A/N: Lookit! An update! And a long one, at that!
Lady-Darkstreak: Thank you for the vote of confidence, but please hold your applause for the end. I feel like I'm getting rewarded for nothing otherwise.
donalgraeme: As nice as it would be to write, "I love you," "I love you, too," and then they screwed like rabbits, the end, Robin would kill me, so there's gonna be a few things between then and now.
Tom: Always glad to help someone find an obsession. The updates should start coming quicker now that we're getting to the bulk of my storyline.

Rule #25: Two can keep a secret—three, if one is dead.
The quiet of the dawn was broken by the insistent hum of a phone vibrating against a hard surface. Since the body next to his did nothing more than stretch and shift a bit, Phoenix let himself forget about the tiny intrusion into his peace. He was pleasantly warm, still caught in the golden tendrils of both restful sleep and visceral release, making it easy to ignore the interruption. It was still early enough that the weak winter light had yet to crawl under the curtains and that was fine by him. They were on holiday now, which meant there wasn’t a single reason to get up any time soon, if at all. Maybe he could convince his bedmate to stay this way all day? He drifted through incomplete thoughts and partial plans for how to spend the free time granted by the weirdly placed school break, slipping back into sleepy contentment…
…when the phone buzzed again.
And then again.
And then yet again.
Beside him, Razer finally moved, no doubt swearing in his native tongue as he hauled himself from the cramped confines of the lower bunk to answer the irritating piece of technology as it danced on the desk a fifth time. Still muttering dark things, he started flipping through his messages. Phoenix rolled just enough to watch his roommate scowl at his phone. He instantly decided that this was the best incarnation he’d seen yet—sexily disheveled and the morning after was a combination that looked good on the other. Especially when he raked a hand through his hair like that… Then Razer was texting something back, lips twisted into that half scowl/half wry smile before dropping the phone back to the desk. Phoenix perked up when he went to the wardrobe rather than coming back to bed.
“Trouble?” he asked as Razer started dressing. It had happened a couple times before, him getting called to help some mysterious friend out of a situation. He was never gone for long, but there was also never an explanation.
“Only if I don’t make the engagement.” Razer paused long enough to offer something of an apologetic look. “Go back to sleep, Rot Sperling. There’s no need for both of us to be up over this nonsense.”
Sleep was firmly the last thing on Phoenix’s mind at the moment. “Five text messages in a row is not ‘nonsense,’” he countered, now fully sitting up. Then he realized how Razer was dressing. “…You’re disappearing, aren’t you?”
“Excuse me?”
The finger point was slightly accusatory. “You only ever pull out that red jacket when you disappear to go do whatever it is that leaves my backside sore for three days afterwards. You don’t tell anyone when you leave, you don’t answer your phone while you’re gone, and you come back like a tar who hasn’t been to port in months. We’re on bloody holiday. Is it really that damn important?”
“Yes.”
Phoenix blinked. There had been zero hesitation in the answer. Razer met his expression with a calm intensity, quite unlike his normal nonverbal hedging. “The logistics are not always desirable, but this is very important to me, for more than a few reasons. This particular instance is even more so than most others. I will not shrug off the responsibility.”
There was nothing to be said against that, and by now, Phoenix knew better than to try. He tried not to feel like a jilted lover being abandoned after a wonderful one night stand while Razer finished with his initial dressing. The other had really started to warm up (well, as warm as a personality like that could become) since the Game from Hell. Maybe it was only because now that the season was officially over, they were spending more time together, but that’s the way things seemed. To suddenly have that impressive wall that kept everyone else out pop back up in his face was a little disheartening. He must not have been able to keep his hang-dog expression in check because the other hesitated before leaving for the floor’s communal bathroom.
“Do you have plans for today?”
“You were my plans for the day.”
For a second, Razer’s ears dipped and his eyes widened a bit in surprise. As delighted as he was to get an honest expression out of his roommate, Phoenix was confused as to why that expression would be shock. Razer was most definitely not the type to kiss and tell, but even the vaguest of allusions suggested he’d never wanted for partners. Certainly somewhere in his adult life, someone had expressed a desire to spend all day with him. Or was that problem? Had he tread into that dangerous territory between flatmates with benefits and something of a serious relationship?
There was no time to question. As quickly as it had gone away, the mask slipped back one, leaving the other man once more calm, collected, and unaffected. “If you can be ready by the time I leave, I will share my secret with you.”
Phoenix stared at the door for a full ten seconds after Razer left. Then the bedding and clothes started flying. It was easily the fastest he’d ever gotten ready for something in his life.
***
Despite the repeated pressings of acceptable behavior and promises to reveal nothing to anyone afterward, Phoenix hadn’t truly understood the scope of what he was getting into until they arrived at their final destination. Even the preview of things to come granted by their brief layover to one of the nicest rental storage untils he’d ever seen to trade cars (a machine even he had to admit was gorgeous), he hadn’t understood. Granted, that might have had something to do with the way Razer absolutely lit up when he started subtly showing said car off, which was nothing compared to the raw sexual heat that sprung up when he slid behind the wheel. Transfixed by the sudden blossoming of his roommate’s demeanor, it was relatively impossible to understand anything beyond how happy Razer was. And frankly, Phoenix didn’t care two wits about anything after that.
Until they reached a deserted dock area in the town over that absolutely swarmed with more people and cars, at least. Then two plus two transformed into five in his head. No wonder Razer was so paranoid about his “secret”—he was involved in some pretty high-end illegal street racing by the looks of things. Getting caught would be a one way ticket out of school, scholarship, and country, and that was the lucky version. So it was with a wonderful combination of nerves and excitement that he followed Razer out of the car and towards a rather mixed lot who started heckling them the moment they approached.
“Well, look who finally decided to show his face,” the one covered in tattoos, including one over his eye, snarked. “I think that fight of yours just made it prettier.”
“Kind of you to deign to meet us,” said another, offering a hand that Razer gripped before being pulled into a sideways-hug.
“How could I refuse such a piteous call from all of you?” Razer smiled back, as much honest humour as baring teeth. “Though considering the degree of skill with which it took to coordinate and execute the text bombing of my phone, I truly wonder if my presence is needed at all.”
The smile was returned. “Would you feel better if I said it was a total accident? Absolute serendipity?”
“Feel better, yes. Believe you, no.”
“You have a friend.” This statement came from the third man in the group, whose lower face was obscured by a plain black bandana, emphasizing the light green stare that had yet to refocus elsewhere.
“Of course.” Razer stepped back and made the proper introductions. Phoenix was introduced as the roommate with no other special intonation or inflection. If any of the other three realized there were other ramifications to the title, none of them showed it. The one who had openly hugged Razer was named Edje and extending his hand as readily to Phoenix, though without the familiar embrace. The one with the inkwork and criminally short ears was identified as Shiv while the last was called Cutter. Shiv offered something of an acknowledging wave. Cutter finally looked somewhere else. Small talk continued between Razer and Edje for a few minutes before being interrupted by yet another person.
“About time you decided to show up,” the tart female voice said, cutting straight through the rest of the noise. “For a while, I half believed that not even an act of God could roust you into being responsible.” She stepped smartly up to Razer, grabbing his chin firmly to tilt his head and inspect the lingering damage from his parking lot brawl.
“Is that why you instigated a revolt among my boys? Hoping their sniveling would grant you my attention?” Razer let his head be manipulated. All that remained was part of his black eye and the still fading bruises on his shins. Everything else had healed well with only faint white lines left for scars.
“If I want your attention, I’ll make sure to aim where your brains sit,” was the cool reply. “And you hardly do your rumours justice. You call this battle scarring?”
“I call it none of your business.” Razer finally knocked her hand away before leaning down to exchange offset kisses to each cheek.
“Well it’s nice to know your charming sense of humour wasn’t damaged along the way,” she responded wryly before noticing Phoenix. Then an absolutely evil grin lit up her face. “Oh, Razer, you brought a friend.” Her words dripped with enough innuendo that Phoenix flushed despite himself.
“Rayn.” The name was said sharply. It barely diminished her smug look. “This is my roommate, Phoenix. Phoenix, the nachzehrer here is Rayn.”
Rayn’s fist connected with Razer’s shoulder for the whatever he called her comment, but she never stopped smiling politely as she then attempted to thread her arm through his. “Nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard—”
“Nothing,” Razer interrupted, catching the wayward hand. In one fluid movement, he pulled her around and wound the offending limb around one of Phoenix’s arms instead. “Which will give you both much to talk about, to my ultimate discomfort, I’m sure. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a buy-in to make.” He turned quickly on his heel and disappeared into the mass of gathered people before anyone could protest.
From Phoenix’s side, Rayn huffed indignantly. She muttered something under her breath, then turned to look at him. The doe-eyed innocence melted instantly as she took in his somewhat open stare. “What?” she demanded, bristling.
“I thought he didn’t like women.” Phoenix balked at the look Rayn gave him. “Like, at all,” he finished lamely.
“Don’t let the tits fool you, boyo,” Shiv snickered. “She’s got a bigger dick than you and the tranny balls to back it up.”
Rayn sniffed delicately. “Yes, well at least I put mine to better use rather than standing around scratching them all day.” Then her smile turned nasty. “And I certainly don’t need them to bend your pussy-boy ass over and make you scream.” Edje and Cutter jeered while Shiv cat-called, making a lewd inference with his tongue. Rayn made a face and gave the group a two fingered salute, which only seemed to send them into further hysterics. She turned and swiftly pulled Phoenix with her, leaving the group to their noise without a backwards glance.
“You’ll have to forgive the Three Stooges,” she said when they were a fair bit away. “The tools they use may be a bit more refined, but they are still just apes. Without their boss monkey around to keep them in line, they tend to go a little wild.” She gave him an assessing look from the corner of her eye. “As for your earlier assertion, don’t delude yourself, sweetie. Razer hates my guts. To be fair, I hate him, too. I find him to be an insufferably arrogant, self-righteous prick, which, alas, seems to be his only good qualities. If he wasn’t so frustratingly male on top of it all, there might have been some hope for him.” She sighed, leaning into him. “Such a pity, really.”
It took a minute for Phoenix to feel brave enough to ask, “Why? If you two hate each other that much…”
“His personality demands boundaries and he pushes to know exactly where those lines are. I simply enjoy pushing back,” she replied. “Besides, people put too much baggage on to those two words; to hate is to love and to love is to hate, after all. Now I will not go as far as to say there is any real love between us, but our continued association has many benefits. Hence, we put up with each other’s continued presence despite the antagonistic nature of it all. I believe the proper term for us is ‘frienemy.’”
“Sounds masochistic.”
“Perhaps,” Rayn hummed. “But we are also never in doubt of where we stand with each other, either. We share a special level of honesty because we do not hold back out of fear of bruising someone’s feelings.” She paused with a tilt of her head. “You’ve been his roommate all this time, but you still have no clue on how he thinks, do you?”
Phoenix flinched a little, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m a little slow on the uptake sometimes.”
“And God knows he doesn’t make it easy,” she sympathized. “Heavens’ forbid that man ever do something without making it into a production.”
“It’s the only way he gets excitement in his life, I think,” he responded without thinking.
Rayn’s eyes widened a bit in surprise, then caught the same kind of evil glint he saw in Razer’s when the other man was feeling playful. Suddenly, those two getting along made more sense. “Indeed. After all, there’s no drama out there quite like a gay man’s drama. Why else do drag shows exist, after all?” She pulled a face. “But let’s be honest here; he’d make a terribly ugly woman. How would we ever sell tickets?”
The ridiculous image of Razer dressed as one of the cheer squad reemerged from the depth of Phoenix’s mind. “Wouldn’t matter—he’d either make everyone else look good, or they’d all be terrible.”
“Before the two of you start trying to coordinate my shoes with my eyes, may I suggest getting off the raceway.” Phoenix turned, half mortified to see Razer standing behind him with that cold, blank look on his face. Rayn also seemed surprised, but recovered for it quicker.
“Hm. With that shade of green, I really must insist upon bubblegum pink taffeta, something with frills and sequins and a hundred layers of tulle under the skirt to make it appear as though you’re floating on a cloud of cotton candy.”
There was a definite twitch as Razer lit a cigarette and carefully blew the smoke away from them. “And you call yourself a designer. Go back to Colour Theory 101. While something in the red family would obviously accent my eyes best, that shade would do nothing for my skin tone. Primary yellow would work much better, if you want to be garish, but we both know a dark purple would look best of all. And you only want the tulle because my legs look better in fuck-me heels than yours. Now if you please, get your asses off the track so they don’t get run over.” Then, without batting an eye, Razer turned and walked away.
“Your gorilla feet could never fit into a pair of fuck-me heels,” Rayn shouted at his retreating back. The comment was waved off as he disappeared into a crush of bodies.
“I don’t really think you’d want him in shoes like that,” Phoenix said thoughtfully after they’d retreated to the sidelines.
“True,” she hissed. “I wouldn’t want him choking on the high altitude anymore than he already does.”
“Actually, I was thinking about how difficult it would be to get him to paint his toenails.”
Rayn blinked, sputtered a bit, and then laughed. “Oh you are a cute thing, aren’t you?” She gave his arm a squeeze. “I’ve got rope. We could tie him to a chair.”
Something told Phoenix to shut up before he buried himself any deeper. For once, he listened.
With remarkable ease, Rayn established her own space near the start/finish line. Though there were quite a number of people crammed there, no one pushed or jostled her. Those who accidently did were quick to either disappear or apologize and then disappear. Because she kept her arm secured around his, Phoenix was also allowed the luxury of breathing space. When they had the headspace to think, Rayn explained what was happening.
The races were supposedly run by some guy out of Kras, which wasn’t surprising considering the automotive history of that city. There were whispers of mob connections, but anyone with half a functioning brain could figure that out. Beyond the other sins for purchase, it was large and well organized, including cameras along the various routes that fed back into monitors by the start line. There was even a mouthpiece announcer on premise who watched over everything from his perch on a make-shift stage. It also wasn’t a typical racing set up; the formation of teams, for instance. While the one-on-one ranking was still lucrative, a group could choose to combine their rankings for more. Those races were more dangerous and required more skill to successfully navigate, so their pay-off was significantly larger. It helped even out the competition as well, since everyone was handicapped by their weakest driver, yet still gave that not-as-great of teammate a better chance for a turn over. Since like people tended to congregate together anyway, teams were easy to come by, making such events regular. Those that placed well were then invited out to some high-end event in the spring.
Rayn kept pointing out people and things of interest, but after a while, it all ran together in Phoenix’s head. He simply let her talk, her voice mixing into the thousands of other conversations around them. It felt a bit like walking through a dream, there but not really, disconnected somehow from reality. The feeling might have been acceptable had he been drinking. He was only all too painfully aware of how sober he currently was.
He blinked when a hand touched his face, only then noticing that his escort had stopped speaking. Rayn looked up at him with a mixture of sympathy and amusement. “Overwhelmed?” she asked.
“Like a riverbank in spring.”
“It’s a lot to take in at once,” she admitted. “The first time he brought me, he was still the underdog champion, upsetting people left and right because some newcomer was wrecking their world order. There was no backup and with him racing, I was left to sink or swim alone. Not the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been a party to, but not pleasant either.”
Before he could ask the obvious question, engines started roaring out challenges. Some were deep enough to make Phoenix’s ribs vibrate in time, while others were smooth purrs that glided across the skin in an almost sensual manner. The noise of the crowd tripled, only to be lost under the visceral growling of high-tuned engines. It was nothing like the chug of a prop or the hum of a turbine, but Phoenix felt his pulse quicken all the same. A different type of rush hit when Rayn tipped her head back with an undulating war cry that the squeal of tires answered readily. The first race began as the sun breached the horizon.
***
The whole day was loud and hot despite the attempts to snow, ruled over by the smell of gasoline, burning rubber, and the occasional breath of winter that kept the other two from being suffocating. He and Rayn spent most of their time swinging between their front row seats and the area that was being used as a mechanic’s pit, where they were used as go-fers if they got stepped on one too many times. Rayn was very good at making sure that as him more often than it was her. Once it was found out that he knew engines, even if he didn’t know cars, his help became appreciated, if not out-rightly preferred. Razer endured the teasing that came with the explanation of why he could vouch for Phoenix’s skill with grace, mainly by sending Rayn on a food run before the heckling could actually start. His presence now proven useful, all three of the other “boys” opened up as well, laughing and joking with him.
And Razer…Razer was almost a whole other person. He laughed. He teased and took teasing in return. It was undeniable that he was in his element here, surrounded by competition, cars, and speed, eyes bright as he shifted through the crowds like he owned the ground he walked on. He didn’t do anything more or less than any of the other drivers, but it was obvious his team looked to him as a leader, asking for opinions and strategies when he wasn’t lined up for another heat. On the rare occasion he wasn’t prepping for his next run or actually driving, Razer was up at the front, cheering his people on as vehemently as the rest of the crowd even if he was a bit quieter about it. He offered congratulations, encouragement, and admonishment as they were needed and didn’t brush it off when the words were returned. By midday, it was easy to see Razer and Rayn were actually quite fond of one another under the layers of sarcasm and causal threats. By the end of day, it was also obvious he was quite good friends with the men he raced with outside the standard team dependency, which was a good thing when the rival team for the last race showed up to trash talk.
The movement of the group was so natural and relaxed that it took Phoenix a minute to realize a wall had been formed between himself, Rayn, and the intruders, the leader of which only passingly familiar until Rayn hissed a name under her breath. Though he’d never had the apparent misfortune to meet Erol before, it was easy to see why his reputation preceded him in such an ignoble fashion. Razer reared up last, colder than ice and bearing his bored arrogance like a sword rather than a shield. The exchange of venom with the curly redhead was short and brutal, though there was no doubt that Erol was the one verbally gutted by the time the affair was over.
“Well, he’s in a good mood,” Edje said, breaking the silence left behind first.
“Really, now. How can you tell?” Phoenix asked dryly.
“Because his charming personality only comes through when he thinks he’s got the advantage,” Rayn answered. “He’s a pox on the whole sport.” Cutter made a noise of agreement; Shiv and Edje both made a motion with their hands and spat on the ground.
“Then let’s not catch whatever malady he’s trying to bring.” Razer finally stopped looking at his rival’s long retreated back. “Double check your cars. No one goes anywhere alone,” he said as he turned back to the group, a vicious smile on his face. “Let’s make it perfectly clear the reason he will always be second best is because of his poor impulse control.”
“Do I even want to know what that was about?” Phoenix asked quietly when work for the next race resumed.
“Same thing it’s always about,” Edje said tiredly, once more checking over his car’s engine. “Newest badass on the circuit wants to make a name for himself. Fastest way to that end is to carve it into the hide of the guy already at the top. And he’s got twice the pressure, considering Razer’s reputation.”
“This is only his second year running,” Shiv said, answering the next question Phoenix had. “Came out of nowhere last year with this self-modified clunker and still owned all our asses out on the track every time he drove. Took the Javelin from what’s-his-face in a pinks-only by the end of the season.”
“Only Razer took the title because he loves racing, not because he needed to prove his cock was bigger,” Rayn added. “The only reason Erol’s a threat at all is because he knows speed.”
“Yeah, but he knows jack shit about cars. Such a fucking prima donna because he can pull a few tricks on that glorified crotch rocket of his. Maybe if his ass had stayed there—”
“It’d be some other upstart moron,” Edje replied. “There’s never a shortage.”
“True,” Rayn agreed, “but someone else might not be so prone to violent outbursts when they lose, either. It’s only a matter of time and you know it.” Everything went quiet for minute as some somber thought was passed around. Phoenix caught onto the vibe quickly.
“You’d think he’d try to pull something?”
“A poisonous eel like him? I’d be more surprised if he didn’t.”
“I’d only trust him luke warm and six feet under,” Edje muttered under his breath.
“Preferably in multiple locations,” Shiv said.
“Your concern is touching, but there are other things to worry about at the moment,” Razer interrupted. “Fifteen until call. You can gossip like old ladies after we win.” He pinned Rayn with a hard stare. “And you; quit borrowing trouble. We’ve already discussed this. Should Erol prove to be as stupid as he acts, we will be ready.” Rayn crossed her arms, looking ready to argue further, but ultimately relented instead. Further conversation was forestalled by last minute checks and then the call for all cars to the starting line.
Having finally gotten used to the noise, Phoenix could mostly ignore it and focus on the screens as the race took off past his ability to see. Both teams were decently matched, though their strategies were vastly different. Like their leader, Erol’s team focused on speed, consistently pulling in front on straight aways, but spinning out and scraping sidelines as they tried to turn corners, fighting themselves as much as anyone else. Razer’s team was more technical in their approach, using clean lines and well-times accelerations to capitalize on the time and space the other team wasted. They rode together loosely, allowing position changes as needed while protecting one another from the bullying of any other one car.
The first lap still went to Erol, though everyone else was hot on his tail. By the end of the second, there was a gap between the two leaders and the rest of their teams, one carefully maintained by Edje, Shiv, and Cutter. Razer waited patiently in second place, just behind Erol for most of the final lap. Apparently the pressure became too much; Erol swung around wildly at a corner, obviously trying to either cut Razer off or sideswipe him, but it backfired spectacularly. Instead, he was the one who went into a wicked spinout that nearly wrecked him as Razer’s car danced effortlessly around the mess and took first place cleanly. Erol barely managed to beat out Cutter for second. With the rest of his team woefully behind, there was no way to make up the difference in points. The victory was made even sweeter when Erol’s temper tantrum remained ignored.
A celebratory round of shots was provided by Shiv. Phoenix didn’t know what it was, only that it burned nicely as it went down. After the bursar paid out everyone’s dues, Edje made his good nights, bullying Shiv into going with him. A brief conversation that had Razer handing over most of his earnings to Cutter later, the quiet racer left with Rayn. The last ones left, he and Razer returned to the storage unit to switch cars again.
Though it had to be pretty late, Phoenix wasn’t much interested in returning to the dorms yet, still jacked up on contact adrenaline. He was about to suggest going out to do something else when Razer swept up and over him, kissing him soundly and thoroughly against the still warm car. He growled something against the lips he had claimed as he firmly drew their hips together. Well that would certainly count as something to do with all the leftover energy. Phoenix responded by sliding his hands into the other’s back pockets as his tongue fought back. No longer concerned with losing contact, Razer let his hands drift up, pulling the tie from Phoenix’s hair before threading it through his fingers. But instead of adding urgency, the kiss relaxed. Or rather, Razer relaxed, and though they were both undeniably hard at this point, there was no push for more.
“This will be your one chance, Rot Sperling.” Razer breathed against his temple, pressing small kisses to his skin like the act couldn’t helped. “If you don’t want this—”
“When have I ever told you no?”
A shudder ran through Razer as he sealed their mouths back together. With permission granted, the earlier expected urgency finally showed up. The hands were pulled out of his pockets as Razer pushed with the rest of his body until Phoenix was completely bent back over the car hood. That broke their liplock, so he focused on licking and sucking at the length of neck he could reach. Hands skimmed possessively and with purpose up Phoenix’s arms, down his sides, then back up, pulling his shirt up with it. When enough of the fabric was out of the way, Razer shifted his attention again. Phoenix propped himself up on his elbows to watch his roommate’s fast track towards his groin. His belt and pants opened to insistent fingers and then Razer’s mouth was on him, teasing through the cloth of his boxers. Phoenix groaned, shifting his hips up, unsure of what to do to get more.
The answer was nothing. The tease only lasted a short while before Razer was kissing his way back up. Phoenix sat up completely to meet those insistent lips, shrugging out of a couple layers of clothes himself before helping the other divest as well. The room had a definite chill to it, but between the still-warm car behind him and the man in front of him, Phoenix didn’t feel it much, even when Razer stepped away to get the required amenities. He’d wiggled out the rest of the way out of his pants when his lover returned and felt his breath catch. He’d often wondered what it would look like if the walls completely fell from Razer’s eyes. This wasn’t that moment, just a spectacular preview of it. There was still a disconnect there, a reservation hidden away in the back, but there was also a warmth there that bordered on true affection. The lust was unmistakable, tempered and sharpened by a pride, veiling the possession in the rest of his gaze rather than emphasizing it. And being trapped within that fervent green stare as fingers steadily opened his body up meant Phoenix had to try very hard not to come too soon.
He was more than ready by the time Razer finally slid into him, legs tensing against the broad shoulders they now rested on and back arching. Apparently the feeling was mutual; Razer paused only long enough to get a solid hold on his hips before moving, steady and ardent. Phoenix scrabbled uselessly at the car hood until they found stability, one hand clutching at the arms supporting a fair portion of his weight, the other clinging by fingertips to the top edge. Then all he could do was hang on as he was pushed rapidly towards an end he didn’t necessarily want to reach quite yet, even if his body said otherwise.
So it was a little surprising that Razer came first—that guttural moan and pulse against the backside making Phoenix whine in response, his own cock throbbing in time. He was so close, and holy fuck did he want… More surprising, however, was that Razer neither pulled back, nor truly stopped moving. He rocked shallowly through his orgasm until it finished, dragged in a couple deep, ragged breaths as he reset his feet and grip, and then he was moving again. The pace was a touch slower this time, fluid full-length strokes rather than mechanical pistoning, though it was still as intense. Then Razer started talking, as had become something of a habit recently. As far as the language of lovers went, German didn’t rank all that high, but damned if hearing Razer purr in it wasn’t one of the hottest things Phoenix had ever come across. There was half a second to realize he needed to move a hand in order to get off properly and then he was coming with a shocked, raw cry.
The world faded out a bit, then back in, making his rapid intake of air unusually loud to his ears. His lower back was more than the usual uncomfortable and he could feel fingers rhythmically kneading into his hips and thighs. He got the coordination together to open his eyes as he tried to put his brain back in order. Then he found himself staring up at Razer again, who now had a mostly unconscious smile pulling at his lips. A pang of desire shot through Phoenix, straight back into his still half-hard cock. There was a twitch and then a small gasp when he realized the reason his lower half wasn’t the normal type of unhappy was because Razer was still very hard himself and still very much seated inside Phoenix. The smile on Razer’s face edged towards a leer as he shifted, pulling back and thrusting forward again in a smooth, languid movement that had Phoenix arching into it despite the burn in his muscles.
Razer made it easy forgot all about them before long.
***
“Is it always like that?”
Razer paused, like he was trying to decide what the question might really be asking. His hands started kneading at the muscles of Phoenix’s lower back again, though he remained quiet for a while longer after that.
“Yes,” he finally confirmed. “It’s always like that.”
Three times on the hood of the car. One hot as hell blowjob in the car on the way back. Heavy petting and wet makeouts that almost turned into elevator sex despite what their RA had said about consequences. They almost hadn’t gotten the door to their room closed either before pushing their bothersome clothes out of the way for the final time. Since only one of those times hadn’t resulted in Phoenix being screwed senseless against something, he felt more than a bit sore and achy, even after a hot shower. Razer had almost apologetically offered the massage and stiff as he felt now, Phoenix wasn’t going to say no even if the evening had been a condensed version of his initial plans for the holiday anyway. And holy damn, he’d known Razer had stamina and a libido that shifted into high gear when he’d been out before, but this had been so much…more acute. Undiluted. How many times did he have to get off alone before he could drive home at the end of all the other nights? Phoenix wasn’t feeling brave enough to ask that question in specific, so he chose the generality.
The quiet nature of the response pushed a couple of things together in his head. The picture was still far from complete, though he was starting to understand the frame better. For a while now, he’d found himself worrying over his roommate’s apparent lack of outlet and friends. Today had certainly proved such things existed, even though having them meant walking a sharp line. If there was one thing Razer excelled at, it was navigating the thing space between opposites.
One niggling little detail still irritated him about the whole affair, however. “How did you ever get into racing?”
Again, Razer stilled, this time withdrawing his hands. He was so still and quiet, Phoenix half-rolled to see what the matter was. The other had withdrawn, face blank though his ears were listing back, looking at a memory rather than the floor his gaze was directed at. Before Phoenix could open his mouth, Razer started speaking.
“…Steffan’s family are mechanics by trade, the whole line, and he loved cars as much as any other member. It was practically impossible to get him to shut up when he was on the subject, so I listened and learned instead of fighting against it. Shortly after we…got together, he put me in a car and taught me to drive. I took reasonably well to the experience until we ran into a pretentious snob who thought looks counted for more than what was under the hood. At Steffan’s urging, I floored it and we left behind nothing but dust. I was very promptly sick afterwards, but caught in those everlasting moments of speed, I felt…right. Free.” He stayed lost in the memory for a few seconds longer, then shrugged it off. “The rest is, as they say, history.”
Tired as he was, Phoenix still spent a fair amount of time staring into the dark of their room after the nights were turned off. He remembered with great clarity and feeling what it had been like the first time he’d slipped from the earth to play amidst the clouds. Every detail had become etched into the core of his being because, as his roommate had said, something about the experience had made him feel completed—where he was supposed to be doing what he was meant to do. That Razer belonged on a racetrack was irrefutable; he’d seen that firsthand. But what could have possibly happened to take all the joy out of the memory?
