Altius stared at the boy in disbelief. “No way.” He took a step back, holding his hands up as he tried to avoid the truth. “No way.”
The boy was still crying, but he hadn’t moved. He didn’t look at Altius, didn’t look at anything save the ground. His body was quaking, arms almost about to give way when Elara stooped down, catching him. She whispered something inaudible to Altius, but whatever she had said made the boy jolt, looking at her in disbelief. She stood up, glancing toward the vortex of black magic where Tylron was. “You’re going to need to take care of that.”Altius looked over, the sight of the unbelievable amount of power sending paralytic fear into his limbs. “Why? Couldn’t you fight him better than I could?” Elara smiled at him, but there was no humor in it. “No. This is just a shade of my real power. I’m only here to aid you. But now, you need to go.” She turned toward the boy, who was still shaking. “And you need to find shelter. I’ll protect you.” He was about to protest when she flicked her wrist, sending him to his feet and forcefully turning him in the other direction. He gave a hopeless glance back, finally looking at Altius again. Altius squinted, sure he must have been mistaken. But even as Elara dissipated into magic and zoomed into his sword, almost tugging him toward Tylron, he couldn’t shake the image from his eyelids. The boy had the same eyes as his father. The wind howled around him now, being so close to the swirling magic. He heard a crunch under his boot, looking down to see that the grass near it had died and shriveled. The white glow around his sword comforted him, but only slightly. He brought both hands to the hilt of his blade, holding it out as he watched, wondering for the first time what Tylron was doing. It almost looked like he was expelling his magic, but that didn't seem logical. As he thought that, he saw something moving inside of the vortex. It flailed wildly before being flung directly at him, Altius sidestepping out of the way. It crashed into the ground beside him, digging up the ground and creating a crater with its impact. He peered over the side, utterly confused at what he saw. It was Tylron. He looked back toward the chaotic magic, which had not only increased in size, but was now pulsing. Looking between the two, he couldn’t piece it together. Something had to be channeling the magic, but Tylron was right here. And what more, he was obviously out cold. Help him. He glanced around, hearing Elara’s voice. He noticed his sword’s glow getting brighter as she spoke again. Heal him. He won’t last long without help. Altius tilted his head, looking down at the limp body. It was perplexing, considering healing the person who was the entire reason for fighting in the first place. But there was definitely something within the vortex, and it wasn’t Tylron. Altius raised his hands, mentally bringing his magic into substance. He was almost overwhelmed with how much magic came shooting out of his fingertips. He had to cut off the flow almost instantly after it started to avoid damaging his body by putting too much magical stress on it.He stared at his hands in disbelief, which were still glowing when he heard Tylron gasp, taking in several deep breaths. He swiveled his head around, locking onto the black vortex and then Altius. He rolled his neck, several cracking noises emanating from it as he began speaking.“So... I suppose you think I’m the one responsible for all these problems, don’t you?”Altius tore his gaze away from his hands, looking at the ragged man. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”Tylron sighed. “I figured as much.” He stretched, groaning in relief at the feeling. “It’s been too long since I’ve been free.”“Free?” Altius echoed.“My name is Tyler. And I’ve been being used as a puppet for-”A sudden shriek cut him off, both of them almost knocked flat by a wave of concussive force. Altius leapt to his feet, sword in ready position. Tyler was a little slower to react, clumsily getting up as if he were unused to it.The black vortex of magic had gone, only leaving a dark mist in its place. The demonic essence resonating from it, however, was stronger than ever before. A large crash came from within it, and then a bolt of magic, rocketing at incredible speeds came toward Altius and Tyler. While his first instinct was to dodge, Altius raised his sword, the magic splitting in two and missing both him and Tyler, exploding on either side of them.“Yes… he likes to plaaaayyy…”The voice was beyond any horrible voice Altius had ever heard of or even imagined a demon having. It was dark, menacing, but twisted in a way he could only imagine as a line being bent out of proportion. It turned his legs to stone, his arms actually shook with terror. And as he saw it glide out of its misty cloak, it was all the courage he had in him to not simply turn around and run.Though he had left the majority of the mist behind, a veil of it covered its lower half, masking its form of movement. Its upper half got massive quickly, its shoulders bulging and pulsing with magic and head constantly changing shape. Scanning it over, Altius realized that its entire body was constantly changing shape, from box-like to smooth, round to spiky. At one point it looked like it was wearing armor, another like a terrifying beast that needed no such thing. It raised two clawed hands to the sky, clenching his fists over and over. It let out a gust of wind, the very air coming from it sending chills down his spine. Its voice made him wince. “Free…finally… free…”An earthly scream tore his attention away from the monster, seeing that people living in the houses in the neighborhood had finally realized what was happening. A girl was standing in her front lawn, pointing at the demon and trying to run, but her legs wouldn’t let her. The demon slowly turned toward her, one of its hands lowering to point in her direction.Altius’s eyes widened; he dashed forward before he realized what he was doing. He planted his feet against a mound close to the demon, sailing into the air and bringing his sword down, severing its arm entirely, the limb falling and turning to mist. Feeling no resistance, Altius continued and turned his jump into a flip, landing neatly on the ground, surprised he could pull off such an attack. He turned back toward the demon. It was eyeing him curiously, looking between him and its now missing arm. Altius watched in horror as the limb rebuilt itself out of mist, flexing as it came into form once more.“Plaaaayyy…” the voice came again, but the demon gave no physical indication that it was talking.Altius turned and yelled at the girl, “RUN!! GET OUT OF HERE!!” Still, she didn’t move. He realized that she still hadn’t move since he had first seen her. He dashed over to her, realizing he was too late with his rush to defense. She had been literally turned to stone. Her expression was frozen in fear. Another crash sounded out behind him, Altius merely slinging his sword over his back, cutting the magical bolt in two once more. He reached out to the girl, bringing his magic to light once more. The stone slowly began to melt, sliding off of her skin and clothes. Once her eyes were uncovered, she looked around frantically, fixating on Altius in fear. He sent a surge through his fingertips, and the rest of the stone disappeared and she fell to her knees.Another crash. Altius grabbed the girl and rolled to the right, letting the magic fly past them, smashing into some giant piece of metal that exploded upon contact. The giant flare and pillar of smoke forced Altius to shield the girl, feeling a few pieces of debris bouncing off of his back. “Run, go!” He shouted, turning to face the demon once more. It was facing the other direction, and Altius watched as it launched another bolt of magic into a crowd that had formed near the hill. Blood-curdling screams filled the air as he ran forward, charging magic in his hand. Still a good distance away, he let loose the spell. It was surprisingly effective, acting as a physical blow, forcing the demon down. He brought his fist down, slamming it into the ground as Altius reached him, distracting him from the other hand coming around and slamming into his side.Altius felt the wind ripped out of his as he opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. He flew several yards and slammed into the grass, sliding right back next to Tyler. He opened his eyes just in time to see the warlock shoot several bolts of light blue magic at his demon counterpart, each one acting as a grenade as it exploded on impact.“I AM SHEK’RON!” The horrible voice was like needles piercing the mind. Underneath the words was an unearthly wail, almost as sad as it was terrifying. “EVERYTHING WILL FALL!” As he said that, he began pounding the ground, actually managing to shake the area around him, sending many fleeing people to the ground.Altius struggled to get back up, rushing at him again. “Elara, if you’re there, I could use your help right now!” He yelled as he jumped, avoiding the tremors while bringing his sword down on the demon’s head and right shoulder. They sliced cleanly off, but in almost immediate retaliation, the left arm reached out and grabbed him, the grip overwhelmingly strong. As much as he struggled, Altius couldn’t even budge one of the claws as Shek’ron’s head and other arm reformed. Being so close, he could see that while the demon’s form was changing, the juts and forms it took were human faces. This realization was almost thrown out of his mind by the sudden impact against the ground, his head reeling with the force of the blow.Shek’ron slammed him into the ground several times before holding him out, raising his right hand to the boy’s face. Altius’ eyes snapped open as he felt everything being ripped from him at once. It was like the Light, his memories, his feelings, sensations, everything was splitting apart. He thought he would be in unbearable pain if he could even register what that was anymore.A sudden explosion stopped the feeling, loosening the demon’s grip on him enough to swing his sword at its arm, severing it as well. He fell to the ground, landing on one knee, all of the pain from being rammed against the ground coming back to him. He saw Shek’ron reaching for him again when he jumped back, landing a safe distance away just before another explosion engulfed the demon.“Don’t let him catch you!” Tyler yelled, channeling another spell. “I can’t always stop it!”“Stop… what?” Altius said, coughing up a bit of blood. His insides felt like caving in. He was stealing your soul. Elara said calmly, her white magic emanating from his blade. Altius began to channel healing magic into himself as he took in what she said. His soul was being stolen. He felt a surge of pity for any victim of a warlock.Another crash sounded out, Altius seeing what was making it for the first time. It was a lightning bolt striking directly into Shek’ron’s palm, infusing an already existing ball of magic with immense power. He launched it at Tyler, the man grunting as it pummeled his mana shield. Altius got up, his wounds fully healed as he rushed toward Tyler. “There has to be a way to stop him, don’t you know?”Tyler glared at him. “If I knew how to stop him, do you really think I’d let him use my body for so long?”“MORE SOULS!!” The screeching noise came again, both of them looking over to see a small pile of bodies, another being thrown on top by the demon, as lifeless as the rest. He lifted his hand, another person was dragged screaming toward him. It was the girl from before.“Tyler! Now!” Altius shouted, charging a holy attack in his palm. Tyler began forming his own magic, a fireball in one hand and a pulsating orb of energy in the other. Both of them sent them flying just as the girl reached Shek’ron. The combined attacks actually managed to knock Shek’ron down, the girl falling in front of him, dashing away as soon as she found her feet. Go. He heard Elara say. The white glow emanating from his blade brightened, and he took off toward the monster. Leaping over debris, his blade connected just as the demon was regaining his standing. He felt resistance.Altius winced as the shrieking came again, several pitches louder than before. He was unable to cut through its arm as he did before, but he noticed that the wound had sealed itself off, almost like a burn mark. He leapt back, avoiding a backhand from Shek’ron and ran again, bringing his sword down on the demon’s neck, the sword piercing deeper than before. The shriek this time was accompanied by an enormous outburst of energy, expanding in a sphere and flinging Altius back. “NO HURT!!” it screamed, flailing madly. “STOP HURT!! MORE SOULS!!”An enormous explosion ripped through the air, tearing up dirt and stone. Altius held up his hand to shield himself, clenching his eyes shut as he braced for impact. When it never came, he looked up, seeing himself to be within a magical barrier with Tyler. “Get up, kid!” He called, jerking as if every blow on the shield was a blow to him. “You need to get in there! Finish it off!”Altius swallowed the knot that had been forming in his throat. He stood up slowly, flexing his hand. A hard smack landed on his face, jerking his view to the right. “This isn’t time to think, kid!” Tyler yelled. “I can’t hold this up much longer! GO!” He shook off the angry response to his debate and dashed out of the shield, almost immediately unable to see past the storm of dirt.Immediately after he left, Tyler stopped waving the shield, standing up normally once again. Now calm inside the barrier, he hooked his hands behind his back. “You’re playing a dangerous game with him.” He said.
Elara materialized beside him, sighing. “I know. But he’s the only one who can do it.”Tyler closed his eyes, hanging his head. “…if you say so.”Altius kept running, not even sure if he was heading toward Shek’ron at this point. It was hard to see more than a few feet, and he was constantly being barraged by dirt clods and pebbles. He felt his sword being tugged to his right, noticing the glow above the haze of the storm. He turned, almost immediately stepping into a calm pocket. Resting in the center was Shek’ron, ripping at the wounds Altius gave him, his shadowy substance merely reforming, but always leaving the two scars. He froze moments after Altius entered, turning his paralyzing gaze toward the boy. Altius clutched his sword tightly, , afraid that if he didn’t he might drop it.
The air chilled as the demon inhaled, somehow chilling more as it exhaled. “Boy… so close.” The voice had calmed considerably, almost sounding human now. “I…had you… your soul… was mine… is mine…come…” He raised his hands toward the sky again, sighing with his confidence. “..come… to be stripped of purpose…mez drex uri x’ril…” He slammed his arms into the ground, a pillar of stone stabbing up underneath Altius, launching him into the air. His legs went past his head as he flew, looking down and realizing that he was about to land right into Shek’ron’s waiting hand. He raised his sword behind his head, channeling holy magic into it as he swung down, bouncing off of the demon’s arm. It left no mark, but Shek’ron groaned as if it affected him, Altius backing away.Shek’ron whipped his uninjured arm out, instantly forming a small orb of magic in it. Another lightning bolt struck and he flung it at Altius, almost as fast as the bolt itself. Altius raised his blade, deflecting it with the broad side of the blade, sending it directly back at Shek’ron, who laughed as he absorbed it. “Daz rak un’ios kei sin…”A sudden tremor ran through the ground, several shadowy creatures popping out of the earth. They all began crawling toward Altius, who was warily looking between them and Shek’ron, who was also approaching him. Swing your sword… Elara said, the glow returning to the metal. Shrugging, Altius did as she asked, bringing his sword in an intimidating horizontal arc.A trail of white magic flew from the blade, cutting nearly all of the shadow beasts in half, still strong as it reached Shek’ron. The demon held both his hands out, stopping the magic in place, but Altius could tell it was having difficulty. It was being forced back, its claws attempting to close on the arc. The earth was being plowed by the resistance Shek’ron was showing, its shriek sounding out,g rowing louder and louder the further he was pushed back. He reached the edge of his storm, and Altius could see the wind and dirt ripping against his back. Suddenly, as its claw closed, the arc disappeared, and Shek’ron held Elara in his hand by the neck.Altius’ eyes widened as he dashed forward, not realizing that she was the arc itself. Shek’ron laughed, reveling over the unconscious body of Elara. “This insect is what was hurting me… not you, boy.” It said, its grip tightening around her throat. He held another hand toward her, Altius reaching him just as a pale blue essence began flowing out of Elara. As he attempted to swing his sword down, Shek’ron swung his arm out, slamming into Altius. He landed several yards away, watching helplessly as Elara went completely pale, her head drooping lifelessly.Shek’ron’s laughter grew maniacal as he dropped Elara’s body, crumpling in a heap beneath him. Altius held his blade out, feeling an outburst of magical energy coming from the demon. Feeling like he had no other choice, he ran towards it, yelling as he raised his sword up. He brought it down, merely slicing through shadows as Shek’ron reformed, Altius jumping to the side just as the demon’s arm slammed into the ground. In its palm, Altius noticed a small, purple gem, a low wail emanating from it.He felt himself rocketing backward as the demon struck him again, flying to the other side of the pocket in the storm. The demon held the shard up, gloating his victory. “The only hope… I hold… your… only hope…” Sounding almost childish, Shek’ron brought the shard to its chest, Altius gritting his teeth as it was absorbed into his body. Watching in horror, he saw the two wounds he had inflicted close, the power radiating from the demon now at almost unbearable levels. All at once Shek’ron was in front of him, grabbing him by the neck and holding him up. “And now… you, die too…” As he held his hand out, Altius swung his sword once more, clenching his eyes shut.He was flung to the ground as Shek’ron reacted to the blow, screaming madly. In his arm was a massive gash, much like the ones he had inflicted with Elara’s magic in his blade. The demon clutched his arm, glaring at Altius. “You…. IMPOSSIBLE!!” It screamed, rushing toward Altius. He swung again, this time slashing across its chest, sending it reeling backward in agony. “NOOOOO!!!”Altius fell to one knee, using his sword to support himself. He glanced at the blade, seeing no glow coming from it, but there was a glow reflecting off of it. Looking for the source, he saw that it was coming from Shek’ron, from the two wounds he had just inflicted. They were pouring out light, the demon trying desperately to cover them up. Altius grunted as he stood, channeling a healing spell to refresh himself as he ran towards it.“NOO!!! BACK!!” Shek’ron said, dragging his arm in a circle around his body. Almost instantly, a stone barrier erected itself in a circle around the demon. Altius skidded to a halt, unsure of how to proceed when the barrier erupted. He ducked down to avoid the stone fragments, noticing Tyler at the other end of the pocket. He let his hands fall after channeling his destructive spell, yelling at Altius. “Go kid!”Altius nodded, seeing Shek’ron to be exposed once more. The demon was writhing in pain, too preoccupied to notice his fallen barrier. He ran toward it, stepping off of the broken barrier and leaping above the powerful entity, bringing his sword down in a cleaving arc.The demon’s screams were cut short as it sliced completely in two, an immense outpouring of light coming out of it. “N-no…” he heard a weak murmur coming from the two halves, one slightly echoing the other. “M-mypl-plan…” It groaned, the shadows slowly giving way to the light, the demon’s body melting into it. “Y-you…C-curseyo-you…m-mycu-curse…li-lives…”Altius grimaced as the demon’s wail faded, the light consuming it and vanishing. Several purple shards fell to the ground, all glowing with varying levels of intensity. Sheathing his sword, Altius gathered them in his arms, climbing out of the small ring of stone. The storm had stopped, but it had obviously taken its toll. The surrounding area was unrecognizable, any houses were wrecked, the ground was mostly barren of grass, several of the tin objects he had seen earlier were overturned and scattered around the area. Surprisingly, he saw several people climbing out of makeshift shelters, the ruins of the houses, checking the air to see if the worst was over.Altius looked around, spotting the pile of soulless bodies Shek’ron had created earlier, glancing at the shards in his hands. He walked over, unsure of how to return the souls to their bodies when the shard floated out of his hands, hovering down to their bodies, melding into their chests. One by one, the people began to stir, several coughing as they awoke, standing and looking around, gazing curiously at Altius. He gazed down mournfully at the one shard remaining in his hand, looking over to where Elara was.Tyler was kneeling over her body, beckoning Altius over. The boy jogged over the torn earth, clutching the shard. As he neared her body, he could see that she was slowly dispersing into magic, her lower body completely gone. He dropped to his knees, holding out the shard toward her, but it didn’t float out like the others. Pushing it against her chest to no avail, he swung his gaze up at Tyler. “Why isn’t it working?!”Tyler shook his head. “I don’t know. But she isn’t any race I know of. She’s turning into pure magic.” He gestured to her now completely gone legs and vanishing torso. “I’m not sure if it’s even her soul in there. It might just be magic.”Altius looked at the shard, tears welling in his eyes. “She… was the only reason I got here… she made it all possible…”Tyler placed his hand over the shard, patting it gently. “Keep it with you.” He said. Elara’s body had almost vanished, only the top of her cloak and her head still visible. “She might not be completely gone.”“Altius!”He looked up, fighting back more tears at the familiar voice. The boy was running up, stopping a decent distance away. “You’re ok?” He asked, sounding genuinely concerned.“Yea. I’ll be fine.” Altius said, letting his head fall. The boy looked saddened, his outstretched hand falling to his side. “You still don’t believe it, do you.”Altius shook his head. Tyler patted him on the shoulder, standing beside him. “I think it’s time to go home.” He looked at the boy, nodding. “You too.”He nodded, stepping toward Tyler. Tyler patted Altius on the back, beginning to channel a spell that would take them back to the rip between dimensions.“WAIT!”The girl Altius had saved twice ran up beside them just as the spell expanded into several rings, circling around the four of them. Altius looked up at the girl just as the circles closed, taking them all with them. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
