Chapter Fourteen: The Beach
After the meeting at Sora’s school the house was nearly empty, which was a relief to the young couple. After Sephiroth excused himself to his study to do some work, the pair migrated into the kitchen.
“I’m starving!” Sora said, taking a seat on the bar stool in front of the kitchen island counter, “That toast for breakfast just didn’t cut it!”
His silver haired lover chuckled, entering the kitchen behind him, “Want me to make you something to eat?” He asked, before leaning down at pressing a kiss to the brunet’s forehead.
“Would you?” Sora asked, giving his lover a bright smile, “You know, I love a man that cooks!” He added on playfully.
Riku snickered, “It’d be my pleasure. Just name it.” He said, leaning against the counter next to his brunet, “I wonder when you’ll start having cravings...my father said my mother ate nothing but Japanese food when she was pregnant with me.”
“That’d explain your love for Japanese cuisine.” Sora replied, “But, I’ll settle for a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”
Riku snorted. That wasn’t a craving that was something Sora ate on a regular basis, “Sure, babe.” He said, leaning down to press another kiss to the boy’s forehead, “How about after you’re finished with this you and I go down to the beach?”
Sora nodded in agreement as he watched his lover move about the kitchen, making his sandwich, "Sounds like a plan." He replied, "Extra bananas too..." He pointed out just as his lover started to slice up a banana.
"Do you really think Kairi's okay with us?" Riku asked after a moment or two of silence, "I mean, I know she says she is...but, call me crazy...I've been getting the feeling lately that she really isn't all that comfortable in my presence."
"Well, she did used to have a crush on me." Sora pointed out softly, "Maybe she never fully got over it." He sighed softly, giving the silver haired teenager a smile as he pushed the finished sandwich over to him, "It's nothing to worry about though, she'll get over it and get used to us."
"Yeah...you're probably right." Riku said, putting the stuff he used to make Sora's sandwich away before deciding he could use a ham and cheese sandwich, "I'm just being moody again."
"Things will get better." Sora replied confidently, with a nod of his head before he took a bite out of his sandwich. Things could only get better from here.
Riku wished he could believe that. He really did, but he had always been more realistic about things than Sora tended to be. He would, however, humor his lover as always and smile and agree with him. "Eat your sandwich. I want to get to that beach before Yazoo has a chance to sink his claws into for your home schooling."
Sora nodded, returning to devouring his sandwich, swinging his legs happily. He knew things would get better, it may not be better in the sense that everyone will accept them as who they are, but every storm has it's silver lining.
Turning away to make his sandwich, Riku dropped the smile and bit down on his lower lip as he thought things over. Not only would he have to work hard in school so that he could go to a good college, he would have to train harder in order to protect his loved ones. His brothers and parents could take care of themselves, but he would never forgive himself if something happened to Sora or their child.
Sora sighed softly, setting his sandwich down, “Look, Riku, if you're that worried...” He paused for a moment. He knew it took a lot to worry his lover, and when he did get that worried, there was always a reason for it, “Maybe we should look for another place to live.”
"I've already considered that, Sora," Riku said, facing his lover. "But it's just not doable right now. We're both still only in high school and we have no income. Besides, where could we go? I know you're not a big fan of having to leave Destiny Island. Everytime I've mentioned it in the past... you would cry and call me a meanie for wanting to take you away from your family, from your home."
Sora snorted softly, "Well, we don't have to worry about my 'home' anymore." He replied, "I just don't know what I'd do if anything happened to our baby or you...there's no guarantee that things will be safer once the baby's born."
"I know, baby." Riku replied, giving up on his sandwich to take a seat beside Sora. One hand rubbing the younger boy's back, "I'd say we could stay with my Dad's family, but then again, I really don't know them. He'd never talked about them...and considering what I just found out about myself...it's no wonder."
"We can't relay on my family. They're carbon copies of my parents...except for my Aunt. But, she has her own problems to deal with." Sora said softly.
"I'll talk to my Dad about it, see what he thinks is best." Riku replied. He loved that Sora wanted to help out, that was one of his more endearing qualities, but since he wasn't the one that had gotten them into this mess...well, Riku felt that it was his responsibly to figure things out for them.
Silence passed between the two. It was neither serene nor threatening. But, thoughtful in between the two.
"You know...I think my morning sickness is easing up a bit." Sora said, breaking the silence.
"Really?" Riku asked, grateful for the break in the silence. "My mom said there's no telling how long it could last. With Loz it was only three months. With Yazoo, she hardly got sick at all. And with Kadaj, she was sick the whole time and with me it only lasted a few weeks."
The brunet snorted, “At least we know why Kadaj is such a handful...” He murmured, “But, I haven’t been feeling sick to my stomach. So, I could be over it.” He finished off his sandwich, “So how about that walk on the beach?”
“As long as you don’t mind going to that lesser known spot that we use for...well you know.” Riku replied with a smirk. Oh the things that have happened on that hidden cove...his brothers didn’t even know about it, “I don’t exactly feel like running into anyone.”
“That’s fine.” Sora agreed, reaching for his lover’s hand as he slid off of the bar stool, “I’d rather spend what little free time I have left with you.”
"I love you," Riku whispered, leaning over to kiss the top of Sora's head. No matter how moody he felt, a simple touch from the brunet was always enough to calm him. With a smile, he lead his lover out to his car to drive them to a more remote spot on the beach that Riku and Sora had discovered ages ago before they were even official. Ever since then it had been their secret spot, which more than came in handy after they started dating and wanted some...alone time.
--- --- ---
Sora walked around for a moment, perhaps to find the ideal spot to start a sand castle, “We should come here more often...” He said, plopping down on a spot he had demeaned acceptable, “I don't have to worry about people stomping on my sand castles.”
Kicking off his shoes nearby, Riku chuckled. Whenever they went to the beach with Tidus or Wakka or any of their other friends, Sora always wound up pouting about all his good hard work having been destroyed by the others' horseplay. "I should have brought my camera to take a picture so you could always lovingly look at the castle you built that didn't get wrecked."
Sora snickered softly at that before shrugging, “It’d be nice to have some memories...since it’ll be awhile until we get to come back.” He replied, “But, there’ll be other days at the beach.” He said as he smoothed out a shapeless lump of sand that would become a tower or a mound.
"Yeah, there will be," Riku said, settling down into the warm sand on his back to look up at the sky. "I know it would probably be safer to leave in the long run but... everytime I think about it I start to feel guilty that our child would never know the joys of frolicking on the beach like we did when we were small. Stupid huh? Getting sentimental over something like that..."
“I know what you mean. But, it's not like we couldn't bring the baby back, after all, I'm sure your dad would kill us if he never got to see his grandchild. And, I'm sure your brothers would maim us as well.” Sora said, looking over at his lover, “No matter how far away inland we go, we’ll always be islanders and it runs in our baby’s blood too.”
Placing his arms under his head, Riku glanced over at Sora. "I'm sure they would, but do you really think it would be safe for the baby? Actually, do you really think it's safe for you now? I don't think people fully grasp our situation yet, but when you start to show..." Riku shuddered as some of the worst case scenarios that had been plaguing him sprang to mind. "... maybe we should leave..."
Sora pulled his knees to his chest, resting his chin on them, “I don't even want to think about what would happen...” He murmured gently. The law wouldn't be much help, they'd be against Sora and Riku.
"Since we can't really leave right now, promise me that you will never go anywhere without me or one of my brothers to protect you, okay?" Riku asked, rolling onto his side to look at his lover.
Sora smiled softly, “Promise.” He replied with a nod to his lover before returning to his sand castle.
"Thank you." With a smile of his own, Riku went back to watching the clouds float by lazily in the sky. "I hope that this baby will be like you." Happy, optimistic, always looking on the bright side of things.
“I hope the baby's like you too, you know.” Sora said, glancing over his shoulder.
"Only in looks," Riku chuckled, knowing full well how vain he could be. He wouldn't wish his more temperamental side on anyone, especially his own child.
Sora laughed lightly too, “No, I hope they can grow up to love someone like you love me.”
"Oh, they will," Riku nodded. "Because this baby will be loved... is loved, just as much. Probably to the point where they'll be embarrassed by us."
Sora laughed at that, “You're right about that.” He said, abandoning his sand castle to snuggle with his lover on the beach.
Chuckling, Riku buried his fingers in Sora's hair, lazily running them through the surprisingly silky strands. He wanted to stay just like that forever, but unfortunately he knew they couldn't so he had decided long ago to make every moment alone with his lover count. "When is your next doctor's appointment?"
Sora frowned for a moment before arching slightly to dig in his back pocket, he pulled out his phone, “Now, that you mention it, I'm not entirely sure...” He muttered, pulling up the calendar on his phone where he kept various dates and appointments, “Hm, it's the day after tomorrow.”
"When? Because if it's during the day, I'm going to have to leave school early," Riku said thoughtfully. Which wouldn't be a problem since he his grades were excellent, but with their future depending on him he didn't want to mess his education up now.
Sora looked over at him, “Don't worry, it's after you get out of school.” He said, handing his phone over to Riku so he could see as well.
Taking the phone, Riku checked to make sure that Sora had set an alert on the day in question or the brunet would most likely forget about the appointment. "After your doctor's visit we can go and get passports too," Riku told Sora, handing his lover's phone back to him. "And I'll talk to dad about maybe staying with his family for a while. Maybe until after the baby is born. I definitely want to have more than one option available to us."
Sora nodded, laying his head on Riku's chest, “Sounds like a plan.”
Once again Riku ran his finger's through Sora's hair, then tilted his head back to look up at the clouds. "I wonder what they're like.. my dad's family. I certainly hope that none of them are like Kadaj. One of him is already too much to deal with at times."
Sora chuckled softly at that, “I would have to agree with you there.” He replied, still grinning lightly.
"Did you notice his black eye? He got it because he asked me to take nude pictures of you when you're about eight months along." How he said that with a straight face, Riku will never know. Not when Kadaj had been lucky to only receive a black eye, Riku had been so angry with him.
Sora blinked, sitting up a little, “Riku, baby, your brother is weird!” He said, shaking his head.
"Well... if you really think about it... we all have to be. I mean... wings? Come on, Sora, that's just not normal." Nor was it something Riku felt he would ever get used to. "And besides, my dad says there's nothing more sexy than your partner being pregnant. Not that I want to ever picture my parents having sex," Riku shuddered, "but apparently being pregnant makes one horny too. Why do you think there's four of us?"
Sora snorted with laughter at that one, “But, Kadaj takes the cake.” He pointed out as he sat up, “Who else would ask their brother for a threesome with his pregnant boyfriend?”
Not wanting to let Sora go just yet, Riku wrapped his arms about his lover and pulled him onto his lap. He then rested his chin on the younger boy's shoulder. "If we didn't look so much alike, I would claim that my parents found him on the beach hatched from an egg, took pity on him and brought him home to our eternal torment."
Sora laughed lightly at that, “That would explain a lot.” He said, “But, you're right, you and your brothers look way too much a like. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were quads.”
Resting his chin on the top of Sora's head, Riku looked out over the ocean waves. "And we all look so much like our dad. We barely look like anyone on our mom's side at all. I wonder... if all his family looks so much alike."
“I suppose we’ll have to find out when we meet them.” Sora replied with a soft sigh, leaning back against his lover.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Riku agreed, heaving a deep sigh as well.
Sora glanced behind him, frowning lightly at his lover, “Everything will be okay, you'll see.” He said, before he pressed a kiss to his lover's lips. It hurt Sora to see his silver haired lover so worried, it made him worry and he didn't like to worry.
Smiling wryly, Riku hugged Sora to him. "Sorry," he whispered, apologizing for sliding into moodier side. Sora knew he was prone to it and accepted it as part of who he was, but that didn't mean he liked it. He wasn't really able to control it all the time. "Wanna head back? Or did you want to go somewhere else before we have to go home for dinner?"
“Did you have a place in mind?” Sora asked, tilting his head, “I don't mind, really, but if it means another moment with you, then we can stay out a little longer.”
"I was just thinking that since this all happened," Riku said, rubbing his hand over Sora's abdomen, "...that I haven't taken you out anywhere and I thought it would be nice to spoil you a little. How about we get some of your favorite ice cream? Once we leave, I'll doubt we'll have a chance to get it for a very long time since it's only made at the shoppe in town."
Sora grinned widely, “That’d be awesome!” He agreed almost instantly. Nothing hit the spot quite like sea-salt ice cream did.
