Chapter
14: Mission Accomplished
“When will I see you again?” Alyssa
asked cautiously as she gathered up the last of her things. She had slipped on
the robe Malcus had given her and was ready to depart. The plain grey robe was
a little large and wasn’t really her style but… it was certainly better than
nothing. She tied a rope around her waist.
“Don’t worry about that. I will
find you in a day or so, after you’ve settled down from your journey. I know
you enjoy exploring, but at this point I suggest you simply use an Almsivi Intervenion
spell to get you back to the temple at Ald’ruhn,” Malcus replied, a touch of
warmth returning to his voice. His breath, however, was more shallow and rapid
than normal. He took a deep breath to regain composure. Once she left the
cave, would she betray him? He saw little alternative but to wait and see. He
smiled, trying to mask the pounding of his heart in his chest. His life was
now riding on her silence, after all. Alyssa smiled back.
“Thank you!” she replied sweetly.
Then, in a flash of white light, she was gone.

Alyssa stopped by Bevene Releth’s
clothier shop in Ald’Skar when she returned. Although she had grown used to
seeing the giant excavated crab husk that formed the center of the town of Ald’ruhn,
its eerie bone-lined interior still creeped her out. She felt a growing morbid
fascination as she hurried to climb over the high bony ridges on the lower
shell to get to Bevene’s shop.
“Hello Alyssa, what can I do for
you today?” asked Releth when she entered the shop. Alyssa laughed.
“I’m not looking for anything too
fancy today, but I simply can’t return home in this horrid robe,” she replied
with a smile as she looked over Bevene’s wares.
“I was wondering. It doesn’t suit
you at all. It doesn’t even fit. Wherever did you pick that up?” she asked.
“Oh, I was out adventuring and my
own robe got so torn up that I had no choice but to grab the nearest
replacement, and this was it, unfortunately,” she sighed suddenly spying an
item that caught her eye, “Oh! What a gorgeous blue skirt! It looks like the
night sky.”
“I thought you might like that. I
imported it from Caldera. I have a blouse that matches. It’s a little more concervative
than I know you like to wear, but for adventuring and the like it might be
better to own something with a little more fabric to it. I can’t blame you
though for wanting to show off that perfect little figure of yours. If I was
built like you I don’t think I’d ever wear more than a negligee,” Bevene smiled
politely.
“Actually, I think they’re
beautiful. Do you mind if I try them on?” Alyssa asked.
“Certainly. Go right ahead, you
know where the changing rooms are,” Bevene replied. Alyssa hurried off. She
quickly emerged with a smile on her face as she spun around. Bevene shook her
head with a smile.
“You have the gift of making
everything you put on look amazing. I wish more of my customers had that going
for them – I’d make a fortune,” she smiled. Alyssa thanked her and paid for
the outfit. She folded up the grey traveling robe and put it in her sack as
she headed back out to the guild. She could return it to Malcus when she saw
him next. She wondered when and where he was going to appear. The idea made
her nervous, but at the same time, it was exciting having a secret. He had
saved her life after all. But at the same time he had taken advantage of her…
in such a brutal way… she really wasn’t sure what to make of him. Ah well, she
could sort all that out later.
“You’re back!” said Orrent, “It’s
great to see your smiling face again! How was your trip? You’ll have to tell
us all about it!” Alyssa laughed.
“I will, but first I should
probably check in with Edwinna. Where is she?” asked Alyssa. Orrent rolled
his eyes, crossing his arms with a smirk.
“Oh, she’s in her quarters,” he
replied, “Unfortunate because we had a woman in here earlier looking for some
alchemical ingredients and no way of reaching Anarenen. We had to tell her to
come back later.”
“Ah,” said Alyssa knowingly, “Why
didn’t you just knock on the door and tell them?” He laughed.
“And I suppose that’s what you’re
going to do now?” he asked with a smile.
“Well, that’s what she TOLD us to
do,” Alyssa replied. She marched over to Edwinna’s door and knocked loudly.
Orrent laughed. A moment passed and the door opened. Edwinna’s eyes grew
large as she saw her little sister standing before her and she smiled. Alyssa
nearly knocked her over as she rushed to hug her.
“I’m so glad you’re back. Whatever
happened? Did you find out about the missing report?” she asked. Alyssa
nodded, searching through her sack until she found it and handing it to her
sister. Taking it, Edwinna hurriedly opened it and began reading it as she
paced. She let out a gasp, then a triumphant laugh.
“Oh this is amazing! Did you read
it Alyssa?” she asked.
“No, actually,” she replied.
Suddenly she felt a little foolish. It hadn’t even occurred to her to read the
report.
“Well, besides reporting some
highly intriguing discoveries regarding the mechanical properties of spider
centurions – which I will of course have to research further to confirm, it
seems that Senelias believes there is an entire lower level to the ruins which
could lead to even more discoveries!” she laughed out loud.
“Actually, Hulgar and I discovered
the lower levels ourselves while we were there, quite by accident actually.
But the Dunmer archaeologist Anes had discovered them first, unfortunately… he
didn’t live to tell the tale. There was a steam centurion down there waiting
for us over his body,” Alyssa replied.
“Oh how wonderful! I mean, how
horrid for Anes, but how wonderful that you found the key to the lower levels!
You know to use frost spells to combat steam centurions, don’t you dear? It
freezes up the very steam they run off of – works every time,” she said, still
pouring over the letter, “I suppose Anes’ untimely death was the cause of the
delay in reporting in?”
“It was indeed. He had the report
on him when he disappeared into the lower levels. Senelias couldn’t find him
or the report,” replied Alyssa. She was proud that her first mission had been
such a success.
“Excellent. Did you find anything
else of note while you were there by any chance? Oh, I do wish I could have
been there! Sometime I get so bogged down running and managing these
expeditions that I forget what it’s like to actually be down in the ruins
myself. I do miss it so,” she lamented.
“I found this book, but I certainly
can’t read it,” Alyssa said as she searched through her sack again, handing a
large old book to Edwinna.
“Hmm. Unfortunately, I can’t read
it either. I wish I could. The Dwemeri language has been lost for so many
years that I doubt anyone can read it anymore. Although I’ve heard a few
rumors among the academic circle… perhaps I’ll have to investigate further. I
have two other books I’ve collected from previous expeditions that I would also
love to have translated,” she wandered off, still staring at the book.
Suddenly she stopped and turned around.
“Wait, where’s Hulgar?” she asked.
Alyssa laughed out loud. She was wondering when her sister was going to
notice.
“He sprung a Dwemer jink trap, but Senelias
is taking care of it,” she smiled.
“Ah. Yes, those are quite common
in ruins. Hmm, so you made it all the way back here yourself with no trouble?
I’m impressed. Good work Alyssa,” she smiled. Alyssa blushed. Unfortunately,
she couldn’t take all the credit for that one. But she didn’t feel she should
say anything just now. Edwinna had her information and Alyssa was safe, so for
now all was well in the Ald’ruhn Mages Guild.
