The tranquility lounger opened with a whoosh of steam and heat as the dark dank underground vault’s interior came into view once again, causing Andrew to take a deep breath.
Even with as heavy as the vault air tasted, it was still relief to Andrew that he was able to breath again. The tranquility lounger had air flow, but the claustrophobia Andrew had been starting to endure had caught up with him by the end of the simulation and he was glad to be breathing any kind of air. Another pod opened across from Andrew and an older gray haired man stepped out of the lounger on shaking legs, looking around him in wonder. When his eyes fell upon Andrew, he knew. The man slowly approached Andrew as the younger man simply stared on, his mouth slightly ajar. Tears touched the older man’s eyes as his hand gripped Andrew’s shoulder. And for a few moments, neither man could speak, but simply stand in awe of each other. --------------------------- Martha Crowne had grown tired of Megaton’s dull steel structures and the famed and now defunct atomic bomb at the town’s core. The people no longer made life interesting for her. The only true friends she had made in this crazy town were gone, leaving behind one. Gob had been kind to her, and Gem was growing more excited over her coming attraction every single day. She did not know why her mind was so restless. She wanted out and that was all. If Gob truly loved her, she reasoned, he would see the intelligence around leaving this pit of assholes behind. Her anger toward Lucas Simms and especially Nova, whom the vault dweller who held her imagination, attention and love in the palm of his hand had selflessly helped out of a prostitution contract with the vile Moriarty had risen to a hatred. The only reason she didn’t shoot up the place was because she simply wasn’t that kind of woman, and because she had a baby on the way that stayed her hand. Nova’s silence infuriated Martha. Although Andrew had placed himself in danger to rescue her and Gob from Moriarty’s iron clad contract, in the end, when he needed them the most neither spoke up for him. It wouldn’t have mattered, Gem guessed, but the mere thought would have spoken for itself. Gem had been walking around the giant crater for hours, nearly in a daze. Gob had asked if she was alright, but she just shook her head no and left. She had cried, but her tears were now long dried and she just walked in circles around the various catwalks. She knew she had to leave although she did not want to leave Gob and enter the wild wasteland, but the feeling of foreboding constantly kept her voice choked in fear. She didn’t know what was going on, why she was feeling this way, but she attributed it to the fact that wherever Andrew was, there she wanted to be. Her obsession needed to be heard and she felt she needed to be relocated to Rivet City. She had only visited the famous most successful settlement in the DC wasteland one time and had for the most part enjoyed herself while in its confines, but it was only temporary as she was in service to Lucky Harith at the time and they only stayed for one day to hawk their wares before moving on. She reasoned that the security and interesting human settlers inside the former battleship were what were drawing her mind there. She knew for certain that she and her baby would be well protected within the city’s walls, and that’s what had made her mind up for her. That and the fact that she hated megaton these days. Martha Crowne set her jaw and strode upward toward Gob’s tavern. -------------- “Son…” James spoke finally, his voice a hoarse whisper. His hand reached and touched Andrew’s face, the dirt and grime of the wasteland staining his handsome features, and with a few day’s worth of stubble messing up the contours of his normally perfect gotee. “Father.” Andrew said, suddenly unsure of how he felt. Although he had been reunited with his father, Andrew still had questions. “You were supposed to stay in the vault, son. Why did you follow me?” James wanted to know when he found his voice. “I needed to find you.” Andrew stated simply, his eyes narrowing slightly. “This life, this wasteland is not what I wanted for you.” James said, standing back from his son and leaning against a now useless Tranquility lounger. “It was forced on me because you left. The night you opened the door and escaped was the day my citizenship ended. Not that I miss it. Good riddance.” Andrew said, crossing his arms. “Why did you abandon me?” Andrew demanded, serious now. “Do you remember your mother‘s dream? Project Purity?” James asked, looking up with a haggard half grin. “The giant water purifier? Yes, why?” Andrew said. “The waters of life, son. That is why I left the vault. I had found out the piece of technology that I needed to make it work. I didn’t expect for Dr. Braun to be still alive, and insane. But I have found the G.E.C.K.” James explained. “I…understand,” Andrew agreed with a sigh before looking back up into his father’s eyes. “I have been in this wasteland for about two years now, and I have met some of the most amazing people I have ever met, but ive also seen evil as well.” Andrew admitted. “Jenny Stahl is probably my best friend now. Gem has become like my daughter. I love the both of them with my life. I would do anything to protect them, and possibly make life better for them.” Andrew continued. “I should like to meet these people. Any friend of yours is most definitely interesting. But whatever happened to Amata.” James asked. “she was your best friend. Your lover.” “Amata is a self righteous bitch, dad. The thing is, after I was exiled by the overseer, this civil war type conflict started between Amata and some of my other friends from the vault against the overseer. They wanted to open the vault permanently for trade and to gain more citizenship. “somewhere along the lines, I was called in. I received a signal on my pip boy, which is pretty much the only thing those bastards gave me that has any value to me anymore. It was Amata. I fought against it but in the end I went because, hey, she helped me escape and I figured she was still my friend.” “But that changed, did it?” James asked, sitting now on one of the oversized cable protectors that littered the floor of the vault. “In a big way, dad. In a nutshell I solved all of Amata‘s army‘s problems while simultaneously preserving the life of her asshole father for the SECOND time, only to gain the reward of a half-assed thank you from Amata and a second boot out the door. Amata was promoted to overseer when Alphonse stepped down, and the very first thing she did is kick me out of the vault again.” “Is Amata still alive son?” James asked. Andrew nodded. “Yes, she is. I wanted to kill her for her betrayal. But I didn’t. I just left.” Andrew said, his voice quivering from the emotion of reliving the situation. James took his son into a hug as Andrew started to cry. “then you did what was right son. Violence is not the answer to every situation. You are the better man because you walked away.” James said, soothing his son. “That’s true I guess.” Andrew said finally, pulling away from the embrace and wiping his eyes. “If you had stayed son, I hope you understand that you never would have been able to see Jenny or Gem again.” James said. “That may very well be true.” Andrew said. He felt his anger disappear as he talked to his father. He honestly did not feel bad about the situation anymore. He knew that his father was alive and that he had a new future if he could ever reunite with his friends. It was a long shot but he knew he had a better chance now than he ever had before. -------------------- “I am leaving tonight.” Jenny stated matter of factly over a late dinner at the Schenzy residence in Arefu. The day had been long as she had battled valiantly beside Karl and Evan against a well supplied slaver attack on the little town. She had battled for hours before Arefu’s security finally dropped the last slaver and looted the corpses. “You can either come with me or stay here. But I need to break this off with you.” Jenny stated. Karen was rather confused. “Why is that, dear? I thought we connected really well.” Karen said. Jenny stood and cleared her own dishes. “I have to be honest with you. I was drunk when we had sex the first time. Ill admit it was fun and was a whole sight better than my first girl-girl sex. But I am not gay. I don’t understand how anybody could be gay. Dicks and vaginas just fit together perfectly for some reason.” Jenny said, half sarcastic and half real. “you have been living with me and having sex with me for a month now.” Karen said, her anger rising. “That was for security. Nothing more.” Jenny admitted. “Security?” Karen scoffed. “yeah, you know, where somebody does something to ensure that they are kept safe until they can move on?” Jenny stated sarcastically. “you realize that Andrew has probably moved on.” Karen said in anger. “I hope he has. He deserves to be happy. All I know is I cant keep having sex with a woman. Im starting to hate myself.” Jenny admitted. Karen didn’t say anything, but Jenny knew she had really made the dark haired widow feel bad, so she uncrossed her arms and toned down her voice. “look, I really do appreciate your hospitality. Without you I would be living out there and that’s no life for anybody, so truly, thank you.” Jenny said. “don’t mention it.” Karen mumbled as she started to cry. “and youre welcome for keeping the slavers away. They would have liked you.” Jenny said. “yeah they probably would.” Karen admitted. “far as im concerned, you paid us back. If not for your help, we would have been overrun in minutes and sold into slavery. Where are you headed?” Jenny thought for a moment. “well ill need security, shelter, and food. The only place that has all of that that I know if in abundance is Rivet City.” -------------------------- “Listen to me Gob, it isn’t you!” Gem shouted in exasperation. “I hate this town and everyone in it EXCEPT for you.” she continued, “I need to leave. I cant take these people anymore, and im about to fucking shoot Lucas Simms.” “You don’t mean that honey.” Gob tried to reason with her. “not about shooting Lucas, no. but everything else, yes I mean it. I mean the fuck out of it.” “I have to stay, Martha. I cant leave the Tavern. I finally have a good thing going for me.” Gob said resolutely. It broke Gem’s heart. “Youre saying you wont come with me?” Gem asked softly. “No I won’t. I didn’t slave away with fuckin Moriarty for this long only to leave when I’m finally doing good business.” Gob said. “you can start over in Rivet City Gob! Why not do that?” Gem said trying to reason with the ghoul. “Rivet City already has a bar, and besides I have no idea where I would start on that huge boat. Ive already got this here and its successful now, so im staying.” Gob said, folding his arms. “but what about your baby?” Martha asked, tears of anger and hurt starting to splash on her cheeks. “How do I know its even mine? you’ve already had sex with a couple other guys here, how do I know you didn’t fuck someone else earlier?” Gob asked, now shouting. Martha didn’t know what to say. She was speechless. She wiped a burning tear away before shaking her head and turning away from Gob. She simply strode over to the door, and opened it as she left. She certainly would not miss Gob. Success had definitely gone to his head, just as it had done Moriarty. Gem cried as she strode up the crater toward the steel door. A citizen asked after her. “its not like you fuckin care Tommy. Leave me alone.” Gem said as she swung the door open and left as the heavy door slammed shut behind her. As she walked briskly away from the city, she ran into the second best person she possibly could have met out there. “Crow I need your help.” Gem said as she wrapped her arms around him and buried her weeping face into his shoulder. “Martha, what has happened?” Crow asked concerned as he comforted her in an embrace. “I hate this place. They kicked out Andrew and Jenny and everyone else doesn’t mean anything to me. I cant stand it here I need to get to Rivet City, but I cant make it myself, being pregnant and a bit fragile.” she explained. “of course we will escort you, Martha. You need not even ask.” Crow said with a warm smile, which was rewarded with a smile from Gem as well. “Thank you, Thank you Crow!” Gem sang as she hugged him in her vice grip. “Who is this? Is this who I think it is?” Gem asked as she released her embrace and turned toward a woman with long red hair and green eyes. “this, my old friend, is my new bride, Katrina.” Crow said, placing an arm around her shoulders. “Hi Katrina. Im Gem, an old friend of Crow‘s, like he just said I guess.” Martha said blushing sheepishly. “its okay, Gem. Call me Kat okay? Im sure we can be good friends.” Kat said extending a hand. “Oh no you don’t, Kat. Im a hugger.” Gem said with a smile as she pulled Kat into a friendly embrace. “alright. Im sure we will get to know each other well on this trip.” Kat said. “there is no reason to wait, let us travel to Rivet City.” Crow said. “don’t you need to sell to Megaton?” Martha asked. “no. not today, they can wait, I am more concerned about you. So what about Gob, are you leaving him behind?” Crow asked. Gem thought a moment. “I severed ties.” Gem said finally, using Crow’s own words. -------------------- “Im with you dad. Let me help you.” Andrew encouraged his father. The two of them had caught up and now it was time to discuss business. “Son, it is very dangerous.” James cautioned his eager child. “I know danger father. Ive been in dangerous situations but ive learned a lot about the wasteland and how to be safe within it.” Andrew said, confidently. “You are my child after all.” James added, proudly. “Alright, but we will need to make a trip to Rivet City. I need to get back in touch with Madison. Let her know im not dead.” James said. “I am up for anything, dad. it’s a long way from here, but we should make it in a few days.” Andrew said, pulling up the wasteland map on his pip boy and comparing with James’ pip boy. “damn, you’ve been around.” Andrew said, impressed at the many map markers on his screen compared to his more scant offering. James laughed. “Yes I have son. It has been a while, but like weve already discussed, neither of us was truly born in vault 101. This is years‘ worth of travel. I simply put what was on my map into my new pip boy when you were only a few months old.” James explained. “alright if we head out now, we can travel a few miles before dark.” Andrew said. “listen, son. Be careful, things will only get more dangerous from now on. If you embark on this journey with me, then you will face more danger than you are likely used to.” James said. “don’t worry dad. Project Purity will live again. Besides ive beaten super mutants, what else does the wasteland have to offer besides a few petty raiders and slavers?” Andrew asked. “That is not the worst of our problems son. We have a new enemy who are extremely well supplied, well motivated and with a military mentality and a LOT of dangerous new technology.” James warned ominously. “What, the Brotherhood of Steel?” Andrew asked confused. “No son, they are on our side. They are the good guys. I am talking about a much more serious threat to our way of life as well as the entire wasteland‘s way of life.” ------------------------- “to the leader of this town. You have a new leader. Stand down, or be eliminated.” came the voice of a man filtered through his steel power helmet. Lucas Simms lay his weapon down, as did all the rest of the inhabitants of Megaton. “My name is Slade Carver, and we are the Enclave. We need this city for resources of a great war coming. We will be taking everything here, and you all shall be banished to the wasteland.” came the low voice as he leveled his energy weapon and directed his subordinates in fierce black power armor to do the same. The people of Megaton were severely outnumbered. Their 60 or so residence were no match for the hundreds of Enclave troopers ready to overtake the town. “but we will all die in the wasteland.” Lucas Simms protested as about 10 former Megaton residents took off toward the gate and the relative safety of the wasteland. “that was an order sanctioned by John Henry Eden, president of the DC wasteland himself, and this is your last warning.” Slade ordered, his voice heavy with grave warning. “No, we will stand our ground!” Lucas shouted as he picked his Chinese assault rifle from the ground. With that Slade Carver simply nodded his head and in a firestorm of bright red beams, within seconds the entire population of Megaton were reduced to ash. Lucas Simms, Gob, Nova, Dr. Wolfe, Lucy West, the Stahl brothers and all the rest were reduced to nothing in only a few seconds. And Megaton was suddenly no more. “Come to think of it, the hard way was not that hard.” Slade Carver commented evilly, “Alpha team field strip the bodies. Beta team, you cut open the door to the armory. Delta, you guys roam the homes and pick up anything of use. Bring all of your spoils back to the vertibirds and load them. Tomorrow we will ransack all of this metal and in the future we shall have a brand new Enclave mobile base! Go now and carry on the Enclave’s will!” came the booming voice of Commander Carver. With a single shout the Enclave soldiers went to work obtaining resources from the now empty town of Megaton. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
