“…Matilda. But, you can call her… whatever you want.”
Vi paused for effect before saying those last three words. She then looked at the perplexed enforcer, trying and failing laughably to keep some semblance of a poker face, still propped up against the wall, looking back and forth between her and…Pim? She thinks that was what his name was. As she stepped back from the two, she turned as the Enforcer began to start stammering with an obviously fake accent in an attempt to start a conversation. Vi then turned and walked down the hallway, away from the Enforcer and the client, hearing their forced conversation less and less with each step she took. As she did so, making a line for the office at the back, she turned her thoughts to her situation, and to the Enforcer.
She was out, and needed to disappear. But wouldn’t be able to do that without getting rid of that Enforcer first. All Enforcers were the same. And that one was no different, freeing her only to get what she wanted. But they weren’t in the prison, or Piltover, anymore. They were in Zaun. Vi’s world, where Vi could disappear into the city. But she couldn’t do that yet. Not with the Enforcer shadowing her every move.
She thought about taking out the Piltie once they left the Prison, and again in the alley when they changed clothes, only, she couldn’t take the risk that they were being followed by more Enforcers. But after changing clothes and coming to the brothel, it was clear to Vi that the Enforcer was working alone. The Enforcer was obviously in over her head, and didn’t know anything about what really went on at the brothel. If she did, she would never have followed her in so willingly.
If she’d been more suspicious of Vi, she would have tried to listen in on the conversation she was having with Jericho, the burly chef at the street kitchen. Then she would have known that the note Jericho passed to Vi wasn’t a note to show them a place where Vi could find leads…
…it was a note showing Vi the perfect place… to make the piltie disappear.
Vi let a smirk play across her face as she continued her walk down the poorly lit hallway. She ignored the muffled voices of workers and clients wandering and loitering in the corners of the smokey hallway. She reached the door and, turning to look either way to see if anyone was following or watching her, knocked at the door. A raspy voice on the other side told her to enter, and Vi did as she was asked, closing the door behind her. After making sure it was closed, she turned to look at the diminutive figure that was sitting on a cushioned red sofa, smoking a cigarette.
Babette, an old Yordle who, once a hooker a long time ago, was now the owner of the establishment. Her stringy red hair, tied up, blended in with the red cushions and the red walls. The lighting from a lamp on either side lit the room in a crimson hue. Her pasty off white skin was lined with wrinkles caused by time and years of chain smoking. The Yordle wore a smile that Vi could tell was just a mask to cover her true nature. She raised an eyebrow in surprise, indicating to Vi that the yordle recognized her. The expression of surprise seemed to melt almost instantly, replaced by a smile that seemed more one of smug condescension. The Yordle then looked past her, and Vi turned to see where she was looking.
Vi gave a silent nod as the Yordle was motioning behind her to a similar red sofa that was facing hers. Vi stepped back and sat down, sinking into it while looking around at the room. She could tell the room was meant to look luxurious and high-end, but through time or just poor housekeeping, looked tacky and seedy instead. Not unlike its clientele. And its owner, Vi thought to herself. Taking a breath after allowing a few moments of silence to pass, Vi cleared her throat with a snort and spoke up, eager to get down to business:
“Babette, it’s been a while, so… how have things been?”, she said, realizing how disingenuous her words sounded. But Vi knew she had to at least try and sound respectful to the old yordle, as she heard stories of what Babs did to people who she thought disrespected her.
The Yordle let out a toothy grin, but it wasn’t one of warmth, it was one of recognition at knowing Vi wouldn’t have come to her unless she needed something. She took a long drag of her cigarette before slowing exhaling, letting the smoke fill the already hazy atmosphere of the room. She then replied:
“Vi, haven’t seen you in an age. Looks like prison life hasn’t agreed with you,” she said in a mocking tone of fake sympathy.
Vi bristled but shrugged it off, not really caring, and knowing that the old yordle always had a dry sense of humour. Vi decided to get to the point and make her pitch:
“So, I have something for you. And I think you’ll like it” she said, causing Babs to raise her eyebrows in mild interest.
Vi then explained why she was there. How she was released from prison by a Piltie that wanted to use her to help get leads on the bombing. That caused the old yordle to smile. She heard about the bombing through some clients, and had a pretty good idea who was behind it. But if the Pilties really knew who were behind it, and what they were capable of, they’d look the other way. Oh well, Bab’s thought to herself; it was their problem, not hers. Giving a nod, she motioned for Vi to continue, asking what her release from prison, or the Piltie, had to do with her being at the brothel.
That’s when Vi told the brothel owner that the piltie was actually in the brothel at that very moment, and that Vi had left her in the hallway before coming to see her. Babs expression was initially one of surprise followed by mild irritation, as she didn’t want the headache of having to get rid of another piltie, especially an Enforcer. It usually involved multiple pay offs to corrupt Enforcers and other Piltie officials to look the other way. The yordle told Vi as much in a dismissive tone, but Vi replied by letting her in on two important facts that she knew would get Bab’s attention:
“The piltie. The one who’s in your hallway? I think she’s working alone. She didn’t tell anyone where she was going. So if she went missing, no one would think to come looking here…”
This caused Babs to relax somewhat, nodding as it would make it easier. Easier for her to have one of her people just off the Enforcer and dump her out back, or toss her body in the lake for the fish to snack on.
She said as much, and began reaching for the buzzer on her cabinet. The one she normally used when calling one of her workers to do the task. But Vi wasn’t done, and before Babs could reach the buzzer, Vi held up a hand and leaned in, saying in a loud whisper:
“…and she’s hot.” She finished, emphasizing the word ‘hot’, which she knew would interest Babs, given that the yordle was more than just a brothel owner.
That got the yordle’s attention, and piqued her interest in the Piltie. And as Vi had already mentioned to her, the Enforcer, whoever she was, had no idea she’d been made.
Babs took a long drag on her cigarette, letting out a slow exhale and nodded as if to acknowledge that she heard what Vi had said. She then asked in a cautious tone just how ‘hot’ the piltie was, as that was important, the yordle stressed with skeptical eyes as she pointed her cigarette towards Vi, as if to emphasize the seriousness of her question.
Vi smirked in response, and talked about how, when they were changing clothes in the back alley, she sneaked in a few good looks at the Piltie. The yordle said nothing but nodded for her to continue. Vi then said in an almost offhanded manner that if she weren’t trying to get rid of the Piltie so that she could disappear into Zaun, she would have taken the Piltie right there and had her way with her… before, of course, dumping her in the trash where all the other pilties belonged.
The yordle allowed a moment of silence to pass before she let out a cackle and nodded as if convinced, as Vi was normally very picky about who she’d grind her flesh against. Babs then considered the piltie as she rubbed her chin thoughtfully:
Enforcers were trouble. But, this one clearly hadn’t been an Enforcer for very long. If she had been, she’d have known that Enforcers never crossed onto her turf. Every Enforcer that ever came into her brothel looking for trouble would end up disappearing. Sometimes, another Enforcer or two would come looking for them, but she’d just pay them off, or redirect them to another part of the lanes, so that when they got taken care of as well, it could never be traced back to her or any of her people.
As for the Enforcers that she disappeared, the male Enforcers rarely looked good enough to have any value. They’d end up being sliced up and fed to the vermin in the lanes. There was a market for pretty female Enforcers, though. But most of the female ones she’d taken were nothing to look at, so they usually met the same fate as their male counterparts.
But a pretty one…?
Or one that was, how had Vi put it, “hot”?
That was interesting.
Interesting enough to make a few calls…
After a moment of thought, the yordle gave a nod and smiled at Vi. She then turned to a cabinet and handed the released convict a generous wad of cash as thanks for her business before sending her off.
After stuffing the cash in her pocket, Vi turned back before leaving, asking Babs what she had in mind for the Piltie. Babs replied by giving her a malicious smile. Vi smiled back, knowing that even though the yordle hadn’t said anything, Vi knew what that smile meant; that she wouldn’t be seeing that Enforcer again. She gave a wave and pulled her hood up to cover her mop of short red hair. She then tucked her hands in her jacket pockets and walked out the open door, heading out a separate hallway to the exit at the back.
The yordle watched her leave and took a long drag of her cigarette before leaning back and smiling as she exhaled. Business was good. But it was going to get even better. Turning to the cabinet next to the sofa she was on, she leaned across and pressed the buzzer on the cabinet, summoning one of her special workers.
She reached for her special black book next to the buzzer. The one with all her special clients. She then reached into one of the drawers for something else. After getting it, she turned her attention to the arrival of of the worker she called. After a short explanation of the situation, the worker nodded and left in the direction of the Enforcer.
As the worker left, Babs took the book and went to her desk at the far corner of her room. Sitting at her desk, she took out a notepad and began hastily writing notes before tearing the pages off. After finishing her last note, she opened a drawer in the desk and took out a handful of capsules, each the size of a person’s fist. The capsules were a dark red, with gold trim and gold caps.
Smiling excitedly, she unscrewed the tops of each capsule and placed a rolled up page in each one before screwing the top back on. She then swivelled in her chair to face the wall behind her. A wall that had a large picture frame resting on the floor. She pushed it aside with one hand, revealing a pneumatic tube in the wall. The way that messages were delivered between citizens in Piltover and Zaun. Once something was put in a tube, it would get to any destination within an hour. Sometimes it took only a matter of minutes.
That’s how long a message would normally take to reach one of her special clients.
Putting each one in a tube, she cackled at the sound each capsule made as it was sucked into the tube. She then moved the picture frame back into its original place so that it covered the tube. After doing so, the yordle let out a gleeful sigh, clapping her hands in excitement as she turned and made her way to the doorway. The messages would reach her special clients within the hour. And when then did, she knew they’d be on their way.
Now all she had to do was get everything, including the Enforcer, ready.
