  • W00t! Chapter 10! We just keep getting closer and closer to my unknown ending that I haven’t figured out yet.

Many thanks to AkuRokulove, Endoresu, and Jediempress for reviewing the last chapter. More thanks to Jediempress for giving me a name for our lovely rebel group. This chapter goes out to her.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

“Well, it’s later. Care to tell me what the hell is going on?” Riku was forcibly snug in a sleeping bag by an overly worried Hosep who was lashing their tent shut for the night. He would admit that he hadn’t been able to get off the horse, much less walk to the tent but this was a bit much.

He huffed to himself, raking his hand through his short mop of hair. I can’t wait for this war to be over just so I can grow it out again. Since he knew it would be pointless to get up, he had tried twice already and fell on his rump, Riku settled for glaring. Apparently his ‘if you don’t give me answers RIGHT NOW I will fuck you up beyond all recognition’ glare still worked, as once it was directed at Hosep, the scout plopped down on the ground by him.

“Tell me what the hell happened back there,” he ordered coldly. His partner blanched at his tone but really it was justified. Riku had woken up after having just recovered from a Heartless attack. He used his new magic to heal himself and Hosep. Then he had to mount up and ride for two hours to get to a safer location. Following that and the three hour wait, he then had to force his not fully recovered magics into healing someone else of blight, aided in staging a rebellion against the company captain and then rode for another three hours. He was tired, sore, and hungry and wanted nothing more than to sleep for a few days. After I get some answers.

“Our squad has sworn fealty to you and Tik’va. They will only take orders from either of you or from Jamel since they also swore to her officers. They are all risking their lives to keep you safe and away from Fallon.” He moved closer, crimson eyes not meeting his own teal ones. Instead they found a fascination with the tent floor as he carried on. “Fallon is a heartless bastard, no pun intended. He would take you apart an inch at a time to see how you work instead of just asking you. We all know this, and we know it very well. So we’ll abandon our posts to follow you and try to finish this.”

Well that was a fine hello! No wonder Tik’va was being so adamant about making tracks. “So what was that pledge about? I could feel the magic but . . .”

Hosep cut him off, eyes wide. “You could feel it?” Riku nodded, wondering what was going to make he an oddity this time. “Never mind. It’s not important right now. All you need to know is that none of them can betray you until they are dead, we are disbanded, or you release them from their bond.” He paused, then added an afterthought. “Well, you or Tik’va probably. To be honest, most places have such pledges banned because of how easily they can be abused. To have so many is an honor as well as a burden.”

He slumped forward, cradling his head in his hands. This was just too much to believe. Why does everything have to happen to me? Oh wait, I’m Kingdom Heart’s Champion, with definite capital letters to show my worth to the world. And no doubt Kingdom Hearts was going to want another chat tonight. Riku groaned at that notion, feeling Hosep pressed closer to see if he could be of any aid.

“Can we finish this discussion in the morning?” he begged. His head was starting to pound from all that had happened that day and his mind was such a muddled mess, Riku was sure they would just end up talking in circles without solving anything. The lieutenant smiled, pressing a kiss to his temple.

“Of course diji’ri.” He helped Riku to lay down and escape some of the confines of the blankets. Hosep hadn’t even extinguished the light before he was out for the night.

“Why do affairs become horribly muddled when you are present?” Riku threw one arm over his eyes, not wanting to acknowledge the voice that was keeping him from real dreams. “Does it follow you?” Riku responded this time with a rude gesture. The voice laughed and pulled back his arm, giving him full view of a clone Sora and an open ocean sky. “I speak only in jest. I did not mean to offend.” With a firm grip on his limb it pulled him into a sitting position, smiling all the while. “You have questions for me?”

The youth glared as he reclaimed his arm and let himself flop back down on the sand. I really, REALLY do not want to be dealing with this right now. He wanted sleep. Scratch that. He wanted real sleep with real dreams that didn’t make a lick of sense and would be forgotten once daybreak came around. He didn’t want this half dream that made too much sense and would be recalled with crystal clarity.

“I know you are weary my Champion but we have much to discuss and I’m afraid time is short.” Those gloved hands pulled him up again and this time got him on his feet, helping him to stagger to a seat by the waterfall.

Riku wasn’t shocked to be back on Play Island or that Kingdom Hearts looked like Sora again. That seemed to be the set up of choice for their talks. He was a bit concerned at the huge feathers he noticed lodged in one palm tree but didn’t mention it. If it were something he should know, he would know. For now he slumped like he had before in the tent, his exhaustion penetrating right to his bones. He could hear Kingdom Hearts taking a seat as well, but not before lying on hand on his shoulder and restoring some of his magic.

“You are getting very close to the heart of the world you are on.” That captured his attention and had him whip his head around to face Kingdom Hearts properly. “If you can lock that and destroy the leading Heartless, that should be the end of it.” Something was nagging at the back of his mind that there was more. “That is not all I’m afraid. Do you recall mention of people that willingly joined with a Heartless?”

Crap. Riku had totally forgotten about them. He grimaced, nodding that he did remember them. Granted, he had only seen one from a great distance and had never engaged one either. Kingdom Hearts frowned, its eyes flashing coldly.

“Only consider them to be Heartless. They cannot be cured like your friend with blight. Nor can they be ‘saved’ so do not try. They bar your path to the heart of the world. Their numbers are few though. There are perhaps ten at most, as many are not strong enough to bear the pain of transition. You team will be more than able to remove them.”

“My team? Because of the pledges?” he hazarded. Kingdom Hearts nodded gravely. He ran one hand though his hair in agitation, feeling overwhelmed by it all. “I don’t like having so many lives in my hands,” he confessed. “But they must have faith in me to have made their pledges right?” He received a nod in way of reply. He stewed over that for a bit, letting it tumble in his brain. “Guess we ought to have a name too?” Kingdom Hearts only grinned, not offering anything in the least on that front but plenty on another.

“Anything else you wish to discuss tonight? Or should I allow you to return to the arms of your beloved?” it asked, that simple grin becoming a shit eating one. Riku gaped for a moment before he found his tongue again.

“Beloved?” A nod. “You mean Hosep?” Another nod. Well, all things considered, that in fact was an accurate assessment of their relationship. But do I feel the same?

“He is good for you,” it insisted. “Trust your heart as it cannot lead you astray. And when the time comes for you to go, he is welcome to travel as well. Tell him I said so.”

“Wait, travel with me? Where?” Riku demanded, leaping to his feet. Kingdom Hearts chuckled at his reaction, rising smoothly to press one hand over Riku’s heart.

“Why, on your next adventure of course!” Nothing more could be said as he was sent back to his body. He woke with a jolt, feeling someone against him in the dark of the tent. He waited for his heart to slow as he remained prone in the tangle of blankets and limbs.

Why the hell can’t I ever get a straight answer from him? He punched his sleeping bag in anger, feeling as though he had been cheated out of answers. But as he considered their conversation, he had been given quite a few in return. New information about magic was present in his head as well. Hushed muttering at his back made him turn, seeing Hosep spooned against him. His eyes peaked open, seeing that Riku was awake.

“Problem?” he asked, moving to look at Riku properly.

“Maybe.” The scout moved to sit up, pulling Riku with him. Riku found it hard to match his gaze as he fiddled with a corner of blanket. He became hyper aware of the fact that neither of them wore shirts to bed. They did wear full pants but Hosep’s were riding dangerously low on his hips and that made Riku a bit self-conscious. Finally, in a burst of courage he blurted out his question. “What am I to you?”

The lieutenant looked stunned to be given such a weighty inquest at such a late hour. To his credit though he did not bolt or fill the growing silence with empty words of delay. He choose actions over words, cupping Riku’s fidgeting hands in his own.

“Trustworthy. Strong. Honorable.” He locked gazes with Riku as he brought up one hand to let his fingers drift over Riku’s cheek. “Precious.” Teal eyes flared, not fully believing what he was hearing. That seemed to decide something for Hosep. He moved away to their packs, pulling out the slim book from before. “Read this. If you can still stand the sight of me we can talk again.”

Riku accepted it like it was a holy relic. The scout did not say a word, his face blank as he pulled out an additional blanket and made himself a new bed a few feet away. It did not take long and soon he at least appeared to have fallen back asleep. Puzzled but wanting to trust him, Riku dug for a clean shirt to ward off the chill of the air. Carefully he found their lantern as well. With it lit and a spot by the entrance, he pulled back the front cover.

Day one: As per her orders, I have taken to observing the new arrival. His calls himself Riku and claims to be from another world. That to me is not so shocking as I too am from another world. What is shocking is his eyes. He has seen things no mortal should ever see.

What the hell? This was a journal! About himself!

    Written by Hosep?

Riku felt his gut clench for a moment before he remembered that Hosep had willingly given this to him to read. He idly flipped through the pages, seeing that entries became longer and longer as time went on. So he had been under observation this entire time? Or only a fraction of it?

Only one way to find out. Returning to the first page, he snagged a blanket to throw over his shoulders and began to read.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

With a light thump the book was shut, the fingers of one hand drumming out a staccato rhythm that only made sense to the drummer. Riku shifted a bit, feeling his neck and back protest to having been immobile for so long. The blonde haired man was factually sleeping when he had finished reading the book. Riku watched him for a bit as he contemplated.

It had been . . . interesting? No. It had been enlightening to read about himself from the view of another. Add in al that he had learned and Hosep and it had been very enlightening indeed.

He chewed on his lower lip, not sure what to make of it all. It had become very clear that Hosep cared for him. It also allowed Riku to reflect on his own emotional turmoil and see that he felt the same. Hosep had always been there for him from day one and had somehow, despite Riku’s reluctance to allow it, wormed his way into his heart.

The obvious first and foremost order of business was to get back to Hosep for keeping this from him. He had finished following orders after a few weeks. Granted there were things in there that were personal but still. He should have ‘fessed up sooner.

Second is to actually get some sleep. He smirked, taking a peak outside. It was still fully dark without any hint of morning. Good. He nodded as he collected his gear. He did deter from his tasks to scribble a message in the back of the book after the last entry, leaving a bookmark so hopefully it would be noticed. Soon he had all that was his and was making his way to Tik’va’s tent. She had presented him with an offer that he could come and crash with her for any reason at all.

    Now was a good reason.

Let Hosep think on that when he wakes up.
