Prompt:
TIMmy boy isn't having a good day thanks to Shepard. Shep has just blown the Collector base to hell, nicked the Normandy and made the whole Lazarus cell defect. So to get back at Shepard he has the Virmire Survivor (and Shepard's lover) kidnapped and orders for them to be tortured and for experimental enhancements with Reaper tech (e.g what they did to their troops in ME3) to be done.
And Shepard isn't allowed to rescue them as they are currently under arrest back on Earth. So comes ME3 and Shepard finds the VS, indocrinated and completely under Cerberus command and he/she has no choice but to kill them.
The Illusive Man watched the image of Shepard flicker and disappear, and he resisted the urge to throw his drink glass across the room. She’d refused to turn over the Collector Base to him. And Miranda Lawson had tendered her resignation. The entire Lazarus cell was gone - his investment was gone.
Shepard’s assault had put the Collectors - and by extension, the Reapers - on notice. Which meant that he had very little time left to plan. He was almost tempted to let it go. To write it off and move on.
Except that if Shepard wasn’t on his side, she was opposing him. He could predict what she would do - invoke her status as a Spectre to try and unify the Council races. Which lessened the chances that Cerberus would reap the spoils of the Reapers.
Which meant that he needed to take Shepard out of the game.
A straightforward attack wouldn’t do it. Shepard would be on guard for something like that now. Besides, after all the work he’d put into her, she was damn near indestructible these days. So he had to attack her from another angle. Find a weak point.
He pressed one of the buttons on his chair, and a minute later, one of his operatives entered. “Bring me Kaidan Alenko,” he directed. “Alive and in one piece.”
The operative nodded and walked out. The Illusive Man allowed himself a small moment of satisfaction. He’d already started using Reaper technology to make loyal Cerberus shock troops. It was time to see what it could do on an Alliance soldier like Alenko. He would relish the moment when Shepard figured out what he’d done, the horror she’d experience knowing that he controlled her lover.
Then he put the matter out of his mind. Alenko would be delivered soon enough, and he had other things to take care of.
Kaidan wished he could remember how he’d gotten here. The last time he’d had a blackout of this magnitude had been in the weeks after Shepard’s death, when he’d drunk to forget how close he’d been to getting her off the ship. How close she’d been to living. After Horizon, he’d only had one blackout and it hadn’t been quite as bad. The joy of seeing her alive had blunted the self-destructive instinct he’d had at losing her all over again.
Except this time, no amount of alcohol would explain his current situation. He’d been out on assignment in the Terminus Systems when he’d been taken by surprise, injected with some sort of drug before he could start fighting back. He hated that he’d been taken by surprise, but as the fog cleared, he recognized that he wouldn’t have had a chance. Whoever had taken him - they’d known what they were doing.
Had it been Cerberus?
That seemed like the logical conclusion. He doubted that anyone else would have been able to get into position, approach him unnoticed. Any non-human would have been noticed in the colony instantly, and no other organization did black ops like Cerberus.
But Shepard was with Cerberus, now. Or maybe not anymore. He hadn’t expected it, but she’d eventually written him back after Horizon and they’d begun to repair things. Reading through the lines - knowing Shepard as he did - he’d gotten the impression that she wasn’t planning to keep her Cerberus affiliation for long. Assuming she’d made it back through the Omega-4 Relay, she might be going to the Alliance even now.
So no help from that quarter.
His thoughts were interrupted when the small door to his room - cell? - opened, and someone walked in. He wasn’t fast enough on his feet to make a bolt for the door before the woman closed it behind her. Kaidan switched to lifting her off the floor with his biotics, slamming her against the wall. He rushed forward and grabbed her by the throat. “Where am I?” he demanded. “Who are you?”
Instead of being pinned and gasping for air, the black-haired woman just stared at him before lifting up her arm and grabbing his wrist. She twisted.
His wrist broke, and he dropped her, letting out a yell. Before he could recover, she’d turned the tables and slammed him up against the wall. “My name is Dr. Eva Coré,” she said calmly. “And this is a Cerberus facility. You’re a lucky man, Kaidan Alenko. The Illusive Man assigned me personally to this task. By the time I’m done with you, you’ll be as loyal to them as I am.”
“Go to hell,” he hissed out. “I’ll never work for Cerberus.”
Eva tsked as she increased the pressure on his throat. He started to feel lightheaded. God, but she was strong. He almost hoped that she’d kill him. Kaidan was a strong man, but he knew that he was only human, and the possibility that she had some way to turn him was, sadly, all too real. Cerberus was willing to do anything.
“You’ll be singing a different tune when I’m done with you,” she said, and Kaidan felt his stomach drop even more. Because that voice had almost been a throaty purr, a seductive tone.
Kaidan really hoped that he wasn’t in as much trouble as it appeared he was.
