Orange slowly encroached on the horizon, the first signs of morning. The city was still sleeping, only a few residents up and about that early. The guards were trying their best not to fall asleep standing up, a skill most of them learned on accident while on duty. The occasional adventurer passed by, none deserving of a second glance to the weary soldiers. A human in minimal clothing going for a jog. A refined looking mage strutting about. A hunter playing with her pet. A adolescent boy walking by. It was all the same to them. Altius walked along the streets, less focused on his surroundings than normal. Which meant he tripped quite often on the cobblestones. He glanced toward the sky, seeing the half-moon still hanging on the other side of the sky, running from the sun’s light. A few clouds hovered over the stars that could outshine the morning rays, but for the most part the sky was clear. He marveled at how it seemed to reflect his thoughts. Cobblestone turned to dirt, dirt to grass. Paying just enough attention not to walk into the pond, Altius trekked back to his house. He reached up and over his head, feeling the handle of his blade. He marveled at how worn and comfortable it had become in so short a time. He thought about pulling off of his back just to hold it, but let his hand drop. No need in making anyone who was watching him nervous. Among the many things Elara had taught him, that was one of them. He wasn’t used to thinking about being watched, but it was so fresh in his mind he couldn’t help but. He stumbled slightly on a small hole in the grass, catching himself before he fell. Still walking, he glanced casually over his shoulder, looking back at the city. The morning sun hadn’t quite it yet, but the city was still as grand as it ever was. Spotting the source of his unease, he turned back toward his house, resting his hand on the door knob for a moment before turning it. He stepped inside quietly, closing the door as softly as he could. Gus was sleeping in a chair over by the fire, but at the sound of the handle turning, he raised his head, eyeing Altius. He chuckled, walking over to the large cat. “It must not be fun, being such a light sleeper.” He said, scratching Gus behind the ears. Content it was a friend who had entered, Gus set his head back down, closing his eyes. He purred for a moment while Altius scratched him, before it became hard to tell the purrs from snoring. Altius smiled, standing back up straight. Looking around the room, he found it the same as when he had left. He placed a hand on the top of the chair, realizing it had only been a day since he left. It felt like much longer. Setting his sword down and leaning it against the chair, he walked to his room, opening the door silently. It was dark; the shades had been pulled over the window. Small cracks of light came around it, but not enough to make much visible. Pulling off his shirt, he set it on the dresser in the corner, deciding to leave his pants on for the time being. Moving toward his bed, he reached his hand out to feel where it started, feeling his sheets. He pulled them back slightly turning to sit on the edge of his bed. Lifting his legs onto it, he rolled over, instantly feeling soft, warm skin. He paused, his knee still brushing the skin of whoever was laying in front of him. It didn’t seem to wake them up, but he was surprised he didn’t hear them breathing beforehand. It was light and easy breaths, hinting that they were still sound asleep. Reaching a hand out hesitantly, he touched their back, realizing the figure was feminine, and most likely naked. He blushed slightly, squinting his eyes in an attempt to adjust them to the darkness. Slowly regaining his vision, he saw an ear poking off of the person’s head, showing that it was an elf. Putting the light purple skin and dark purple hair together, he realized that it was Emyth. Reaching around her, he rubbed her tummy briefly before trying to edge out of the bed. He felt her grab his hand, jerking him to a stop. She sighed, holding him by his forearm. He sat as still as he could for several minutes, only feeling safe to move again when her breathing had become easy and light. He weighed his options, thinking that if nothing else, pulling out of her grip would wake her up. And he was sure she spent the day worrying over him, she needed all the sleep she could get. Making up his mind, he edged closer to her, feeling her warmth against his chest. Wrapping his arm snugly around her midsection, he rested his head behind hers, closing his eyes. He would have some explaining to do when she woke up, but at the moment, he was too tired to care. Altius wasn’t really sure when his dream ended and where reality began. He was running, running. That’s all it was. Running. Falling, then. Landing. Stopping, and laying down. He was tired. So tired. Too tired to see. He could hear voices around him, voices of his friends, of enemies he didn’t know, but he knew they were enemies. He fought to undo their work. They fought to undo the world. The world. Azeroth. A shining sphere, full of magic, things to see, people. Creatures. Another world. Earth? That was Earth, what he saw. Or heard, he wasn’t sure at that point. His eyes snapped open. He was laying alone, in his bed, arm outstretched to the opposite end. He sat up, looking around his room. The shades were still pulled over the window, but the cracks of light around it had become much more defined, allowing him to see easily. He pulled off the sheets, swinging his legs to the floor. He didn’t feel groggy at all, which was strange. He wished he knew how long he had been asleep. Opening the door slightly, he peered around the living room, not spotting anyone. He swung the door wide open, relieved. He didn’t feel like putting his shirt on anyways. “So, you’re awake.” The floorboards squeaked at his sudden stop. He looked toward the table, where Emyth was sitting facing away from him. She didn’t sound irritated, but he couldn’t see her face to confirm that. He stood up straight, laughing nervously. “Yea, heh.” He didn’t quite know what else to say. He stood there awkwardly for several seconds, glancing back at his door. “I-” “What, aren’t you going to join me for lunch?” Emyth asked, turning to face him. She was smiling. “Eh, I’ll just go put a shirt on first…” Altius said, edging toward his door. Emyth waved a hand, turning back toward the table. “Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m not big on table manners.” With one last look at his door, Altius shrugged, his shyness fading away. “Alright, then.” He walked over to the table, taking a seat beside her, where there was already a plate on the table. On it was a simple sandwich. Emyth’s plate had an identical sandwich, but it was already half gone. She took another bite before speaking again. “So, where were you all of yesterday?” She said, resting her chin on her hand, looking at him. “You want the long version or the short version?” Altius asked, taking a bite of his sandwich. It tasted like ham and cheese. “How about the short one first.” Emyth said, grinning. Swallowing, Altius brushed the crumbs from his mouth. “Alright, well, I was training with Arthur and this interesting person came up and offered to train me, and her training lasted all night.” “Interesting person hm?” Emyth said, raising an eyebrow. “Interesting how?” “Just… interesting, I guess. Everything about her seemed strange, how she acted, how she looked, her magic…” Altius said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “Her name was Elara.” “Can’t say I know the name… was she a human?” “You know… I can’t actually say for sure. She seemed like it, but there was never anything that could confirm it. She wore a hood, it covered her ears, an obvious sign. I’ll just say she looked like a human.” “And how did she act that was strange?” “Well…” Altius said, trying to gather his thoughts. It seemed to be harder to think about her the longer he was away from her. “She seemed… to know everything, and seemed to know me. I’ve never met her before, though.” “Sounds pretty interesting, yea…” Emyth said, fingering the crumbs on her plate. “What did she teach you?” “A lot, actually. Most of it had to do with fighting magic users… but a lot of tactics for combat, too.” “You said her magic was weird too, didn’t you?” “Oh yea!” he said, remembering the unique white magic. “It was white, but it really had no telltale signs of any class of magic I’ve seen. It didn’t have the common sound or purple color of arcane magic, but it definitely wasn’t holy…” Flicking a crumb at Altius, Emyth stretched in her chair, letting her arms fall to her sides. “Maybe it was discipline? Did she look like a priest?” “No, it definitely wasn’t priest magic, I would have recognized it. I’ve gotten used to my dad’s magic, it didn’t feel anything like his.” “Hm..” Emyth stood up, pushing her chair away from the table. Walking a few steps away, she paused, looking at the ceiling. “Do you think you’re ready?” “To… what?” “To chase down Tylron.” She said, still facing away from him. “Well, I…” He hesitated, rolling his arm. “I think I am. I know that if I spend any more time training, he’ll be gone.” Emyth turned to face him, raising an eyebrow. “How do you know that?” “My- Elara told me.” He said, passing off his stutter as a mistake. Emyth eyed him curiously. He glanced off to the side, looking at the door. “I need to go as soon as possible, or I’ll lose him.” “You will find him, I’m sure of that.” Emyth said, walking toward him. Placing her hands on his shoulders, she looked at him with affection. “But you can’t go yet, at least wait until your mother gets home.” Altius nodded, letting his head hang to the ground. “I’m scared.” She moved her hands around his head, pressing him against her chest, softly stroking his hair. “I know.” He could feel the warmth from her skin even through her clothes. Her heartbeat seemed a little faster than normal, but it was reassuring, as if she were telling him over and over again that everything would be alright, that he could do it. He closed his eyes, letting her hold him.
