The two guards standing watch at the cavern entrance heard the hurried footsteps of someone running toward them. Exchanging a glance, one quickly shadowed the both of them and they moved away from the cavern’s mouth. Cloaked in their protective spell, shielded from view, they watched intently.
Nearing the top of the tunnel, Starr sprinted faster as she prepared to ambush whoever was guarding the left of the entrance. When she saw that there was no guard where she expected one, she turned immediately to defend herself from the guard that would surely be on the right of the entrance. Except, she saw no one there either.
The two guards glared at the elven woman. It was well known that Shin had brought an elf to the caverns. Kattath, the ranking guard, slowly stepped forward, revealing herself.
Starr’s gaze landed on the guard that had suddenly appeared and blocked her path. “Get out of my way!” She growled, adrenaline surging through her veins.
To Kattath’s ears, the words were a meaningless jumble of sounds, but the light elf’s meaning was well understood, even if her words were not. Raising her swords, Kattath shook her head no. The light moved faster than she’d thought possible and she quickly found herself backing up several paces, parrying a flurry of attacks from the light elf before she was able to launch a counter attack.
Relyn gripped his dagger tightly as he silently observed the fight. The light elf was surprisingly good. The two women broke apart briefly and he saw that she was cut and bleeding from several shallow injuries. His gaze turned to Kattath, finding that she also sported cuts and slashes.
Starr lunged swiftly, feigning a direct frontal attack. As Kattath moved to one side, she sidestepped and raced past the guard. Putting on a burst of speed, Starr barreled ahead.
Revealing himself, Relyn attempted to intervene and block her escape path.
But Starr wasn’t having it.
Starr saw the dagger in his hand, but it was the bow across his back that she focused on. The spikey monstrosity was powerful. Flinging the hated sword to the ground, she launched herself at him.
So shocked by the attack, Relyn paused. It was his undoing. He was knocked over as she collided with him. His quiver of arrows hit the ground, dislodged from the leather strap holding it. The bow itself she’d already torn away from him before he’d even realized it.
Kattath cursed savagely as she flung one of her blades at the quiver of arrows. The blade pierced the quiver, anchoring it to the ground.
Starr’s blood momentarily froze as her hand brushed across the sharp edge of the sword, clutching a small handful of arrows. She’d narrowly avoided having her hand impaled.
But she now had a bow. Precious few arrows to work with, but she’d take them. Springing back, she put distance between herself and her captors, nocked the arrow, and fired.
Relyn dove to the side as soon as he saw the arrow pulled back, avoiding being hit. Kattath’s pained grunt informed him that she wasn’t as lucky. While not as powerful, light archers were still a force to be reckoned with. They were better at close range simply because they were a bit quicker and could fully draw and fire even in close combat. Ripping his spare dagger from it’s sheath, he hurled it with pinpoint precision at the elf’s rapidly retreating form. His ears caught her pained cry, indicating that he’d hit her. However, he turned his attention to Kattath. She needed prompt attention as his arrows were coated in a lethal poison which caused hemorrhaging.
The archer wouldn’t get far anyway. His daggers, like the arrows, were coated in poison. Unlike the arrows, the poison on his daggers wasn’t lethal. It caused paralysis. In a few hours, the light elf would be unable to move.

Hours passed as Starr weaved through the dark forest, making for the border between dark and light elven territory. When she came upon a creek that she knew originated in the center of the light elven village before flowing downstream, through the light forest and into the dark elven territories she paused in dismay. The bloodied water told a grim tale.
But she was close to the border now. Soon she would cross into her homelands…and then what? It was clear now that her village had fallen. If she continued, she would run into the dark elven forces that had destroyed the village. Her gaze followed the water, absently wondering how the residents of nearby Gludio territory were faring with the now contaminated water supply. With a mournful sigh, she realized that she couldn’t save the village by herself. She’d need help. With one final look in the direction of home, she resolutely turned toward Gludio.
As she took off, she felt a strange sensation in her feet and lower legs. It was as if they were falling asleep. And they felt unnaturally heavy. She thought back to her brief fight with the dark elves. They’d each managed to injure her. One of them must’ve coated their weapons with something. Cursing, she broke into another run. She had to make it to Gludio territory before she could no longer move.

Micardrin stalked silently through the dark forest, looking for any light elves who might’ve run from the village. He’d already sent most of his platoon home with three prisoners. The two males wouldn’t fetch much adena, but the female would. He remembered the way Shin had looked at the prisoners. He’d clearly wanted to help them, the fool.
But he hadn’t been so foolish as to attempt to help them. No, he’d kept his mouth shut instead of voicing his opinion on their treatment. Smart move on his part.
Up ahead, he spotted a faint flash through the trees. Silently he darted forward and caught up to a light elf. Staying hidden, he observed her. The first thing he noticed about her was her lack of armor. Oh, she was wearing armor, of a sort. But, it clearly belonged to a dark elven woman as it showed far too much of her flesh. His eyes fairly gleamed as they roved over her. She’d already gotten into several fights since she was already injured.
Drawing his twin serrated swords, he stepped into her view. “How very interesting…” He drawled slowly. “It appears you are trying to get back to your lands. Who caught you, hm?”
Starr reacted quickly and fired off an arrow. Micardrin’s blade whistled as he expertly flicked his wrist, knocking the arrow out of the air.
“Tell me, who gave you that armor? And I do use the term ‘armor’ lightly. Even from here I can tell it’s not a true set of armor.” He stalked closer, carefully dodging her arrows or knocking them aside.
Breathing heavily, Starr gathered her energies and channeled them through the bow, the crackling of the stunning shot sounding weak even to her own ears. The bow flashed as the shot was released, but to her utter horror, the dark elf in front of her merely braced himself and absorbed the impact. As he relaxed his stance, he tilted his head, popping his neck. “Is that all you have for me, precious?” Without warning, he leapt high in the air, the blades raised to strike, face twisted in a silent snarl.
Starr jumped backwards quickly. But he advanced equally as quickly. Within seconds, he’d struck the bow numerous times and finally succeeded in knocking it out of her hands. As she fell to her knees, he put his blade to her throat, an expression of victory on his face. “I’m going to have fun breaking you, precious.” He intoned darkly. Unlike the other female, this one still had fire in her veins. She’d fetch a fine price on the market. “Stand up.”
She shook her head and pressed her throat against the blade firmly. “Kill me.”
Micardrin’s eyes narrowed in anger. “Do not think to be ordering me to do anything. If I decide to kill you, I will do so, make no mistake. Stand up!” When she refused, he leaned down and yanked on her arm, pulling her to her feet harshly. As soon as he got her upright, her legs collapsed under her and realization set it. She couldn’t stand. “Ah. I think I see the problem, you’ve been dosed with gelsemium. Nasty plant.”
Starr glared upward at him, anger coursing through her.
He stared down at her, deep in thought for a moment. Gelsemium’s antidote was rare and he didn’t have it with him. It would take hours to wear off on it’s own. With a sigh, he knelt down, pulling a scroll from his satchel. He hated to use it so close to home, but he had no intention of carrying her back, nor did he intend to stay out here with her while the effects of the poison wore off.
Stepping as close to her as possible, he activated the scroll.
When Starr next opened her eyes, she found herself in a similar set of rooms as she’d had when Shin had caught her. Except, they were clearly not the same. These were darker, in both color and accessories. Before she could get a better look around, she was snatched off the floor. A pained yelp escaped her as her arm felt as if it was being ripped out of the socket. She was half dragged and half pulled upright before being flung against the wall, and shackled in place.
Micardrin’s face twisted into an expression of perverse glee. “Oh, I do so look forward to the fun we’re going to have together. But first, I have a few things to oversee. But when I return, we are going to have such fun together…” He reached out and trailed his hand along her cheek and down her neck. “I need to find out who crafted your leathers.” His fingers worked the buckles quickly and removed the first layer of tough outer leather.
Starr used all of her strength to kick out at him, willing her legs to move despite the paralysis gripping them. All she managed was to flop uselessly against the wall…
