Chapter 11 Axel’s POV It was great working with Roxas. Most people would get tired of seeing the same person all day every day, but not me. No. I loved spending every minute with him. We’d learned so much about each other over the last couple of days, since we had so much time to actually sit down and talk. I learned that Roxas had a slight fear of water ever since an incident on Destiny Islands when he was younger. I found out that he loved going to the zoo. I’d have to take him sometime to see his face light up like a little kid. Lately he’s been a little distracted since he found out his sister was moving to Destiny Islands. I tried asking him if he was okay, but he’d always answer with ‘I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me’ But he was making it pretty hard to not worry, when he was always spacing out the way he was. I watched silently as he sat reading a book. His expression changing with the fleeting moods of the characters within, his lips moving ever so slightly as he read to himself. Suddenly he looked at me over the brim of his reading glasses, his mouth formed a small smile. “You’re distracting me” he spoke slightly amused. “Sorry” I apologised, leaning forwards towards him. “You just look so happy when you read” I grinned. He rolled his eyes and prodded my cheek. “You’re such a sap sometimes” “Hmm… well excuse me for liking it when my favourite person is happy” I swatted his hand away from my face. “Which, by the way, seems to be less and less often lately…” I left the statement hanging and gave him a sideways glance. He placed his book down and removed his glasses. “How so?” He asked, genuinely confused. “You just seem… distant lately, is all” I said as I walked my way around to him, placing my hands on his shoulders, pulling him closer to me. He looked up at me through his bangs. Pushing his hair from his face so that I could see his eyes, I smiled softly. “You know I don’t mean to be, right?” He asked, his own arms encircling my waist. “I know, but I just wish you wouldn’t bottle things up. I’m here if you need to vent” I leaned down a placed a kiss on his forehead. “Thanks” he said, hiding his face in my shirt. “I think I’m going to go visit my mom today” he muttered through the material. “Yeah?” I asked stroking his hair on the back of his head. “Yeah... I just want to see how she feels about Naminé moving away so suddenly, too” He breathed out a sigh causing the warm air to tickle my side through my shirt. “Do you want me to come with?” I felt him shake his head as an answer to my question. “I’ll be fine one my own. You can stay home and do all the housewife duties. It’s about time you cooked for me for once” He said, removing his face from my top to grin up at me. I tugged lightly on his hair at his words. “Hey, I cooked the other day” I shot back at him. “And?” he replied quirking an eyebrow. “Fine, just let me know what time you’ll be home and stuff, so the food doesn’t go cold” “Yes, Dear” he said cheekily. “Thank you, Darling” I responded in a, very badly I might add, falsetto tone. -- 4 hours later I was sat in my Mom’s kitchen as I watched her put another pot of tea on. Her blonde hair was tied back loosely into a bun and a pink frilly apron tied around her waist. She turned around and smiled as she sat on the stool next to mine. She brushed my fringe out of my face and shook her head slightly. “You need a hair cut” she spoke as she examined my hair. “Don’t change the subject, Mom. Are you seriously okay with Naminé moving to the islands?” I asked waving her hands away from my face. She sighed and smoothed the apron over her knee. “I don’t see the problem, baby. She’s a grown woman now. You know… she can look after herself” she raised an eyebrow at me before standing to make the tea. “You don’t understand, it’s a 3 hour drive just to see you, Naminé is the only family I have that is remotely close to me and now she wants to move to an island that is at least a 5 hour plane ride” I ran a hand through my hair frustratedly. “I hardly ever see you. Can you imagine how it would be if Naminé moved there?” “You’re always welcome to visit me whenever you want to, and I’m sure Naminé would love to have you stay with her for a few weekends through out the year, you will see her but just not as often” she spoke as she poured the hot water into both of the mugs. Once she’d finished, she brought both drinks over and handed one of them to me. She laughed softly when she saw me worrying at my bottom lip. Reaching over, she cupped my cheek and ran her thumb gently over my skin in a loving manner. “Naminé is a big girl. She can look after herself. After everything she has been through over the last 3 months, I think she deserves to try and start fresh. Even if it means moving out of Radiant Garden completely” she titled her head and looked me in the eyes. “Please, try to support her through this, she needs her big brother right now” “I know” I groaned childishly. She giggled and patted my cheek a little. “Good boy. Now, how are things with you?” she asked, picking up her tea and sipping it daintily. “Things are great. I feel kind of bad that things are going so well for me and not for Nams…” “Don’t be silly. Everyone is allowed happiness; don’t feel like you shouldn’t deserve it because someone else is going through a rough patch. I’m sure Naminé doesn’t resent you for it” She gave me a look that said ‘Don’t be an idiot, and drink your tea’ “You’re right, she doesn’t. But it still doesn’t make me feel any better about it” I mumbled around the rim of the mug. “So, who’s the lucky guy?” she asked me, giving me a sly smile. I rolled my eyes and set down the cup. “His name is Axel. He’s a year older than me, has ‘fire truck red hair’, he’s as tall as a tree and he makes me incredibly happy” I smiled fondly as I idly played with the cup in my hands. “I bet you’re father would have loved him” she smiled softly. “How’d you come to that conclusion just from my description of Axel?” I asked curiously. “You said it yourself, baby; Axel makes you happy, so of course your father would approve” “Thanks, Mom. It means a lot to hear that” I said before pulling her into a tight embrace. “It’s the truth, sweetie” -- It was eight thirty when I arrived back home, and I was a bit taken aback when I did. Upon entering my apartment I saw Axel sat on the couch with some woman. She had short black hair and bright blue eyes. She didn’t seem to be much taller than me and she was pretty, too pretty. The pair of them were too busy laughing to notice I’d come in. A little annoyed by it, I cleared my throat loudly to announce my presence. “Oh hey, Roxas… you’re back. I didn’t hear you come in” The redhead spoke, making a move to stand up. “I noticed” I spoke shortly, hanging my coat up and putting my keys in the side table. “I hope you don’t mind me having a friend over…” “Oh, don’t mind me” I grunted making my way to my bedroom. Before I closed the door I heard Axel mutter an ‘I’ll be right back’ to his raven haired friend. As soon I shut the door behind me it was open again. “I’m sorry; I should’ve asked if it was okay. You see, Xion came into the shop after you left, we got to catching up and I invited her back for coffee, since I’d left my wallet here and I couldn’t go and buy it… are you mad?” He asked tentatively as he rested his hand on my shoulder. “No… I don’t… No, Axel I’m not mad. I just didn’t expect to see my boyfriend alone in my apartment with a pretty girl. It just took me by surprise” I mumbled as I took off my shirt to get changed in to my sweats. “You can see why I’d think certain things though, right? I mean, I know you’re not gay, after all you were with a woman before me… my mind just automatically assumed…” “Hey” he cut me off before I could continue. “I had enough of Larxene accusing me of things I wasn’t doing, I don’t want you to start doing the same. Besides, I’m a Roxas-sexual now. Meaning, I only have the hots for you. You’re the only person I want to look at in that way, to touch in that way, and to think of in that way. Xion is just an old school friend. There was never and never will there be anything between us more than friendship. You’re stuck with me Roxas, whether you like it or not” By now Axel had his arms wrapped tightly around my waist and pulled my body flush against his. He brushed my hair out of my face and smiled. “You need a hair cut” I hit his chest lightly and rolled my eyes. “You know, my Mom said exactly the same thing earlier” I pulled at a stray piece of hair and held it in front of my eyes inspecting it the best I could. “I guess I should get it neatened up a little…” Axel laughed and nodded before leaning down and planting a kiss on my forehead. “Come out and meet, Xion. She’s lovely; I just know you two will get along like a house on fire” -- “And then… And then, he was left in the ocean with no shorts! Oh my god, Roxas, you should have seen his face! It was a brighter shade than his hair. But the best part was, that on that day, the local nuns had left the convent, so he had to run all the way to the house flashing the nuns in the process!” “Oh my god! Oh fuck! Shit, Xion I think I’m dying here! Haha” Xion and I were laughing hysterically, while Axel sat on the couch with a sour expression, his arms crossed over his chest. I looked to Axel and my laughter was fuelled once more when I saw his face. “Was his face this colour?” I asked Xion with a snigger. “Yes!” she cried, doubling over in another onslaught of hysterics and falling sideways on the couch. Axel huffed and pushed my shoulder. “Okay I get it, we’ve all had a good laugh at Axel. You do know Xion’s done some pretty embarrassing stuff too?” Xion sat up and wiped the tears from her eyes. “Not as embarrassing as you, dude” She giggled between her words. After a few moments our laughter died down. I relaxed on the sofa and leant against Axel, who was still not looking impressed with either of us. His expression soon softened as he relaxed too, placing his arm around my shoulder, letting his hand brush loosely through my hair. Xion smiled and brushed her hair behind her ears as she looked between the two of us. “Axel, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this happy” she then looked to him “Don’t let this one go” She winked, nudging his leg. Axel breathed out a laugh and tightened his hold on me. “Don’t worry, I won’t” I felt my heart swell with joy at Axel’s words, and with a goofy grin I hid my face in his shirt, as I felt a heat rise to my cheeks. I felt so stupid but I honestly didn’t care. Axel made me unbelievably happy. -- 1 month later Axel’s POV I was waiting for Roxas as he reluctantly got his coat on, ready to go to his sisters to help her pack her stuff. She was moving to the islands today and needed help with her bags at the airport. I’d offered my services since Roxas had complained about the ‘heavy lifting’, but I know he was just thinking of excuses to stall his sister’s inevitable departure. He walked into the living area and let out an overly exaggerated sigh. “I know you hate this, but it’s your sister’s decision. I’ve already told you that I would visit her with you once she was settled into her new home” I spoke, pulling him closer to me and giving him a sideways hug. “Yeah, I know. This is just how I cope with the things I don’t like. Just… expect me to act childish for a few days. It’ll soon blow over, I promise” he smiled sheepishly. “Well remind me to not do anything that you won’t like. The last thing I need is a five year old on my hands” I poked his side making him flinch away. “Augh! Come on, we better get to Nams, trust me her moods are worse than mine when she doesn’t get her way” Grabbing the house and car keys we made our ways downstairs to the parking lot. Just as I was about to get into the passenger seat I heard my name being called from behind me. Turning around I saw Larxene making her way over to me. My eyes widened at how big her stomach was compared to the last time I’d saw her. “Larx, what are you doing here?” I asked, walking over to her so she didn’t have to waddle anymore. She laughed when she saw me look to her stomach again and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ve already confirmed with the doctor. It’s not twins… just one huge baby” She arched her back and put her hand on her hip. “I’m not looking forward to squeezing it out that’s for sure. I’m only twenty weeks in can you imagine forty weeks? Anyways, I actually came to see if you wanted to come to the scan. I mean, I was going the clinic and our… I mean your place was on the way. I just thought I’d drop in, since you never gave me an answer last time” “I don’t know…” I began as I scratched the back of my head in uncertainty. “I was going to help Roxas’ sister to the airport, she moving and needs all the help she can get…” as I was explaining myself to Larxene, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to see it was Roxas. He gave me a small smile and then looked to Larxene. “You can go if you want to. Me and Nams will be fine on our own” He didn’t sound too sure about that. Turning around to face him fully I pulled him to one side. “Are you sure? I can ask her to go on her own…” “Axel, this kid is potentially yours; do you want to miss out on something like this?” He gave me a scrutinizing look and laughed when he realized that I knew he was right. “I thought not” I walked back to Larxene and smiled. “Looks like you’re stuck with me for the afternoon” I looked to Roxas who was stood beside me awkwardly. “I’ll see you tomorrow okay?” I said before I leant down to kiss him quickly, but he avoided me and started for the car. “Cya” He replied as he chucked me the apartment keys. “Roxas! Rox…” I called after him but he ignored me. I knew he wasn’t totally okay with me going with Larxene. Man, he confuses me. “Trouble in paradise?” I heard Larxene ask sympathetically. “Yeah, you could say that…” I murmured as I watch Roxas drive away. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause trouble between you two, I shouldn’t have come” she rubbed her arm sheepishly. “What’s done is done, he’ll be fine when he gets home” I grinned. At least I hoped he would be. -- “Everything seems to be fine. Baby’s heart beat is strong and it’s in a good position. Do you want to know the sex?” The nurse asked; as she tucked a piece of brown her behind her ear. Larxene looked to me as if I would know what she wanted. “Hey don’t look at me, this is your kid” I’m so stupid. She narrowed her eyes at me slightly and then looked back to the woman. “I’d like to know” she replied, crossing her hands on the very top of her bump. With a small nod the woman moved the transducer probe further around Larxene’s stomach until she was at the baby’s rear end. After a few moments the woman looked up and smiled. “Well, Mrs…” “It’s Miss” Larxene corrected her. “Oh, sorry. Miss Inazuma. You’re having a boy” I slumped back in my chair and rested my hand on my forehead. It suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks. None of this had felt real until now. When it was an it… I felt like I could distance myself. But now that it is a he… I need some fresh air. Getting up from my seat beside Larxene I left the room and leant my back against the narrow corridor’s walls. When I thought that kid was mine for certain I was ecstatic, over the moon, elated! But now? I wasn’t sure what I wanted now. My thoughts drifted to Roxas. Would he be happy if it turned out I was the father, or would he hate me for it. Roxas isn’t petty, but a small part of me thinks that if the child is mine, he might not stick around to handle my extra baggage. A part of me hopes that I am the father. But a small selfish part of me hopes it’s not. That way I can cut all ties with Larxene altogether, so that me and Roxas can go on with ours lives without a third party. And the sooner this is all found out, the better. Standing up from the wall, I rubbed my face several times and took a deep breath. I opened the door and saw Larxene was cleaning off her stomach ready to leave. I walked over to the doctor and tapped her on her shoulder making her turn and face me. “Excuse me” I looked down to her name tag, which read ‘Aerith Gainsborough’ “Miss Gainsborough, is it possible for us to have a paternity test?” “Axel, I never agreed to thi-“ Larxene stood and walked over to me but I cut her off. “Larx… I need to know, okay? It’s driving me crazy not knowing. I need to know if I care about a kid that’s probably not even mine. Please just do this for me” “Ax. I can’t afford it, it might be cause complications…” “Actually” Aerith cut in making us both look at her. “We can do a non-invasive procedure, the child wouldn’t be harmed and there will be no risk of a miscarriage. Also these things are pretty inexpensive these days. Unfortunately we get a lot of people wanting them” “See? No harm for the baby. I’ll even pay for it, just please Larx, I need this” I practically begged her. Larxene looked down and affectionately rubbed her bump. She looked back up and there were tears on the verge of falling from her eyes. “Please don’t hate me if you don’t get the result you want” “Larxene, everything that has been done, has been done. It’s in the past, I’ve forgiven you. Whichever way this test goes will lift a huge weight off of my shoulders. I promise I won’t hate you” I assured her. Taking a deep breath I turned to Aerith. “So how much will it cost?” “Well it depends on how many potential fathers there are” she looked to Larxene briefly. “There are only two” she murmured. “Well that makes things a whole lot easier. We will only need a sample from one of the potential fathers for this and a procedure of this type would only cost around six thousand, eight hundred munny*. If there were three potential fathers that price would almost double because there would need to be more than one test. It would take about ten days for the test results to come in, so if you want I can make you an appointment for next week?” Aerith explained as sat down at her desk and began typing away at her computer. “That’d be great. Also… when you say the father needs to give a sample, what do you mean? Like, do I need to have a needle or something?” I asked getting a little bit panicked after remembering my ordeal with one of Roxas’ butcher knives. “Don’t worry, we don’t need a blood sample from the father, we can take a buccal swab, which is just a swab from the inside of your cheek, unfortunately for the mother, we do have to take a blood sample, I’m afraid” She gave Larxene an apologetic look. But she just waved it off. “I’m fine with needles, it’s this baby here who needs someone to hold his hand” she pushed my shoulder lightly. “I see” Aerith giggled, giving me a short glance. “Well I’ve booked you in for next week. It literally won’t take any longer than ten minutes to do, then after that all you have to do is wait” “Thank you” I said before shaking her hand, Larxene followed suit. With our goodbyes said we left and began the walk to Roxas’ apartment. -- “So” I began as we walked down the street together. “The guy you’re seeing…” I left the question hanging and looked to her expectantly. “Huh? The guy… oh. The guy I was seeing” she finalised, glancing sideways at me. “What about him?” “Was? So I take it you’re not together anymore?” “Nope, He was kind of already engaged. Ironic really, the guy I cheated on you with was also cheating on someone too” “I know” I spoke, knowing exactly how she was going to react. “You know?” She asked incredulously and stopped walking. “Yeah. You see, the guy you was seeing was engaged… to Roxas’ little sister” Her mouth opened in shock and anger. She stormed over to me, her face merely inches from my own. “And the thought never occurred to you to tell me?” “Hey, I only found that out a few weeks ago, which I’m guessing is when you found out too?” “Yes” she replied as her shoulders released a little bit of tension. “He came to my mother’s one night drunk out of his mind, sprouting on about how ‘she’d regret it’ and ‘she’ll change her mind, she always does’ and when I asked who she was, he told me. I was furious, my mother had to calm me down because the last thing I needed was to be stressed. He said he’d sort it all out somehow and that he’d get the money he deserved or something like that, I don’t know. I was too busy being angry with him to make any sense of what he was saying” “Do you know where he his now?” I asked curiously. “No, the last I heard, was that he was staying with someone from Org thirteen. Vexen I think his name was. I don’t even care, he can rot” her face contorted into a grimace when she spoke of him. “My sentiments exactly” I muttered “Stay away from him, okay? He mixes with people from Org thirteen, you don’t need that, and the baby doesn’t need that” “Anyone would think you care, Axel” she smirked, causing me to narrow my eyes. “Of course I care. I’ve always cared. If you don’t look out for yourself, who will?” “Thanks” she responded, her eyes downcast. “No problem” I grinned as I continued on walking down the street, Larxene followed after me. After a few moments of walking in silence we were finally at the apartment complex. I invited Larxene up for a drink since I didn’t see the harm in it. As we were walking up the first set of stairs Larxene stopped in confusion. “Where are you going?” she asked as I turned to the stairs leading to Roxas’ apartment. “Oh, I’m kind of staying with Roxas… well most of the time anyways.” I slowed my walking so that Larxene could catch up to me. “Last month I had a bit of trouble paying my electric bill, so Roxas put me up until I could afford it. I got another job, and saved up enough to pay the bill but I’ve just kind of stayed at Roxas’. I do go back to my apartment sometimes but… I kind of can’t sleep without Rox” I laughed sheepishly as I rubbed the back of my head. “Man you’ve got it bad” She grinned and shoved my shoulder. Finally we got to Roxas’. Once inside I offered her an orange juice since I knew she couldn’t drink caffeine and that was the only other thing we had other than water. She was sat on the couch while I was sat in the chair across the room. She looked around and admired most of the paintings on the wall, all of which were created by Roxas. I’d convinced him that his artwork deserved to be seen, rather that stuffed into an old chest gathering dust. So he hung them all up. It made the room look a lot better. We continued to sit in silence. Looking at her I could tell she was thinking about something, she always fidgeted with her fingers when she was thinking. “What is it?” I asked in curiosity. She looked up in slight surprise, almost as if she was shocked that I could read her so well. I think sometimes she forgets that I’ve known her for over fifteen years. “I was just thinking, it’s stupid I know, but humour me. If… and this is a huge if. If all of this had never happened between you and me, and I had never… cheated on you. Would you have still chosen Roxas? I mean we live in the same building you would have met him at some point, and you both have such an amazing connection” She never once looked at me as she spoke. I have no idea where it all came from, and why she was asking, and frankly I was a bit annoyed that she was. “If none of this had happened between us, and I had still met Roxas, I can’t say for sure if I would have stayed with you. Me and you… was it ever really serious? Did we actually love one another or were we just together out of convenience. At one point, yes, I did have romantic feelings for you, but we were young and you were all I ever knew. Looking back now I can see that, surely you can too. Where has this come from, why bring something like this up” I answered her, a little irritation seeping its way into my voice. “I thought as much” she gave a small smile. “I guess I’m just a little jealous about the connection you two have made in such a small space of time and I was a little curious, I’m sorry if I upset you with my questions” I sighed and rubbed my face with the palm of my hand. Looking at her I shook my head. “Larxene, you don’t have to apologise… ugh… you’re acting so weird. Like, I don’t know. I can’t help but think if you’d asked me that normally, you would have been bitter and it probably would have escalated into a screaming match between us. But because you’re pregnant it’s like all that venom has left you. Believe me I’m not complaining. A happy Larx is a good Larx, it’s just weird is all” She gave a small laugh and looked at me. “Most women are crazy from hormones. I guess mine sort of did the opposite” suddenly her calm demeanour crumbled and she was shedding tears. “So much for the hormones not affecting you” I said as I strode over to the couch and put an arm around her shoulder. “I’m sorry” she sniffled. “I just can’t help thinking. If this baby turns out to be Marluxia’s I’m going to be going through this by myself. You’ve lived with me; you know I’m crazy, and a complete head case most of the time. How the hell am I going to look after a tiny person?” I tried not to laugh, because I knew she was being ridiculous. Hell, I think she knew it too. “You have Dem and Me. Granted Demyx is like having a toddler as well, but as long as you have us, you’re not going to be alone through this” “Thanks” she said nudging me slightly with her elbow. “I think I you prefer having you as a friend, you’re a lot nicer” My eyebrows knitted together and I looked at her in mock insult. “I’m always nice!” “If you say so” she smirked. -- Roxas’ POV Having arrived at Naminé’s new place 2 hours ago we had put away most of her things in the closets already there. Granted it was void of furniture right now, but we had to wait for the moving truck to arrive, since she was having most of her stuff shipped over. Naminé had invited Sora, Riku and Kairi over for takeout. Since she had no chairs yet, we were all sat on boxes full of books. Kairi and Naminé were currently sat talking about all the things they could do now, which mostly consisted of lying on the beach everyday. Sora and Riku were fighting over whom was going to get the last dumpling, while I was sat left with my own thoughts. I idly poked at my food and sighed. It was so stupid, I’d been with Axel almost everyday for over a month, and I’ve gone just seven hours without him and I already feel miserable. And it seemed like I was the only one who had picked up on it. Riku shoved my knee slightly, indicating for me to scoot up so he could sit down. “Did you finally give in and give Sora the dumpling?” I asked with a slight laugh. “No” he huffed. “He stole it while I was too busy watching you be depressed” he leaned over and stuck his fork into my carton, taking the savoury ball which resided there, shoving it into his mouth in one go. “Collateral damage” he mumbled around the food in his mouth. I rolled my eyes at him and sighed. “So… you gonna tell me why you look like someone kicked your puppy?” he asked once he’d finished eating. “It’s silly” I replied. “Try me” he smirked, raising an eyebrow at me. I closed my eyes and lowered my head slightly. I turned my head to look at the silverette, to see him still looking at me awaiting my answer. I sat up straight. “I miss Axel” I expected him to scoff and laugh at me but none of that came. “That’s not silly. I saw how close you guys were when I visited. You were practically joined at the hip. I’m surprised he’s not here right now. Why isn’t he here by the way?” “I told him to stay” I answered finally. “Then why…” Riku began but I cut him off. “His ex saw him before he left. She was going for her ultrasound and asked Axel if he wanted to go. He told me that he would blow her off and come here instead, but I told him that it was something he didn’t want to miss. I mean, he could be a father and he was so willing to make her go on her own and come with me instead, what was I supposed to tell him? That he couldn’t go? I don’t want Larxene to resent me for that, I don’t want her telling the kid, if it is Axel’s, that I was the man who stopped its father from seeing it for the first time.” I put my food to one side. I suddenly wasn’t hungry anymore. “At least you did the right thing” He reasoned. “Yeah, but I didn’t want to” I mumbled, earning a quiet laugh from Riku. -- Later that evening after the rest of Naminé's stuff had arrived and we had all helped her arrange her furniture. Since Naminé only had one bedroom now, I left with Sora to spend the night at his place. I was settling down for the night when I heard my phone vibrate on the nightstand. Leaning over and retrieving the device I checked it. It was a message from Axel. ‘Hey, sorry about earlier today. I hope you’re not mad x’ I smiled as I text him back. ‘I’m not mad. I’ve missed you today’ God, I sounded like a love struck teenager. After a few minutes I never got a reply. slightly disheartened by his lack of a response I moved to place the phone back on the nightstand when I felt it vibrating once more. This time he was calling. Quickly, I answered. “Hey” I breathed out. “Hey” he mimicked, causing me to let out a light chuckle. “I’ve missed you today too” another laugh escaped me. “How did helping Naminé go?” “It was okay, we got Riku to do most of the heavy lifting, since my extra pair of arms was otherwise occupied” I admitted. “How did everything go with Larxene’s scan? Is the baby okay?” “Y-yeah, everything is fine, it’s a boy by the way” he answered, he didn’t sound as enthused as I had expected him to be. “Wow” I breathed out. “Yeah” A few moments of silence passed between us. Axel spoke up again. “I’ve asked for a paternity test. We go for it next week, so we should find out who the father is in the next fortnight or so” “They can do them that early?” I asked, a little intrigued. “Apparently yeah, luckily for me there are no needles involved on my end” he let out a laugh. “It’s non-invasive so it won’t hurt the kid” “That’s good. Do you… what do you hope the result will be?” I asked him cautiously as I brought my thumb to my mouth, nervously biting on my nail. “I don’t know. Honestly, I can’t say right now. I’m torn… I’ve been thinking about it all night and I’ve just exhausted myself. I’m so tired” I could hear him sigh down the receiver. “Oh, you should probably sleep then, I’ll let you get goi-“ “I can’t” he cut in. “I can’t sleep without you. I’ve tried. I’m just not used to not having you here, hogging all the blankets” he teased. “Really?” I asked him softly. “Yeah, do you think I’m being stupid?” He asked me with a chuckle. “No” I replied with a smile. “It’s nice to know I’m missed” I scooted down on the bed and lay on my side, cradling the phone close to my ear. “You should buy a me-sized body pillow for when I’m not there, that way you can just cuddle up to that” I snorted, in turn I heard him release a breathy laugh. “Good idea, but it’s just not the same” “Hmm… well, where are you right now?” I asked him as I snuggled down further onto my pillow. “I’m in bed, why?” “Just pretend I’m there next to you” “I’m not following” Axel replied confusedly. “Well, I’m in bed too. I’m facing to the right, so you face to the left” “Roxas I don’t…” “Just do it” I laughed. After a few seconds I heard some rustling on the phone, as Axel got himself comfortable. “Okay, now what?” he asked in an amused tone. “Okay… I’m lying in front of you, and I’ve wrapped my arms around your waist. I’m holding you close” I heard Axel let out a little snigger on the other end of the line. “Hey, I’m trying to be serious here” I chastised him. “Sorry” he apologised with a laugh. “Alright, now what are you doing to me?” I asked him curiously as I curled my body up so that my knees were closer to my stomach. “Uh, I’m running my hand through your hair and my other hand is resting on your hip” “Hmmm” I hummed in response as I imagined him doing so. “Roxas, as good as imagining you here is, it’s just not the same. If I could get a flight out to you right now I would, just to be close to you” “You’re really sappy you know that” I teased him. “I know, but I don’t care” I could practically here the smile on his face. “Me neither. Try and get some sleep. The sooner you sleep the sooner I’ll be home, then we have the entire day together tomorrow” “Yeah, I look forward to it” he sighed. “Rox?” “Yeah?” I replied. “I… good night” he spoke finally. “Good night, Axel” I spoke sleepily. I heard the dial tone and then ended the call. I placed the phone back on to the night stand and turned over so that I was facing the window. The view of the ocean and the sounds accompanying it slowly helped me drift off to sleep. And there I dreamt of Axel. -- A/N *I’ve looked to several places for a munny to real money conversion and there isn’t one. The most realistic one I saw was that 1 dollar = 17-18 munny. So I multiplied the actual price of a pre-natal paternity test by 17. Since there’s no right answer, I figured this conversion would do.
