This is a mild twist to the rose gift scene. All dialogs were inspired and are owned by Bioware. Please rate and review for appreciation or distain. “Are we sure we want to stay here? I mean Ruck looks as stable as a dragon on thin ice.” I asked Rose as everyone spread out in Branka’s former campsite. We had been told to look out for the poor dwarf and we had found him, mad from all the darkspawn blood in his system. Rose took pity on the dwarf and noticing the lack of life near Ruck’s dwelling, decided it would be the best place for us to rest before moving forward. Oghren was pleased with this, thinking he could find clues to Branka’s further movements from the old campsite. “Yes, I mean at least we know that most everything we should worry about avoids this place. Darkspawn are not used to not being on top of the food chain. Ruck will likely die sooner rather than later if he has only eaten darkspawn since he was abandoned here.” Rose replied, shaking out her sleeping roll, sitting and leaning against the rock behind. I followed her down and sat beside her and started digging through my knapsack. Since the events with the Ogre, I am shaken. The rage I channeled turned me into another person, but more importantly I almost lost her. In the life we lead, any of us could be gone in a moment. This brings the thought of the rose to my mind, the one I picked in Lothering. Something was strange about it, for I had now had it for a few weeks and it still had yet to wilt or dry out. I kept it in a bottle in my bag, so to keep it from getting crushed. The thorns along the stem are sharp as her wit and skill with the blade. The stem and leafs are as green as her eyes. The rose petals remind me of her lips, red and soft. The dream of her in the forest came to mind, and I know that the girl of the dream is only a part of the roguish dualist that sit beside me. A fear of rejection came to mind, but the regret of no attempt would be more painful. Come on Alistair, stop being a chicken, maybe a duck but not a chicken. Looking over at Rose, she was working on slowly unbraiding her hair. Leliana had done it, saying women in Orlais would braid flowers and colorful ribbons into their hair. Her hair came down as a cascading wave, covering a side of her face. Dear Maker, she is beautiful. Ok, come on stop delaying, well maybe life as a chicken would not be so bad. Though eating bugs would probably get boring. “Rose.” “Yes, Alistair.” “Um, ah here do you know what this is?” I brought the rose into view in front of her. “Your new weapon of choice?” “Yes, watch as I thrash our enemies with the mighty power of floral arrangements. Feel my thorns darkspawn!” “I have seen you with it before, you have had it since Lothering right?” “Yes, I saw it in Lothering and thought how such beauty could exist in such chaos and sadness. I just couldn’t leave it, or the darkspawn would destroy it.” “It’s a nice thought.” Rose said, touching one of the outer petals. “I thought that I would give it to you, in a lot of ways I think the same thing when I look at you.” “That’s sweet, a little funny with my name and all.” “Well, you are just very aptly named, being so prickly and all.” She shot me a glare and raised an eyebrow. “No, roses should be named after you as they are only a shadow to how beautiful you are.” Turning bright pink she said, “Thank you Alistair.” “I am glad you like it. I just have been thinking, you haven’t had any of the good experiences of being a Grey Warden. Having to listen to me complain, deal with Morrigan’s cooking and never a word of thanks. I thought you should know how rare and wonderful thing you are amidst all this darkness.” “Does this mean we’re married?” “Haha, you won’t land me that easily woman. I am quite the prize you know.” While in my head I am thinking she could land me any day. “Maybe it just a silly impulse, but was it I don’t know the right one?” “Yes, Alistair it was the perfect impulse.” “Now if we could just move past the awkward, embarrassing moments and get on to the steamy bits I would greatly appreciate it.” “Ok, off with the armor then.” “Ah,ah bluff called! You can see right through me.” “I love when you’re bashful. You’re adorable.” “I am just going to look over here until the blushing stops.” Rose slipped her fingers around mine, taking the rose from my hand. She leaned over and gave me a peck on the cheek, knowing that she turned me even redder with the action. I chanced a look over my shoulder, and saw her blush as well. As she came to lean against me, I wrapped my arm around her with her cheek plush against my chest. I kissed her on the top of her head and leaned my cheek there. Even in the deep roads, we could find comfort and peace in each other. So maybe the awkward, embarrassing bits don’t need to be rushed through after all. We stayed as we were for the hours the party rested, her fingers intertwined with mine and one hand holding the rose.
