and Kai snagged as much a da imbibements as we could snatch out from undaneat' der upturned noses." She chuckled and pulled a dark green wine bottle from the mouth of her pack. Ara eyed it like a cat looks at an unsuspecting mouse.
"That looks like a nice vintage," he said, his voice thrumming with anticipation.
"Aye," Tak agreed, proffering the bottle at him. Her face twisted in consternation as some unseen force prevented her from making the transaction. "What witchery be dis?" she exclaimed, pushing the bottle fruitlessly towards Ara's hands, but getting no further than half the space between them. Ara looked even more disappointed than before.
"I suppose I'll just have to wait until I can buy some," he lamented.
Tak shrugged regretfully as she uncorked it before taking several gulps, enjoying the sweet sharpness of the wine. She lowered the bottle from her lips and giggled at the warm feeling moving down her chest. Too soon, after a few moments, the effect dissipated and she was as sober as before she had drank. She made a face.
"Dis be weak stuff, elvish wine," she said, swirling the contents. She felt a wistful pang for some boar's grog, which a winking orc had pressed a sloshing mug of into her hands at a tavern the last time she had visited Orgrimmar, before she had left for the Eastern Kingdoms - a single large gulp had made her feel as if she had been punched in the head, but she had impressed the orc and his friends by finishing not only the first mug, but three more. She couldn't remember much about the rest of the night, but she had had fleeting visions of looking down from a tabletop and her bags had held considerably more in the way of coins the next morning. She had even woken up with a few stray copper and silver coins inside of her fitted leather chestpiece and leggings. She sighed at he memory.
"If it were any less aged, it'd be weaker," Ara pointed out.
She halted her movements and stared at the bottle thoughtfully, a smile minutely tugging at the corners of her mouth. Tak was a woman of opportunity, and she was not deaf to the niggling scratches at the door of her mind.
"Ya still be wantin' ta try some, anyway, I expect?" Her tone was light and touched with mischief. Ara's eyes lit up and he nodded fervently. Tak allowed her smile to fully bloom as she raised the bottle to her lips.
She took a deep pull as she watched him watching her, his eyes lambent with want. She closed her mouth and lowered the bottle without swallowing her mouthful, then with her other hand tugged down his mask as she stepped closer. She pressed her mouth against his in a rush and slightly parted her lips.
Arauka smiled inwardly as he parted his own lips to suck the wine from her mouth, enjoying the tang as it disappeared down his throat. Tak pulled back as she felt the last of the liquid leave her, wiping her lower lip with a thick finger as a spare drop trickled out. She smiled at him.
"Ah, thanks! That's nice," he said, savoring the warm feeling.
"I hope my unort'odox method of sharin' it wit ya didn't bother ya none," Tak told him.
"Not at all! A delightful way to share it," he assured her brightly. Tak grinned.
"Be ya wantin' more?" she purred, wiggling the bottle. Arauka nodded, smiling widely.
Tak took another large draught from the bottle and this time as she interlocked her lips with his, grasped his shoulder and pulled him to her as she pressed against him, closing her eyes. Ara tilted his head to one side and pulled, enjoying the softness of her mouth as he drank the sweet wine from it. Her pointed tusks grazed against his lips as he broke contact.
"Whee," he mumbled.
"Ya know, I think I be likin' this wine, after all," Tak drawled, smiling languidly.
"I think I'm nearing being able to finally practice that technique," he said, and then hiccuped to his own surprise. He stepped back and put fingers to his mouth as he smiled sheepishly back at her. "That never happens," he said, and then hiccuped again. Tak raised her eyebrows. He cast his eyes downward, his cheeks reddening even more with blush.
"Ya be red, elf," Tak murmured, drawing closer again.
"Maybe ready to try out that technique, after all," he said, lightly slurring, as he plopped down onto the rock.
"I be thinkin' one more," Tak said, raising the bottle to her lips as she dropped to her knees before him and suppressed the desire to drop the distraction of sharing wine and kiss the sin'dorei senseless.
She had begun pulling another mouthful when Arauka hiccuped again and said, "I'm so sleepy," before slumping over onto her and blacking out. He gently snuffled as his face pressed against the soft leather covering her belly.
Tak pursed her lips around her mouthful of wine and looked down disdainfully at the unconscious elf. She swallowed the wine and pressed the bottle against her mouth again, chugging the remainder of the drink and smothering another desire - this time to throttle the monk and shake him like a rag doll. She'd decide if she'd still like to kiss him senseless later.
The sand-brown of her nose and cheeks darkened with a few hues of red as she sat there, tipsy and bored, waiting for the elf in her lap to awaken, her blood hot for a few different reasons; annoyance chief among them. She carelessly dropped the bottle and let it roll off the rock as she pulled her pipe from a pouch on her belt, and then gently procured a small pinch of dried herbs from another pouch before packing the bowl. She lit the herbs and puffed a few times to encourage the smolder before she dragged slow and deep. She exhaled an appreciative shudder. Her annoyance ebbed slightly as the sweet-yet-pungent scent and flavor of the smoke filled her olfactory senses.
After several minutes and a very satisfactory session, during which she had managed to practice blowing the smoke rings that Jez'ran had taught her, Tak shoved Arauka off of her lap and pulled a water skin from her pack. She turned him onto his back as she savagely bit off the seal and then shook the skin over his face, splashing him with water and slapping his cheek a few times. The monk sputtered awake, disoriented.
"Wha?" he muttered.
"Drink," Tak demanded as she shoved the skin in his face. "Drink. Ya be needin' it, ya lightweight."
Arauka took the skin and drank deeply. He exhaled, sitting up and rubbing the water and rock dust from his cheeks.
"Ah, thank you," he said. "I seem to have gotten some of the dirt from the rock onto my face. That helped." He looked at her as she loomed over him, smoke faintly curling from the pipe clenched at the side of her mouth.
Tak affixed him with an unreadable expression and stood up in a quick, fluid motion. She raised her hands and a shower of water suddenly appeared and drenched the monk. He made a noise of alarm at the cool temperature before the water instantly evaporated.
"How refreshing," he gasped. He felt sober and renewed. Tak smirked and snuffed her pipe, emptying the ashes and dottle before replacing it lovingly into its pouch.
"That water be," she chuckled.
"Look!" Arauka suddenly exclaimed, jumping to his feet and gesturing wildly to the beach. "Murlocs! We shall take their spines." He bounded down the rock and rolled as he hit the sand.
"De Loa know I need an outlet for my frustrations," Tak muttered as she watched the sin'dorei tumble forward like a leather ball at breakneck speed. She sighed heavily and padded after him, invoking lightning's protective barrier around herself and beseeching fire to imbue her staff.
--
Back in the building that passed for an inn in Tranquilien, Arauka and Tak sat on the floor close to a brazier full of magically-fueled fire. Tak closed her eyes smiled blissfully, enjoying the warmth as it seeped through her skin and into her bones as she drank a mug of spiced cider. She heard the rustle of leather from where Arauka sat next to her.
"Ahh," he sighed, his voice clear and unmuffled. "Much better."
Tak parted her lids and turned her head to look at him. Her mouth fell open and her eyes widened as she openly gaped at what she saw: long, straight locks of pale gold hair, somehow glossy, smooth, and only slightly tousled despite being confined inside a leather hood all day; though his tapering ears were pink from being pinned close to his head.
"And I thought my own hair be lookin' like molten metal," she murmured, awed.
"Oh, that's right - you haven't seen me without my hood on!" Arauka said cheerfully. He smoothed a few stray hairs back from his forehead. Tak continued to stare, unabashed. She reached out a hand and gently touched one of his long ears, running her finger along its taper.
"Dey so soft," she murmured. Arauka snickered and canted his head away.
"That tickles," he chuckled.
"Ya can touch mine, if'n ya want," Tak offered, turning and angling her head to offer her own ear to him. It was not as long, but it was also pointed and tapering. "I not be so ticklish." Arauka ran his thumb over the cartilage and piercings.
"Oh! Yours are soft, too. The skin is so smooth," Arauka marveled. Tak flushed at his compliment; nobody had ever called any skin of hers "smooth".
"I sure beat myself up today," sighed Arauka as he slumped forward.
The corners of Tak's mouth curled up in a smile and she slipped a hand beneath the curtain of golden hair to drag her fingers along Arauka's neck. Arauka groaned and leaned into her touch the way a cat would. Tak's cheeks and nose darkened as she raised her other hand to join the first in rubbing at his shoulders through the leather. Her thumbs ran beneath the neck of his chestpiece, pressing into the slightly swollen flesh of his upper back.
"That sure feels nice," Arauka mumbled, scooting closer to her and leaning his torso on her lap. Tak slowed her hands and stopped rubbing altogether when she heard heard his moans and sighs give way to the even breathing that told her he had fallen asleep. She smothered an exasperated groan and smoothed his hair back from his face and ears.
"You sleep now, ya moron," she muttered, staring into the flames.
