It made my day getting a review, inspiring me to write this and the next chapter. Ratings and reviews are fuel to a writer. I have always been a fan of the ability to romance Alistair, and it’s hard for me not to during replays of the game. Dragon Age Origins is my favorite storyline of the DA franchise. Let us hope that Bioware keeps its promise and DA3 will be a mix of the good of both DA:O and DA2. Cross your fingers and maybe Alistair will pop up again with his witty self. For those who have read this far, I hope you are and continue to enjoy this story. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. On our way to the Orzammar, our party got a bit sidetracked trying to find a Golem that belonged to a control rod. So in that way, we gained an additional oddity to our group of a golem that had free will, unlike all others, named Shale. I have to admit it’s amusing how much it ruffles Rose, when Shale calls her “it”. Walking into Orzammar with a golem was a sight for the dwarves living there; I think it helped in their acceptance of us. It is of course our luck that when we come to the dwarves for help against a blight, we are caught up in their problems that could lead to civil war. With Harrowmont’s promise of help if we could get support of a paragon, we went to trudge forward in the deep roads. That’s when we met up with Oghren, Branka’s drunken crude dwarven husband. I swear that Rose must have the inability to say no to lost causes because now as we delve deep into the deep roads, Oghren has come along with us singing a drinking song in the dark hellish caverns as we go further underground. So this is where Grey Wardens come to die? When the taint is about to finish them, they go down fighting here where the warm pure light of the sun cannot reach them, isolated from the good of the world. My heart was going cold, and all I want to do is finish this and never go underground again. I could see that at least Bucky felt the same way, not at perky and hyper as usual, whimpering occasionally as he looked around. Mabari have good sense. “Warden, stop here for a moment. These chips in the columns look intentional, something Branka used to do to see the composition of the stone. Give me a chance to look around and maybe we can pick up her trail.” Oghren said quite lucidly for someone whose demeanor was constantly intoxicated. Rose nodded and replied, “Oghren you scout around for signs and Leliana you go with him. Morrigan and Sten, take watch ahead at the bend in the tunnel, We don’t know what is down here, but there has to be darkspawn somewhere.” Everyone naturally fanned out, leaving no direction unguarded. I held the hilt of my sword as if it held my life force. Rose walked over to me taking in the sight of the former glory of Caridin’s cross. She spoke in a whisper. “You would think it would be demons that unnerved me. No its being underground with unknown numbers of darkspawn hiding in the shadows. I am scared, knowing that this is where many Grey Wardens have died, but I am also angry that the darkspawn have taken so many of us away here and at Ostagar. “She placed her hand over mine that gripped my sword. “Today Alistair, let us take some of them down before we say hello to the sky again.” I looked at her hand, so small and gloved in leather. Slowly looking up, I saw how fierce her armor made her look, how her hair tied behind her head made her tattoos show prominently, tattoos that added to the look of fiery determined anger in her face. Looking into her green eyes, they were comparable to emeralds whose edges were sharp as blades. That this was the maiden that I had tucked into bed at the Spoiled Princess was almost impossible to believe. Looking into her eyes, I could tell as she could with me the second we both felt the presence in the blood. An overwhelming presence of darkness, calling out like a siren drawing sailors to their doom, and we both whispered it before we yelled in unison, “Darkspawn.” They came from every direction like a swarm. Rose drew her bow, taking shots with fluid precision taking down soldiers in the front, so the other had to stumble over the bodies. One jumped over to try to stab her upon landing and the arrow went straight through its neck, splattering blood all over her. My sword was drawn and parrying the grotesque creature’s sword blows, feigning left, I fooled it and my sword went for the opening. The sword cut cleanly through the neck, and the head tumbled to the side. Darkspawn in some ways are like rotting corpses, it’s easier to dismember them with blades than with other living things. Several charged straight towards me and from my right. Using my shield, I bashed the ones ahead of me, while I cut at the darkspawn beside me. Suddenly fire swept over the darkspawn to my right, turning some into lumps of molten flesh. Looking over for a moment, I saw Morrigan smile rather impishly. “I am rather fond of Rose, and she would be upset if anything permanently bad happened to you. You will just owe me later.” She said as transformed into a bear and began to maul the darkspawn nearby. Using her mouth, she ripped off an arm and looked towards me. Dear Maker, that woman is horrifying. I continued to beat back the darkspawn that were around me, using my shield to knock them down or stun them, to finish them off with a downward stab into their black hearts. The flow of darkspawn started to ebb. Oghren and Sten fought back to back behind me. Oghren’s double edged battle axe swept through the darkspawn ahead, cutting them from their legs. Sten would drive his long claymore like sword through the crowd, usually driving it through two darkspawn at once. Shale threw boulders at the oncoming darkspawn from an eastern entrance. Shale yelled out happily, “Squishing these under me is better that squishing evil birds! It does not know how happy this makes me.” As I worked my way through the ever decreasing darkspawn, I saw Rose and Bucky up ahead. Rose moved her two blades as though cutting an x. The darkspawn would stumble back as organs failed to stay in his chest, and at that moment Bucky would tackle the creature and rip apart the exposed intestines. As Bucky went to finishing off another, an Ogre came forward, stomping on darkspawn in its way. As the Ogre went to strike Bucky with his large hammer, Rose caught sight of it and pushed the Mabari out of the way, taking the blow to the torso and flying across the room. My mind went to an automatic response. Caridin’s cross was empty, there was no one else there save for the Ogre, and he was mine. Rushing forward, I ducked under the swing of the Ogre’s hammar, slashing my blade across its hip. As it screamed and reached for me, I swept to its other side and stabbed it in the leg. My sword logged in its leg, would not come freely. That’s when I spied Rose’s family sword on the ground. As the Ogre went to grab me, I dove for the sword. My hand wrapped around the hilt and I scrambled up. I took two steps backwards and then ran full throttle at the beast, launching off a pile of dead darkspawn bodies, driving the sword into the Ogre’s neck as I fell to earth. My blow drew the Ogre to the ground, my rage still fueled; I withdrew the sword and drove the blade through the creature’s eye socket. I withdrew the sword again to make for another blow, there was nothing else that existed in my world at that moment. I brought the sword high above my head, as I heard a voice in the distance saying how something was over. I drove the blade down through the Ogre’s thick neck, unable to completely sever its head. I felt a touch to my shoulder, something that could not happen if nothing else existed in Caridin’s cross. Reality fell back into place. Leliana held her hand to my shoulder and repeated, “Alistair, it’s over, they are all dead.” Holding onto the sword, I hurried to where Wynne crouched. She was chanting incantations over Rose’s body, causing a white glow to spread over her form. Rose lay so still. Wynne paused and as I was about to say why was she stopping she replied, “I have healed the broken ribs and punctured lung, but it will take a moment for her to awaken. I cannot attempt to heal any of her more minor injuries without taking a moment to recover.” With that, she walked over to the other members of the party repeating her statement and telling them to give Rose space. Everyone still quietly circled around Rose, if at least to act as guard. Bucky walked over and laid his head upon her stomach and whined pitifully. I couldn’t move from my spot, crouched as I was. My hand on reflex reached for the strand of hair that lay plastered to her face. All I wanted in the world at that moment was to see her green eyes open again. I started to think that Wynne was mistaken, that she wouldn’t wake from this deathlike state. I lifted her torso up, and cradled her head with my arm. I felt no breath come from her nose or lips. I whispered quietly, “Dear Maker, please wake her, don’t take her away.” I moved my lips close to her ear and whispered softly as a tear made it to my eye, “Dear heart, stay here with me. If you leave, you take my heart with you.” I held her and time felt as though it stood still. Suddenly, time came into focus as Rose gasped for air and leaned forward to sit up. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Leliana rushed forward and hugged Rose. “Leliana, I am ok now. No need to worry. I am sorry I scared all of you.” Rose said as she looked around at all of us. Bucky in a mood to break up the somber mood, went to licking her face causing her to giggle. “I think it is best we move forward and find a place to rest for a few hours. Rose you still have many wounds that will slow you down in battle.” said Wynne. “Ok everyone, you heard Wynne let us find somewhere relatively safe to hunker down for a few hours.” Rose replied. Rose got up from the ground slowly, beating off the dirt. I rose and handed her sword into her hands silently. She mouthed, “Thank you” and wiped the blood from the sword before sheathing it. We picked over the 30 darkspawn bodies for arrow retrieval and anything of use. With that, we went in search of a safe haven in this rim of hell.
