[ First Skyrim Fic. Woop. No real idea why I'm writing it. Bored I suppose? ]
Nightmares of arching wings, breath hot enough to melt stone and a voice, something in a language that he both knew and did not know plauged him and often times he woke with splitting headaches. The dragons were gone, they had been banished and killed, why was he still dreaming of them? Throwing the blankets from his body and half storming to his window the Altmer coudlnt' shake the feeling that there was something horribly wrong in his life. The Dragonborn had delt with these monsters, the war that had been solved had only been solved for the moment and already a new war was on the heels of the last. Conflict never stayed solved long and it was a troubling lesson you learned when you lived as long as the Altmer did. War was just as much a part of life as eating and drinking were and if any race knew how to fight it was the Nords so why he stayed in the stone halls of Markarth not even he knew.Fingers curling over the sil of the window of stone he swallowed and looked out over the city, the whole of it asleep as night had long since settled over the land. The Foresworn weren't even much of an issue anymore, with the dragons gone the gaurds could go back to dealing with more human threats so the city was in a lull of safe darkness and it both scared the Mer and pressed him up to the edge of unease.
There was no reason that every night this week he's had these dreams, no, nightmares, and he's got to find a way to put an end to it so he dressed and gathered up his sword, and while not everyone carried one anymore he found himself unable to release his. He had to see the Apothecary, he had to get something help him sleep, to stop the nightmares, or with luck both. Taking the stairs carved into the stone far too quickly he had gone instead of to the shop, to the home of the Apothecary and knocked loudly on the door drawing the attention of a guard who kept his distance and watched. No answer at first. Another loud knock and a defeated look on the face of the Mer before the door swung open with the smells of herbs, the dim light of a candle and a relaxing warmth billowing out and offering an inkling of hope.
"I'm very sorry to have bothered you so late, if this wasn't urgent I would not be here."
"Ah, Kaelan, the nightmares again?" The elderly man had asked while squinting making sure that he had gotten the Mer right with his eyesight the way it was.
"Yes." Kaelan had answered with another sorry look before he was welcomed inside and sank onto a stool near the door. Fishing out the coin from the bag at his hip he procured double the amount due to the late night visit and hastle that his troubles were putting the old Nord through. "I haven't had a full nights sleep in countless days." He had offered as he counted.
"Perhaps I'm not who you should be speaking to then. Perhaps a Mage. This doesn't sound medical, and it's not normal. Perhaps the Gods speak to you? You should seek out the aid of someone aside from me. These are just bandages, you need help pride or no pride." Pushing the bottled mixture to his chest and holding out his hand for the coin he gave him a stern look. "We're friends, we've been friends for years, I wouldn't lie to you Kael."
Pursing his lips after dropping the coins into his friends hand he removed the stopper in the bottle and downed it where he sat before offering it back knowing it could be re-used. Damn thing may as well have his name etched into it. "Perhaps." It was as close to his admiting that someone else was right as he could get and rising back up to his feet he placed a hand on the shoulder of his old friend. "After I've slept I'll leave for the capitol, I'm sure that I can find the answer there."
"No no, that won't do. Go to Winterhold, the mages will know if it's magical or if it's the Gods."
A grimmace crossed Kaelan's features. That was quite the trip, and even now it was dangerous. Still his friend was right and he knew it.
"I'll go." Kaelan said simply as he felt the warmth of sleep slowly start creeping back up over him. "Once I've rested I'll go, lest I fall asleep here in your home." A half dead smile in hopes of lightening the mood before he said his goodbyes and returned t his dwelling to rest in the dreamless sleep his friends potions would send him off into, the only way he could sleep lately.
It seemed no matter what peace might have fallen over the land he would still need to return to adventuring. It must have simply been his fate.[ So. I like this. I'm going to keep writing it. Lemme know what ya think, if ya liked it and so on. I do read all of the reviews and what not. ]While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
