Starr stretched lazily, yawning as she slowly began waking up. For long moments, she simply lay with her eyes closed, enjoying the warmth and softness of the bed. Being underground in the caverns, there was no source of natural light and she idly wondered whether it was daytime yet. Turning over on her side, she saw a second pillow on the bed, lightly compressed in the middle, showing it had been recently used. The memories of the previous night came flooding back vividly and she cursed as she bolted upright.
Swiftly her gaze travelled the room. He wasn’t there. Her face flamed red. She’d meant to wake up before him. Instead, he’d woken before her. As she looked more closely around the room, she noticed that all of the things Aleyel had laid out were nowhere to be seen. He’d picked them up and… clearly had put them elsewhere.
Standing up, she searched the chambers. Empty. She tried the door and found that it swung open easily. The racks full of distasteful clothing had been shifted around and were no longer in the center of the room. She searched the rest of the quarters to no avail. Sitting down in one of the large overstuffed chairs, she wondered where he’d gone.

Meanwhile, Shin paced swiftly behind Nathavin through the dense forest, listening closely as Nathavin led his forces toward the light elven lands where they butted up against the territory of Gludio. A large group of humans, aided by the dwarves, had shielded a considerable number of light elves and were now causing problems. The problem had started off small but gained steam as more and more humans came to help. The band of warriors were a rogue group that was gaining numbers by the day. A small nuisance was threatening to become a complication.
The rogue band was led by former military officers from various kingdoms and they had managed to get the best of several platoons. And it was Nathavin’s responsibility to remove that threat. Nathavin gave his orders swiftly and his officers moved to carry out those orders. However, he held his bow out lightly, blocking Shin’s path.
Looking at Shin directly, he asked him curtly, his ranking as a high level commanding officer on full display. “Considering your current situation, will you be able to kill the light elves? I need to know now. Thiefiell has made it clear to me. There are to be no survivors.”
Shin nodded curtly. “Understood.”
Nathavin eyed his friend. “I mean it. No mercy. For any of them.” He’d protected Shin once, he couldn’t do it twice.
Shin nodded again, this time wordlessly.
The attack on the make-shift fortress was vicious. Within the first few seconds, several humans lay dead, arrows in their chests. But after that, they put up a considerable fight, and several dark elves died. As Shin looked up from his latest victim, he just barely had time to dodge the spell of a light elven spell singer. Icy shards flew past him, embedding themselves in a nearby tree. Closing the distance rapidly, Shin dodged the subsequent attacks and lunged at the elf, dagger poised to kill.
The elf raised his staff and blocked the dagger. He quickly thrust the end of the staff toward the dark elf’s stomach but missed as Shin dodged out of the way. As Shin reached in to try to plunge the dagger into his flesh, the mage hooked his foot behind Shin’s and attempted to pull him off balance. But Shin countered quickly, using that same foot and pulled it back, throwing the mage face first onto the ground. The mage reacted on instinct and cast a devastatingly fast spell. As soon as he sensed his opponent step away, he regained his feet rapidly.
Shin felt the burn of a spell that he couldn’t avoid and grimaced as it seared his flesh. A bright bolt of lightening blazed down from the sky. As it connected with him, he grunted in pain as the energy caused his muscles to seize painfully. Lashing out despite the immense pain, he heard the elf yelp in distress as his dagger met resistance. The sound of cloth ripping reached his ears.
Breaking apart, the two glared at one another. The light elf was winded, and badly wounded. Blood poured from the wound Shin’d inflicted. As he opened his mouth to cast another spell, Shin darted forward quickly and thrust the dagger deep into the elf’s chest with a twisting motion. The elf slid wordlessly to the ground as Shin yanked the dagger free.
It took them only two hours to destroy the rag-tag faction. But it cost them dearly, almost a third of the platoon had died, three were severely wounded. In all, twenty light elves lost their lives. Mostly to Nathavin, but Shin had killed the rest. They suspected that there had been more, but some had managed to escape further into the human territory. Nathavin hadn’t been cleared to chase them down in Gludio territory, so he didn’t bother to verify the suspicion. But the fact that even twenty had been there gave him hope though. If twenty had been outside the village when the dark elves had attacked, maybe there were more in hiding elsewhere in the world.
Silently, they set fire to the cobbled together fortress and the bodies of the humans and dwarves. As the fire roared behind him, Nathavin stared at the bodies of the twenty elves that he’d ordered to be laid together, spared from the fire. Thiefiell had ordered that they be displayed for all to see.
Nathavin disagreed.
It was dishonorable, and he had no intentions of obeying that order.
Shin stood quietly, apart from the rest of the platoon. “Bury them. It is their custom.”
Nathavin glanced at his men. They were balking and he ordered swiftly. “You heard him. Bury them.”
One by one, the graves were dug, using whatever shovels they could find that had managed to escape the flames. It was painstakingly slow, but it was eventually done. Once the graves were covered over, Shin approached them. Reaching into his satchel, he pulled out a bundled cloth and gently unwrapped it. Inside lay an assortment of seeds. Approaching the graves, he let a few of the seeds drop onto each one. After he’d placed seeds over the last grave, he simply gazed over them for a moment.
Sensing that Shin had finished whatever he’d set out to do, Nathavin spoke somberly to the rest of his squad. “I hope none of you feel pride over what we’ve done here today. We’ve done nothing to be prideful about except bury the bodies of those who humbled themselves and asked for our help to defeat a mutual enemy, and we betrayed them. We owed them a burial. They were buried before their time. We snuffed out their lives needlessly.” His voice filled with disgust as he muttered darkly. “Move out.”
Shin stood still as the others began making their way back to their lands, his eyes fixed on the graves. The seeds had been given to him by a sainted light elven healer. The seeds were blessed with holy magic. After everyone had filed away, and he was sure not even Nathavin was watching, he uttered the phrase he’d been taught by that healer.
Green tendrils sprouted from the seeds, spreading over the graves. Grass and clover sprung up, creating a veritable carpet around the entire area, radiating out from the graves. Wildflowers of various hues and shades sprinkled the area. And in the center of all the graves, a small tree grew from the ground and Shin felt a sense of calm overtake him, an effect that the sainted healer had said could only be felt by those who were friends of the light elves. Perhaps in time, the small sapling would grow to enormous size like it’s parent tree that had resided at the heart of the light elven village.
With a sigh, he turned and made his way back to the squad. If a sapling, sprouted from a seed of their revered tree could acknowledge and accept him as a friend of the light elves, why couldn’t she? Solemnly, he caught up to the squad, taking position at the rear.
He tried telling himself that it shouldn’t matter to him, and that she’d made her choice. She didn’t want his help. Nathavin thought him a fool for keeping her. He didn’t say it, but he didn’t have to.
As they traveled back, they came upon Micardrin’s platoon. Micardrin, reprehensible by even dark elven standards, had taken several light elves prisoner. As he and Nathavin spoke, Shin observed the light elves. Two of the three appeared to be near death, barely able to stand on their own. When one swayed unsteadily, Micardrin’s second in command kept the male from falling by violently pulling him back upright by his hair. The elf that had the least visible injuries tried to intervene, but got backhanded for his efforts.
His gaze turned toward the female and his jaw clenched. Her right eye was swollen shut and blood caked her long hair. And there was no question she feared the spectral masters summons that guarded her.
Repressing a disgusted sigh, he looked away. He couldn’t help them. And the one he could help, didn’t want it.
