Chapter
11: A New Adventure
More elaborate gifts arrived for
Alyssa, always with coda flowers. A pair of gloves, a ring, exquisite shoes,
enchanted cloaks… they arrived almost like clockwork each week. Whoever was
delivering them was indeed a master at stealth, as no one ever saw anyone enter
or exit. Furthermore, the presence of the Redoran guard proved to be less a
deterrent than Edwinna had hoped, although she noted that nothing new was
reported missing from the guild. In fact, Alyssa’s admirer seemed to have a
knack for finding misplaced items belonging to many of the guild members and
returning them to their proper owners. Furthermore, this mysterious persona
hadn’t taken long to realize that Alyssa had switched quarters, thus the gifts
were always delivered to the proper room. Far from being fearful of his
visits, the guild members now looked forward to them. It seemed a harmless
enough mystery. However, it still bothered Alyssa and Edwinna both that this
mysterious “guardian admirer” remained completely anonymous. Speculation
around the guild was that he was too old or ugly to show his face, but had seen
Alyssa from afar and fallen madly in love with her yet felt he could never be
good enough for her. Others speculated that he was just a fellow mage with a
flare for the dramatic, still others that he was a reformed thief wishing to
atone for the error of his ways. Some even speculated that the admirer was not
a “him” at all but instead a “her” who was unsure of Alyssa’s romantic gender
preference. But the truth was that no one knew for sure. It was all
speculation. Alyssa often watched the faces of the people surrounding her
closely when she went out, searching for a clue. But she never found one.
Since Edwinna and Anarenen had
moved in together, the guild members had all noticed, with some amusement, that
they were both much less likely to leave their quarters. This lead to some
awkward situations where one of the pair was needed for assistance but both
were busy upstairs. Everyone was afraid to just knock on the door despite
Edwinna’s insistence that it was perfectly fine and nothing whatsoever was
going on. They were just “working” and it was quieter upstairs. Alyssa found
it adorable. Anarenen had become absolutely radiant since the room switch, and
even Edwinna had taken on a strangely pleasant glow to her features although
she tried hard to conceal it. Alyssa wondered how much longer it would be
before they publicly announced their relationship. Both, however, seemed
loathe to discuss the subject. However, the pleased smile on the Altmer’s face
every time he was questioned spoke volumes that he himself did not.
Alyssa’s studies had progressed
greatly at the hands of Anarenen, Ajira, and Estirdalin. She was becoming
adept at her chosen magical arts, and was pleased to note that she had not
faced a single opponent which she could not handle with ease. This served to
greatly boost her confidence. She found that she loved wandering the
countryside alone now that she had less fear of attack. The Ascadian Isles
along the Bitter Coast were her favorite areas of exploration. She loved the
tall trees and cascading waterfalls. But the ashlands had their own haunting
beauty at times as well. She made dozens of high quality levitation potions
from the trama root and racer plumes she collected there, which fetched high
prices at the market. Levitating itself was an enjoyable pastime; she wished
she had more excuses to do so.
Given her interest, Anarenen had
suggested a visit to the Mages Guild in Sadrith Mora. One was forced to employ
levitation to travel about the giant fungal towers the Telvanni grew out of the
ground in the middle of their cities. The very idea held such fascination for
her that she was almost fearful of experiencing it for herself. From the
stories she heard, the Telvanni world was so alien from the Imperial one that
it was almost unrecognizable. One had to be able to take care of oneself
there, for there were virtually no rules of conduct as they existed in the Imperial
Mages Guild. Oh, but the power the ancient Telvanni possessed! Anything and
everything magical was at their fingertips. Their power flowed beyond simple spellcasting
and into the realm of Oblivion and beyond. Even the gods seemed respectful of
the ancient house. Edwinna herself seemed a touch jealous at times when she
mentioned them.
“Think of all the research they can
accomplish without being bothered by anything or anyone!” she lamented. Her
own research was not going as well. Her latest expedition to the ruins of Nchuleftingth had not returned, and had missed
their latest excavation report. She was fearful of what had become of them.
As she was making frantic preparations to organize a search team, Alyssa
approached her.
“I can go myself,” she said, “I’ve completed all of my duties for the
guild here already.” Edwinna looked surprised.
“Dwemer ruins are located in dangerous territory, and getting to them
can be dangerous. But the ruins themselves are even more deadly. They are
usually trapped. You’ve never been to a Dwemer ruin before, dear, so you can’t
possibly imagine. There are often ancient robotic automatons guarding the
lower levels. This one in particular is located far out in the Molag Amur
region northeast of Suran. You’ve never been out that far. It makes
considerably more sense to send someone who knows the area, although I do
sincerely appreciate the offer,” replied Edwinna. Alyssa crossed her arms and
looked at her sister sternly.
“I know, I read your reports. Besides, I’m only checking up on the
team to find out why they haven’t sent the latest excavation report. I can
handle that. I’m not going to be performing the entire excavation myself,
right? I go out by myself into the wilderness quite often nowadays, and I always
return home safely. I’m not the naive little apprentice I used to be.
Besides, I’ve been looking forward to a change of scenery. If these dwemer
ruins are so facinating that you’ve devoted your entire life to studying them,
who are you to deny me the opportunity to see one in person?” asked Alyssa.
Edwinna studied her closely in silence. Finally she nodded.
“You’re right. Perhaps I am a bit overprotective. It’s been a while
since you’ve gotten into any trouble, and your skills have improved considerably.
However,” she paused, “You are going to have to take along a bodyguard. The
team is missing, and I don’t want my little sister to be added to the growing
list of missing persons. That would certainly not ease my day.” Alyssa
smiled. It would do. She hurried upstairs to pack her belongings, sorting
through the potions and scrolls she might need for the journey.
~*~
A tall red-haired Nord looked down at Alyssa, an enchanted battleax
slung across his back. He narrowed his light blue eyes as though studying her.
“Alyssa, this is Hulgar, from the fighter’s guild across the way,” said
Edwinna, “He will be accomanying you on your trip to Nchuleftingth. We’ve used
his services before and have found him to be an exemplary fighter in times of
conflict and a trustworthy companion in times of peace.” Suddenly Alyssa was
nervous. The large man had scars criss-crossing his body, and his armor
radiated with a sheen she had not previously encountered and could not place.
His long red beard was outfitted with many small braids, as was his long red
hair. He certainly looked intimidating. She wasn’t sure now whether she
should to be more frightened of the animunculi or her own traveling companion.
He took her small hand with his large rough one and bowed low.
“At your service, m’lady,” he said. Alyssa managed a small smile,
looking questioningly at Edwinna. Edwinna grinned.
“Don’t worry dear. No one in their right mind will mess with you while
Hulgar is around to protect you. You needn’t worry about dismantaling any of
those automatons either. Just bring back that excavation report, and let me
know why it’s been so late in arriving,” smiled Edwinna, “The best way to get
to Nchuleftingth is to travel east to Suran, then head northeast from there.
Here, let me mark it on your map.” Edwinna bent over slightly to draw an X
over a small spot on Alyssa’s map of Vvardenfell. Alyssa studied it, suddenly
becoming nervous. It was in the middle of nowhere as far as she could tell.
The nearest location she could make out was Uvirith’s Grave, and she wasn’t
sure a tomb would be a great place to rest and recuperate. Suran was still a
ways off. It would be a journey indeed. Alyssa shuddered.
“Are you ready to depart, m’lady?” asked Hulgar. Alyssa nodded silently,
gathering her things. As she turned to leave heading for the silt strider
port, she couldn’t help glancing back one last time. Her guildmates were all
watching her. Anarenen had wrapped his arms around Edwinna’s shoulders, and
she was leaning against him. They waved goodbye when she turned around.
Smiling, she waved back. This would be quite an adventure. The first of many
to come, she hoped. She ran to catch up with Hulgar’s long strides.
~*~
“Oh, it’s beautiful!” exclaimed
Alyssa when the pair arrived in Suran. The rolling hills and fresh air that
greeted them were a welcome refreshment after the hot ashlands of Ald’ruhn.
Alyssa took a deep breath in.
“Indeed. I always make a point of
stopping here between adventures,” smiled Hulgar. Alyssa had grown fonder of
the big Nord on the silt strider ride to Suran. He had many tales to tell of
pirates and smugglers, damsels in distress, ancient cursed tombs, strange
daedric cults whose members still practiced the ancient evil rites, and so many
other wonderful and fascinating things that it made Alyssa’s head spin.
“It’s getting late though. Oh,
look at the sunset! I wish we had sunsets like this in Ald’ruhn. The ash
blocks most everything. I suppose we ought to find a place to rest tonight. I
prefer to travel during the day,” said Alyssa happily as she eyed the new city.
“Aye. Of course leaving in the
morning will put you to the ruins by nightfall again, but I agree that it’s
best to rest. It won’t matter what time of day it is once we get inside those
dark Dwemer passages. Where would you like to go?” he asked as they headed
down the silt strider port and into the hilly town.
“I don’t know. I’ve never been
here before. Let’s see… over there we have a smith and trader and up here we
have… Desele’s House of Earthly Delights? Is that an inn?” asked Alyssa. At
this, the Nord threw back his head and laughed out loud.
“Aye, it is of sorts. There are
private rooms for resting the night – quite luxurious I might add – but resting
is not Desele’s main attraction. It’s a brothel. Albeit it’s the nicest
brothel I’ve ever seen,” smiled Hulgar. Alyssa looked surprised.
“A brothel? Right here off the
silt strider port? How quaint!” she exclaimed. She could hear the sounds of
music and laughter from inside. It sounded almost like a tavern. A strange
red light hung above the door, illuminating the sign outside. Hulgar laughed
again.
“Desele’s is one of Suran’s feature
attractions. The establishment is famous all over Tamriel,” he grinned. Alyssa
grimaced. Clearly the Nord was quite familiar with the place. Somehow though,
this bothered her less than she expected it would.
“Well I’ve never heard of it,” said
Alyssa.
“Of course you haven’t. You’re a
good girl. It’s a respectable enough establishment though, but we can find
somewhere else to rest. Let’s see… there is the Suran Tradehouse… I’m not sure
if they have any beds available but we can check,” offered Hulgar, starting
down the stairs. Alyssa hurried to follow.
“Of course, if there are any, they
won’t be nearly as nice as Desele’s – I doubt many adventurers come here who
don’t stay overnight at Desele’s,” he added. Alyssa hurried to catch up with
him as he entered a large building. The Dunmer woman who stood behind the
counter narrowed her light red eyes at the pair.
“Have you got any rooms for rent
tonight?” the Nord asked jovially as he leaned over the counter.
“I’m sorry. We’re booked up for
the night. I just handed off the key to my last room not five minutes before
you arrived. You might want to try Desele’s. It may be more… what you are
looking for anyway,” the Dunmer answered politely, shooting a sly smile at the
pretty Breton girl attempting to catch her breath as she caught up to the big Nord.
Hulgar grinned.
“Thanks anyway, we’ll see what we
can do,” he winked.
“Well, we can always head out of
the city and set up camp there if you don’t want to stay at Desele’s. Or we
could just travel by night. That’ll get us to the ruins by daybreak and you’ll
be home that much sooner,” offered Hulgar as they left the establishment.
“Actually,” started Alyssa, “I’m
kind of curious. I mean, I’ve never heard of a brothel run so openly, and if
the rooms are really nice… I certainly don’t want to hire anyone or have anyone
try to hire me, but…”
“Ha! You are something else. No,
no one will bother you. You aren’t on display after all. There are plenty of
girls there who are, and plenty more who are just there to rest and have a
drink. Heck, you can go in, get a room, and never even talk to anyone if you
want. Though I don’t know why you would. Drinking with the other patrons is
half the fun,” smiled Hulgar, turning back to return to Desele’s.
“Besides, you’ll be with me,
right?” he winked. Alyssa giggled. She did want to know what went on behind
that ornate door under the glowing red light. It seemed safe enough.
~*~
A waft of sweet floral perfume
greeted Alyssa’s nostrils when she entered Desele’s. The big room she entered
was lit with low hanging lanterns spilling their soft red light across the
opulently draped walls. Sumptuous carpets spilled over the floors, making
every step Alyssa took feel soft and light. There were dark intricately carved
wooden tables along the main floor, giving a faint scent of cedar to the room.
Alyssa realized that they must have been imported from far away. The
craftsmanship was superb. The patrons were well dressed and a blushing young
red-haired minstrel played soft music in a corner as she sang sweet songs of
love and passion. Her ornately carved lute rested just below her bare supple
breasts, and she wore a flamboyant deep red skirt split up the side to reveal
her long legs. She smiled at her audience as her soft red curls fell about her
face and began another verse of her song.
“Ah! A fellow Breton! How
pleasant! What can I do for you today, pretty little thing?” asked the topless
woman from behind the counter with a wink. The soft velvet lace of her
elaborate blue skirt did more to accentuate her nudity than hide it.
“I’m, uh, just, looking for a room
for the night…” said Alyssa nervously as she glanced around. Suddenly she was
out of her element.
“Oh I’m sure you are,” laughed the
woman, shooting a sly smile at Hulgar. Hulgar laughed. Alyssa blushed.
Suddenly it dawned on her how it must look to outsiders, a man taking a young
woman to a brothel looking for a room for the night. She felt suddenly hot
with embarrassment.
“Oh no, it’s not like that, it’s
just, I’m, uh…” she started. The woman laughed again, her large pert breasts
shaking as her chest heaved. She seemed proud to have them on display. Her
hair was cut short so that there would be nothing to hide them.
“Don’t worry,” she said with a
wink, “We don’t make judgments here. If you want a room, you shall have a
room, no questions asked. It’s my job to make sure my patrons are as happy and
comfortable as possible, no matter what their tastes. I’m Desele, by the way.
If you ever need anything more just be sure to ask. What kind of a room would
you like?” Alyssa looked confused.
“Oh, nothing too fancy. A room
with two beds would be best,” offered Hulgar with a smile.
“Hmm. I don’t think I have any
such rooms actually, although many of my suites have very comfortable couches
in addition to our famous luxurious beds. Would that do?” asked Desele.
“Aye. That’ll do just fine,”
nodded Hulgar. He gave Desele some money, and she handed him a key in return.
“I don’t mind sleeping on a couch,”
he whispered in Alyssa’s ear, tickling her with his red beard, “It’s better
than I’m used to actually.” Alyssa smiled up at him gratefully. At least he
hadn’t made the situation any more awkward.
“Can Khinjarsi get you something to
drink?” purred a topless female Kajiit from behind the counter, her tail
swishing gracefully.
“I wouldn’t mind a big mug of mazte,”
smiled Hulgar.
“Khinjarsi will get it for you,”
purred the little cat happily, raking her claws through her soft fur
seductively as she licked her lips and set to pouring the drink.
“Does the pretty Breton want some
too?” asked Khinjarsi.
“Nothing for me thanks,” replied
Alyssa. Just then something caught her eye. The topless Kajiit pouring drinks
was wearing slave bracers. A wave of horror washed over her. Suddenly she
couldn’t take her eyes from the shiny glistening bracers. Khinjari returned
and handed Hulgar his drink.
“You’re… a slave?” asked Alyssa. Desele
laughed.
“Oh yes, Khinjarsi here is a very
spoiled slave. We treat her quite well around here, don’t we my dear?” said Desele,
reaching over to squeeze Khinjarsi’s white breasts. Khinjarsi purred, nodding
at Alyssa with a grin.
“The Suran Slave Market is just
around the corner from here,” continued Desele, “Most of the Hlaalu slaves are
purchased right here in Suran. They go on to perform farm labor for the most
part, but Khinjarsi here was so pretty that we just had to steal her away. She
was only a kitten when I first bought her. I raised her myself. I take good
care of all my girls, really I do. Ask any of them. Now the only thing Khinjarsi
here is a slave to is pleasure, isn’t that right? And really, when you think
about it, aren’t we all slaves to pleasure?” Desele ran her hands down her own
body, stopping to rub her breasts, pinching the nipples with a wink as she let
out a long sigh. Khinjarsi laughed out loud. Alyssa felt suddenly hot and
embarrassed, and looked away.
“Oh, don’t worry dear, you can look
all you want. That’s what they’re there for,” smiled Desele. Alyssa didn’t
know what to say. She smiled back.
Looking around she saw that there
were three nude dancers gyrating on three stages in the far side of the room
opposite the topless young minstrel. Patrons cheered them on as the girls
laughed and danced, clearly enjoying the attention. Other nude girls mingled
with the patrons, occasionally disappearing with them into rooms upstairs. The
girls were all shapes and sizes, but all of them looked happy. She noted that
not a single one wore slave bracers. Perhaps they were all, as Desele put it,
slaves only to passion. Hulgar had since taken a seat near the corner of the
room and was happily drinking his mazte and enjoying the show. Other women and
girls were present, fully clothed and giggling as they too seemed to be
enjoying the show as they drank. A few of them even danced with the nude
dancers on the sidelines. She even saw one or two of them leave with one or
more of the dancers for the back rooms.
“Curious,” thought Alyssa, becoming
more at ease. All in all though, Hulgar had been right. The establishment was
clean and lavish and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. It had been an
enlightening experience, though not necessarily something she would take up on
a regular basis. Alyssa gathered up her things to head for her room upstairs.
Hulgar appeared to be having fun for the moment, so it was just as well that
she went alone. He could find the couch when he was ready. She wanted to be
well rested for her big day tomorrow.
