Upon getting home, Yugo skipped dinner and went straight to the shower. Considering the spiritless greeting he gave Kenji, he might as well have just ignored the boy. Kenji was alarmed, but he knew not to meddle – Yugo sometimes got like that after a particularly tiresome day, and he had arrived later than usual that night. Putting two and two together, Kenji concluded it was best to make himself scarce and let Yugo rest.
As Yugo took his shower, pieces of the conversation with the therapist replayed on his mind seemingly at random. In just one hour, the man's preconceptions had been turned upside down, and he had been made to learn new things about himself that clashed with his own self-image. Yugo didn't have any more arguments to fall back to and could no longer escape the knowledge that he had actually enjoyed getting it on with Kenji. But did he love Kenji? Would he be able to love Kenji as more than a brother? He didn't know the answer to those questions, this was all too sudden for him. But Yugo knew one thing: he needed some time alone to sort out his feelings.
After Yugo got out of the bathroom – already dressed – he found a note from Kenji on the table saying he was going to do some late-night running. Okay, whatever. Yugo turned on the TV and ate the plate Kenji had left wrapped for him, however he soon found he wasn't in the mood for television and quickly turned it off. Frankly, Yugo didn't even like television; he only had it for the sports channels. When the man got up from the sofa, he realized he was exhausted – not physically, but mentally, so he decided to call it a night. His head felt heavy. "The wind of tomorrow will blow tomorrow," he muttered to no-one in particular; it was his favorite saying. Today's winds had felt more like a storm, maybe tomorrow's would blow him in the right direction – wherever that may be.
When the alarm clock rang at 6:45 AM the next day, Yugo realized the last thing he wanted to do was go to work. Being a successful personal trainer wasn't easy – he had clients scheduled from 8 to 12, even though it was a Saturday. He liked his work, but that particular morning all he wanted was to do was find a place to be alone. The man wasn't a very social person to begin with, so he found it doubly hard to put up with his clients' chit-chat. Two of them noticed he was a bit out of it and were considerate enough to ask if everything was alright; he said it was just lack of sleep and forced himself to smile (unconvincingly). By the end of it, Yugo felt mentally drained.
Yugo ate lunch at a local cheap restaurant, munching absent-mindedly. Afterwards, he called his trainer and told him he would be skipping that Saturday. Yugo was now free to do as he wished, but he realized he didn't know what he wanted to do. Presently, he decided to take a leisure stroll at the nearest park to relax and gather his disparate thoughts. There were surprisingly few people that day, possibly due to some local event happening elsewhere at the time. Yugo like it there, the green all around and the absence of sound pollution had a calming effect and helped him to clear his mind, although his brain still didn't want to think about his current conundrum.
The park was part of a small shrine, but the total area was actually pretty big. As Yugo strolled the less-frequented parts, his eyes caught a peculiar sight. Two youngsters about Kenji's age – and both guys – were sitting hand in hand on a bench. One of them had blond-dyed hair, a number of piercings and was resting his head on the other's shoulder. The other had auburn-dyed hair, but Yugo couldn't discern more details, since he was glancing from the side at an odd angle. The area was a deserted except for the three of them, but still it must take balls for two guys to get together in a public place. Yugo – who had been rebellious in his youth and gone out of his way to affront society – couldn't help but admire their boldness.
They hadn't noticed him yet, it was unlikely for them to catch a glimpse of him from that angle. Curious, Yugo sat down with his back to a tree and kept on watching. From the looks of it, they were just spending a peaceful time together in each other's company – it was sweet in a way. Yugo caught himself thinking it could be him and Kenji there. This image caused him to feel a painful yearning. It was a distant, unidentifiable solitude mixed with a desire to love someone.
The last time Yugo had been truly in love was in high school. The pain of that particular rejection had been so deep and overwhelming that it took many years for him to recover. Even now he wasn't sure he could ever love someone, not in that way, but he was resigned to it. Perhaps that's why he was so afraid of Kenji's feelings. Alice had fallen in love with him – and where had that led? He couldn't reciprocate and ended up just hurting her. He didn't want to risk doing that to Kenji, but he knew Kenji just wouldn't stop loving him. With Alice it had been the same way: Yugo gave in, but couldn't follow through. Could he follow through with Kenji? Yugo didn't known, and he was scared of not knowing. And there was also the sexual barrier – he wasn't entirely convinced yet of Dr. Murakami's 'theory' about his sexuality.
The man was drawn out of his brooding by the distinct sound of kissing. Still unaware of his presence, the couple were making out at a public place in broad daylight. Yugo wasn't a moralist, so he didn't really feel inclined to go bother them, but it occurred to him that he had never seen two guys kissing in real life. He wasn't even sure he had ever seen it period. Curious, the man edged a bit closer and peered. The angle was still bad though, he could barely see the other guy's face, and so he shifted and slowly brought himself to a different tree. Now they would clearly see him if they looked ahead, but they were too focused on each other.
Yugo bemusedly realized he wasn't scandalized or grossed out. It just looked... unusual; strange, in a way, but neither appalling nor appealing. But, then again, Yugo had never been much of a kiss person. His tallness forced him to bend down awkwardly in order to reach, and his own mouth was a bit bigger than average, so his kisses could get a bit messy. And he hated looking amateurish.
After a while, the couple's caresses grew bolder as they explored each other's skin below the clothes, and Yugo was positive he saw the blonde's hand going inside the other's pants. His suspicions were confirmed when the auburn-haired guy gave a low moan. Were they really going to do it there and then?! Normally, Yugo might not have given a damn about it, but in this case he had reason to. The man coughed suggestively, causing the startled youngsters to quickly withdraw their hands from each other's skin.
"Hey, you're in temple grounds, use some moderation," he said gravely, though not bothering to stand up. The two were a moment gathering their wits.
"Oh, sorry," the auburn-haired managed to say finally, face red from embarrassment. The blond didn't seem as affected, but it didn't look like he was about to say anything.
"Look, I'm trying to relax here. I don't care if you guys are gay, just don't go doing that sort of stuff in the open. And you're in a temple for fuck's sake."
The blond fixed him with a rebellious stare. Yugo noticed this but didn't even bother addressing him and kept his gaze on the sensible one.
"Say... how long have you been there?" The auburn-haired asked.
"A while."
"And you waited for us to start before you said anything?!" The blond asked with indignation. "You perv, I bet you're a just closet gay!" He spat the words.
Yugo's first instinct was to defend his 'straighthood', but then he was struck by the realization of just how ironic this was, given his current dilemma. Whatever anger Yugo was feeling was quickly replaced with a bitter chuckle that grew into raucous laughter. The bewildered youngsters stared with a mix of fear, confusion and embarrassment. Fortunately for all involved, there was no-one else around to witness the scene. The laughter died away in a few seconds, leaving a breathless and teary-eyed Yugo.
"Oh, sorry about that," he finally managed between panting breaths. "I haven't heard something that funny in a while."
"Oh... alright," the auburn-haired one said cautiously.
The blond, however, wasn't up for discretion: "Okay, what was THAT about?!" He demanded in a slightly panicked voice as soon as he recovered from the bewilderment.
"Nothing much, really," Yugo said, still catching his breath. "I just realized you're kinda right."
"About you being a perv??"
"That too!" Yugo admitted and burst out laughing once again. All his worries suddenly seemed so funny!
The youngsters were now convinced they might be dealing with a madman and started backing away slowly, step by step. Between bouts of chucking, Yugo held his hand up, signaling for them to stop: "Wait! Just... just give me a moment..." They did, but not without some reluctance.
"You know, I need to thank you guys." Yugo said when he was finally able to speak coherently again. "You've just made me realize how silly my problems are!"
"Errr... okay." The blond one said. "Can we go now??"
"Sure," Yugo said with humor. "Just don't go doing do that sort of stuff in the temple grounds, you know," he finished suggestively and winked at them.
This time, the youngsters took the admonition with a bit of healthy embarrassment and left the area in discreetly hurried steps. Yugo knew he had probably made a fool of himself, but he didn't care. He was thankful this happened, because it allowed him to see his own doubts from a third-party perspective and realize how silly they were. If he were truly a hundred percent straight, he wouldn't have even considered accepting Kenji's feelings in the first place. He also wouldn't find Kenji hot. And he wouldn't have been able to get hard fantasizing about some random guy from a magazine cover.
Now that this was out of the way, Yugo felt like a fog had cleared and he could, for the first time, see things with real clarity. His dilemma was still there, and he still wasn't sure what he should do, but now at least he was aware of the anxieties that had been clouding his judgment. Sometimes, you may know something rationally, but that doesn't necessarily mean you've understood it on an emotional level. Now finally Yugo knew.
