Lianne Bowed her head as Peter passed the last of his knowledge and memories to her. Some was an ancient wisdom that the young peter had no use for, that he left for her instead for his grandson had no skill in magicks as he did. Lianne leaned over the cooling corpse of her first clan-raised friend and touched her hands to the temples of the young Peter.
To him she gave the memories of her friend’s loyalty and devotion, and sealed away for when he was grown, the love his grandfather had held in his heart for his master. She showed him all the secret tricks that allowed a human to travel from one clan home to another without moving the heavy blocks and the many peculiarities of service under his new master. This and many other secrets she passed to the boy. Some she sealed up with the memory of the love between Kian and the deceased Peter, for when the child had grown up. Then, settling her own new knowledge in its places she rose and departed for a moment to the main chambers of sanctuary.
"Peter the elder is dead. Young Peter will be taking his place when Kian is returned to us." She announced. The Vampire lords looked at her with worry and concern. She gracefully pulled out her master’s chair and sat down in it, making Melchia hiss in shock. She was a lot stronger then she looked to move the hefty furniture and much braver to take the place of her lord in his absence.
"This situation stands this way gentlemen. The Serafin Lord has abducted Kain and Raziel. He is intent, from the way he spoke, on torturing them to death and coming back and taking the rest of you piece by piece for torture and slaughter. None here has the power to resist him. He has a charm that when spoken freezes vampires in their tracks. However he is foolish in having messed with my new family he has messed with my whole family. There is one I know of that can bring Lord Raziel and Lord Kain back before too much befalls them and they go mad. I must go outside to call him forth, and the price may well be my life. However I will not hesitate a moment longer, else my Lord suffers too much."
Lianne had to call Reyn. The Old World darkness demon had powers great enough to hunt those of an even greater ilk then her ancestor and slay them. He would be able to bring back the two snatched Lords, and if she bribed him with the two things he wanted most, maybe he would even kill the Serafin Lord, ending the menace once and for all! Her ancestor had told her to watch herself when she summoned Reyn. Called from whatever usually occupied the spare time of a higher-level darkness demon, he would be insane with fury.
She gracefully chalked a circle on the stone floor of the courtyard. Runes to protect and ward against all that dwelled in darkness slowly filled in the space between inner and outer circle. Once finished she stepped into the circle and closed the circle with the final mark. Speaking softly in a now mastered language of magic, thanks to Peter’s knowledge, she called to the darkness to come and bring forth its favored child.
"Reyn Raer River Tyyr I call to thee, come and give your aid to one whose love is lost in the darkness. Demon! I bid you! Appear before me!" She commanded in a soft voice. It made the ancient summons sound more a plea then a demand.
No matter how it sounded to the un-demonic ear it trumpeted its call across the planes of darkness into the slightly pointed ear of Reyn, as he sat at her Ancestors side. Reyn shot up to a standing position, tuned his face towards the continent they had left only a few days ago and then with a deep bow to his old companion he disappeared.
He reappeared outside the circle, his eyes flashing with fury but lacking the madness. He knew who had called, and wanted her to. He had been listening even for a sigh of his name from her petal soft lips. Yet she had chosen to summon him like an unruly lesser spirit! She even had the gall to seek the protection of a circle!
"Why have I, a friend in long standing to your kin, been called in this demeaning manner?" he demanded to know. Once she was certain she had no need to fear him rending her flesh for the offense, she crossed the lines of the circle. "I am sorry truly I am friend Reyn. My need is great and my most noble ancestor informed me that this was how you were called."
He looked at her and saw that her face was pinched tight with emotions barely tied down. What could so upset her that she felt the need for demonic aid? "He took him from me Reyn. The Serafin Lord came and took Lord Raziel and Lord Kain away from me, and he killed old Peter in the process!" She whispered hoarsely, then she fell sobbing into his embrace.
Reyn was slightly confused by her brief explanation. Gently he touched a claw-like digit to one of her temples and relived the memories of the fallen human servant of Kain. He saw her master and his Lord taken away by the hunter they had seen in The Merry Traveler, now revealed as the ultimate foe of vampire kind on the continent. Reyn analyzed the power of his soon to be prey. He was strong, but not equal to Reyn by any stretch of the imagination.
"Please Reyn. Bring them back and you can have whatever you wish within reason. Return with them here and seal the way after you so that he cannot enter so easily again. I want them back and that is all I’ll ask. Please if ever you had warm feelings for me in your dark heart return my destined one to me." She pleaded.
Reyn looked down upon her with great sorrow in his eyes. Had they met first, she might have felt that overwhelming love, that boundless passion for him. Now as it stood he could only hope to earn a single day from her and maybe a barrel of distilled darkness in the bargain. "If you agree to that which I desire I will bring the two moon walkers back to you." He said.
She detected the note of sadness in his voice and looked up into his eyes. She saw the forbidden longing there that many men had in their eyes now that she was taken. "Oh Reyn!" She exclaimed. His sorrowful nod was all he gave in answer. "A week then of my time and a barrel of distilled winter darkness. Will that do for this demeaning fetch and carry?" Lianne offered.
He nodded with a twinkle returning to his eye. Then with a quick kiss to the back of her hand he took three steps backwards before he disappeared. The deal was sealed and she would gladly pony up to her end if he could only pull through with his. Lianne made her way back into the main chamber and sat back down in her master’s chair again.
"Well now what? Lord Rahab asked. Rachelle was snuggling in his lap, afraid that she might loose him as soon as she had found him. "Now we wait. With the one I propositioned for aid it should take very little time." Both Rahab and Dumah had stared at her strangely then. "Propositioned?" Dumah asked?
"Lord Dumah. Think about me for a second. What does every male being from sixteen to sixteen thousand want from me? It is one of the few bargaining chips that would be worth anything to a being with enough power to come up against the Serafin Lord and get our Lords back. He has also agreed to seal the ways into sanctuary and the surrounding realms that are open to magical travel. That will keep us from having enemies pop up in our very laps. All in all a good deal don’t you think?" Lianne teasingly informed them. She knew her point had been made when Lord Dumah grunted hoarsely. With that very same look of lust in his eyes he had sported the first time he saw her.
"Indeed this one is worthy of holding our brother’s seat for him while we await the return of our kin." Turiel added with a nod in her direction. As second oldest this giving to her of mild deference was a great gift. He had recognized her ability and in the absence of the other two, he led the council of vampire Lords, so they too must accept his decision.
Young Peter was standing near her waiting for the return of his master with anxiousness spread over his features. She placed a hand on his shoulder and had him fetch Matthew, who waited outside. "Have you the flasks as I asked?" She inquired? Matthew nodded. Instead of small flasks though he had large wineskins filled with the herbal tonics for healing, dissolved in artificially preserved blood.
She took them and had Matthew wait on the other side of her master’s seat from the young Peter. The wait only lasted a few moments more. Reyn flashed into being in the middle of the pillars. He was so dead center that it seemed he had used the broken stones of elemental power to reorient himself to return. He was actually on the council table holding the two Lords, one under each of his arms.
Reyn’s natural form would have stunned her under any other circumstances, but she focused now on the unconscious vampire under his left arm. Lord Raziel had marks on him that suggested he had already been put under torture. Kain was yet conscious, and he spoke. "Thank you demon for your aid. Though I wish it had been timelier, still do I appreciate it."
Reyn’s reply was a somewhat flippant one. "Thank her. She is the one that will pay for my services. On your behalf she did contract with me for the two things I most desired. In exchange I retrieved you and sealed the magical pathways in and out of anyplace on the continent. Here is your key to those pathways. You can if you judge it needful give such a key to your sons as well. Lianne will also have a key that cannot be taken save as a gift freely given. She is the last of the magickers on this continent who have need of such a key."
Kain turned to see Lianne forcing healing tonics down his most beloved son’s throat. She looked at him and gestured for someone to approach him. Out from behind the high back of Raziel’s council seat came the grandson of his favored servant. He was wearing Kain’s livery, and not that of the lesser training servants, he wore his Grandfather’s badge of office along with the golden trimmed black livery. "I Trust that you and the one called Matthew will see properly to my son before you pay the demon his price Lianne?" He finally asked.
She nodded and continued to feed healing potions and bright magic energies into Raziel. His wounds, though supernatural in their stubbornness, were beginning to heal. Slowly he returned to wakefulness, groaning with pain. When his senses perceived that his woman was attending to him with all her great skills, he reached out and she went willingly into his embrace.
"I will leave you to it then. Once I return from Peter’s grave we will begin anew with our council of war." Kain intoned gravely. "Young Peter, lead me to where they have lain out your grandfather. I would pay parting respects to he who served me so very well." He told the frightened little boy at his side. The lad turned and headed out the doors, with his new master not far behind.
Once he regained enough good sense to understand Lianne informed Raziel of her deal with the demon. "Deals with demonic forces are unbreakable Lianne. Even if there were a way out of it I would not ask you to sully your honor by going back on your word. Do what you must and return to me as you may." Then he kissed her very softly and released her to go to Reyn.
AT that moment Kain was standing in the ruined chapel, beside the body of his most favorite and loyal servant. The young Peter was standing hands crossed in front of him in a very familiar pose. There were few differences between him and his grandfather at his age. The lack of magical gifts might or might not change, yet Kain was certain that he would grow well into his position as body servant to Lord master of all the vampires of Nosgoth. The boy however was still to grief stricken to keep from the silent tears that he cried. Obviously he had loved his grandfather very much, just as Peter had loved the boy in order to chose him as successor to his position.
"Come forward boy and say your goodbye." He whispered. The lad was quick acting, just as his namesake had been at that age. He came and knelt by the stone bier that held his ancestor, now passed on to peace. "Grandfather, Lord Kain is back safe just like you wanted. Miss Lianne came through, with her friends help she brought them back! I’ll do my best to take real good care of everyone, him in particular, just like you told me to. Were ever you are now I hope you are happy." The lad said sincerely. His tears flowed freely down his cheeks and once he had said his piece he choked a few times before breaking down completely.
Kain stepped forward and spoke to his departed servant. "I shall always remember you, your love, your bravery, your loyalty. Some day when this boy is grown he will learn all that Lianne sealed from him. At that time I will tell your tales to him, regaling him with the wonders that made up the person of his grandfather. May you sleep well in your much deserved rest my beloved."
Young Peter felt something wet and thick fall onto his hand, where it rested on one slender knee. Looking at it he realized it was the tear of his new master. Kain wept unashamedly at the loss of his hearts keeper. Choking ragged sobs that held all the pain of all the loss he had seen in his several millennia of life. Peter’s loss had been the last one that he could bear without the cleansing tears of grief.
As he cried he did not notice how the remaining family of peter were gathering around him. The first thing he did notice was when young Peter rose from the floor and came to him, hugging him around the waist, which was a high as the boy could reach. He stilled his sobs, though the tears continued to flow unchecked. Young Peter’s mother appeared at his side.
She placed a hand over her sons two small ones, where they met around Lord Kain’s waist. Though nearly forty themselves, she and her husband who followed a bit behind looked like lost children. She placed the other hand on lord Kain’s shoulder then she addressed the still figure resting on the slab. "Father, at this moment the tale of your sacrifice has spread through out the clans. I am so proud of you, dying as you lived, in loyal service. Yet I wish you hadn’t! We still needed you! Now we will all have to get by without you or mother! Why oh why did you have to leave us!" She said. Then she to began to cry.
"We’ll miss you a lot you tough old man." Was all that the husband said, but his grief too spilled over in silent tears. Many other members of the family came and stood in their silent contemplation. The grief of their hearts spoke loudly to the one whom was kin only in heart.
As soon as all of his friends and kin had gathered together, filling the chapel, and even overflowing to the outside young Peter’s mother spoke softly into his ear. "I think he would like it very much if you carried him to his final place of rest my Lord." Kain just nodded and releasing his young servant, he took the shell of his former servant in his arms.
As he exited the chapel, the impact upon the humans and vampires of Nosgoth made by this one man became apparent. Most all of the vampires had met this Peter in their dealings with their master. They stood many weeping just as Kain was, lining the paths with rank upon rank of moon walking Lords. In and among them, stood their human clans. Most all were related to Peter somehow, as all the clans intermarried between strongholds. As he passed the first few humans they began tossing petals and feathers along the path. Tokens that superstition said would ease the path of the dead unto paradise. By the time he had taken three steps along the path towards the grave site at the top of the hill he walked upon a sweet , soft fragrant carpet, his clawed toes not even sinking in enough to touch the stone cobbles of the path.
Men most professional who had seen much, much death had already dug the grave. They to were weeping. It was to them a day they had not though they would live to see. Here was Peter, most treasured of Lord Kain’s servants being laid to rest. Many had thought that old Peter would be offered the moon walker’s gift by Kain. Indeed he had been, yet Peter had refused the immortality of the night, saying, " I wish to some day find my rest my Lord. You say that you love me, if it is indeed as you say then let me have this life and this life only. Someday my memories will be all that remain of what is between us now. That way our sharing will be all the more valuable."
Only Raziel, who now stood at his father’s side, knew of this, and in his heart he knew that Kian did not regret that gift. Peter had been one eager for passing recently, all of his losses had weighed heavy as well. That time had finally run out in such a spectacular manner showed that even fate held respect for old Peter. Raziel wiped his eyes, and then looked up to see Lianne, leading the demon, now back in his vampire hunter’s shape, along by the hand.
She waited until Lord Kain had acknowledged her then she spoke. "Though I knew him only these last few weeks of his life, I saw in him something most wonderful and bright. Peter’s heart shown with the light of his Courage, Faith, Loyalty, and Love until he gave his last breath. He was such a one that all could revere him without a second thought. May the goddess embrace him at the end of his swift flight to paradise!"
Lianne, it seemed, had the orator’s gift. She had said what every heart and mind wished to say in words that rang simple and true. "May the Goddess Embrace Him! " Several thousand voices echoed. Having said it she handed to each of Kain’s sons and each of Peter’s close family members a yellow rose, forced to be open a little by her magic, even though it was night.
They each placed the rose inside the walnut hued wooden coffin with the shell of old Peter. A last rose she gave to Lord Kain. It was the rose of perfect love. A blossom that represented with it’s coloration the perfect harmony of hearts.
It was white, with a trace of red around the top of each petal. "The love we shared was as this rose is Peter, dear pure friendship with a kiss of passion upon the lips. Go with the goddess my dearest heart." Kain said softly. Then he placed it in Peter’s cold hands, that he remembered to be so warm and gentle, closing them around the stem.
The coffin was closed and it slowly began to lower into the chill grave. Kain began to weep again. His sons gathered round and offered what comfort they had to give to their father in the midst of their own grief. It was then that something wonderful to behold happened. In later days Kain would remember it and be comforted by the thought of the event.
A glow emanated from the freshly covered grave. Soft white soul light glowed forth and took on the shape of a young and ruggedly handsome Peter. In one hand he held the rose that Kain had placed in his grip moments before. On each side of him a woman in flowing white appeared. Peter rolled the ghost rose across his lips then caressed Kain’s with them, a soft affectionate smile of farewell upon his face, before he allowed the women to lead him into a shaft of moonlight where they all disappeared.
}} Author’s Note: WAHHHHHH! I hope you all cried at least a little with that one;,,,,,( (I did and I had to write it, which makes typing three times as hard when you are blinded by tears!) I am toying with the idea of doing a separate little back-story of the Love between Kain and Peter and how it came to be. Thoughts on whether this is a cool idea or not & if it is something you would care to read will be most appreciated! Don’t forget my loyal & much loved fans to REVIEW! {{
