A moving truck advances through a light forest in the Hoenn countryside. From the perspective of a passenger, large trees on either side of the road seem to rush past the cab, while Mount Chimney in far distance towers over their journey, ever watchful over its land. Within the trailer, a boy sits against a stack of boxes precariously wobbling with each turn. He pushes back against them whenever they threaten to topple over. He wonders if this was such a great idea. At least there was a window installed on the side of the wall so he didn’t have to sit in complete darkness. Not that it would have mattered. He looks back down at his “PokeGame”, a small handheld device that he received last month for his 18th birthday. Quiet as ever, Brendan didn’t complain when he got it, thinking it was a very childish gift for a now-adult. However, with the length of this ride, he’s silently thanking his parents for it, because along with a few books, it’s kept his hungry, wandering mind thoroughly occupied during the journey.
On his device, he played his one and only game for it. One called ‘’Poke Manager”, wherein you control the actions of not a trainer, but a scouting agent/manager for them. Not a trainer himself though, he’s always been surrounded by them. The whole reason he’s in the back of this truck in the first place was because of his dad landing a job as a Gym Leader here. Some of his best childhood friends collected and battled bug-types. But... those bugs always creeped him out, no matter how “cute” they said they were. He glances out of the small window. The trees have parted ways with the foreground of his vision. Now, beige, two tiered houses lined the streets. Small, dark blue bird pokemon perch on old telephone poles and white ones with azure stripes on their wings fly high above even them. He sighs as he switches off his game. It’s almost over. Thank God. The truck comes to a stop. The boxes shift threateningly, but don’t tip over. Brendan stands up, stretching his thin, almost spindly body. The music of popping joints rings out.
He sighs, opening up the metal door on the back of the van..
Binding light! He squints as the brightness of the sun assaults his dilated pupils. Moving his hand up to shield his eyes, the boy hops out of the vehicle, looking at his new home. It seems exactly the same as the ones around it. Two floors with a brown color scheme. He’s snapped out of that thought as two humanoid pokemon step around him and into the moving van. One was easy to identify. A gray, muscular one with three crests on his head. A Machoke. But the other one was new to him. A white fuzzy one with big claws and a tuft of red hair on its forehead. It shakes erratically as it picks up a heavy box, struggling a tad more than the more bulky Machoke to bring it into the house. He sees a woman look at the outside of the house approvingly. In her forties, Brendan’s mother had aged gracefully. Her rich, coffee-colored hair has not a speck of gray to be found within it. She turns around and looks at her son.
“Everything looking good?” Brendan grins, staggering over to her.
The mother smiles. “Just like the seller said.. It smells like pine here!” She looks out at the trees growing between each house. It certainly is private. There must be a couple of acres of land around every home here. Brendan sniffs. “Hm. It does,” he agrees, “I’m going to check inside, yeah?”
His mother nods and follows him in.
He slips off his old sneakers at the door, glancing around. His padded footsteps echo through the barren living room. Only a few boxes were already here.
“I mentioned this before, but your father dropped off the boxes the other day before heading into the city to work..” She looks at the boxes.
“You should check your room for anything he may have left you~” She giggles. Brendan gets a strange look on his face. “He already got me a present..” He raises an eyebrow.
His mother just smiles, finding a knife to start opening some boxes.
Shrugging, Brendan, in his socks, finds his way upstairs, into his bedroom. He opens the door. Good grief. His father has found a way to decorate it just as he had his old room. It’s like his very own slice of Johto, right here in Hoenn. His old Meganium plush from when he was a kid sits at his desk, laptop all ready to go. A different bed is here, but with the same sheets. A blue rug, larger than his old one, is laid out in the center of the wooden floor plan, and pushed against the wall is his TV and gaming console, just like before. Posters already plaster the room. A signed photo of renowned Dragon Tamer Lance is framed on his bed stand, right next to a picture of his family visiting the famous Nugget Bridge in Kanto a few years back. His eyes are drawn to the plush. A smile creeps onto his face.
“How the hell did he find this…” The faded green pokemon plush, about a third of the size of a real one, used to stand up on it’s own with a sort of plastic skeleton, but Brendan had apparently hugged it so often that most of it had snapped, leaving the poor flower pokemon to languish like a beached Tentacool. He notices what the grass type’s floppy neck was resting against. He moves its somewhat pained, smiling face aside to see a brand-new Pokenav Plus. That fucking asshole. He KNEW that a PokeGame wasn’t a superb gift for an adult. That was only a red herring for the REAL gift. The device consists of two halves, connected vertically with a hinge that allows for it to be folded up for easy storage, small enough to fit into most pockets. On the bottom, there’s buttons and the top has a screen. He picks up the device and presses the “ON” button. The screen lights up and displays the Devon Corporation logo..
“PLEASE ENTER TRAINER CARD NUMBER AND PIN TO CONTINUE”
Huh.
He flips the screen back down. Well it IS for trainers.. And a trainer Brendan was not. Wait, this gift sucks!
Sighing, he pockets it and walks downstairs.
“So, did you see it? It’s the new one right?” His mother smiles, unpacking a box of fragile dishes into the kitchen.
“Yeah! It’s awesome!” He lies through his teeth.
“Oh, before I forget, your father mentioned that there was another kid around your age next door.” She digs around in another box.
“Ah, so adult?’ He replies smugly before he gets a pair of shoes thrown his way. “Stop wearing those old ones and put the ones I got you on.
Brendan liked the old ones. Stretched in the mold of his feet.. But if mother wills it…
He ties up the Running Shoes onto his feet. “Alrighty. I guess I’m off..”
He opens the door and steps outside, looking around. The tropical sun is bright, almost blindingly so.
“Next door…?”
About a third of a mile away lies another house. She must have meant that one. He makes the walk over there, taking his time. The wildlife is different here. Much more tropical than Johto. Even the birds are more colorful than the ones back home.
He steps up to the door and knocks. The house looks basically identical to his own. A girl with chestnut hair and a red bandana, wearing tight-fitting sporty clothing opens the door after a beat. Brendan sizes her up. Tight ass. Nice hips. Huge tits overflowing out of her top. It takes a lot for him to not drool all over this girl.
“Uh, hey! I’m your new neighbor.” He awkwardly waves. The girl nods. “Yep. My dad and your dad are like, pals or something.” She nods. “Your dad told MY dad to tell you that he has something for you, but my dad told ME that he’s not in his lab right now.”
Brendan scratches his head. “Who’s your dad, again?”
“Does Professor Birch ring a bell?” The young man thinks for a moment.
“Uhh.. nope. But regardless, what would he want with me?” He replies, “And what’s your name? I’m Brendan.”
“Hah. May,” she says, leaning on the doorframe, “he should be maybe a half mile north.” She points. “A big clearing on the edge of town. Can’t miss it.” May affirms with a smirk.
Brendan nods, thanking the girl before walking off in that direction.
After a kind-of-long walk, he hears something like.. Shouting?
A little girl runs up to him.
“There’s a man being attacked by a Pokemon!” She pulls his hand. The girl wears a yellow sundress and a comically large red bow in her hair.
“You gotta help him! I’ll show you!”
Brendan, with really no other choice, outpaces her in his new shoes, locating the screaming.
There was a rather plump man halfway up an oak tree, being harassed by a small gray, canine-looking pokemon. Looks like he dropped his bag
Reminds me of a Houndour.. But fuzzier..
“You! There! Kid!” The bearded man calls out desperately. “Grab a Pokeball from my bag! Help!” Brendan, only slightly panicking, sprints to the bag, choosing one of the three balls in it and chucking it!
Out comes a small, blue fish-thing with orange cheek-spikes. He had seen this one before on a TV program!
“Uh- Mudkip! Use Tackle!” Brendan shouts, pointing at the offending pokemon! The little fish, seeming to know what to do, was already charging at the dark canine. The offending Pokemon is struck with the fish’s small body. Surprised and hurt, the Dark-type quickly retreats into the woods. Brendan smiles, pumping his fist, just kind of stewing in his victory before turning his gaze onto the man clumsily sliding down the body of the tree.
“Thank you, young man. Poochyena are pretty aggressive this time of year.” He pants, grabbing his messenger bag. Mudkip looks up as the humans talk.
Brendan smiles and nods, “I’m glad I could help. Here.” He hands the Water-type’s ball back. The man shakes his head. “Keep it. Walk back with me.”
Brendan blinks. “You mean, like, it’s mine?” He looks down at the happy-looking pokemon. The man nods. “Yep. I’m Professor Birch. I saw how you handled that- you’d make an excellent trainer.” Brendan blinks. “Oh, I met your daughter. Right. My dad was talking about you.” The boy adjusts his white beanie nervously, in silence for a moment, walking with the Professor. “...So you think I have what it takes?”
Birch nods. “Your father seems to think so.” He looks down at the Mudkip following them in-tow. “I’ll get you registered. What do you say, Brendan?” The young man can’t help but smile.
“Yes! I mean- yes, Professor! Thank you!”
It was an open secret that he wanted to be a trainer since a little boy. He already knew the basics- his father being a Gym Leader and all. Maybe the Pokenav was a great gift after all.
The two walk all of the way back, Brendan filling the quiet forest ambience with endless questions about being a trainer, which Birch answers the best he can. He leads him to his lab. The high-tech looking building looks seriously out of place, with a narrow dirt road the only thing connecting it to the rest of the rural town. The door opens with a swipe of a keycard and Brendan is led into the white, sterile lab. A few researchers are working at the moment, so he pipes down, watching them type away at their computers as he’s led to the Professor's office. He wonders how a man who seems so disorganized is so esteemed to lead an entire lab.
After answering a few questions and taking a picture, he was done. He was a trainer. This Mudkip was his starter.
