It felt great to have a body again. It had been a long time since he had fought alongside the Auster Folk, but not so long that he had forgotten the feel of the wind on his face and the ground beneath his feet. It seemed that being deprived of those sensation had only strengthened them once he regained them.
However, he knew that his time in this body would be limited. It was always so for those of his kind, a price to pay for the knowledge they had of the True Chronicles.
The minute he saw Zenoa, he knew she was one of his kind. Even though he had never seen another like him before, he recognized her aura. It was much more powerful than his own, and somehow she had inherited the Tablet of Promise for this world.
"Of course I don't know who you are," were her first words to him. "But I know you're like me, only weaker."
Ordovic was a proud warrior, and knew better than to lose his temper over a petty insult. "I am Ordovic, who fought against the Order with the Auster Folk before our world was destroyed."
She nodded and smiled. "I am Zenoa."
That was all. She wasn't going to tell him where she was from, or what her relation was to the other Starbearers. Perhaps there was none, or perhaps she merely liked to keep everyone wondering about her. Either way, it did not matter to him. He only wanted to get closer to her.
Months passed, and the Gadolinium Company continued to grow as more allies joined and took up residence at Curium Castle. Sieg proved to be a charismatic and capable leader, and his innocent optimism could bring a smile to the most skeptical of faces.
Ordovic spent most of his time in the room he shared with Kashgar, reminiscing about the days they fought together. Every now and then, however, he would visit Zenoa, and the two of them would share what they knew about other worlds.
"There was a world I learned about through hearsay," Ordovic said one day. "There have been several events throughout that world's history where 108 Starbearers--they call them 'Stars of Destiny,' but it's the same idea--have come together to face an enemy. The powers they use are called 'Runes,' which can be affixed to the hand or forehead."
"I know of that world," Zenoa said. "Their True Chronicle is broken into 27 'True Runes.' Possessing just one of those runes grants the bearer immense power and eternal life. Of course, along with that comes the responsibility of keeping the True Rune from falling into the wrong hands. Most of the wars involving the joining of 108 Stars of Destiny are connected to at least one of the True Runes in some way."
"What do you know about the World of Emptiness?" Ordovic asked. "I only know there are monsters there, fierce and terrible ones."
Zenoa frowned. "Well, it looks as though you've one-upped me. I don't know of that world. I do know of the World of Wings and Scales. Only dragons live there, so the Starbearers must all be dragons. I wonder if the same is true of the World of Emptiness?"
"How many of these worlds have you been to?"
Zenoa thought for a moment. "Not too many, really. Maybe five or six. But travel between worlds was originally forbidden--and impossible until around a hundred years ago." She smiled mischievously. "When I learned that there was a way to travel to other words, I had to try it a few times. It was then that I traveled to the World of the Runes, but only briefly. It was the only world I've been to--save for your original world--that had anything worth mentioning. The rest were rather dull and far too similar to mine."
He waited for her to say more, but she remained silent. "So you're not telling me which world you're from?"
Zenoa shrugged. "Does it matter? It's not much different from this one, really."
Ordovic frowned. "Tell me if you're heard of this one," he said. "It is said that most of that world is covered with monsters who feed on one another for survival, only to birth even more abominations. All natural species are confined within a tiny square surrounded by a barrier which keeps out the monsters. If not for that square, chaos truly would reign supreme all over that world."
"Hmm." Zenoa looked thoughtful. "No, I don't think I've heard of that one. Have you been to it?"
"No. In fact, I don't even know if it exists. It's just a rumor. The book where I read about it was over 200 years old." He paused. "Which means that travel between worlds must have been possible further back in the past than we thought."
"It was always possible," Zenoa said. "Just not as accessible as it is now. And it mostly happened by accident."
The discussions he had with Zenoa were always enlightening, and he could only hope she felt the same. The time when they would fight the One King was rapidly approaching, and after escaping from their "eternal day," each member of the Gadolinium company was more determined than ever to give his or her best in defeating the order. Even the non-combatants were contributing to the fight in every way they could.
But there was a problem. They still had no way of fighting the One King. None of their attacks seemed to work, even when they used the Marks of the Stars. And if they didn't find a way to defeat him, they would either die or be trapped in another eternal day--maybe forever this time. What was to be done?
Of course, the leader would not even consider the option of sacrificing anyone's life. He insisted there had to be another way, but Ordovic wasn't so sure. Neither was Zenoa.
"His optimism is inspiring every now and then," she admitted when the two of them were alone, "but this time..."
"The problem is there's no way of knowing unless we try it," Ordovic said. "Just like our leader's always saying."
"I think he would give up his own life without question," said Zenoa. "But if there's one Starbearer who should remain alive in that course of action, it's the Tenkai Star. And he couldn't carry that burden, especially if it were all for nothing."
Ordovic smiled grimly. "Would you be able to do it?"
"I'm not sure," she admitted. "It would be a gamble. But I suppose anything we try will be."
"I wonder what the One King is, anyway. He seems more god than human."
"He does," agreed Zenoa. "But it's not as though those are the only two options. Whatever he is, he seems to bear some relation to the Stars. He feels, to me, like a Starbearer--but one that's 'incorrect' somehow, incomplete. Or perhaps too complete, if my hunch is correct."
Too complete? "So what are you planning to do after this battle against the One King?"
Zenoa grinned. "Isn't it considered bad luck to discuss such things?"
"Hmmm...Maybe. Then what is it you'd like to accomplish before this battle is fought? You know, just in case?"
He expected a witty, insincere reply, but instead she grew quiet. "That's a good question," she finally said. "Let me think on it for a little while. What about you?"
"Well..." He hesitated, wondering if she would be angry if he said what was on his mind. "Truth be told, there's really only one thing. I'd like to tell you that I'm in love with you."
For once, Zenoa looked shocked; however, she recovered quickly and laughed. "Now that I never would have expected from anyone. Not even you. May I ask why?"
"Well, I'm not sure," he admitted. "Of course you're beautiful, but...Well, begging your pardon, so are many women in Gadolinium Company. I suppose it might be...mystery? Maybe? No? Then..." He stopped talking and thought hard about it.
"Perhaps it's because you and I are similar in kind," she offered.
"Yeah, that's a good part of it." He paused, then added, "And I enjoy spending time with you. I have learned so much from you. You really do make for pleasant company."
Zenoa laughed again and gave him a friendly slap on the shoulder. "Come on, what's wrong with you? Nobody in their right mind would say that to me."
"But it's true," Ordovic insisted. "Sure, you pick on people a lot, but you're interesting and you give your respect to people who earn it. Everybody admires you, Zenoa. And even if they didn't, I...I still find it fun and exciting to be around you."
"Well, thank you." Then Zenoa said something that surprised him. "I've grown quite fond of you as well. Don't ask me to say I'm in love with you, though. It would be bad for my image."
"I understand," said Ordovic, nodding. "It's like you've come to care a lot about Sieg, but you'd rather die than say it out loud."
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that. Anyway, what should we do now that we've confessed to one another?" Her lips twitched invitingly.
"People do strange things when they know they could die tomorrow," Ordovic said, taking a step toward her.
"Wait." Zenoa placed a hand on his chest to stop him. "Not here. Let's go someplace a little more secluded. Tehah Village, how about that?"
"Wouldn't the Scribe Village be more secluded?" Ordovic asked.
"Yes, but it's so quiet you can hear a pin drop, and the walls are paper-thin. No privacy."
"Ah, of course..." Ordovic coughed. "Do you...make a lot of noise?"
"More than usual," was all she said.
***
"You want to go to Tehah Village?" Diadora repeated. "But why?"
"None of your business," Zenoa said, smiling cheerfully.
"And you're going with Ordovic," Diadora said slowly.
"Right."
Ordovic could see the wheels turning in Diadora's head. He had a feeling she knew exactly what the two were up to.
Diadora sighed and nodded. "I suppose it is none of my business. All right...although I never imagined I'd use my Chronicle of Endless Travels for this."
***
Ordovic had never been to Tehah Village before, but clearly Zenoa was well-known here. The villagers obviously recognized her, but they maintained a respectful distance.
"I like this place," she said to him. "The people here mostly keep to themselves. And both the mountains and the freezing air seem to build a wall of privacy around you. The rooms at the inn are nice and warm, too."
"That's good." Ordovic shivered. "I'm not used to the cold."
"I would think not, living in a volcano and all."
"Technically we don't live in the volcano. Just near it."
"Good evening," the inkeeper greeted them when they walked inside. "Oh, Lady Zenoa! What a pleasure to see you! And who is your guest?"
The ceiling was so low that Ordovic was having trouble keeping his horn from scraping against it. "I am Ordovic."
"Forgive our lack of accomodations for Auster folk," the innkeeper said. "But if this keeps up, we might make some modifications to our building."
"It's all right," Ordovic assured her. "I don't plan to do much standing here, anyway."
The innkeeper gave both of them a knowing smile, but said nothing. "Here is your key. I hope both of you have a lovely time this evening."
Their room was simple but clean, and the bed was big enough for both of them.
"You wear a lot of clothes." Zenoa chuckled as she pulled off her overcoat.
"I don't appear too imposing without my armor," he explained as he removed his headgear. "And I'm not as good-looking as Vaslof, I'm afraid."
"Well, I don't know many men who would be interested in a bald women," Zenoa countered, and her dress fell to the floor with a rustle. Her sleeves, however, stayed on.
"I was wondering how that ensemble was held together." Now Ordovic was removing his armor; underneath, however, there were still several layers of clothing to muddle through.
"It's called the magic of elastic," Zenoa explained as she pulled off her sleeves. "Anyway, hurry up. I want to see your body." She tugged at Ordovic's shawl. "Here, let me help."
It took about five minutes, but the two of them finally managed to remove Ordovic's clothing.
"Do you put all this on and take it all off every day?" Zenoa asked.
"Nah, I just bathe with it all on," Ordovic joked. "Saves me the trouble." He made an appreciative one-over of Zenoa's body. He liked the contrast of the white tattoos on her dark brown skin.
"You're not bad yourself, you know," she said, smiling invitingly. "Now come here."
He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the mouth. She responded by nipping at his lip, a sensation he found both pleasant and erotic. Now that he held her close, she seemed much smaller. Still, she was not at all submissive, but sought to control his every movement, all in play, of course. Her nails dug into his back as she broke the kiss and began to nibble on his ear.
"Damn," he gasped as she bit particularly hard on his earlobe. "You're going to chew me to pieces if this keeps up."
"Am I being too rough?" she whispered.
"Nah, I'm an Auster warrior, after all." He scratched lightly at her scalp. "I admit, I've longed to touch this smooth head from the moment I first laid eyes on it."
"Mmm..." Zenoa was now working her way down his neck, giving him little love bites. "It's been a couple of decades since I had hair." She shuddered as he ran one of his hands down her belly. "You're eager to get this party started, aren't you?"
"I'm sorry," he said, snatching his hand away. "I wasn't going to touch you without your permission."
"Touch me," she insisted, directing his hand between her legs. "Less talking, more touching. My body wants to swallow you up."
It always surprised Ordovic how quickly a woman could get wet; it seemed to him that it should take longer, even though it didn't take long at all for his cock to harden. He loved how hot she was inside, how she rubbed herself against his hand, covering his enormous fingers with her juices.
"Oohhhh, that's what I've been waiting for," she sighed. "I love how hard and thick your fingers are. I could ride them to an orgasm, easily."
In fact, she seeemed intent on doing just that. Her eyes grew distant, and she began to rock back and forth on his fingers, using one arm to hold on to him while she rubbed her clitoris with her other hand.
But she wasn't finished yet. She forced herself to stop and pulled herself away from his embrace, then fell back onto the bed.
"I can't last much longer," she breathed. "I want you to fuck me raw."
Ordovic grinned and leapt onto the bed. He took Zenoa's hips in his hands and looked down at her. Her chest was heaving, and a deep flush covered her entire body.
"I'm big," he warned, holding his cock up for her to see. "Well, not for an Auster, but for a human. Will you be all right?"
"Give it to me," she demanded. "If it hurts I'll let you know."
Still, he didn't want to just drive into her like a drill. Very carefully, he placed his hands on her hips and lifted her lower body onto his lap. He eased himself into her, then let a sigh of relief when he saw that he hadn't split her open. Then, he began to move inside of her.
He groaned aloud at the pleasure of being inside a woman for the first time in many years. He looked down at her face, which was twisted into an expression of excitement and pleasure. The more he thrusted, the more her breasts bounced.
It wasn't long at all before the friction was too much for both of them. He shot his hot cream into Zenoa's womb, and she howled with orgasm before the two of them collapsed onto the bed.
"Sorry," Ordovic said. "I finished a little too quickly. It's been a long time."
"It's all right," Zenoa assured him. "I was hoping you would. There's nothing more boring than having to wait for a man to finish." She yawned. "That was good. Nice and brief. I don't know about you, but I could use some sleep now."
"I agree." Ordovic pulled the covers over the two of them. "Let's do it again later."
***
He awoke to Zenoa whispering in his ear. "Wake up. I want to clean you up."
Ordovic yawned and stretched and sat up. "Can you fit all of me in your mouth?" he asked, incredulous.
"Of course not. But I can still use my tongue." She crawled to the foot of the bed and knelt over his cock. Her tongue darted out to lick her lips. "Stay back and don't touch me. I'm in charge now--of both of us." She drew her tongue up from the base, looking very much like a cat toying with her prey. When she reached the tip, she puckered her lips and sucked at it, exaggerating the wet sounds that came from her mouth.
Damn, she was good. It was impossible to think about anything with her sucking on him like this. He enjoyed her expressions, too. Sometimes she looked calm, and at other times she seemed almost angry, as though his penis were the One King himself. But she never once looked submissive, and he liked that.
In spite of that, he was amazed that she was still able to take a bit of him into her mouth. She appeared to be in no discomfort as she sucked on the head, pressing against the sides with her breasts. He longed to touch them again, but he obeyed her command to stay put.
As she continued to caress his shaft and balls with her tongue, he noticed that she was only using one hand to steady herself. Her other hand was working furiously between her legs, and she moaned with arousal as she pleasured him, increasing the sensitivity of his own twitching stem.
"Zenoa," he gasped thickly, "I'm going to undo your cleaning job if you don't stop right now."
In response, Zenoa pressed her mouth to the tip of his cock again, this time opening her mouth as wide as she could. She looked up at him, and he could tell from her eyes that she meant to take it all into her mouth.
"If..." He meant to say, "If that's what you want," but the rest of his words were drowned out by a powerful orgasm that left him thrashing about as he tried desperately to contain his shouts of delight.
Amazingly, she swallowed everything and still managed to give herself another climax where her screams joined his own. It felt so incredible, he didn't even think to be concerned for the other guests.
When it was all over, Zenoa stood up and stretched. "That was a pretty good workout. Are you ready to check out?"
***
When Ordovic and Zenoa returned to Curium Castle, Sieg was waiting for them.
"Where the heck have you two been?" he demanded. "I've been waiting to start a meeting. I think there's a way we can beat the One King and live to tell the story."
Ordovic looked at Zenoa, who looked back and smiled. Then, she turned to Sieg. "All right, let's hear it. But it had better be worth it."
***
"So do you think that plan's going to work?" Ordovic asked Zenoa.
Zenoa shrugged. "Well, as the little brat says, we'll never know until we try."
Ordovic chuckled. "You really like Lord Sieg, don't you?"
"Tell anyone and you'll die," Zenoa said playfully. "But I will say that I think we have a good chance of victory. Sieg's method makes a lot of sense, since the Chronicles are, in a way, a foil to the One King."
"That's what I think, too," Ordovic agreed. "When the time comes, I'll fight until the enemy is defeated, or until I die." He patted Zenoa on the arm. "And even after the war ends and we all go on with our lives, I won't forget you, Zenoa."
***
As you and I both know, the One King was defeated, and Zenoa and Ordovic did go their separate ways. But neither they, nor the guests and staff at the Tehah Village end, ever forgot their night together.
