Chapter 1: A Meeting of Thieves
Jack adjusted the bow on his back with his right hand, his left running along the feathers’ vanes on the arrows in the quiver at his hip. His breath was as silent as ever, nary more than a whisper. The cold mountain wind blew his faded red hood across his forehead, his longer hairs stabbing his eyes. His leather boots and clothes were specially designed to complete jobs like this one silently. And his job was but a simple one. Get in, get intel, get out, simple as that. If captured, he was a dead man, to Hoshido and Nohr alike.
Although he was trained in archery and hired as a spy, Jack prayed to the dusk dragon that he did not have to use his bow. Gathering intelligence was one thing, but he avoided bloodshed where possible. Taking another’s life away made him feel sick, but this line of work pays well. Food costs money, and the black market’s prices are not for the light of pocket. He did not want his little sister to be forced into performing despicable acts just for food and water.
Jack shook his head, trying to focus. His target was a house in the outskirts of Hoshido, in a small village. Apparently, Ryoma, Hoshido’s crown prince, Hinoka, Hoshido’s eldest princess, and Sakura, Hoshido’s youngest princess, were in a small mountain village on the northern edge of Hoshido’s control. Jack’s job was to find out why. So, as he had done many nights prior, he slipped in between trees as he descended the snowy slopes of the mountain he was camped on. His excuse was always that he was a hunter trying for game, which is why he carries a bow, as was standard for Nohrian spies. The fools in the village barely bat an eye at him as he entered the small collection of houses.
Jack was used to working in the cold, but he was glad that the temperature in the village was warmer than he anticipated. Must be a lot of Fire Tribe people here, he thought. I should be wary; I don’t want to tangle with them. Jack weaved through the houses, blindly wandering to and fro, not making his destination known. He noted which house the royals should be staying in (not too hard, as it had two Pegasi hitched outside the building), and crouched below an open window, listening in on the conversation inside.
“-And one last thing, Shion,” a low female voice said, “Nohrian spies are everywhere. These bastards are scum, and they will not hesitate to murder you in cold blood for this one little letter. So please, stay safe.”
A second female voice, this Shion, replied, “Not to worry, Princess. I know my way around. And I know how to get out of danger. Not to worry, this letter will reach Lady Mikoto’s hands on the ‘morrow, on my honour as a Hoshidan Pegasus Knight. But, if I may, Princess? All that this letter says is that Lady Sakura and Lord Corrin are both safe. If I meet any scoundrels, that information isn’t vitally important anyway, so what should I do?”
“Your life is worth more than a stupid piece of paper, Shion. If it saves your life, then hand it over.” A pause. “The sun will be setting soon. You should go.” Jack took that opportunity to do the same and raced away, into the empty street.
He looked as casual as a thief could look and glanced at his quarry as she left the house. Although she wore the traditional Pegasus Knight garb of a light robe, boots, gloves, and a helmet, Jack felt some kind of bizarre sensation as he looked at her, like she was… important? Like she was… special? Why was that? She was the enemy, and he was hired to do what was necessary. She climbed aboard her steed, and cantered through the streets, careful not to bump into anyone, with Jack following several dozens of meters back. Once outside the village, she took to the skies, flying high up so any untrained eye might mistake her for a bird. Easy pickings for me though, Jack thought as he followed her on the ground into the woods.

Shion landed in a small meadow in the trees and began to take equipment off her steed to set up a camp. Her helmet fell off her head with a gentle thud on the snow as she let her long black hair down. She would eat some rations and sleep in a small tent, with her Pegasus and the fire as her only source of warmth. Still, it was a job that she took pride in, as she knew that such jobs were the backbone of any army. However, despite herself, she really does crave some fresh game, a bird, a rabbit, a deer, alongside some fresh vegetables like the Daikon Radishes of her hometown. Her mind wanders to the wonderful memories of her youth, playing in the river with her brother, her first kiss from her crush under the cherry blossoms, how proud her father looked as she donned her Pegasus Knight armour, just like her mother before her. Shion was so lost in her thoughts that she did not notice the sneaking figure approaching her from behind.
Her Pegasus was the first to notice the threat, who stomped around and flapped her wings, which startled Shion as she turned to face a drawn arrow pointed at her bare skull. A cloaked man, his face obscured by the hood, was ready to shoot her dead this instant, and yet he hadn’t done so yet. Her lance was not within reach. Even still, she kept a knife on hand in case of emergencies, but she could be shot dead if she drew it. She made the smart choice and held her hands up, showing that they were empty, and she slowly rose to her feet, the bow tracking her head. “You want the letter, Nohrian?”
The man spoke gruffly but with a gentle undertone, “..Don’t take it personally, Miss Pegasus Knight. It’s a job. But no one has to die today. Hand it over, and I leave.” Shion saw that his eyes, as hidden as they were, were not the eyes of a trained assassin.
“And if I don’t, I become worm food, is that it?” A slow nod confirmed her suspicions. She gathered her thoughts like her father used to tell her to do and spoke again as she lowered her hands. “…But you won’t do it. You could very easily end my life, paint the snow red, and get a golden star from your boss for your efforts. But you don’t want to do it, do you?”
The man in the cloak took a step backward. “W-What are you doing, madwoman?! I-I’ll do it! Do you have a death sentence or something?” Silence for four painfully long seconds, where the only sound was the steady inhale-exhale rhythm of both parties. A long sigh from the man as he slowly loosened the tension on his bow. “I don’t take it back; you really are a madwoman.” His eyes flicked toward the ground, seemingly ashamed. “Any other spy and you’d probably already be a pincushion.”
“It’s your eyes, Nohrian.” Shion placed a hand on her chest, feeling her own heartbeat as she reminisced her mother’s words from many years ago. “They betray you. You aren’t who you think you are. And what you are is not a killer.” She smiles at him, genuinely. Jack’s breath catches as she calls him out. She decides to take another leap of faith. “My name is Shion, might I ask yours?”
Jack hesitates a moment, then lowers his bow completely, returning the arrow to its quiver. “...I’m Jack, from Windmire.” He then relaxes and lowers his hood, showing his face to this woman who was supposed to be his enemy. “My job is to gather intelligence, not to murder people.”
“So you want the letter?”
“It simply says that Sakura and… Corrin, was it? They are safe. That’s all, right?”
“H-how did…? …You eavesdropped.” Shion felt her face grow red in both anger and embarrassment.
“I don’t know what’s gotten into me today, in all honesty. I should’ve just taken the letter as you slept. But now both of us can do our jobs.”
This caught Shion by surprise, as that was a more logical plan. “So why didn’t you? I didn’t even notice you when I was awake.”
Jack got flustered and stumbled over his words. “I-I… T-That’s not the point. The point is that both you and I can live today, and both do what we are paid to do.” He flipped up his hood again and turned to run away, but looked over his shoulder. “Don’t die, Shion.” And then she watched him run into the forest.
Shion felt the tension in her body loosen as she saw his form disappear in the darkening woods. She sat down on the bedroll and sighed. “Jack… You don’t die on me either. You are… a good man.” She looked up at the stars that were starting to appear in the sky. “Riku... brother… His eyes remind me of you…”
