Please review if you like how this is going or not. All feedback is appreciated. Running for one’s sword with plate armor only from my hips down, with a bear charging at you makes one wonder how one gets into such situations. I slide across the dead leaves of the forest, grabbing my sword, and taking a stance by the bottom of a tree as the bear comes within reach. I hear the groan of a string being pulled back on a bow and look up, seeing Rose only wearing linin pants, a shirt ripped from the front and leather boots, her wild hair framing her face like fire. Yeap, she is the reason I get into any situation these days, but looking like that she can lead me anywhere she likes. Taking my sword, I charge the bear, and as he swipes his large paw for my chest, I flatten to the ground; knees bent and cut his throat. Whistling followed the sounds of impact are heard above me as Rose fires at the bear. I scramble upright as the bear stumbles from his wounds, quickly taking my sword and piercing his neck at the spine to finish off the poor creature. “Told you I was going hunting.” I called up to Rose. “I think you got a lot more than you bargained for in your hunting.” She replied. She jumped down from the tree, walking over to me, her shirt flapping back and forth to give peaks over her heady breasts. Trying not to just look at her chest was becoming a challenge. Rose sighed and said, “We have been gone to long from camp already. We have to head back, especially if we really are going to eat bear.” Standing on her toes, she brought her lips to mine for a quick peck. I took my arms and held her close, deepening the kiss she started, teasing her lips until it was obvious that mouth had been up to something. Leaning back, I whispered , “Not really hunger for bear, more for a little grey warden myself. Had to half a little to hold me over.” “Little? Oh Alistair, you were doing so well.” “Oh, didn’t you know? The little grey wardens always taste the sweetest.” I smiled at her and began redressing myself. As we reassembled ourselves, we bantered like this back and forth. We also did our best to hide the fact that underneath our armor, our tunics had been ripped clean through. It took us nearly 20 minutes to find where I had thrown one of Rose’s gloves among the brown dead leaves. We field dressed the bear and took the hide. With winter coming, a bear fur would be a nice addition to keep us warm. When we got back to camp, Zevron had settled in near the main fire with a tent covered in tribal signs. Tonight, I would avoid him, but stay aware. I mood had been significantly improved since earlier, and didn’t want that ruined. The rest of the night went by as normal as it gets with us: Oghren passing out with a flask after cooking the meal, Shale and Leliana discussing their mutual love of shiny objects. Wynne sent me many knowing smiles that unnerved me; I thought Morrigan was the scary witch. Rose went on watch first, I had a hard time not enjoying the view as she walked off. I retired for the night, and sleep found me quickly, with thoughts of despite all the problems in the world, at least I have Rose to make it all worthwhile. My dreams rarely are not of darkspawn. A familiarity to my surroundings came to me, an eerie feeling that reminded me of the circle tower. Looking around, I was in a tower with elegant white columns. The floor shined bright from light above, a griffin inscribed on the surface. Looking beyond the columns, one could see far off mountains and how far below the trees line resided. Leaning against a column with his back to me was a figure I will never forget. His crossed swords on his back and tied back black hair would be recognizable anywhere. Somehow, I knew I was conscious in the fade and further that Duncan stood before me. “Duncan, please tell me something that only you would know about me, so I know you’re not some demon trying to trick me.” “When you first came to the Grey Wardens, you had your guard constantly up. You were worried that no one would accept you, as you had been treated in the past in Redcliff and the Chantry. You used to be very shy around women. You occasionally mumble about cheese in your sleep. You once asked me if Grey Wardens even get to have a sex life and I said…” “Yes, yes I remember that…well. Ok your Duncan. I am so happy to see you.” “Alistair, I know you mourn my death as you do all the others who fell at Ostagar, but remember we all stand behind you and Rose here.” From the undefined ether of the room, more Grey Wardens came into the large room. “We all know you two can defeat the blight, but time is short so we must skip pleasantries. From the fade, we can see the twists and upcoming shadows of the future, before they clarify into your present. Ferelden cannot survive a blight and civil war simultaneously. You must bring the nation back together, in order to do so; you may have to take up your birthright.” “Duncan, no one is going to listen to me on that score. You know I have never wanted it.” “That is so, but you’re the surviving son of Maric, our former king. That makes you a prince, like it or not. Whether you become king or not, is not as much of an immediate concern. People need to know who you are, so that they will listen to you, even if they don’t believe in your claim.” “Why can’t I just use my voice as a Grey Warden and how we must unite to save our people from the darkspawn? The people must know of Ostagar and Lothering by now?” “People not directly affected by those events think of them as random uprisings of darkspawn. No one believes that an Archdemon is even a possibility. It does not bother you as much as you are saying to just say your Maric’s son. You are more worried what Rose will think. Before I died, I could easily see you falling in love with her even if there had been no blight.” “What are you saying, you would have encouraged it? I not exactly sure the moment it happened, but yes I know I am in love with her. I am just unsure how she feels for me, probably a distraction from all the bad around us. I should only be worrying over how to save Ferelden, but I can’t help it that I am a man who wants the woman who seems to complete him.” “Alistair, you wouldn’t be you if you didn’t care for her as you do. A ruler who doesn’t love is more akin to a tyrant. Answers about how things will go between you will be resolved in time. She needs to know however, the whole side you have been hiding. You must work as a team, for good or bad. Gray Wardens rarely fall in love with anyone, our duty always comes first, and that may happen to you. I had a love in life, one that was quite short, but I would not trade that time for anything, not even more time to live.” Duncan walked over from the pillar and laid his hand on my shoulder. “This is your moment, enjoy what time you have with her while it lasts. Trust her to accept you. There are multiple endings to this tale, some happy, some not. If you navigate it with her, you may end up with a life you never expected but better than you dreamed. Know that there is another warden in Ferelden that you will meet in time in Denerim. I am not allowed to say more.” “This feels like a dream pep talk.” “I come to you here to give you as much help as I can. Most of this talk is advice of course, but rarely do people realize how crucial their part in a tale is until after the fact. One earthly possession, I would have you take is in a trunk that the elder of the alienage of Denerim kept safe for me. You are about to awake, remember it is time to accept who you are completely and that all of the Wardens are behind you until the day you join us.” I looked around the room, and saw that as Duncan had talked, it had filled with the whole contingent of Grey Wardens from the battle and before, the Wardens of Ferelden. Then starting with Duncan, they crossed their arm to their chest in salute. I returned the gesture and merely replied, “For you, my brothers and sisters, I will not fail.” I awoke to a cold chill in the air. Looking out from my tent I saw from the stars it must be close to 1. I saw that Rose was still on watch, even though she should have retired an hour ago. I quietly walked over to her, seeing even from here the white cloud of her breath and her shivering. As silently as I could, I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her small frame. “Maker, Alistair you are sooooo warm.” Rose purred, leaning into me. “Rose, you should have called someone on watch an hour ago. I can’t have you freezing out here.” I chided, kissing her softly on the neck. “I am not freezing, I have my very own Grey Warden portable furnace to keep me warm. This furnace also has features to tell cheesy jokes and kiss women in ways that should be illegal. “ “I have been wanting to say this for a while, looking for some romantic moment. Our moments get interrupted by darkspawn or bears, so before the lions and tigers come to get us, I have to say how much I love you. Like these stars above you’re a light among all this darkness and I can’t imagine doing all we do without you. Maybe I am being to mushy or forward, but this is how I feel, and maybe you feel the same? “ “Hhhmm let me think. I…” Rose turns around in my arms and kisses my left cheek. “Love…” She kisses my right cheek. “You…” She kisses my forehead. “Too…” She brings her lips to mine, softly with care kissing me. She breaks away, looking into my eyes… “Yes, needs more experimenting to be sure.” She smiles and I give her a quick peck on the lips. “I thought the woods before was a successful experiment, but I am always up for a little science.” I countered. I hear the slate shifting noise of Shale coming over, hearing her call out, “It needs to return to its tent, snow is about to fall and I am the only one who won’t freeze. Squishy things always freeze.” I yell out, “What snow?” as the first visible flake falls on Rose’s nose. Before Rose can protest, I take her hand and lead her to her tent, yelling thanks to Shale for taking guard. I bring her to her tent. “Well my dear, please stay warm in your furs and I will see you in the morning. I have something to tell you, but it can wait.” I say, kissing her on the forehead. I start to walk away, but Rose holds to my hand and counters, “I will stay warm if I have my cute portable furnace with me in my tent. You can tell me whatever you need while keeping the cold away.” “Cute? Not ruggedly handsome? Ohh, Rose you were doing so well.” I jest as she easily leads me by the hand into her tent. Time to tell her what a royal bastard I really am.
