AUTHOR’S NOTE:
Hello all, the name’s Mr.Fairplay as you can see and this is my fanfic of Mass Effect 3, I wanted to write this because like countless like me, I wasn’t satisfied with the ending of such an epic trilogy, so this is my small effort to make things right. Before we move on, I wanna say that this is my first attempt at writing a story so there’s a big chance that it might suck, so apologies in advance; also this story will feature alien sex so if it isn’t your thing, please do not read.
OK, so some things that you might need to know to understand stuff more clearly, this is completely optional and you may skip this part. My Shepard is male, named Will Shepard, default appearance, Soldier, Spacer, War Hero. The approach that he takes is 80% Paragon and 20% Renegade, and he romanced Tali. I had all the DLCs so there might be some confusion if you didn’t have a particular one.
Now about this chapter, I have chosen to keep the prologue as it is and not tweak it much other than the addition of some dialogue that I found was lacking, as the story progresses in later chapters the approach will be more behind the scenes and very little content from the missions (with the exception of the Citadel DLC, that was awesome!), the main focus will be Tali/Shepard relationship. You have to wait a few chapters for the sex as i want to focus on the story, but rest assured once it happens there will be lots of scene and very graphic, so i request that you be patient if you're eager for that.
Finally, a huge thank you to all my friends for inspiring me to write, Tahn, Joe Long, KoKoa_b, DirtyAngel, Samara, DesideriusPrice, ChrissyQuin and Ayato; thank you so much guys, you’re the best (sorry if I left someone out). Kudos to Bioware for creating such an epic game, and heartfelt ‘fuck you’ for such a crappy ending. The name was taken from Malukah’s tribute song on YouTube, i chose it because it fits Shepard's character perfectly and also i couldn't think of anything else. Anyway, she makes amazing cover songs and has an angelic voice, do check her out. Also, if you want to create a futuristic ambience while reading the story, I recommend zAllex’s music. Rant over, on with the story!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shepard was in his cell on Earth, datapad in hand, pacing the room restlessly, thoughts roaming wildly; The Reapers are coming, did the galaxy listen to him? Did he destroy the Bahak system and its 300,000 Batarian inhabitants for nothing? Did he buy the galaxy more time or did he make the Reapers’ work more easier? What of the Normandy? What of its crew? Numerous thoughts were in his head, but they all kept going to one, no matter what he did he kept thinking about just one person, Tali.
He always had an eye on her, and had developed strong feelings for her shortly after they met on the Citadel more than 2 years back… well, technically he saved her from the Shadow Broker’s agents, she joined his crew then. Tali was more than a friend for Shepard, he wanted her since the days of the SR-1 but he couldn’t act on his feelings because she would go back to the fleet soon after her pilgrimage, but after Cerberus revived him and he recruited her on the SR-2 he didn’t care, he let his feelings known to her and she had reciprocated them, of course a little encouragement from Kelly also helped, she had told him that she suspected Tali wanted to be more than friends, that was all he needed. Tali felt the same way about Shepard, she also wanted him from back then but also couldn’t act on her feelings, partly because of her pilgrimage and partly because of the fact that she was a Quarian and couldn’t get out of her suit, she wanted more than that, she wanted to touch him, feel him, share herself with him. When Shepard confessed, she knew she had to do it, she had to have him.
Shepard’s attention was brought to a boy playing on the roof of one of the surrounding buildings, he smiled remembering his time as a boy like him, he had many toy ships and fighters like the boy he was watching and as he grew up he got into building model ships, cruisers, fighters, frigates and the like. The boy was having the time of his life, no worries at all, just having fun, so carefree, so innocent; it was this innocence that Shepard fought for, to preserve it, so that he may live and countless others like him. Shepard’s musing were interrupted by Lieutenant James Vega entering the room, Vega was the guard assigned to Shepard during his arrest.
“Commander”, Vega saluted.
“You’re not supposed to call me that anymore, James” Shepard replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
“Not supposed to salute you either. Enjoying the view?” Vega replied.
That got a chuckle out of Shepard, “Yeah, it’s breathtaking. You know, I finally get to see Earth after years, and I’m stuck here in this cell?”
“Why’s that, Commander?”
“I thought I just…”
“I know, I know, force of habit. But still.”
“Parents were Alliance officers, spent most of my childhood on ships and colonies where they were stationed, visited Earth maybe once or twice. It’s funny, the only time I spend more than a week is locked up”
“Well, maybe it’s finally your time to go. The Defence Committee wants to see you”
Vega’s tone when he uttered his last sentence was troubling, to an ordinary person it would be nothing, but Shepard’s instincts screamed trouble at him, but he kept his composure, he had to find out what was going on.
“Sounds important” Shepard said as he tossed the datapad he held in his hands onto the bed, and following Vega.
The people outside were frantic, something was not right, Shepard could feel it, he bumped into a few people literally causing him to lag behind but quickly jogged up to Vega.
“What’s going on?” Shepard asked.
“Couldn’t say, just told me they needed you…now” Vega replied.
Shepard knew something was wrong, really wrong, he could feel it, and uneasy feeling in his gut, the hair on the back of his neck standing up; he didn’t have much time to contemplate though as he saw Anderson heading his way, a small smile came upon Shepard’s lips as he watched him make his way over.
“Anderson” Shepard both acknowledged and greeted.
“You look good, Shepard. Maybe a little soft around the edges. How are you holding up since relieved from duty?” Anderson asked.
“It’s not so bad, once you get used to the hot food and soft beds”
“We’ll get it sorted out”
They made their way through the base, the amount of traffic increasing.
Shepard finally asked the question that had been on his mind for the last couple of minutes, “What’s going on? Why is everyone in such a hurry?”
“Admiral Hackett’s mobilizing the fleets, I’m guessing word’s made it to the Alliance Command…Something’s big headed our way” Anderson answered as he made his way up a couple of steps, Shepard had stopped walking and Anderson turned around.
“The Reapers?” Shepard inquired, praying he was wrong, of all the times in his life he wanted to be wrong this time, they weren’t prepared for The Reapers.
“We don’t know. Not for certain”
“What else could it be?”
“If I knew that…”
“You know we’re not ready if it’s them, not by a long shot”
“Tell that to the Defence Committee”
“Unless we’re planning on talking the Reapers to death, the committee is a waste of time.”
“They’re just scared, Shepard. None of them have seen what you’ve seen. You’ve faced down a Reaper…Hell, you spoke to one…Then blew the damn thing up! You’ve seen how they harvest us, what they plan to do to us, you know more about this enemy than anyone.”
“That why they grounded me? Took away my ship? Instead of listening to me, they locked me up? 6 months, Anderson…What have they done?” Shepard replied, the anger and frustration evident in his voice.
“You know that’s not true, Shepard. When you blew up that Batarian relay, hundreds of thousands of Batarians died!” Anderson retaliated.
“You think I don’t know that, I had no choice, it was that or let the Reapers in through our back door, if they were here we would not be having this conversation, Anderson. We got lucky with Sovereign, that was just one Reaper, this is a whole army of the bastards, even if we had all the fleets of the galaxy together we don’t know if we would even survive, let alone win.”
“I know that Shepard, and so does the committee. If it wasn’t for that you’d have been court-martialled and left to rot in the brig”
“That, and your good word?” Shepard’s tone came out unintentionally sarcastic.
“Yeah, I trust you Shepard, and so does the committee” Anderson replied in a calm tone.
“I’m just a soldier, Anderson. I’m no politician.”
“I don’t need you to be either, I just need you to do whatever the hell it takes to help us stop the Reapers”
Making their way through the corridors to the courtroom they ran into Ashley, who had been promoted to Lieutenant Commander, the confrontation was polite but uneasy, and definitely better than their confrontation on Horizon. Finally entering the courtroom, they took their place before the Alliance Council, numerous personnel were scurrying about clearly tense and three council members took their place at the bench. After the customary greetings, the council members began their briefing and Shepard was handed a datapad, numerous Alliance outposts and colonies had stopped reporting in, everything beyond the Sol relay was dark. Shepard’s hair stood on the back of his neck, his sixth sense warning him, he felt it, his instincts warning him, something was about to happen, something really bad.
“Whatever this is, it’s incomprehensibly powerful” said a council member, who seemed to be from England.
“You brought me here to confirm what you already know…The Reapers are here” Shepard replied. All eyes were on Shepard, everyone stopped their work, extremely tense.
“Then…how do we stop them?” asked another council member.
“Stop them? You can’t stop them, this is a force that destroyed every civilization in the galaxy every 50,000 years, civilizations who were more advanced than us, more powerful, and they all died. Stop them? This isn’t about strategy or tactics, this is about survival.” Shepard took a few steps toward the bench, “The Reapers are more advanced than we are, more powerful and intelligent. They don’t fear us, and they’ll never take pity on us”
“But…there must be some way”
“There is” Shepard paused and looked around the room, meeting the gazes of everyone. “If we’re going to have any chance of surviving this, we have to stand together”.
“That’s it…that’s our plan?”
It looked like Anderson, instead of Shepard, was going to reply this time but however either did, an officer interrupted the proceedings telling them that contact with the Luna base had been lost. It was their base on the moon, if it were the Reapers, they were moving too fast. A few seconds later live feed from England came in, it looked like hell, fire everywhere, destroyed buildings, gunfire in the background, a soldier came on screen but the video was too scrambled to make sense of anything, it went to static but before it did, a terrible sound came through, a Reaper horn, and then an explosion, and then nothing. Several other videos pulled up on the screen afterwards from different news channels which showed several cities of Earth under attack from beings that very closely resembled Sovereign.
“What do we do?” a councilor asked, helplessness and fear evident in his voice.
Shepard approached the bench again, “The only thing we can, the only thing we must. We fight or we die”.
“We should get to the Normandy…” Anderson replied after an awkward silence, but was interrupted. At a distance, the same Reaper horn could be heard, a muffled sound but terrifying. Everybody looked at the sky through the window, there was lightning of the color red in the cloud getting brighter and more intense every second, and then one giant laser beam which was the source of the lightning came from the sky and brought with it the source, a Reaper. The beam began moving in the direction of the courtroom, Shepard shouted for everyone to move and run, but he was too late as he beam hit and caused a massive explosion and caused Shepard to fly across the room and hit a wall, rendering him unconscious for a few second. Anderson was yelling his name, trying to find him, Shepard rose up on his elbows and he spotted him. Anderson helped him up and gave him a M-3 Predator heavy pistol. It was happening, The Reapers had arrived.
