Aleyel glared angrily at Micardrin. “Where is she?” She growled.
“Where is ‘who’?” Micardrin responded evasively.
“You know damn well who!” Aleyel bit through tightly clenched teeth, her fingers flexing around the hilt of her dagger. “Return her! Now!”
Nikvir tutted and stepped between Micardrin and Aleyel, focusing on Aleyel. “I believe I can solve this little dispute. Yes, I know of whom you speak. You speak of the little light elf that Shin brought back with him before. However, there’s a little problem. It seems she escaped and Micardrin recaptured her -- ”
Aleyel interrupted swiftly. “Then you know she is Shin’s…”
“I know that I’ve paid Micardrin quite a handsome sum of adena for the pretty little elf that Shin was so incompetent as to lose.” Nikvir retorted firmly.
Resisting the urge to scream in frustration, Aleyel glared at them. She had to get the light elf back, and soon. She’d been gone for nearly a week already, and Shin was due back any day now. “There are still plenty of light elven women roaming the world, find another.”
“But this one is paid for. And, she’s been properly, uh, ‘trained’, if you will.” Micardrin chortled.
Aleyel’s skin prickled uncomfortably at the lurid expression on their faces. Had they done the unthinkable? Her own face tightened in fury. If they’d harmed the light elf, the tortures of Shilen’s underworld would seem a paradise to what Shin might inflict on them. Not to mention Nathavin, who’d been making it ever more clear that he wholly disagreed with Thiefiell.
“How much adena?” Aleyel ground out.
“You want her for yourself?” Nikvir asked, amusedly. “Now that was a direction I didn’t expect from you, Aleyel.”
She ignored the taunt. “I’ll triple the amount, and I’ll capture another light elf for you.” Nodding to Micardrin, “I’ll even bring her to him to ‘train’.” The very thought repulsed her.
“Will you now?” Micardrin drawled, his voice sharper. He stalked close to Aleyel, only stopping when they were a mere handsbreadth from each other. “I know what you think of me. What you think of my methods of ‘training’. Can you really subject another light elf to it?” He slowly circled around her. “You, Shin, Nathavin… You’re all light elven sympathizers… Is this one elf worth so much that you would willingly put another in her place?”
Micardrin’s gloved hand caught her wrist tightly, squeezing until the dagger fell from her hand. “That’s what I thought.” He cast her aside with a rough shove. “Begone! And tell Shin to keep better track of his ‘belongings’ next time!”
However, Nikvir hesitated. “Micardrin. Wait.” He knelt down next to Aleyel. “Swear to me, right now, that you will honor your word to bring me another light elf. I don’t care about the adena. Just the light elf.”
Aleyel grunted as she struggled into a seated position. “I swear.”
Nikvir shook his head. “That’s not good enough. Shilen’s bond.”
Her blood froze in her veins. That was the bond used by all Spectral Masters to bind their summons to them… She’d be tied to him even in death…
Nikvir stayed silent, refusing to relinquish her gaze. He enjoyed the obvious torment she was going through. He’d always found Aleyel to be rather fetching. But she’d chosen Nathavin, after she’d pined for Shin for a great many years. He’d lost her to those light sympathizers twice. But not again. If she wanted to help the light elves, then he was going to ensure that it cost her, her freedom, and her chosen loves. If she accepted this, then it wouldn’t matter how many light elves she found. He’d never find any of them ‘acceptable’ and that would allow him to keep her bound to him indefinitely.
Micardrin’s eyebrow raised as he began to understand Nikvir’s ploy. It raised further still when Aleyel nodded curtly and placed her hand in Nikvir’s. The spell that was cast was done so rapidly that Micardrin didn’t understand the words that were spoken. But the dark, smoky chains that briefly flashed into view and faded away between Nikvir and Aleyel made it clear, the bond had been established.
Aleyel felt her breathing constrict painfully for a brief second, and her heart felt as if it had been squeezed in a vice. As suddenly as those effects had come, they were gone.
“Do not betray me, Aleyel.” Nikvir warned ominously. “I hold your life in my hands.”
He emphasized his point by holding his hand out, palm side up. A red flame appeared, hovering just above his flesh. He closed his fist. As the flame snuffed out, Aleyel felt the air rush out of her lungs and her chest heaved painfully. When he reopened his fist, the flame flickered back to life, the immense pressure on her chest eased, and air rushed back into her lungs.

Far away, in Gludio, Nathavin steadied himself as the sudden pain he’d felt dissipated. Looking to Shin, he motioned urgently. They needed to get back to their village. Something had happened to Aleyel.
Shin nodded curtly, and the two set about their task with renewed urgency. The commanders in charge of putting together the multi-kingdom military response to aid the light elves were swiftly dispatched. Shin did most of the killing while Nathavin provided protective cover fire when necessary. Once done, they quickly departed the castle and began making their way back to their homelands.

Starr gazed dejectedly at the walls around her and shivered. As a comforter was draped around her shoulders by Aleyel, she pulled it tightly around her. The dark elf was speaking to her, but she didn’t really hear the words. She instead focused on sipping the warm drink. It tasted faintly of mulled wine, but she didn’t really care. Distantly, she became aware of another person in the room with her and Aleyel. The warm caress of a healing spell drifted over her and she relaxed slightly as the spell washed away the aches and pains of the past week.
Aleyel gazed at the light elf critically while speaking sharply, almost crossly, at the healer. “What is the extent of her injuries?” If Micardrin had raped her as he’d insinuated, she’d kill him herself. And then she’d have the bastard resurrected so that Shin could kill him.
“She’s not as injured as you believe.” Valekinsia intoned softly, so as not to disturb her patient. “No doubt Micardrin didn’t want to risk diminishing her ‘value’ by ruining her in such a fashion.”
Aleyel blanched a bit. She knew nothing of light elven customs. Was it possible that Starr was untouched? Was that why Micardrin hadn’t broken her? If she was untouched, this would no doubt cause a direct setback in her and Nathavin’s plans to ‘nudge’ Shin to keep her as his own.
Almost as if she knew the directions of Aleyel’s thoughts, Valekinsia spoke. “Do not fret, this elf has known the touch of a male.” Valekinsia paused before speaking again. “If she is to remain in the hands of a dark elf, she should remain with Shin.” She paused her healing ministrations and caught Aleyel’s gaze. “You, Nathavin, and Shin, are not the only ones who disagree with what we’ve done to our light cousins. She must stay with Shin. Promise me this.”
At Aleyel’s affirmative nod, she wrapped up her healing and then dug in her satchel of herbs and passed several bundles of dried stems with the leaves still attached. “The ones with the white flowers, steep those in water and have her drink them several times a day. Those will help with pain and will also draw her out of her own memories of what she endured with Micardrin. The purple flowers, remove the stems and brew them into a strong, concentrated draught. Give her those at night. Only when Shin is here, and preferably without drawing his suspicions.”
At Aleyel’s questioning gaze she grinned softly. “A very mild aphrodisiac, no stronger than a glass of fine wine. Like wine though, it will loosen her inhibitions. As for how much, well that depends on her and her view of Shin. Let’s hope her view is favorable, huh?” She finished with a wink.
Aleyel smiled and accepted both bundles of herbs. As Valekinsia left, she noticed that Starr had fallen asleep. She took the mug of warm cider and placed it on a nearby table and then wrote the instructions for the white flowers on spare parchment, including that it was to be used to alleviate pain. As for the aphrodisiac, she simply instructed that was to be used to reduce stress and only to be taken at night. Whether Starr used them or not was up to her. She wouldn’t brew the tea for Starr and dose her like that, but she had no reservations about Starr fixing it for herself.
The next day, Starr awoke to find breakfast already laid out for her and the parchments with the instructions on how to brew the herbs. The white flower blooms she didn’t recognize and took several long moments studying. The purple flowers, she knew quite well. Lavandula angustifolia, or simply lavender, as the humans called it, was quite well known to her. In fact, she used it to help her fall asleep during times of restlessness.
Scooping up the bundle carefully, she held it to her nose and breathed deeply. Immediately she felt a sense of calm overtake her. As she read the instructions, she realized that she never knew the plant could be brewed into a tea. Usually she placed the flowers in a warm bath and soaked. Shrugging, she ate her breakfast and prepared the white flowers as instructed.
When Aleyel braved entering the chambers later that morning, she was pleasantly surprised to find Starr lounging on the overstuffed sofa and reading a scroll that had been left by Shin. The two eyed one another cautiously for a moment before Starr dropped her gaze and mumbled both a thank you and an apology. Aleyel accepted graciously, a little unnerved at how… demure… Starr seemed. While she wanted the light elf to be more docile, demure would never spark Shin’s interest, and it most certainly wouldn’t keep it. Holding back a sigh, she let the matter drop for now. Maybe the light elf would regain some of her spiciness with Shin’s eventual return.
They developed a routine over the next few days. Aleyel would visit during the day, and would leave at night. She was a bit stunned to hear that the purple flowers were known to Starr and considered by the light elves as a cure for restlessness. However a few well placed questions to Valekinsia later cleared the matter up. It seemed that light elves weren’t as affected by the flowers and could even keep them inside their homes in vases to keep them fresh and not dried. A practice that would cause chaos in a dark elven home.
Dark elves were so sensitive to the flower that they only had to breathe in the scent and be affected, which was one of the reasons why the plant wasn’t found in dark elven territory and was always kept in a dried form. But light elves were only extremely mildly affected by the plant’s scent. She made sure to have Valekinsia drop in to stress to Starr that the flowers needed to be brewed and consumed, the only way to elicit the aphrodisiac qualities of the plant for light elves according to Valekinsia, rather than simply strewn in bath water and allowed to perfume the air for maximum effect.

Shin navigated the many twists and turns in the dark caverns. Exhausted, he barely noticed where he was going. Reaching the doorway, he listened closely for any sounds coming from within. He didn’t think she’d be awake, it was quite late at night and she was normally asleep by now. Hearing nothing, he quietly opened the door and entered.
The chambers were pitch dark, no candles were lit anywhere. Knowing she couldn’t see without at least one lit candle, he moved forward calmly, confident that she wasn’t waiting to attack him. Without a sound or the aid of a light source, he put everything away. Entering the bedchambers, he was immensely glad that he’d taken a cleansing dip in the river before entering the caves.
Gazing over the bed, he spotted her form under the covers. He didn’t care.
With unconscious stealth, he removed his armor and gently slid into bed next to her. Her modesty be damned. He’d gone days sleeping in the elements with nothing but a threadbare blanket between himself and the ground. He wanted to sleep in a soft bed his first night back. As he laid back and stretched his sore muscles, he breathed in deeply and fell asleep.
Several hours later, Starr flipped the covers off of herself and turned over, facing away from Shin, still unaware of his presence. As the minutes ticked by, Shin gradually awoke. He lay there silently, trying to figure out what had woken him. His eyes roved the bed and the room in general. She’d turned in her sleep, now on her side rather than her back, and she’d flipped the covers off, presumably because she was too warm. Nothing in the room was disturbed…
He breathed in heavily, a sigh forming, when it hit him.
The smell of rabenda. He quickly determined that it was emanating from the light elf next to him. As his body reacted, he swore savagely. Who had brought her this?
