Andrew Ross stood next to the metal gate of Megaton which led out into a hostile, dangerous world. If the raiders didn’t torture and murder him, there were countless other ways to expire one’s life out in the wastes. From the mutated wasteland insects and creatures to the invisible enemy of radiation which Andrew knew he needed to protect himself against constantly.
But here and now he stood at the apex of the steep sloping crater on which the town of Megaton was built, with only the steel wall behind him, Stockholm the sniper above him, and the entire town of Megaton before him. The events leading to this showdown of the citizens of Megaton, sans Martha Crowne and Jenny Stahl, versus Andrew Ross were a blur. Andrew knew that the news of Jenny’s rape had blinded him with rage, but he could still make out the nuances of what had happened and fit them together like a jigsaw puzzle until a clear image was painted in his mind. In his mind’s eye, Andrew saw himself breaking into Jericho’s home. Jericho had company, Billy Creel. Andrew saw Jericho having sex with Maggie while Billy sat masturbating to the scene before him. Andrew let out a whistle and watched as the old raider scrambled to cover himself with the bed sheets he had been lying on a second before. Andrew heard his voice telling Jericho of his sins against the innocent Jenny Stahl and saw the raider’s eyes widen as Andrew cocked back the hammer of his .44 magnum handgun. Andrew saw Billy Creel leaping up from his spot at the table with a knife, preparing to stab Andrew in the chest. He saw himself switching targets in slow motion from the terrified Jericho to the leaping Billy Creel before firing off a single shot that decapitated the man. Andrew saw the wide eyes of Jericho as he approached menacingly before placing the bottle of the gun to the man’s head. He pulled the trigger. Here and now, in the present, the reality hit Andrew like a ton of bricks, however, his mind was unremorseful. sheriff Lucas Simms and his bride to be, Nova stood before the crowd. They were flanked on the left by Jenny Stahl who stood with her arms crossed and her eyes staring at the ground, her back turned to the sheriff. On his right stood Martha Crowne, who was being held tenderly by her fiancé Gob. She stood with tears in her blue eyes looking on as the man she had taken to calling dad stood ready to be sentenced, without a trace of guilt in his eyes. “I realize you believe you done the right thing,” Lucas Simms said carefully, “but you have killed quite a few folks around here. Moriarty, Doc Church and now Jericho and Billy Creel. You‘ve got a lot of Megaton blood on your hands. And what about little Maggie. What will she do now?” “I think she will be better off,” Andrew spat, “Billy was prostituting her.” “Yeah, sick as that is, I don‘t care. If Maggie had come to me and told me she wanted out, I would have taken Billy into custody. I got enough fires to put out around here without worrying about what some pervert‘s willing kid is being sold for.” “Nevertheless, I had reason to put Jericho down. He raped Jenny. The sex was clearly against her will.” Andrew crossed his arms across his chest and glared at the sheriff defiantly. “Then you should have told me regardless of what Jenny wanted.” Lucas said, his voice lowering. He then made ready his Chinese assault rifle. “Jenny, you go up there with him, you hear?” Lucas said. She started to protest, sighed and walked toward the gate and stood next to Andrew. “Jenny Stahl, you are hereby exiled into the wasteland for conspiring to murder a resident of Megaton. You must exit the gate now or you will be shot.” Lucas announced, pulling the bolt back on his rifle to drive his point home. Jenny shook her head and turned, headed for the door. She opened it with a loud creak and left the city. “Andrew Ross, you are hereby exiled for the murder of several Megaton citizens. Leave now through the gate or you will be shot.” Lucas announced as the door creaked closed behind Jenny. “No, Andrew! Defend yourself! I need you!” Gem cried as she broke away from the crowd and ran toward Andrew and embraced him fiercely, crying tears into his thick leather armor. “shh.” Andrew cooed into her ear. “Go back to Gob. I will be okay and so will you.” “let me go with you.” Gem whispered as Lucas shouted his first warning for Gem to get back into the crowd. “you‘re pregnant, Gem. Give birth, and then you may come and find me.” Andrew whispered. Martha nodded, wiping a tear. She moved back toward Gob, who held her close and whispered in her ear as she hugged him and cried on his shoulder. The young woman did not want to agree, that was perfectly clear. The turmoil she felt was etched upon her pretty face with great passion and anger. Gem turned back to Andrew as he turned toward the gate. She called out to him. “I swear I will find you again. I love you!” Gem called. Andrew looked over his shoulder and nodded with a confident but melancholy grin. Andrew opened the great steel door with a loud creak. Without another word, Andrew stepped out of Megaton with only the clothes on his back and the weapons and items he had collected around the wasteland, being exiled for a third time. ----------------------- With all of the dangers Andrew had been exposed to since first discovering adventure and survival following his reluctant escape from vault 101, he still had to admit that fear was a new emotion. His addled brain had been taxed enough as he approached Jenny, who was sitting on a rock nearby. She seemed to be wondering what to do next. “So what now?” Andrew asked as he neared Jenny. To the question she answered simply by shrugging her shoulders. Her gaze was long and her jaw was set. She appeared to be on the verge of tears. “Jenny, maybe I can convince Amata to allow you to live in the vault for the time being.” Andrew suggested. Jenny sighed. “Although I don’t much look forward to living underground, I may not have a choice.” Jenny said. “what are your plans?” “Seeing as how im pretty much a nomad now, I am still resigned to find my dad. I have to make sure he‘s safe.” Andrew answered. “I thought you and I were going to live in peace in Megaton for a long time.” Jenny mused, turning her green eyes to set on Andrew’s blue eyes. “It would have been good to do that.” Andrew agreed. Jenny took a labored breath. “It was my fault we were exiled! I should have gone and told Lucas what had happened to me instead of making you kill him. Im so sorry, Andy.” she lamented, a tear trickling down her cheek. “Im not. Jericho got just what he deserved for raping you. And Billy got in the way of that and attacked me after I shot Jericho. Good riddance to both of them.” Andrew shot back, his face becoming a grimace. Jenny listened intently. She took a breath. “Andy, don’t get so cold that you become accustomed to death.” Jenny warned quietly. “It seems that death is something that is easy to get used to in this world.” Andrew said. Jenny nodded. “It is everywhere. But don’t lose your sweet and helpful attitude. It is what makes you human instead of one of those raiders.” Jenny’s advice was spot on, Andrew knew. He nodded as he carefully considered her words. “Come on Jenny. Lets get you holed up somewhere.” Andrew said, extending a gloved hand. Jenny took his hand and allowed him to help her to her feet. He motioned for her to follow him. As they walked, Andrew explained that he remembered that Amata changed the password required to enter the vault. “So I will need to take you to a place that is safe and not too far away.” Andrew finished as the duo continued wandering the wastes, neither of them knowing just where they would go, but wandering nevertheless. “How about Arefu?” Jenny asked after a lull in conversation. Andrew thought for a moment. He had cleaned up the mess that the villagers had been living in as well as covered for their security. It wasn’t a bad idea. “Arefu sounds good to me. And that isn’t too far away either.” Andrew said after checking his pip boy for specifics. He set the GPS of his wrist device to Arefu’s coordinates. ---------------------- “No way, sir. I know you both mean well, but we are spread too thin as it is.” Andrew cocked his head at the new show of insensitivity that emanated from Evan King as he and Jenny Stahl stood before the sandbags that stood before Arefu’s security. “You know, Evan, maybe I think you owe me. I tracked my ass all over the damn Capitol wasteland to solve a problem you couldn’t fix on your own and you repaid me with a fucking bottle of whiskey!” Andrew shouted, incredulous of the man’s attitude. “Hey, that came from the heart. That was the most sincere, most heartfelt thanks that I could ever give for the invaluable service that you gave to myself and these citizens. I gave you that bottle from the depths of my soul!” Evan King said, who was sobbing by the end of his own speech, and for whatever reason as the speech started, Andrew started hearing a sad violin tune in the background. Andrew looked to the right and noticed Agatha as she continued to play the sad strings. Andrew shot her with his .44 magnum and she fell off the side of the overpass and the music stopped. Andrew could feel the negative Karma points rise, but it was worth it. “so all kidding aside, you fucking owe me Evan. My friend has no other place to go and you damn well better take her in. If you thought the Family was bad for your health, you haven’t even seen my bad side.” Andrew said, lowering his voice to a grave whisper. “I will take her in.” came a familiar female voice. Andrew looked beyond Evan to see Karen Schenzy, the only citizen of Arefu who took Andrew seriously or was even genuinely grateful for his intervention. Hell, she was the only citizen who even tried to repay him for his services with arguably her greatest gift of all, her hospitality and her sex. Karen offered her thanks by way of a warm meal, a cold drink, a place to stay for the night and she had demonstrated her appreciation by laying with him. The memory of her skilled body had not left Andrew’s mind. He knew that Karen was worth listening to. “Meh, whatever. I don’t give a shit.” sighed Evan, rolling his eyes. “But she is your responsibility.” “So help you God, if she makes any kind of trouble for this town, if she steals even one piece of candy, if she is caught outside after curfew, if she even looks at me cross eyed…then I swear by my daddy‘s grave, that by the power vested in me and my gun by myself, that every waking second of Jenny and Karen‘s meaningless existence shall be fraught with pain and misery. She shall curse her mother‘s womb for spitting her into existence! She shall curse her father‘s seed for creating her! The mercenaries and raiders and brothers of steel shall find their bloated corpses floating in the nearest irradiated water source! They shall forever know the horrible vengeance of Evan King! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!” “Lay a finger on her and ill kill you.” Andrew sang sweetly as he walked back down the ramp. Karen and Jenny laughed, Evan King seethed. Karl, the vampire guard donated by the nearby Family simply shook his head with a half grin on his face. ------------------------------- Jenny Stahl sat across from Karen at her table, sharing a meal with her newfound friend. She looked around at the dilapidated house she found herself in now. It was cozy, she thought as she returned her attention to the woman across from her. Jenny found Karen to be warm and friendly and somewhat open compared to the other people she had met in the wasteland. Karen, although a widower at 32 years of age seemed to have a mature look at life and enjoyed herself as much as one was able to in these desolate and sometimes dangerous surroundings. Nevertheless Jenny found herself identifying with the older woman. “forgive the mess.” Karen quipped as she ate with her new housemate. Jenny had obviously been hungering and Karen felt that the least she could do, if nothing else, was to provide a meal and a warm bed. The only bed around the house however, was the one she used. It was large but the two women would have to snuggle in pretty tight together. “Ive certainly seen worse. Like my restaurant for example. Cluttered as hell.” Jenny said with a grin. She savored her stew as she sipped the steaming broth. “So what brings you to Arefu?” Karen asked as she dug into her own plate of Dandy Boy Apples. She leaned forward as she spoke to Jenny. Jenny appreciated how Karen’s eyes seemed to drink her in and her ears heard and understood her every word. She was an intent listener and it showed. “Exile is the technical term.” Jenny replied between bites. “Hmm. First Andrew and now you. Ive met a lot of exiles in the past few months.” Karen joked. “That smile looks good on you, you know? You should do that more often.” Karen said with a smile of her own. Jenny blushed but thanked the woman. “So how did you come to be exiled? Sorry about talking so much, but since I was widowed a few years ago, I haven‘t had a lot of visitors.” Karen said, sitting back in her chair as her food had been finished. Karen rose for a moment, but returned with a chilled bottle of wine and two glasses. “drink with me?” asked Karen, displaying the wine glasses. “Yes, thank you.” Jenny answered politely. Karen poured two glasses of wine and offered one to Jenny, who accepted gratefully. “Its alright. I used to be funny.” Jenny said, the wry comment actually making her smile again. “You first. How do you know Andrew?” Jenny already knew the bits and pieces Andrew had told her, but she was curious as to Karen’s position of knowing Andrew. “If it wasn’t for your friend, the exile, Arefu would be in a ton of shit right now, pardon my French. Truth be told, we owe our existence to that lone wanderer.” Karen answered without missing a beat. She sipped the strong, sweet liquid before setting her glass back on the table. “2077...great year.” she quipped. “Andrew is wise to the world even given his limited knowledge of being out in it.” Jenny admitted, “I don’t mind saying that I was more than a little attracted to him when we first met. Even as naïve as he was, hurt and overwhelmed from the loss of the only home he had ever known, he still struck me as the type of person I wanted to know.” Karen nodded her head. “he certainly gave of himself to protect a little puissant town he didn’t even know for very little reward. I can see why you chose him.” “it isn’t what you think. He’s not my boyfriend or anything, he’s my friend. I love him in my own way, but it doesn’t go much further than that.” Jenny replied, taking her first sip of wine. “so you’re single then?” Karen asked. “Yeah, I am.” Jenny said, suddenly blushing. She brushed away an auburn bang that had fallen into her eyes. “you still haven’t told me why you were exiled. Fair is fair.” Karen reminded Jenny. She nodded and sighed. For whatever reason, she was glad Karen had changed the subject. “You’re right. Well Andrew had been away, tracking his father, and there was this old washed up raider who had his eye on me. He ambushed me in front of Andrew‘s house and he raped me. But then, Andrew returned.” Jenny said. ----------------- Smith Casey’s garage. It didn’t look like much, but then again Andrew knew it was designed not to. Nevertheless Andrew was amused by the idea that had he not been searching for it, he would have missed the crumbling building. Andrew kept his gaze trained on a robot patrolling a nearby military campground, ignorant of his presence even as Andrew snuck into the plain blue door ahead of him. Once inside, the only threats to Andrew’s safety were a few mole rats and an unlucky radroach. Andrew located the switch on the far wall. He pressed the red button and watched as a section of the flooring gave way as the iron doors separated and were drawn down, revealing the staircase leading to vault 87. Andrew took the flight of stairs down through the generator room and opened the single, unassuming door that led into the interior of the vault. Andrew felt a twinge of home sickness as he stared at the vaults blue steel walls lined with various computers. He shook his head and forced himself on. In the next room Andrew very nearly pulled his magnum revolver on a robobrain, but as he collected himself the robot spoke. “hello vault citizen, you are over 200 years late. Please put on your vault 87 suit and sit down in your assigned tranquility lounger. If you do not have your jumpsuit, I will provide one for you.” With that, the robot handed Andrew an old musty vault 87 jumpsuit. Andrew shrugged and quickly took his metal armor off, stowed it and quickly redressed in his new blue leather vault jumpsuit. Andrew moved on to the next hallway until he came to a large window. Peering through the glass, Andrew was taken aback to see in the large room before him a gigantic cylindrical computer bank that was connected by large cables running along the floor to several large egg looking capsules. Inside the machines sat a single person, all dressed in the same vault jumpsuits, and all stuck in the same trancelike state. They stared at tiny monitors positioned just before their eyes. As Andrew circled and peered into each pod, he couldn’t help but wonder at the ingenuity of the complex looking pods. Andrew gasped and pressed his hands against the glass of one particular pod. “Dad! Can you hear me?” Andrew called out loud. He pounded his fists into the resilient glass. Andrew gave up with a sigh when his father neither acknowledged him or even moved. “well, looks like my only option is to see if I can find dad in this simulation.” Andrew said. ---------------------------- Jenny Stahl kissed Karen passionately in the flickering candle light. In her sluggish wine-induced state, Jenny had blushed, flirted with, and eventually kissed her hostess. Jenny had been asking her new friend probing questions about her life and the more Karen drank, the more open she became. “I don’t know how you could stand to be all alone here,” Jenny slurred after her third glass of wine, “the horniness alone would do me in.” “it doesn’t bother me.” Karen said, equally drunk. “why is that?” Jenny wondered aloud. “because of Ken and Brailee Ewers.” Karen said confidently. Jenny grinned. “married couple? How did you pull that off?” Jenny wondered, impressed. “well since Brailee lost her mind from swimming in the lake too much, yes she has always been that stupid, Ken has had the hots for me.” Karen said. “I can’t imagine being married to someone that brain dead.” Jenny sniped. Karen agreed. “Ken says it isn’t easy. She can’t even give him a blowjob anymore. She just bites him.” Karen said. Jenny shuddered when she said the last. “And well, I always had a thing for Brailee. She’s dumb as a bag of hammers but she is sexy.” Karen continued, “So I told Ken that he could fuck me any time that he wants if I could have equal access to Brailee. He grinned and suggested a threesome and I readily accepted.” “so you like girls huh?” Jenny said, a sexy grin coming to her face. It was then that Jenny moved forward and clamped her lips around Karen’s. She had been surprised at first, but Karen quickly warmed to the idea. For the last four or five hours, Jenny and Karen had been getting to know each other. Jenny had told Karen about how she and Andrew had become exiled from megaton. Karen nodded, covering her chin with her hand as she listened. “sounds to me that the prick deserved it.” Karen had said. Jenny agreed whole heartedly. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
