A thunderclap resounded in a white void, the air rippling as a planet came into focus. Blue and green with white flakes scattered across it, it gradually grew from the speck it had appeared as. Enlarging to a size unable to be taken in all at once, a small sphere of light flew upwards from its surface. As it left, the planet’s growth came to a halt, the light giving off blinding rays of blue light, reflecting off the planet and swallowed by the void around it. The sphere came to a stop some distance above the planet, condensing into nothingness before exploding, revealing four individuals standing inside.
Quill grunted as he hit the an invisible platform, falling to his knees. “Agh, my head… what was that?”Tyler staggered slightly, looking a little winded. “The magical feedback was a little harsh…” he glanced toward the girl that had rushed into his spell moments before it was cast. “Because I transported a little more than intended. What did you think you were doing?”The girl flinched, far worse off than both Tyler and Quill. She struggled for breath as she fell flat on her back. She held up a finger asking for a moment, which Tyler begrudgingly had to comply with.Altius glanced around, either not affected by the mischarge of magic or hiding it very well. “We made it back into the gap…” he looked down, past his feet. Earth was hovering below them, as peaceful as a planet can be. But there was nothing else in the void, not even the bodies from before. He frowned as he turned left, noticing his shoulder was uncomfortably light. It had been a while since he had seen Pic…Tyler sighed, turning away from the girl who was obviously not recovering any time soon. He joined Altius, looking around at their surroundings. Or, rather, lack of them. “I see Earth… but… where’s Azeroth?”Altius shrugged, helping Quill to his feet. “You’re the one proficient at magic here. Don’t you have some sort of idea how this dimension works?”Tyler frowned, placing his thumb and forefinger on his chin thoughtfully. “Well, Shek’ron was never privy to sharing his magic with me, despite using mine for his own needs…” He closed his eyes and shook his head. “I have no idea.”Quill looked at him, startled. “Wait, what? Do you mean we can’t get back to Azeroth?!”Altius shook his head, placing a hand on Quill’s shoulder. He was startled for a moment that he was shorter than him, just now realizing that the boy they had brought with them had become his father. And he was naked. No, wait, now he was the boy again. With clothes. “What’s happening to you?”Quill looked down at himself, eyes widening as he changed again. “I’m back! Or…” he shifted again, the forms blurring into each other as he did so. “…what?”Altius took a step back. He had, until that point, refused to believe that the boy was his father. But now he was taking on his form and back to the boy again. He grimaced as he shifted again, the mix of the two bodies occurring again. That, and the fact that while in the form of his father he was naked, made it more than a little unnerving.Tyler glanced over at him, temporarily forgetting about the dimension dilemma. “Hm? It looks like your body can’t keep one form… but…” He scratched his head. “If you’re changing into the form you take in Azeroth, then… there must be a way to get there from here… we just need to figure out how. Before anything happens.”Altius looked at him curiously. “What could happen?”Tyler waved a hand absent-mindedly at Quill. “Oh, he could get stuck in between forms, or we’d lose the connection to Azeroth.”Altius’ and Quill’s eyes widened. “Wait, what?!”Tyler shrugged. “I’m just guessing. I’ve seen it happen before, granted, but only once, and only when the person was in here for a bit too long. Probably around… oh, 20 minutes or so.”“20 minutes?!” Quill yelled, switching back to his Azerothian body. “We need to find a way out of here!”Altius nodded, looking around once more. “But… how?”“Good question.” Tyler said. He gestured toward the girl, who had finally caught her breath and was sitting up. “But we should deal with her first.”“I guess…” Quill said nervously. He never wanted anyone to see him in his Earth body… the fact that Altius had was already bothering him, but he could deal with that later.“Hey, what’s your name?” Altius said, crouching down beside the girl. She looked up at him curiously, not afraid at all of the person who was obviously not human in front of her. How strange. “I… don’t know if it matters.”Altius gave her a bemused look. “Well, I don’t want to just call you girl-”“And I don’t care!” Tyler said cheerfully, cutting him off. “So, girl, I repeat. What did you think you were doing?”The girl stared at him, a faint glimmer of something in her eyes. Recognition? “I wanted to come with you.” She said simply.Tyler waved his hand around. “Well, that you did. But you see, we’re having a bit of an issue, and I think it may be your fault. So, if you don’t mind, I think I’ll send you back now-”“What did you say your name was?” She asked, looked at Quill. Tyler trailed off, a slightly irritated look on his face.“What? I… I didn’t.” Quill said, shifting to his Azerothian body. “Why?”As he shifted, the girl’s eyes lit up. “Quill!!”“How do you know his name?” Altius said, stepping protectively in front of his father.“I…” she started as her body started to change. Her skin darkened to a deep purple color, her legs curved and became double jointed, her toes shrinking into her foot as they grew black hooves. Her hair changed from blonde to silver as purple horns elongated from her head, her eyes turning from green to a simple glow, no iris or pupil. Tendrils grew out of her face around her jawline, hanging limply. Her body became considerably more curvy as she shifted, looking as if she aged a few years in a few seconds. That change was made more obvious by the fact that her clothes disappeared like Quill’s, leaving her standing in the nude. The three men stared at her blankly, the only movement for several moments being Quill’s shift back into his Earth body. As he did so, he thought about covering Altius’ eyes. He mentally slapped himself. Altius wasn’t a kid anymore.“Who are you?” Altius blurted out, the sight of her body only distracting him for a second. Neither Tyler or Quill said anything, their jaws hanging open in disbelief. The girl looked down at herself, jumping up in surprise. A lengthy tail came out from behind her as she did so, swaying in a breeze of its own making. “Wh-what? I’m… I’m…”“…Serenity…?” Quill asked softly.Altius swiveled his head back and forth between the two. With both of them now changing forms every few seconds, it made his head hurt.“Quill! It is you!” Serenity cried as she rushed forward, hugging him. She didn’t seem to mind that they were both naked. Now clothed.“This is getting a little ridiculous…” Tyler said, waving hand in their direction while in their Azerothian bodies. Two identical plain robes appeared on them, making it much less of an awkward hug.“You know her too?” Altius asked Tyler, Serenity babbling about how it had been too long and Quill trying to get a word in. “How does she know my dad? Is this something my mom should know about?”Tyler chuckled. “Oh no, nothing like that. At least, I don’t think so.” He scratched his chin for a moment before shrugging. “She was just another person Shek’ron brought from Earth to Azeroth, and actually managed to bug him enough to send her back. Your father helped her adjust to Azeroth and find me.”“Oh… but…” Altius glanced down at the planet hovering beneath them. “But Earth is so big… what are the chances that they’d be so close together?”Tyler shrugged again. “Slim to none, but that’s still a chance. But what still hasn’t been answered,” he stated loudly, drawing the attention of the two friends. “Is why she jumped into my spell. I’ll ask again, hopefully for the last time. What did you think you were doing?”Serenity pointed at Altius, smiling. “Well, for one, I wanted to thank him for saving me.” She stepped toward him to hug him, and was a little disappointed when he didn’t hug her back. Oh well. “And I realized you all had come from Azeroth after I recognized you, Tyler.”“And?” Tyler asked, obviously getting impatient.“And… I wanted to go back.” She said sheepishly.Tyler slapped his hand against his head. “After all that effort to get back out? Why would you- wait, no, I don’t actually care.” He said, cutting off her sentence before it even started. “We can talk later, we need to get to Azeroth before your forms blend.”Altius nodded, looking once more around the void for something they could head for. “And… how do we do that?”“Well…” Tyler said, reaching into a small rip in the dimension and pulling out a small crystal. He let it go and it hovered where his fingers left it, a soft humming noise emanating from it. “My magic sensor is reacting to Azeroth’s magic, but that might be from your sword or those two.” He said, gesturing towards Quill and Serenity. “Speaking of which… would you mind if I took a look at your sword?”“My sword?” Altius repeated, his hand flying to the hilt instinctively. “Why?”“I might be able to use its magical properties as a focus point to open a portal to Azeroth. It might get destroyed in the process, but…” He shrugged. “Better a sword than all of us.”Altius flinched slightly. He had been attatched to the sword since it was gifted to him by his father, even though he had only recently been able to use it. And now it seemed to hum within his grip reassuringly. Was he sure he would be willing to lose it? “Isn’t there something else you could use?”Tyler shook his head. “Most of the items I possess were Shek’ron’s at some point, and have magical signatures tracing back to the demon world. Quill and Serenity wouldn’t have anything on them, and even if they did I doubt the magic would be as potent as that blade.”Altius’ eyes narrowed. “What do you mean? What’s so special about it?”“Well, for starters…” Tyler said, plucking his crystal out of the air and bringing it closer to the sword. It began to hum louder and louder the closer it got, shining with an increasing intensity. “This crystal is a magic sensor, but it’s demonic in nature. It normally pulses a dark color, but now it’s completely white. Only the purest form of magic can do that. You think you beat Shek’ron on your own?”Altius started, suddenly wondering about his abilities.Tyler patted him on the shoulder. “Sure, you had supernatural strength from being in a dimension where most magical power is untapped, but the main reason you were even able to hurt Shek’ron is thanks to the magic in this sword.” He sighed. “Look, I know you might want to hold onto it for sentimental reasons, but I wasn’t kidding before. It’s the sword, or us. Those two might have their forms blended if we stay too long, but longer than that and we’ll go into stasis.” Quill and Serenity twitched uncomfortably.Altius tightened his grip, feeling a surge of energy rushing through him through the sword. It was warm, hopeful. He sighed, loosening his grip. He pulled the sword off of his back and handed it to Tyler. “Alright. Make sure it works.”Tyler nodded, taking the sword gingerly. He never liked weapons. It pushed the crystal into his palm, feeling a slight prick and warmth as it poked him. “Will do. I just need to focus for a second and-”Abruptly the crystal exploded, small fragments of glass scattering themselves across the void. Tyler and Altius flinched, and Quill leaping forward in a panic. As sudden as the pieces had flung apart, they began moving on their own swirling around the four and forcing them closer together as so not to get cut. Altius tried to reach for his sword, only to find it had vanished. “What happened?” He shouted, the crystals starting to howl with increased speed.“I don’t know!” Tyler shouted back, attempting to conjure a magical barrier but being unable to summon his magic. The crystal shards seemed to absorb any energy he conjured. Quill stood protectively in front of his son, made slightly awkward at points due to his height constantly changing. Serenity cowered behind Tyler, a worried expression in her eyes. One of the shards flying around slowed to a stop in front of them, magnifying itself to several times its original size. There was a brief image of a smiling face before it flew back into the cyclone, the pieces picking up speed. “Who was that?” Altius was too stunned to speak. Hadn’t he seen her die?All at once the shards flew away from them, forming a circle several yards ahead of them. The void beyond it shimmered as the portal began to coalesce, showing a faint image of Stormwind. The four relaxed slightly, expecting something far more sinister. Tyler cocked his head. “Well now. I didn’t see that coming.”“Niether did I, but it looks like I’ll be going back after all!” Serenity said, happily clapping her hands together.“I can go home…” Quill said happily, tears rolling down his face.“…thank you…” Altius said quietly, unnoticed by those around him.“Tyler took a step towards the portal. “Well, no time to lose. You two first.” He said, pointing at Quill and Serenity.“Why?” Quill asked, looking nervously at Altius.“So I can make sure you do it right. Go on!” Tyler said, pushing the other two with some magic. They stumbled toward the portal, looking at each other uncertainly. “Alright, you need to go in when you’re in your Azerothian bodies. Otherwise all kinds of shit will happen. Got it?” He asked, hardly waiting for a reply. “Quill, you first.”Quill took a deep breath, stepping just in front of the portal. He looked at his body for a moment, the transitions between forms having slowed to every ten or so seconds. As he changed back into his Azerothian body, he dashed forward, disappearing into the ripples.“Good! Serenity, go.” Tyler said, ushering her forward. She handled it much the same way Quill did, dashing in once she had changed. Once she vanished, Tyler let his arm fall. “That was your friend, wasn’t it?”“What?” Altius asked, caught up in his thoughts to have noticed the past minute or so.“The face. That was your friend, wasn’t it?” Tyler said again, a uncharacteristically somber look on his face.Altius looked down, noticing that Earth had grown much smaller since his father and Serenity had left. “Yeah. She was.”Tyler sighed. “I’m sorry.” He said briefly, gesturing toward the portal. “Off you go.”Altius glanced at the mage. “Aren’t you coming?”Tyler shook his head. “I’m not welcome. Not a very friendly person when being possessed by a demon, you see.” He chuckled halfheartedly.“What are you going to do then?” Altius asked, frowning.“Perhaps go to the Caverns of Time. Try to stop this whole thing from happening. And save my family. But if I could,” he said, sighing. “I suppose we wouldn’t be here. I don’t know. Just stay in this dimension I suppose.”Altius folded his arms. “You’re coming. You can stay with my family.”Tyler laughed, though there was no humor in it. “After what grief I’ve caused them? Doubtful.”“It was never you.” Altius told him, putting a hand on the wizard’s shoulder. “Now that you’re free, they’ll take you in.”Tyler stayed silent for a long time. He looked at the portal, and down at the fast receding Earth. He groaned. “I’m not used to having feelings anymore. I’ll think about it.” He said as he shoved Altius toward the portal, sending him headfirst into the tear…Goldshire was as crowded as ever, if not more so due to it being a weekend. Drunken villagers and visitors stumbled around outside the inn, carelessly flirting with each other, a horse, an exasperated guard, or a fence post. Nearly none of them took notice of the resounding crash in the inn, save the guard. She jumped, a little too eager to get away from her current ‘suitor’. She dashed inside, hoping some Horde member had been unlucky enough to teleport into the inn. She gave the two humans grinding in the entryway a wide birth as she rushed into the main room, brushing past patrons and other people she didn’t want to think about. She sagged her shoulders in disappointment at what she saw. A human had somehow managed to crash into the center table hard enough to break it, four large creases splintering in all directions. He was sprawled on his back with a plain white robe on, a strange attire for a place as bizarre as Goldshire. She sheathed her sword and shield, silently praying that her shift change would come sooner rather than later, pushing aside some drunk people who were ogling the spectacle to help the man. “Are you ok sir?” She asked as she neared him.As if he sensed a voice of reason amongst the madness, the man groaned, starting to move, pushing himself off of the wreckage of the table. “Huh… that was unpleasant…” He winced as the guard grabbed his arm, roughly pulling him up. “Where am I?”The guard rolled her eyes, bemused at the man’s perplexed appearance. “Goldshire. Did you mean to come here?”“Goldshire?” The man said slowly, as if hearing something he hadn’t heard in a long time. His face broke into a smile, and, slowly but surely, he started laughing madly. Several patrons around raised their mugs and laughed with him. “I’M BACK!!!”The guard shook her head, walking back to her post. Sometimes there was just no point in trying to understand.Altius hit face first onto a not so soft surface. The rest of his body crumpled behind him as he fell out of the portal. He groaned, rubbing his head. He looked around, finding himself not in the mages tower or Stormwind itself, but a small road he recognized to be a little further out from the city than Goldshire. Even now, the noises from the party village were coming into focus, the rest of the world gradually following suit. He took in a deep breath, never in his life so grateful for the fresh scent of the forest.
And then he realized he was alone. He looked left and right, seeing no one around, save for the occasional animal darting between the trees. Quill and Serenity wouldn’t just leave, would they? Or, the more likely option, he had come out at a different spot than them. Oh well. He stood up, stretching. He felt lighter than normal due to his sword being gone. He frowned, the thought reminding him of Elara. What she sacrificed for him. He decided to make a proper memorial for her once he got home. Speaking of which…Possibly the luckiest of the three (depending on how you look at it), Serenity had actually been teleported directly into Stormwind and managed to land on her feet. The cobblestone beneath her hadn’t provided a very nice landing, but a graceful one, regardless. She did a once over to make sure nothing had gone wrong, and sighed in relief. Looking around, she found herself to be standing near the ruins of the park, the smoldering remains still warm to this day. She smiled as she looked to the sky, seeing several mounted guards on their regular patrol routes. She concentrated for a moment, a small orb of fire bursting to life in her palms. It was all she could do not to jump up and down for joy.
She did it anyways.Altius grinned as he walked toward Goldshire, for once happy to see the se crazed village. He began passing right through, ignoring the hoots and hollers of various men, women, and animals. He was about to push past a crowd gathering around a brawl that had formed when he noticed someone coming out of the inn. “Dad?” He called, rushing toward the figure.
“Altius!” Quill yelled, stumbling slightly over a passed out dwarf on the ground as he ran for his son. They met each other in a hug, the first time in far too long. “You saved me.” Quill said softly.“I’m sorry I doubted you.” Altius apologized, feeling guilty of his earlier mistrust.“No, I’m sorry. I need to tell you and your mother… what really happened when I came here.” Quill said slowly.“What really happe-”“Quill?! Altius?!” A voice called.Father and son turned away from their reunion, surprised to see none other than Billz. He was walking toward them with a stunned expression on his face (from what they could see of it anyways). “You’re alive?”“Looks that way, doesn’t it?” Quill said cheerfully, pulling Altius into an one armed hug.Billz stopped several feet from them, unwilling to come any closer less they fade away. “This is… unreal.”Altius suddenly looked concerned. “Wait, why? What’s wrong?”Billz tilted his head to the side. “You’ve been gone for weeks.”“WEEKS?!” Altius cried, startling several people around them. Only for a moment, though, before they went back to their routine. “It was only a day at most!”Billz shook his head. “I had given up on you. No word, no anything since you set out. I haven’t been up to talking to Kyli about it, but… she’s worried, to say the least.”“What are we waiting for then?” Quill cried, reaching forward and grabbing Billz, pulling him along the road to Stormwind. “We need to go see her! And besides, we found someone else we need to find too.”Billz raised an eyebrow, jerking free of the priest’s grip and walking beside him. “Someone else? Who else was there?”Altius smiled, knowing somewhat of his and Serenity’s relationship. “Not originally, no. She sort of… popped in on her own.”“She..?” Bilz asked, still looking confused but feeling strangely hopeful. Could they mean…?“No time to waste!” Quill cried, feeling understandably giddy. “We need to find her and go home! And you can tell us about what we missed” Billz nodded as the three set out for Stormwind, starting to tell the two about the new island discovered in the southern seas…Puzzled as to why she was alone, Serenity decided to head toward the inn where she had stayed during her first visit to the game. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it was near impossible to get around without finding something new to draw her attention. The world of Azeroth had a magnificence she’d missed even back when she first left and wanted to stay out. The many different races wandering about, the exotic armors and weapons, the very air itself had a feeling of magic in it. And not actual magic, used for spells and such. Magic of wonder, a sense of adventure, everything Earth didn’t seem to have. It was a wonderland to a girl like herself. She shuffled around a menacing looking death knight who glared at her suspiciously as she neared the Trade center, deciding to go through it despite the traffic it would have.
A voice called out from in front of her, mentioning something about fresh bread. It was soon drowned out by a multitude of voices, all as strange and as interesting as the people themselves were. Flying mounts soared overhead, and many adventurers using various creatures as land mounts were struggling to pass by the pedestrians. Several shouts came from the Auction house, where she knew an intense bidding war was and would always be going on. With her eyes elsewhere, she failed to notice the individual before her before she ran into him, nearly knocking him over.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” She said habitually, reaching to help the man up when she realized who he was. “Quill!”
The fire had long gone out, but that didn’t stop the embers from flickering. Their vain attempt to relight forced their glow to intensify, but only for a moment before they weakened again. Sitting on a couch in front of the fire was a night elf with light blue skin, looking crestfallen as a large black panther rested his head in her lap. One leg was folded under the other as she leaned against the corner of the couch, her dark hair unkempt and covering parts of her face. her body was covered in shadows, thanks to the fire being out and the sunlight only landing on her chin. Besides the occasional crackle of a determined ember, the house she was in was silent, the windows and doors all closed from the outside world. For the first time in what seemed like ages, she sighed, letting her eyes close. As her face fell, a stray strand of sunlight caught sight of her face, revealing stains down her cheeks that were being freshly renewed by a silent river of tears.
A sudden knock on the door almost snapped her out of her misery, but not quiet. She turned her head, looking at the door despairingly. The last time Emyth had shown up, they had only absorbed each other’s agonies to make everything worse. Clenching her eyes shut, she gently moved Gus’s head away from her lap, setting him down on the plush cushion she had just been sunk into. He was getting old, in his younger days even while asleep he would have alerted her of the visitors. She slowly got up, her feet barely making a sound on the dusty floor. She dragged herself to the door as the knock came again, the uncertain second knock when the first one goes apparently unnoticed. She took a deep breath as she softly grabbed the handle, pulling the door open. With the sun to his back, hair ruffled by the speed which he had run there, an impossibly large smile engrained on his face, Quill stood in the doorway. “I’m home.” He said quietly, not wanting to startle his wife too much.Kyli collapsed to the floor, falling to her knees as the tears once again came out. Quill fell with her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close to his chest. Her sobs were choked with her breathing, and for the longest time she felt as if she was dreaming. But his arms, his warmth, his smell… they were all real. He was real. He was back. She bit her lip as the tears dropped onto her lap. She wrapped her arms around him, considering never letting go again.Altius, Serenity and Billz stood watching from a distance, having decided earlier that they would need a moment alone before seeing anyone else. After seeing Kyli collapse as she did, they had been right. Serenity sighed and leaned against Billz, who felt slightly insecure thanks to her being taller than him. “Isn’t that romantic?” She swooned, hugging him once again.
“Yeah…” Billz replied, still a bit too stunned for words. How many years had it been?Altius smiled, watching his parents embrace. It was a common sight for him. He turned as saw Serenity and Billz close to doing the same thing, with Serenity stripping Billz of his mask. He was normally so very protective about that mask that it never came off. And now here he was, barely noticing as Serenity moved in to kiss him. Altius looked back to his parents, who he could tell were whispering to each other. After glancing between the two couples, he started walking toward the giant pond that made up the centerpiece of the area.Reaching its edge, he sat down and looked towards the city. It was still as busy as ever, despite it being nearly sunset. He looked down into the water, smiling faintly. The surface was rippling thanks to the waterfall constantly running into it. Even still, he could still slightly make out his own fragmented reflection and the tree behind him. Along with someone standing there.Altius turned, nearly surprised as Emyth was when she fell into his arms and kissed him. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
