BACKSTORY

It has been several hours since the Nautiloid crashed from the skies on the beaches near Baldur's Gate and the weary human wanderer known as Vaelen has already met his share of interesting individuals, all claiming to have also survived the crash; a bitter cleric of Shar, a Mystra worshipping wizard, a strange pale elven noble and an arrogant githyanki warrior, but all prove to be more trouble than their worth in his eyes as he chooses his own path, to travel alone. It is following the encounter with these people that Vaelen finds his way to a sanctuary in the wilds filled with tiefling refugees who are being assisted by local druids and upon witnessing a goblin attack upon the gates he approaches seeking refuge.

Upon gaining entry he begins to get his bearings. The druid grove below is off limits, as are the private quarters of the tiefling refugee leader, a band of mercenaries are preparing to leave the grove following the attack due to lack of payment, several smaller groups of refugees are preparing to leave on their own without escort, nothing that interests Vaelen specifically as he looks to pilfer what he can for himself before leaving these sad people to their fates. It during this exploration of the camp that the wanderer comes across a pair of tieflings interrogating an imprisoned goblin in a secluded area of the camp; this was the moment Vaelen first fixed eyes with her.

Goblin: "Whatcha lookin' at humie? Come to show these tiefs how its done?"
Vaelen looks at the two tieflings and back to the goblin. One of the tieflings is pointing a crossbow at the goblin.
Vaelan: "Your leader won't like it if you kill his only source of intel on where the enemy are coming from?"
The second tiefling puts and arm out and lowers his partner's crossbow.
He's right. She ain't worth it anyway."
The two tieflings leave and Vaelen's eyes fix once again on the goblin.
Vaelen: "I need to get out of this shithole, these refugees are worthless. What's the safest way to Baldur's Gate?"
Goblin: "Get me outta here humie then I'll tell ya."
The wanderer begins looking around for a key but instead takes out a lockpick and begins picking the lock.
Goblin: "I'll show ya the secret way out, the way we came in."
The lock breaks free and the cage door opens up as the goblin lunges out and passed Vaelen, jumping over a chasm to a platform at the back, she stops and looks back.
Goblin: "This way humie."

Vaelen swiftly follows the goblin over to the ledge and she reveals a hidden passage for the two to enter and as the passage closes behind them they are free from the camp.
Goblin: "The names Sazza by the way."
Vaelen: "Call me V."
She grabs his hand and pulls him through the darkness of the cave. Her hand is surprisingly warm considering she was in a cold cage for hours dressed in nothing by rags.
Sazza: "Follow me, I know you humies ain't good in the dark."

For what feels like an eternity was actually only 5 minutes as the two finally approach the light of the day creeping in from the cave exit ahead and finally make it out. They stop at the exit and breath the free air for a moment. Vaelen realises he is still holding Sazza's hand and quickly disengages. The two share an awkward moment as they are not quite sure how to react.

Sazza: "Why dontcha come back to my tribe? We got food and drink there and I'll tell them you freed me. They'll wanna speak to ya I know it."

Minthara pauses for some time and nods, there is seemingly more at play here as she studies Vaelen with a quiet calm before agreeing to spare Sazza.
Minthara: "You are free by your patron's actions. You owe him your life."

Vaelen and Minthara speak for some time more as the pair formulate their plan which will commence the following morning.

As Vaelen exits Minthara's quarters he spots a trio of goblins restraining another goblin, preparing to throw them into a giant spider pit below.
Sazza: "V, tell em what the boss said!"
Vaelen: "Release her immediately, Minthara has commended she go free."

She puts on a brave face but she is completely drained mentally and physically.
Sazza: "Why you keep helpin' me anyway? You got a thing for gobbos?"
Vaelen: "I'm not sure. I like your attitude though and you helped me out."
